Delhi Court Reserves Order On Police Custody Of Hashim Baba, Wife Zoya In MCOCA Case

Delhi’s Patiala House court on Friday reserved its order on the police custody of Anwar Khan alias Chacha, Hasim Baba alias Asim, Sameer alias Baba, and Zoya Khan in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) case.

Delhi police sought a 10-day remand of these accused persons.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Chander Jit Singh reserved order after hearing submissions by Delhi Police and counsel for accused persons.

The court has listed the matter for order on the custody of the accused on July 21 in view of the submissions that an SLP is listed in the Supreme Court against the re-arrest of the accused.

Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Akhand Pratap Singh for the special cell submitted that these accused have been arrested in a MCOCA case linked with the murder of a businessman, Sunil Jain, in the Farsh Bazar area.

The murder is the outcome of the organised crime syndicate. During the investigation, the names of these four accused individuals surfaced, as submitted by the SPP.

It was also submitted that the Remand was required to unearth the modus operandi of the syndicate. Some of the members of the syndicate had already fled the country.

On the other hand, advocate Tarun Rana appeared on behalf of the accused, Zoya.

He submitted that a Special Leave Petition (SLP) has been filed before the SC against the order of the High Court.

It was further submitted that the SLP number has been generated. The matter is likely to be listed before the SC on Monday.

The counsel submitted that they will make their submissions on July 21 at 2 pm, subject to the order of the Supreme Court.

On July 16, the Delhi High Court had dismissed the petition of the accused persons challenging their re-arrest in the present case.

The High Court ruled that a person cannot claim immunity from re-arrest merely because their initial arrest was vitiated on procedural grounds.

“The re-arrest, if carried out after curing such defects and in accordance with law, is not impermissible,” Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.

“In criminal law, procedural safeguards are essential to protect liberty, but they cannot be turned into a shield to defeat lawful investigation into heinous crimes,” the Court held, underlining that “a lapse by the police in the first arrest does not create a bar against subsequent arrest once the legal requirements are fulfilled.”

The petition was filed by Anwar Khan alias Chacha, Hasim Baba alias Asim, Sameer alias Baba, and Zoya Khan through a team of advocates including Anurag Jain, MM Khan, Amit Chadha, Atin Chadha, Munisha Chadha, and Sulaiman Mohd. Khan, and others.

They sought a declaration that their re-arrest on June 10, 2025, in FIR of 2024 related to the murder of one Sunil Jain was unlawful and unconstitutional.

The petitioners contended that their earlier arrest, declared “non-est” on May 13, 2025, by the Special Judge due to failure to supply written grounds of arrest, barred their re-arrest without fresh material. They alleged that the police had circumvented earlier court orders by re-arresting them without a sufficient basis, thereby violating their rights under Articles 21 and 22 of the Constitution.

However, Additional Standing Counsel Sanjeev Bhandari, along with Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Akhand Pratap Singh and others, appearing for the State, argued that the earlier release was due to a technical lapse and not for lack of incriminating material.

The State submitted that fresh grounds of arrest were provided during the re-arrest and procedural safeguards were fully complied with.

The bench of Justice Swarna Kamta Sharma, agreeing with the State’s position, noted that “the petitioners cannot be allowed to derive advantage from procedural lapses committed earlier by investigating officers. The liberty of an individual is protected, but not to the extent of frustrating the course of justice in serious criminal cases like those under MCOCA.”

The Court relied on judgments including Kavita Manikikar v. CBI, Vicky Bharat Kalyani v. State of Maharashtra, and Rakesh Kumar Paul v. State of Assam to affirm that re-arrest is legally tenable if done by following due process.

The Court also observed that in the present case, sufficient material existed against the petitioners, who have extensive criminal histories, and their alleged role in a larger crime syndicate was backed by specific evidence.

The High Court upheld the judicial remand orders dated June 11 and June 16, as well as the Special Judge’s July 4 order affirming the legality of the re-arrest.

The Court concluded: “The petitioners’ initial arrest was declared invalid only on technical grounds. Once procedural irregularities were cured and grounds of arrest were meaningfully furnished, their re-arrest cannot be held illegal.” (ANI)

Raj, Uddhav Not ‘laat sahabs’: Nishikant Defends Hindi Speakers Remark

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey on Friday lambasted incidents of violence against Hindi speakers in Maharashtra after the Mahayuti government’s move on three-language policy which was later withdrawn.

In an interview with ANI, Nishikant Dubey said India is diverse and all its people have a strong affection for their region.

The four-time MP also said people have a right to move from one part of the country to the other.

“I am saying this again, I stand by my statements. This nation is diverse, and all its people have a strong affection for their region…If Maharashtra is a part of this country, then anyone can be settled anywhere in this country…But they beat up those who are Hindi language speakers…Even today, only 31-32% Marathi speakers live in Mumbai…I accept that Maharashtra has a huge contribution to the economy, I have huge respect for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” he said.

He was asked about his controversial “patak, patak ke maarenge” remarks.

“I am proud that my mother tongue is Hindi. Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are not big laat sahabs . I am an MP, do not take law in my hands. Whenever they go out, whichever state they go, the people of that place will beat them…” he said.

“If you beat up the poor, they will react one day. It is not only Hindi speakers. They protested against Gujaratis in 1956, then against South Indians, and now they are doing it against Hindi speakers. Their history is such that everyone is angry at them….Unka security vapis leljiye, agar ghar se bahar nikal jaye to main samajh jaun bahut bade sher hai (Take away their security, they will not leave their residence),” he added.

Taking a dig, those resorting to violence can stand outside the headquarters of prominent institutions, such as the State Bank of India (SBI) and LIC, and ask them to leave Maharashtra, as their top officials don’t converse in Marathi.

The BJP MP said that just as people from the South are proud of their languages, people from the northern and eastern regions are also proud of their mother tongue, which is Hindi.

“This is a country of languages. There is unity in diversity. All are fond of their regions. Nobody can question the rich history and existence of the Marathi language. I respect Marathi and Marathas…Anyone can settle anywhere in this country. Be it Rajasthani, Kannada, Telugu or Tamil – just like they love their language, we love Hindi. You don’t have a problem with teaching English, which is the language of the British,” Dubey said.

“Bombay was part of Gujarat. It was not part of Maharashtra until 1956, when the division occurred based on language. However, only 31 to 32 per cent of Marathi speakers live in Mumbai. An equal percentage of people who speak Hindi live there. Two per cent of people speak Bhojpuri in Mumbai. Twelve per cent are Gujarati speakers,” he added.

The Maharashtra Government had revoked the government resolutions (GRs) on the three-language policy, introducing Hindi as the third language in primary schools. The government has decided to set up a committee to take a relook into the three-language policy.

Fadnavis announced that the government resolutions (GRs) issued in April regarding the three-language policy in primary schools have been cancelled. The first GR had made Hindi a compulsory third language for students from Classes 1 to 5 and the second GR made it optional.

Uddhav and Raj Thackeray had held a joint ‘victory rally’ to celebrate the state government withdrawing its move.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut later clarified that their party is not against the Hindi language, but opposes making it mandatory in primary schooling.

“The Southern states have been fighting for this issue for years. Their stand against the imposition of Hindi means they will not speak Hindi and neither let anyone speak Hindi. But that is not our stand in Maharashtra. We speak Hindi… Our stand is that the strictness for Hindi in primary schools will not be tolerated. Our fight is limited to this,” he said.

Fadnavis had also clarified on Nishikant Dubey’s “patak, patak ke marenge” had sparked a row in Maharashtra.

He said that the remarks were not aimed at the Marathi community but at certain organisations that, according to Dubey, triggered the controversy.

“Whatever Nishikant Dubey has said, he has not said it for the common Marathi people, but for those organisations which have fuelled this controversy,” said Fadnavis.

However, the Chief Minister also distanced himself from the content of Dubey’s remarks. “I believe that Nishikant Dubey’s statement was not completely correct.”

“No one can deny or forget the contribution of Maharashtra in the progress of the country, and if someone does so, it would be completely wrong,” he added.

Dubey, who is MP from Godda, had made the remarks over some purported comments of MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

“What are you doing, whose bread are you eating? You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? We have all the mines in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. What mines do you have? All semiconductor refineries are in Gujarat. If you have the courage to beat Hindi speakers, then beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu too. If you’re such a ‘boss’, come out of Maharashtra–come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. ‘Tumko patak patak ke maarenge’…,” Dubey had said.

“We all respect Marathi and the people of Maharashtra, who fought for India’s independence. We respect all the freedom fighters — Chhatrapati Shivaji, Tatya Tope, Lala Lajpat Rai, Gopal Krishna Gokhale — Maharashtra has contributed a lot to our freedom and independence,” he added.

Sanjay Raut, in his Saamana article on July 13, stated that the Thackeray brothers, who joined hands on the Marathi issue, must also come together politically to fight the “commercial Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”.

He asserted that the alliance between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray was “necessary” for Maharashtra to get a new direction.”

“The current rulers of Delhi and Maharashtra are shaken by the way the storm of Marathi unity has been created in Maharashtra. They will try to prevent this alliance from happening,” the article read. (ANI)

I Never Think Too Far Ahead: Mandhana On ICC Women World Cup

With over 9,000 international runs, 1,000-plus boundaries, and a reputation built on grace under pressure, Indian opener Smriti Mandhana is entering a crucial phase of her career. But as the excitement around the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup builds, she remains refreshingly grounded.

In the ICC Women’s WC, hosts India will take on Sri Lanka in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 opener on September 30, in Bengaluru.

In an exclusive conversation with cricket scholar Sunil Yash Kalra on the Cricket Predicta Show, Smriti Mandhana said, “I have always been a big believer in not thinking too far ahead. We have to focus on the process, do every day right–and that is the aim.”

“Even as a team, everyone’s calm. We have got a long road ahead over the next five to six months. I would not like to speak a lot about it. Cricket is such a game–you do your things right, things fall in place. Let us just try and do that well,” she said.

While she keeps her eyes on the pitch, Mandhana is also nurturing the future of the game. She recently launched the City Cricket Academy by Smriti Mandhana in Dubai, a project powered by her deep-rooted relationship with UK-based coach Don Bhagawati, who will lead the coaching responsibilities.

“This is a great partnership for me,” Mandhana said. “Right now, I am focusing more on my cricket, and Don will handle the coaching. I’ve known Don for many years, and when I first heard his name, I was scared. I wondered, who is this ‘Don’? But over time, Don and his family have become like family to me in England.”

Don Bhagawati, a respected figure in grassroots cricket in the UK, shares Smriti’s passion for simplicity, discipline, and long-term development. Their vision for the academy is clear: create a space where young cricketers can develop their skills with joy, purpose, and the right values.

With her feet firmly on the ground, Mandhana’s dual commitment–toward excellence on the field and empowerment off it–is a quiet but powerful statement of leadership ahead of one of the biggest tournaments of her career.

Smriti Mandhana has been a consistent performer for India across all formats. ED Arrests Ex-CM Bhupesh Baghel’s Son Chaitanya In Liqour Scam Case

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday arrested former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s son Chaitanya Baghel in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged multi-crore liquor scam in the state, officials confirmed.

The action comes a few hours after the agency carried out raids at Chaitanya’s residence in Chhattisgarh. The searches were part of the agency’s broader crackdown on suspected money laundering and irregularities linked to the multi-crore scam.

Following the raids, Bhupesh Baghel’s office posted on X,”ED has arrived. Today is the last day of the Assembly session. The issue of trees being cut in Tamnar for Adani was supposed to be raised today. “Saheb” has sent the ED to the Bhilai residence.”

The move comes months after the agency in March this year seized Rs 30 lakh recovered from the residence of Bhupesh Bhupesh Baghel and his son Chaitanya.

The amount was recovered during day-long search operation conducted at a total of 14 locations across Chhattisgarh in the case pertains to alleged irregularities in the liquor trade in Chhattisgarh, involving suspected illegal commissions and money laundering.

ED has gathered that Chaitanya Baghel is also “recipient of proceeds of crime generated from the liquor scam wherein total proceeds of crime is around Rs 2,161 crore siphoned off through various schemes.”

Reacting to the then raid Bhupesh Baghel’s office posted on ‘X’, saying, “When the false case going on for seven years was dismissed in the court, today the guests of ED have entered the Bhilai residence of former Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary Bhupesh Baghel this morning. If someone is trying to stop Congress in Punjab through this conspiracy, then it is a misunderstanding.”

The ED has alleged that a cartel of government officials, politicians, and liquor businessmen ran a scheme that illegally collected around Rs 2,161 crore from the sale of liquor in the state between 2019 and 2022. The alleged scam involved manipulation of the liquor supply chain, where a cartel controlled the sale and distribution of alcohol through government-run shops.

A portion of liquor sold was not accounted for in official records, and bribes were allegedly collected from suppliers to allow its sale outside the legal system.

The investigation is based on an earlier Income Tax Department report, which flagged irregularities in the liquor trade.

Earlier, the ED had arrested several key accused, including IAS officer Anil Tuteja and liquor businessman Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur’s mayor.

The agency has earlier conducted multiple raids, including on politicians and bureaucrats linked to the previous Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh. (ANI)

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Tickets Sold an Year Ahead of Release

The tickets for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’ went on sale in Imax 70mm film at 25 or 26 locations over the July 12-19 weekend, ahead of the movie’s release in 2026, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

According to the outlet, 95 percent of seats were sold, according to exhibition sources, representing approximately 1.5 million USD in sales, despite a relatively small pool of seats.

The ticket sales also included the Thursday screenings of July 16, 2026. The film is a take on the classic Greek myth–starring Matt Damon as the eternal hero Odysseus–is being shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, a first for a commercial feature.

Taking to their X handle, IMAX announced the special ticket sales of Odyssey, exactly a year before the film’s release.

As the night and day unfolded, there were reports of tickets being resold on eBay and other sites for anywhere between 300 and 400 USD, compared to an average retail price of 25-28 USD, said one source, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

This marks the first time in history that tickets have gone on sale a year before a film’s opening.

The hype for the film is above the roofs as this marks the next project for Nolan after the massive success of ‘Oppenheimer’, which did huge business in IMAX theatres.

There are roughly 16 IMAX sites in the U.S. that are part of the offering as of now. The July 17-19 weekend and preview showings are already entirely sold out at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, the Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood, and the Regal Irvine Spectrum in Orange County, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Elsewhere in California, 77mm seats are almost sold out at IMAX locations in San Francisco, Dublin, and Ontario.

According to the outlet, other sell-out IMAX cinemas are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Buford, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indiana; Grand Rapids, Michigan; King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; and Dallas, Texas.

High-profile locations in Canada, where IMAX is headquartered, quickly sold out, including the Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga Square and the Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan, both in Toronto, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Across the Atlantic, London’s famous BFI Imax is sold out, as is London’s Science Museum Imax auditorium.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the IMAX screens ponied up more than 190 million USD of Oppenheimer’s total global gross of 975.8 million USD.

‘The Odyssey’ has a net budget of 250 million USD, which will make it the most expensive film of Nolan’s career.

In addition to Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth.

The classic story follows the king of Ithaca as he undertakes a long and perilous journey home to his wife Penelope following the Trojan War.

His challenges are many as he spends years encountering a succession of mythical beings, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and travels to the Underworld, reported the outlet. (ANI)

BJP Couldn’t Have Won 150 Seats Witout Modi As Leader: Nishikant

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey emphasised the crucial role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the party’s electoral success, stating that the several sections which did not vote for BJP earlier now support the party and it has broken new ground in many states.

Dubey, who is one of the most articulate faces of BJP in Parliament, told ANI in an interview that the BJP requires PM Modi for its success and PM Modi’s leadership is essential for the party’s victory.

Dubey highlighted that the BJP’s success is heavily dependent on PM Modi’s leadership.

“Today, Modiji has become the Prime Minister for the third time…if Modiji is not our leader, the BJP may not win even 150 seats (in LS polls),” Nishikant Dubey said.

PM Modi has been in Prime Minister since 2014 and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance recorded its third successive victory in last year’s Lok Sabha polls. The BJP got absolute majority on its own in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“When Modiji came, the vote bank that never belonged to the BJP, especially among the poor, shifted towards the party due to their faith in him. Some may like it or not, but it’s a reality,” Dubey said.

Dubey, who is parliamentarian from Godda and is four-time MP, attributed party’s success to the faith that people have in PM Modi.

“2029 ka chunav bhi BJP ki mazboori hai ki Modiji ke natritav mein ladna padega…(it is BJP’s compulsion to fight the 2029 (Lok Sabha polls) under leadership of PM Modi). The BJP needs Modiji…As a party worker, I believe that we need Modiji’s leadership, ” Dubey added.

“My remarks were not meant to be controversial, but rather a reflection of the reality on the ground. The fact that Modi’s name alone can secure votes for the party is a testament to his leadership and the faith that people have in him. As long as his body permits, we will need his leadership to achieve our goal of a developed India by 2047,” he added.

Answering a query on RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks about stepping down at the age of 75, Dubey said there is no need for Modiji to do so.

“BJP needs him. One may agree or not, political party runs on cult…,” he said.

Answering another query, Dubey said that for the next 15-20 years, PM Modi would be the leader. “15-20 saal tak Modiji nazar aa rahen hain (he is visible (as a leader) for the next 15-20 years).”

“It’s natural for people to wonder about the future. However, when you’re working at the grassroots level, you understand the reality. I contested elections in 2009 and won, but my victory margin was slim – just 6,000 votes. In fact, I lost in almost all six assembly segments, which is a testament to the challenges of winning,” Dubey noted.

The BJP secured an absolute majority on its own for the first time in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls with Narendra Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

It won 282 seats in 2014, and improved its tally to 303 seats in the 2019 general elections. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) crossed the 350-mark, recording one of the highest victories in Lok Sabha polls.

Under PM Modi’s leadership, BJP has attained repeated success in assembly polls.

Tripura, Assam, Haryana and Odisha are among states BJP formed government for the first time. It has also spread its influence in northeastern states and expanded its base in southern states. (ANI)

Emphasising that the Indian government has increased the budget for sports in the last 10 years, the Union Minister said that the government is also preparing for the 2036 Olympic Games.
