ECI Reports 89.7% Elector Participation In Bihar’s SIR

The Election Commission reported on Thursday that 89.7 per cent of the existing electors have submitted their enumeration forms during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The draft electoral roll for Bihar will be published on August 1, 2025.

“As of today, 89.7% of the existing electors have given their Enumeration Form to be included in the draft Electoral-Roll to be published on 1st August, 2025,” the ECI said in an official statement.

“In order to re-verify the electors who have not been found at their addresses even after 3 visits of BLOs, the information on electors who are probably deceased, permanently shifted or have enrolled at multiple places is being shared with District Presidents of political parties/1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents appointed by them so that exact status of such electors can be confirmed by them before 25.07.2025,” the release stated.

The poll body noted that special camps are also being set up in all the 5,683 wards of all 261 urban local Bodies (ULBs) of Bihar.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav severely lambasted the ECI on Thursday over the exercise.

“The Election Commission of India is working under the direction of the BJP office. We sensitised people about their rights; we went to the Supreme Court; even the Supreme Court gave its directions, but Gyanesh Kumar (Chief Election Commissioner) did not do a single press conference and answer anything,” he told reporters here.

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday cited media reports and alleged that “massive irregularities” are coming to light in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in poll-bound Bihar and questioned the independence of the Election Commission.

She also noted the silence of the poll body in the face of what she called an “atmosphere of chaos” among the people in the light of the exercise.

In a post on X, the Congress MP said, “In Bihar, in the name of Special Intensive Revision, whatever is happening, seeing it, the public is asking whether ‘votebandi’ is being implemented in Bihar?”

“According to reports published in the media, massive irregularities and fraud are coming to light in the entire process. There is an atmosphere of chaos among the public, and the Election Commission is silent on all questions. In such a situation, it is inevitable to question who the Election Commission is working for and what its purpose is.” (ANI)

Picking On Mamdani For All The Wrong Reasons

Zohran Mamdani’s surprise victory in the Democratic mayoral primary for the New York City, has indeed stunned the city’s elite. Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and emerged as the frontrunner in a race that all but guarantees his path to the City Hall as a Democratic nominee. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and Queens assemblyman, won a record-setting primary victory, and unions, grassroots Democratic groups, and savvy elected officials are rushing to back him.

However, what puzzles one is the unexpected campaign launched by the city’s elite, including the wealthiest and most influential citizens of the city, who are up in arms against Mamdani. This also reflects the real face of the American society and the people who control it.

Apparently, Mamdani ran his primary campaign based on his ideas and suggestions to improve the city. But in fact, most of these proposals have been raised in the past too but have not been implemented.

In fact, nearly all his cost-of-living proposals have been enacted or attempted in some form or the other in New York or elsewhere in the US. Former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio tried freezing the rent on the city’s stabilised units three times, in 2015, 2016, and 2020. Raising the minimum wage for workers? Following a decade of increases approved in Albany, the city’s minimum wage hit $16.50, this year. Mamdani’s call for free public buses sounds similar to the MTA’s Fair Fares programme, which currently lets low-income New Yorkers ride for half-price. And an estimated 3 million hungry New Yorkers get 1.6 million government-supplied meals every day through federal SNAP benefits, so opening five government-owned grocery stores (one in each borough) is more like a tiny welfare project.

Mamdani’s threat to tax wealthy New Yorkers also sounds familiar, bills promising to do exactly that have repeatedly been introduced in Albany for at least a decade; but all died at the committee stage. It is also worth noting that in 2021, the then-candidate for mayor, Adams called for a special tax on ultrawealthy New Yorkers. “If you make more than $5 million a year, we are asking you to pay a little more to stabilise our city,” he said at the time, a suggestion he promptly dropped after taking office.

Meanwhile, business leaders are warning that Mamdani’s platform—including proposals for city-run grocery stores and a freeze on rents in regulated units—poses a threat to New York’s economic future. Some of New York City’s wealthiest business leaders and political power players in emergency mode, are pouring money into independent groups determined to block his victory in the general election, the Wall Street Journal reported.

At least one new group—New Yorkers for a Better Future Mayor 25—has been formed with a war chest of $20 million, according to sources familiar with the effort. It’s just one of several anti-Mamdani efforts being planned by figures including Pershing Square CEO Bill Ackman and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Another effort, led by Giuliani and former NYPD detective Bo Dietl, is aiming to raise $10 million. But while these financiers are aligned in opposition to Mamdani, they have yet to unite behind a single rival candidate.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon labelled Mamdani’s politics “more Marxist than socialist” and dismissed his agenda as “ideological mush.” Yet as donors mobilise to fight him, political strategists worry that the barrage of outside money could backfire, feeding into Mamdani’s anti-establishment narrative and turning voters off from billionaire-backed campaigns.

However, most important is to understand how did Mamdani secure such a historic victory? In fact, he did exactly what national Democrats, stunned by the party’s defeats in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections, keep saying they know they must do, but have never done that. “Zohran Mamdani talked about issues of relevance to working-class people. The city responded to him, and he won the [primary],” explained Senator Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont and two-time presidential candidate.

Mamdani is a democratic socialist – like Sanders and US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Yes, he has taken bold, progressive stands on economic issues while advocating for international and domestic human rights. But, as the primary results illustrate, he is also a very popular Democratic nominee for one of the highest-profile elected positions in the United States.

Despite that fact, Democratic congressional leaders who come from New York City, such as Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to endorse Mamdani. Nor have other prominent New York Democrats, such as Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand—though the latter did make Islamophobic remarks about Mamdani that she later apologised for. And some Democrats who represent suburban communities, such as US Representative Laura Gillen, have been outspoken in their criticism of a party nominee whom they disagree with on issues ranging from tax policy and US support for the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The reluctance of prominent Democrats to formally endorse the party’s nominee has led to complaints from progressives. “It’s time for every Democratic leader to get on board,” says New York Working Families Party codirector Jasmine Gripper.

The obvious frustration expressed by the city’s elite and wealthiest citizens on Mamdani’s victory, reflects the fact that whatever the leaders and builders of the American society may proclaim, the reality is completely opposite to that.

Mamdani’s campaign promises have been termed as Soviet style taking over of America, even the lack of support by Democrat’s Socialist wing exemplifies the fact that none is willing to break the status quo and contribute to the less fortunate sections of the society. Moreover, his India-roots and stand on Gaza have been instrumental in the Islamophobic and Israel-hater slurs against Mamdani.

This shows that all said and done the American society is still not able to accept someone on merit and his promise of reforms and welfare of the poor. Most just want to line their own pockets and speak rhetorically about labelling him as antisemitic. Democracy in its true form has yet to take roots in America.

India Is In Touch With Some Friendly Govts Over Nimisha Priya Case: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs made comprehensive remarks on the Nimisha Priya case during the weekly press briefing here on Thursday.

The 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was set to be executed on July 16 after a trial court in Yemen convicted her of killing a Yemeni national, a decision that the country’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld in November 2023.

Speaking to reporters on the case, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the various steps which the Government of India has taken to provide support to the family. This includes legal assistance, regular consular visits by family and also the Indian government being in touch with governments on this case.

Jaiswal said, “On the Nimisha Priya case, this is a very sensitive matter and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case. We have provided legal assistance and also appointed a lawyer to assist the family. We have also arranged for regular consular visits by her family and we are also in touch with the local authorities, as also the family members to resolve this issue. This included concerted efforts in the recent few days to seek more time for the family of Ms Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. The local authorities in Yemen have postponed the carrying out her sentence that was scheduled for July 16. We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance in the case. We are also in touch with some friendly governments in this regard.”

When asked about the role of the Grand Mufti in urging for the postponement of Nimisha Priya’s sentence, the MEA Spokesperson said, “As for the role of the entity that you have mentioned, I have no information to share on this account.”

The remarks by MEA come after the Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad Kanthapuram said on Tuesday that he spoke to scholars in Yemen to urge them for the release of 37-year-old Nimish Priya, convicted of murder and set to be executed. The Grand Mufti claims that after his talks, the news of the execution being postponed also came in.

“In Islam, instead of killing, there is also a practice of giving Diya (compensation). I requested them to accept Diyaat as the party is ready here for it. There are talks going on about whether my request has to be accepted. The date of execution was tomorrow, but it has now been postponed for some days,” the Grand Mufti told ANI.

The Grand Mufti had said that he is not considering the religion of Priya, but rather her humanity as he requested for her release.

The Mufti’s remarks had come after sources told ANI earlier that the execution of the 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was postponed following the “concerted efforts” by the Government of India. The execution was earlier set to happen on July 16.

According to the sources, the postponement provides additional time for her family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts by Indian officials as they maintained regular communication with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor’s office while navigating the sensitivities of the situation to secure this reprieve.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday expressed relief and optimism over the postponement of the execution of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse sentenced to death in Yemen.

He described the development as “comforting and hopeful,” noting that it provides additional time to secure the termination of her sentence.

Vijayan acknowledged the persistent efforts and intervention of Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Musliyar and others, including the Action Council, who have been working tirelessly to seek justice for Nimisha Priya. (ANI)

Corner Defender Is Team’s Pillar: Yogesh Dahiya On Record Bulls Move

The one overarching ambition for Kabbadi player Yogesh Dahiya, who was lapped up for a record Rs 1.125 crore by Bengaluru Bulls in the recent Pro Kabbadi League Season 12 auction, is to help his team lift this year’s title, and justify his reputation as the “silent killer.”

A total of three Pro Kabaddi League franchises, Bengaluru Bulls, Patna Pirates, and Bengal Warriorz bid to ensure the player from Padladpur gets into their team. In the end, the player ends up landing in the Bengaluru Bulls franchise.

“I was watching the player auction live on TV. I could see Bengaluru Bulls bidding, then Patna Pirates, then Bengal Warriorz. I was watching all this unfold,” recalls the 23-year-old defender as quoted by the PKL press release.

He emerged as the most expensive Indian defender bought during a PKL Player Auction, after he was signed by Bengaluru Bulls for a staggering Rs. 1.125 crores.

“There was a little nervousness – what will happen? Who will take me? Which franchise will I join? But overall, it was very interesting and fun,” he reflected.

When the hammer finally fell in the Bulls’ favour, the celebration wasn’t just confined to the franchise’s war room. Back in his village, his family erupted in joy after it was confirmed that he is now the most expensive Indian defender in the history of the PKL Player Auction.

“My family was very happy. Mom and Dad were so happy that their child had become so valuable. They felt proud that I had achieved this recognition,” Dahiya shared.

This wasn’t always the story. The path from village fields to professional stardom began almost by accident in 2018.

“The seniors used to play in the village. Looking at them, I developed an interest in playing kabaddi. It helped me avoid school work, and I also enjoyed it,” he admitted with characteristic honesty.

“In the beginning, there wasn’t much support. But after I started performing better, the family became interested. They started supporting me. On days when I didn’t feel like going to practice, they would say, ‘get up, go to practice. What will you do at home?” he added.

The transformation from scepticism to unwavering support mirrors Dahiya’s own evolution as a player. The catalyst for his development came from an unexpected source – his uncle’s son, who recognised raw talent where others saw just another village boy.

“He introduced me to the game. He made me start playing. He guided me constantly, gave me advice regularly, and worked very hard with me,” he noted.

Dahiya’s rise through the ranks hasn’t been built on flashy moves or attention-grabbing antics. Instead, he’s earned his reputation as a “silent killer” – a defender who strikes with precision rather than spectacle.

His philosophy is refreshingly simple yet profound: “You have to play with patience. Don’t be too aggressive, and don’t make too many mistakes. Make your tackles at the right time. Play for your team. When there’s a need to tackle, I tackle for my team. Don’t play for yourself.”

The record-breaking contract brings with it enormous expectations, but Dahiya appears unfazed by the pressure.

“I feel very good being part of Bengaluru Bulls. I will play for them and represent them this season,” he states with the quiet confidence that has become his trademark.

His ambitions for the upcoming season are crystal clear, as he concluded by saying, “I want to do my best for my team. And this year, I hope we can lift the cup – that’s what I’m aiming for.” (ANI)

SC Tells Centre, Delhi Police To Trace Missing Russian Woman In Custody Case

In a custody dispute involving a four-year-old child, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to issue a lookout notice against a Russian woman accused of absconding with the child, born out of wedlock with her Indian husband.

A Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi also directed the Commissioner of Delhi Police and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Defence Colony Police Station to “trace the missing child without any loss of time and hand over custody to the husband.”

Additionally, the Bench further ordered Indian authorities to seize the passport of the Russian woman and instructed airport and immigration authorities to monitor all entry and exit points across the country.

The apex court has also directed Indian authorities to seek permission to enter the residential premises of the said Russian official in order to trace the child.

“Officers from the MEA shall approach the Russian Embassy authorities and seek permission to enter the residential premises of the said Russian official in order to trace the child. As of now, we expect the highest authorities in the Russian Embassy to fully cooperate with Indian authorities, including the Delhi Police, to ensure compliance with the orders of this Court. A copy of this order shall be handed over to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, for immediate and necessary compliance. This order shall also be circulated to all airport authorities across India, and immigration authorities are directed to ensure that the petitioner does not leave the country”, the Court said in its order.

The Court has listed the matter for further hearing on Friday (July 18).

During the hearing, the court also took note of the “doubtful conduct” of the counsel representing the Russian woman.

The Indian husband, Saikat Basu, has alleged that his Russian wife was seen entering the Russian embassy through the back door, accompanied by her heavy luggage bags and an official from the Russian embassy, earlier this month. Subsequently, she is believed to have absconded along with the child.

The Bench also took note of allegations that the Russian woman is allegedly in a relationship with an official of the Russian Embassy.

Notably, the Russian woman’s father is believed to be a retired officer of the FSB, the Russian intelligence agency.

The couple had initially met in China, where the husband worked as an engineer with TCS. They were married in India in 2017. (ANI)

Ajay Kumar Lallu, Others Detained During Odisha Bandh Over Balasore Death

Police on Thursday detained several opposition leaders and workers, including State Congress in-charge Ajay Kumar Lallu, during the Odisha Bandh called to protest the death of a college student in Balasore who recently succumbed in hospital to injuries sustained after setting herself on fire last week.

Odisha Congress in-charge Ajay Kumar Lallu accused the state government of trying to deny justice to the college student. Alleging that the government was using force to stop protests, he stated that the Congress would not be afraid.

“The State government does not want to give justice to the victim and has resorted to hooliganism….We will not be intimidated and will continue to raise our voice against the state government. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Odisha CM will have to resign,” the Congress leader said.

Congress workers also blocked railway tracks in Balasore as part of the protest against the State government.

Transport services were hit and shops remained shut in Bhubaneswar on Thursday as several opposition parties observed an Odisha bandh.

A man who was waiting to board a bus in Bhubaneswar stated that people are facing transportation issues due to the State bandh, but added that the protest is necessary when the administration fails to act.

Speaking to ANI, the man who said his name was Ayush said, “… We are not able to book cabs or autos and are facing challenges in transportation…I support the Odisha bandh because if the administration does not work, protest is the only option…”

Security forces were deployed, and petrol pumps remained closed in Odisha’s capital city as several opposition parties observed the state bandh.

The bandh also caused long traffic jams on the Chennai-Kolkata Highway, where trucks and other vehicles were left stranded. Bus services were impacted in different parts of the state.

On Tuesday, eight Opposition political parties, including the Congress, unitedly called for ‘Odisha Bandh’ for today. They are demanding the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation in the demise of the student.

The 20-year-old student had allegedly faced prolonged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite filing a formal complaint and seeking help from the college principal, her grievances reportedly went unheard, leading her to take the extreme step on campus on July 12.

She was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on July 14, hospital authorities said.

In connection with the case, Fakir Mohan College’s HoD, Samira Kumar Sahu, and Principal, Dilip Ghose, have been arrested. (ANI)

Shah Warns Of Consequences If India Is Attacked

Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping the country secure, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that through Operation Sindoor, India had sent a strong message to the world that it would retaliate if attacked.

Addressing a public event in Dadiya village in Jaipur, Shah said, “Under the leadership of Modi ji, India has become the fourth largest economy in the world. Additionally, 27 crore people have been alleviated from poverty. The biggest thing Modi ji has done is to make the country secure. During Congress’s tenure, there were frequent terror attacks. Modi ji conducted a surgical strike after the Uri attack, an airstrike after the Pulwama attack, and Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam attack. We have sent a strong message to the world that there will be consequences if India is attacked…”

He noted the NDA government’s achievements in the last 11 years, including providing houses, toilets, gas, electricity, and free rations to 60 crore poor individuals across the country.

“MoUs worth Rs 35 lakh crores were signed during the Rajasthan Global Investors’ Summit. In the last 11 years, the Modi government has provided houses, toilets, gas, electricity, and free rations to 60 crore poor individuals across the country. All these schemes are being implemented well in Rajasthan under Bhajanlal ji’s government,” Shah said.

India had launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.

A day earlier, Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the Delhi Master Plan 2041 (MPD-2041), bringing together key stakeholders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Delhi Home and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood also attended the meeting, which comes a day after a separate review session on the provisions of the MPD-2041 was conducted at the Delhi Secretariat. (ANI)

‘Very Close To A Deal With India…We’re In Negotiation’: US President Trump

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time)hinted at reaching a new trade deal with India soon. While adding “maybe”, he said that currently the US is in negotiations with India.

Trump, while speaking to reporters during a bilateral meeting with Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, emphasised that August 1 will be a significant day, when a lot of money will come into his country.

“…We’ve brought in over $100 billion. The tariffs haven’t kicked in significantly, except for automobiles and steel. August 1st is when a very substantial money comes into our country. We’ve made deals with numerous places. We had one yesterday,” Trump said.

“We have another one (deal) coming up, maybe with India… We’re in negotiation. When I send out a letter, that’s a deal… The best deal we can make is to send out a letter, and the letter says that you’ll pay 30%, 35%, 25%, 20%… We have some pretty good deals to announce… We’re very close to a deal with India where they open it up,” Trump added.

The US President on Tuesday said the United States is working on a deal that gives it access to the Indian markets. He also announced a new trade deal with Indonesia, after which the latter will face a reduced tariff rate of 19 per cent.

Announcing progress on the India part, Trump stated, “We’re going to have access into India. And you have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn’t go in. And now we’re getting access because of what we’re doing with the tariffs.

“The ongoing bilateral trade talks (BTA) negotiations by India and the United States (US) are progressing as per the decisions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, said the government officials on Tuesday.

“Our team is back in the US for carrying out the fifth round of negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement, so that agreement is progressing as per the decisions of our leaders and as per the terms of reference decided between the two countries,” the government officials told ANI. (ANI)
