Akhilesh Questions Malegaon Blast Verdict Timing

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday asked whether the news of aquittal of the Malegaon blast case accused was intended to suppress the big news of the US announcing imposition of 25 per cent tariffs on India.

Speaking to reporters in the national capital, Akhilesh Yadav said, “I did not read the report, but the accused who were involved in such a huge incident should be punished. Such a big thing happened in America, is this news to suppress that? Tariff is a big question.”

Akhilesh Yadav further noted India is facing a threat from China as well.

“Our neighbouring country will destroy our economy. India is facing a big threat from China as well. China is taking away our land and our business as well. The Government needs to be careful of China,” he said.

Mumbai’s NIA special court today acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts, with the court saying that the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Meanwhile, the US President Donald Trump, in a social media post on his Truth Social Account, announced 25 per cent tariffs on India starting August 1.

Trump also said India will face additional penalties for purchasing oil from Russia.

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”, Trump posted. (ANI)

U’khand On Alert For Rains; Chardham Yatra Opens: Vinod Kumar Suman

Uttarakhand Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Vinod Kumar Suman on Thursday stated that the state is experiencing no major losses due to heavy rainfall, with district officials on high alert and necessary precautions in place.

Addressing the impact of the rains, Suman said that while minor disruptions have occurred at a few locations, the Chardham Yatra route remains fully operational.

“There is no major loss anywhere at present, except in one or two places. Our Chardham Yatra route is fully open. The road between Sonprayag and Gaurikund in Munkutia is slightly obstructed due to debris, but we are able to clear it daily. When it rains, debris falls, and the road is closed temporarily. Once the rain stops, we clear the debris using machines and manpower deployed with full effort. Similarly, the road in Siro Bagad is closed briefly almost daily, but we are reopening it. Likewise, one road on the Gangotri Highway and one in Pithoragarh are closed, but all these roads will be opened today, with some already cleared. Action is underway to open the remaining closed roads,” he said.

According to Suman, around 35 Public Works Department (PWD) roads and some rural routes were temporarily closed, but most have been reopened, ensuring smooth traffic movement.

“Currently, about thirty-five PWD roads and some rural roads, which are main routes, are closed, but almost all are now open, and traffic is running smoothly. Rain continues, and when alerts are received from the IMD, we immediately forward them to the districts from the Meteorological Department, along with instructions on necessary precautions. As mentioned, our main roads–whether for the Chardham Yatra, district connections, or other important state roads–are almost all open, with closures limited to one or two places,” he said.

Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, is likely to affect Nainital, Haridwar, Dehradun, and several other major areas through at least August 1.

Meanwhile, on Monday, in view of the forecast of a low- to medium-level flood risk in various districts of Uttarakhand, the State Emergency Operations Centre in Dehradun has advised the District Magistrates (DMs) of all the concerned districts to take precautions. (ANI)

Shrikant Sslams Cong: ‘Used ‘Saffron Terror’ Narrative To Cover Failures’ After Malegaon Verdict

Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde has accused the Congress party of creating a narrative of “saffron terrorism” in an effort to hide their own failures in curbing terrorism. Shinde’s remarks came after an NIA court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

The Shiv Sena MP also criticised Congress leader P Chidambaram, who he said questioned the Pakistani origins of the Pahalgam attackers and had previously used the term “bhagwa aatank” alleging that the former Union Home Minister had called Indian people terrorists.

“P Chidambaram, who tried to create the narrative of ‘saffron terrorism,’ had also said some time ago that regarding the attackers behind the Pahalgam attack, what proof is there that they came from Pakistan?” Shinde told ANI at the Parliament premises.

“Was he (P Chidambaram) calling Indian people terrorists? Congress should ask him these questions…To hide their failure in eliminating terrorism, he tried to create a narrative like ‘saffron terrorism’…Today, the truth has come before the people.”

The term ‘Bhagwa Aatank’ (saffron terrorism) is believed to have been first coined after the 2002 Gujarat riots; however, it also gained prominence after the 2008 Malegaon blasts, with Congress leaders using the term during rallies. Regarding Chidambaram’s use of the term, the former Union Home Minister had used it during an official meeting with police chiefs to tell them to be aware of such a phenomenon. Congress leader Digvijay Singh has previously used the term to criticise the terror attacks.

Notably, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also told ANI, “The hearing went on for many years in the NIA court…The court had to acquit all the accused because there was no evidence against them…When a hearing takes place in court, evidence has to be provided. In the Malegaon blast case, there was no evidence against them, so the court had to acquit them…Terrorists are only terrorists; they have no religion.”

Mumbai’s Special NIA court today acquitted all seven accused of being involved in the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, with the court saying that the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The NIA court has also ordered the Maharashtra government to award Rs 2 lakh compensation to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 compensation to the injured.

On September 29 2008, six people were killed and 95 others injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon City’s Bhikku Chowk. Originally, 11 people were accused in the case; however, the court ultimately framed charges against 7. The lawyer representing the victims’ families said that he will be challenging the acquittal of the 7 people in High Court. (ANI)

World No 1 T20I Batter Abhishek Sharma Walks Ramp at India Couture Week 2025 Finale

Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma on Wednesday evening surprised fans by unveiling his fashionable side as the showstopper at the grand finale of India Couture Week 2025 in the national capital.

The Punjab-born cricketer walked the runway for ace designer JJ Valaya, turning heads with his traditional ethnic attire.

Decked up in an off-white knee-length kurta and churidar, Abhishek looked like a biba munda in the ethnic look. The kurta featured a floral embroidery pattern in pastel and earthy tones, elevating the overall ensemble.

He paired the kurta with a matching floral jacket with a bandhgala collar. Giving a more traditional effect to his showstopper look, he walked the runway wearing Punjabi jutti.

Abhishek’s presence as the show opener for JJ Valaya drew significant attention, coming just hours after he was officially announced as the new World No.1 batter in the ICC T20I rankings.

With this feat, he has become the third Indian men’s player to hold the No.1 spot in the ICC rankings for batters.

The 24-year-old left-hander has dethroned Australia’s Travis Head for the position.

Abhishek has played 17 T20Is, scoring two hundreds and two fifties with a strike rate of 193.84. His consistent performances against South Africa and England propelled him to the top spot, displacing Travis Head, who hadn’t played since September last year.

Other Indians in the top 10 include Tilak Varma at No. 3 and Suryakumar Yadav at No. 6, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is ranked 11th.

Abhishek only burst onto the international scene last year when he scored a superb T20I century against Zimbabwe, but more recent efforts against South Africa and England have seen the 24-year-old overtake Head at the top of the batter rankings and become the new No.1 in the shortest format. (ANI)

Ozzy Osbourne’s Family Says Final Goodbye To Iconic Singer In Emotional Funeral Procession

John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne, the lead singer of British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, passed away at 76. Heavy metal legend made an iconic reunion with his Black Sabbath bandmates and delivered a huge farewell concert weeks before he passed away on Tuesday, July 22.

On Wednesday, July 30, Ozzy’s loved ones attended Osbourne’s funeral procession in the city of Birmingham, England, while fans lined the streets of his beloved hometown to say goodbye. Osbourne’s cortege and family visited Broad Street, where the Black Sabbath bridge and bench have become a public memorial to the “Crazy Train” singer with flowers, photos and notes, according to People.

Accompanying the hearse and vehicles in the procession was a live brass band performance by Bostin’ Brass, musicians local to Birmingham. Ozzy’s coffin was laid with purple flowers spelling out his name, and fans threw flowers at the hearse as it passed and chanted “Ozzy, Ozzy.”

The procession then halted on the Black Sabbath bridge, and the family, including Ozzy’s grandchildren, stepped out to see the tributes for approximately five minutes.

Fans shouted, “We love you, Sharon,” as Ozzy’s tearful wife Sharon Osbourne was comforted by daughter Kelly Osbourne, who held her hand. Son Jack Osbourne, daughter Aimee Osbourne and Ozzy’s son Louis Osbourne were also by their side and appeared emotional as they viewed the tributes, as per the outlet.

The family, all dressed in black, held up peace signs to the cheering crowd before laying their own floral tributes, with Sharon being supported by Kelly, 40, and Jack, 39, reported People.

Ozzy was laid to rest in a private ceremony on July 30.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” Osbourne’s family said in a statement after his demise. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Weeks before his death, Ozzy performed at Black Sabbath’s final concert, marking the first time he and the band reunited in 20 years. Unable to walk due to Parkinson’s disease,

Sources close to the family revealed that the singer had the best exit with his final concert, reported Page Six. Stating that the “post-show high” remained through the remaining days of his life, the source added, “They couldn’t have asked for a better ending.”

Ozzy Osbourne, who struggled with Parkinson’s disease and many other chronic conditions for a long time, performed from a black leather chair during the show.

“It energised him — it filled him with life. He’d really been slowing down, and then after the show, he was really back to being himself. It’s a beautiful ending,” said a friend of OsbourneRecently, Johnny Depp joined rock icon Alice Cooper on stage at London’s O2 Arena to pay tribute to iconic singer Ozzy Osbourne.

Cooper surprised the crowd at London’s O2 Arena with a special appearance from Depp, 62, as the group performed Black Sabbath’s 1970 hit ‘Paranoid’.

Depp, who is Cooper’s Hollywood Vampires bandmate, walked on stage with a guitar in hand halfway through ‘Paranoid’.Cooper, wearing an Osbourne T-shirt, later lifted his fist in the air when the song ended, as shown in concert video footage posted on YouTube.

The performance was part of Cooper’s sold-out London show with Judas Priest, which coincided with the release of The Revenge of Alice Cooper, the band’s first new album in over 50 years. (ANI)

Stokes Out, Changes In Bowling, Gambhir Row: A Classic Series Decider In The Making At London

The final Test between England and India at The Oval will kickstart from Thursday, with Shubman Gill-led Team India aiming for a series draw, which will no doubt make the team walk out of the UK with their heads held really high.

Following a dramatic draw at Old Trafford, which witnessed centuries from skipper Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, Team India will have a psychological advantage over England, whose bowlers were bowled right into the ground as Jadeja-Sundar gleefully chased their well-deserved centuries after sealing a draw. Team India has a disappointing record at The Oval, winning two, losing six and drawing seven.

One of the key plot lines heading into the match is the absence of English skipper Ben Stokes, who is out due to a right shoulder muscle injury. Ollie Pope will be captaining England in place of Stokes, having won three and lost one during his brief stint wearing the armband in the absence of Stokes last year. The Three Lions will no doubt miss their miracle man, the man who would take the initiative first and would make things happen when expected the least.

Speaking ahead of the match in the pre-match presser, Stokes said about his injury, “I am obviously disappointed, I have got a decent tear in one of the muscles I can’t pronounce. We took as long as we could to make the decision around that. Obviously, there is a bit of emotion that goes into this stuff when you find out what you have done. I came down here this morning to give myself every chance to play just as a batter,” Stokes told the media as quoted from Sky Sports.

But even with an Ashes series away from home coming in November, Stokes is in no mood to slow down as he prepares for the Aussie challenge, highlighting how much the England badge and winning mean to him.

“When I am out on the field, I play to win. I give absolutely everything that I possibly can. If I feel like there’s a moment in the game where I need to put everything that I’m feeling aside, I’ll do that, because that is how much this team means to me, it is how much playing for England means to me, it is how much winning means to me,” he added.

With spinner Liam Dawson out, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse omitted, the team will have a solid spin option in all-rounder Jacob Bethell, batting at number six and potent pace options in a returning Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue.

“That is the benefit of having a very strong squad. We have some good cricketers to choose from when we find ourselves in a situation like this. So, let us put full concentration on the 11 we have out there this week. We are very confident we have the ability to win this game and the series,” said Stokes, expressing confidence in the playing eleven.

On Bethell, who garnered a lot of hype with his strokeplay and three half-centuries against New Zealand away from last year as a number three batter, Stokes said, “I think being the type of player that he is, where he plays all three formats, probably allows him to be a bit more versatile with where he bats in the order. He will slide in at six, and I am very confident in his ability. He is a quality player, I think we all know that. We were not going to change the batting order at all, so it is quite easy for him to slot in at six.”

On the other hand, India is awaiting an update on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the final Test, which would mark his fourth outing in the series.

During the Manchester Test, he produced his most expensive Test figures of 2/112 and had struggles with his fitness too. Speaking about Bumrah’s availability ahead of the game in a presser, Gill said, “We are going to take a decision tomorrow. The wicket looks pretty green, so we will see how it turns out. So far in the series, Bumrah has been the second-highest wicket-taker and India’s top bowler with 14 scalps at an average of over 26, with two five-wicket hauls to his name.”

Gill also said that the call on Arshdeep, who is already India’s top T20I wicket-taker, will be taken later in the evening.

“He is definitely being asked to get ready. As I mentioned, we’ll make a decision later this evening. I will go and have a look at the wicket. I have not had a chance to look at the wicket. See how the weather is going to be in the next five days and then make a decision,” he added.

Arshdeep has experience playing in England, considering his past exploits in the County Championship. After a 17-wicket campaign in the IPL 2023, he signed for Kent and scalped 13 wickets from five matches. In 21 first-class games, Arshdeep has taken 66 wickets at an average of 30.37, with best figures of 6/40 and two fifers in 37 innings.

Gill said that the series has been a “great learning curve” for him as a captain, and the scoreline is not a true reflection of how well India has played.

“I think every match that we have played, it was very difficult to decide which team was going to win after four days of cricket. If we are able to do that for every match, for four matches, coming outside of India with a relatively young team, I think it is going to be a big achievement for us if we are able to level the series,” he said.

Tensions remain high following an argument between Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and pitch curator Lee Fortis over practice facilities, with the curator allegedly preventing them from inspecting the pitch from closed quarters.

Speaking on the matter, Gill said, “I do not know what exactly happened yesterday and why the pitch curator did what he did. We have played four matches, and no one has tried to stop us. Everyone has played so much cricket, and the coaches and the captain have gone and seen the wicket so many times. I don’t know what the fuss was all about.”

He further explained that it’s common for captains and coaches to inspect the pitch from close quarters, a normal part of preparation, as long as the person is either barefoot or wearing rubber spikes.

“If a pitch curator is going to come and ask us to not look at the wicket and look at the wicket from three metres from behind, that is not something that has happened to us before. We have been playing cricket for such a long time, and as long as you are under rubber spikes or you are barefoot, you are allowed to look at the wicket from close quarters, and that is the job of the coach and the captain. So I do not know why the curator did not let us or did not allow us to do that. It is not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket,” he added.

Will this controversy and resultant tension get reflected in the team’s play and give Team India the victory they have been looking for? Only time will tell.

US To Develop ‘Massive’ Oil Reserves In Pakistan, They Might Sell To India : Trump

Hours after announcing 25 per cent tariffs with additional penalties on India, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time) announced a trade deal with Pakistan, touting a joint initiative to develop oil reserves in India’s terror-harbouring neighbour and even floated the idea that “some day” Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the United States and Pakistan are currently in the process of selecting the oil company for the partnership.

“We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling Oil to India some day!” Trump stated.

The remarks came after Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff and additional penalty on Indian imports starting August 1, citing Washington’s trade deficit with New Delhi and its purchase of Russian oil.

Trump, in his post, further stated that he had conversations on trade deals with leaders of many countries, noting “all of whom want to make the United States extremely happy.”

“We are very busy in the White House today working on Trade Deals. I have spoken to the Leaders of many Countries, all of whom want to make the United States “extremely happy.” I will be meeting with the South Korean Trade Delegation this afternoon. South Korea is right now at a 25% Tariff, but they have an offer to buy down those Tariffs. I will be interested in hearing what that offer is,” the post read.

He also noted that many countries are currently making offers to the US for “Tariff reduction.”

“Likewise, other Countries are making offers for a Tariff reduction. All of this will help reduce our Trade Deficit in a very major way. A full report will be released at the appropriate time. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” it further read. (ANI)

US Sanctions Hit Indian Companies Over Iran Oil Trade

The United States has imposed sanctions on at least half a dozen Indian companies accused of trading in Iranian petroleum and petrochemicals as part of broader action targeting 20 entities worldwide.

The US Department of State announced the sanctions on Wednesday, alleging the Indian firms knowingly engaged in “significant transactions” for the purchase and marketing of Iranian petroleum products, violating American sanctions on Iran.

The sanctioned Indian companies include some of the country’s major petrochemical traders. Alchemical Solutions Private Limited faces the largest allegations, accused of importing Iranian petrochemical products worth over USD 84 million between January and December 2024.

Global Industrial Chemicals Limited is alleged to have purchased Iranian petrochemicals, including methanol, valued at over USD 51 million between July 2024 and January 2025. Jupiter Dye Chem Private Limited reportedly imported Iranian products, including toluene worth over USD 49 million, during the same period. Ramniklal S Gosalia and Company is accused of purchasing Iranian petrochemicals worth over USD 22 million, including methanol and toluene.

Persistent Petrochem Private Limited allegedly imported approximately USD 14 million worth of Iranian petrochemicals, particularly methanol, between October and December 2024. Kanchan Polymers is said to have purchased over USD 1.3 million worth of Iranian polyethene products.

Under the sanctions, all assets of these companies in the United States or controlled by US persons are now frozen. American individuals and companies are prohibited from conducting business with the sanctioned entities. The action also blocks any entity that is 50 per cent or more owned by the sanctioned companies.

The sanctions come as the US continues its “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, targeting what it calls the country’s “shadow fleet” of vessels and intermediary companies that help transport Iranian oil and petrochemicals globally. US officials say Iran uses revenue from oil and petrochemical exports to fund what Washington describes as “destabilising activities” in the Middle East and support for terrorist groups.

India has historically maintained trade relationships with Iran, though it has reduced Iranian oil imports significantly since 2019 following previous US sanctions.

The sanctioned companies can petition for removal from the US Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals list. The US government says the “ultimate goal of sanctions is not to punish, but to bring about a positive change in behaviour.”

Companies wishing to contest their designation can submit petitions to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, according to a fact sheet shared by the US Department of State.

The sanctions also targeted companies in Turkey, the UAE, China, and Indonesia as part of what US officials describe as a global network facilitating Iranian oil and petrochemical trade. (ANI)

Trump Cannot Decide Where India Buys Oil: Congress

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday that Donald Trump imposing a 25 per cent tariff on India is a major setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the country and that the US President cannot decide from where New Delhi will buy oil.

In an interview with ANI, he termed Trump’s 25 per cent tariff move on India “a huge setback for our country, our economy and the PM” and said “this is blackmail by the US”.

He also said that PM Modi should not be afraid of Trump’s move.

” This is a huge setback to PM Modi and India…Taareef hi tareef mein tariff lag gaya…There were no gains from Howdy Modi and Namaste Trump..President Trump has stated 30 times that he halted Operation Sindoor…So what did we get from this (India-US) friendship? The country is still questioning why Operation Sindoor was suddenly stopped,” Jairam Ramesh told ANI.

“This is a huge setback for our country, our economy and the PM. The PM should not be scared. This is blackmail by the US…It is a time of trouble for us. This will impact our engineering, pharmaceuticals, and business industries. This is a huge challenge before us. We used to think there were two big challenges before us – Pakistan and China, but the US has emerged as the third big trouble,” he added.

US President Donald Trump today in a social media post on his Truth Social Account announced 25 per cent tariffs on India starting August 1.

Jairam Ramesh, who is a Congress general secretary, said Trump cannot decide what choices India makes for its energy supplies.

“US President Trump cannot decide where we will buy oil and other things from….The PM has suffered a political setback, and our economy has suffered a setback today…We will keep questioning the government….The PM did not come to Rajya Sabha today,” he said.

Trump’s announcement came two days ahead of the impending US tariff deadline of August 1 amid hopes of an interim India-US trade that would have otherwise helped avoid elevated tariffs.

Over the past few months, India and the US have been negotiating for an interim trade deal, but there were some reservations from the Indian side on the US demand for opening up the agricultural and dairy sectors for the US. Agriculture and dairy are critical for India as these two sectors provide livelihood opportunities to a large section of its people.

India reportedly faces US demands, including allowing remanufactured goods, opening up agriculture and dairy, accepting genetically modified (GM) feed, and adopting US rules on digital trade and product standards.

India on Wednesday said that it has taken note of a statement by the US President on bilateral trade and is studying its implications.

A statement by the Commerce and Industry Ministry said that India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months.

“We remain committed to that objective,” the statement said.

It said the Government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs.

“The Government will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements including the latest Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK,” the statement said. (ANI)
