Indian Trade Groups Disappointed With Trump’s View About Tariffs On India

Indian trade bodies have expressed disappointment over US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25 per cent tariffs and additional penalties on imports of goods from India, calling it a setback for the Indian export market while also highlighting potential opportunities for export diversification and supply chain realignment.

While some trade and industry leaders warned of short-term disruptions, others expressed confidence that India’s strong manufacturing base, especially in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, would help it withstand the impact and forge new trade partnerships.

Subhash Goyal, Chairman of the Tourism Expert Committee at the Chamber of Commerce, called it “a sad day for Indian exports,” warning that the tariffs would slow exports and impact manufacturing.

“It is a sad day for Indian exports because India is doing exports worth over USD 100 billion, and the surplus is over USD 40 billion,” Goyal said, adding, “It will slow down some of our exports, and there will be a ripple effect on our manufacturing… But it will also adversely affect the American consumers. We are seeing that a lot of American airports are devoid of tourists… India will also have to diversify its export markets, and it will have to relook at certain Asian and European markets.”

Dilip Kumar, Chairman of Medical Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, said, “… He (US President Trump) is trying to kill the market of the Indian economy, but it is not going to happen. The reason behind this is that we are exporters, especially of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and disposables, which mostly come from India.”

“The American market is dependent upon the Indian and Chinese markets… The cost of the treatment and procedure will increase in America… His country’s people are affected by this rather than India. India won’t be impacted, as we will go by the route of exporting to the European countries. We can survive in the toughest times and bounce back,” Kumar added.

Ranjeet Mehta, CEO and Secretary General of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), said India is now entering an era of global supply chain realignments.

“The US is also recalibrating its trade policy by imposing tariffs on major exporting economies like China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India. There will be a momentary impact on our MSMEs, but we see this as an opportunity as well. This is the time that India scales it up… we have the demographic dividend, technological agility, and entrepreneurial depth. India is being seen as one of the most promising partners by the global leaders looking to de-risk their over-dependence on selected economies… Even the US consumers will have to pay more for the products. When there are numerous tariffs across economies, the consumer will be impacted ultimately,” he said.

Mehta added, “Recently, India has signed a comprehensive agreement with the UK. We are in advanced (stage of) discussions with various nations… India is going to gain with the tariff imposed, because it will emerge as a very reliable partner for the global players looking to realign their supply chain…”

US President Trump on Wednesday announced 25 per cent tariffs on India starting August 1. Trump also said India will face additional penalties for purchasing oil from Russia.

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social account.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) expressed disappointment over the decision, with its President Harsha Vardhan Agarwal calling the move “unfortunate” and saying it would “have a clear bearing on our exports.”

“FICCI is disappointed by the decision taken by the U.S. to levy a 25 per cent tariff on exports from India and impose secondary sanctions. While this move is unfortunate and will have a clear bearing on our exports, we hope that this imposition of higher tariffs will be a short-term phenomenon and that a permanent trade deal between the two sides will be finalised soon,” Agarwal said in a statement.

Dr Ajay Sahai, DG and CEO of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), said the penalties were “disappointing” and that discussions with the US on a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) were ongoing.

“The 25 per cent tariff imposed on India is a little disappointing for us, and we are constantly engaged with the US on the BTA. The ‘penalty’ President Trump has talked about is also not clear… In a few months, there will be a BTA between India and the US, and these tariffs will come down significantly…” Sahai said.

Manoranjan Sharma, Chief Economist of Infomerics Ratings, suggested that Indian industries will have to do some kind of repositioning.

“This is important because the US is our largest trading partner and the largest exporting destination. We can offset this impact to a limited extent by trade agreements with the UK, the European Union, and the Middle East. There is no doubt that this will cause a major hit on the incomes and profits of the products of the companies exporting to the US,” he said.

Claiming that the recent US-Indonesia trade deal was a “clear example of how aggressive US pressure can force” countries to ink one-sided agreements, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) suggested that India be careful and not “fall into the same trap”.

Ajay Srivastava, founder of the GTRI told ANI that 25 per cent tariffs would have a varied impact on different sectors. He essentially meant that India will have a competitive advantage vis-à-vis countries that have been slapped with even higher tariffs.

US President Trump’s decision came two days ahead of the impending US tariff deadline of August 1.

Over the past few months, India and the US have been negotiating for an interim trade deal, but there were some reservations from the Indian side on the US demand for opening up the agricultural and dairy sectors for the US. Agriculture and dairy are critical for India as these two sectors provide livelihood opportunities to a large section of its people.

US President Trump had imposed reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries with which the US has a trade deficit. Later, President Trump decided to pause the tariffs for 90 days after many countries initiated talks with the US administration for a trade deal. In these 90 days, starting April 9 and ending on July 9, President Trump imposed a 10 per cent baseline tariff on all countries.

The Trump administration had deferred imposing additional tariffs on several countries till August 1, and had indicated a further extension was unlikely. Since assuming office for his second term, President Trump has reiterated his stance on tariff reciprocity, emphasising that the United States will match tariffs imposed by other countries, including India, to ensure fair trade.

On Tuesday, ahead of the self-imposed August 1 deadline date for tariffs to come into effect, President Trump had stated that the India-US trade deal was “working out very well” but hinted at a 20 per cent to 25 per cent tariff, which he eventually announced today.

Representatives of India’s Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative have held several rounds of talks to conclude a trade agreement.

India and the United States have agreed to expand bilateral trade to reach USD 500 billion by 2030, including through the conclusion of a Bilateral Trade Agreement by the fall of 2025. (ANI)

Rajkummar’s Advocate Shares Details Of Controversial Poster Court Case During ‘Behen Hogi Teri’ Promotions

A court hearing was held against Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao regarding a controversial poster during the promotion of ‘Behen Hogi Teri’ in 2017.

The hearing was held today in Jalandhar, however, the actor didn’t appear in the hearing said his advocate, Darshan Singh Dayal.

Darshan Dayal shared details of the Rajkummar Rao case. The advocate said that in 2017 a poster of Shivaji in the film triggered anger among a section of people.

During this time, a case was registered against actors Rajkumar Rao, Shruti Hassan, the producer, director and deputy director of the film.

The FIR was registered under Section 295A (act done with the intention of inciting religious sentiments), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 67 of the IT Act, due to which non-bailable warrants were also issued against the actor, said advocate Darshan Dayal.

Rajkummar Rao surrendered before the court in Jalandhar on July 28 in connection with the case related to his ‘Behen Hogi Teri’ film. After presenting himself before the court, the actor was granted conditional bail.

“The challan was presented in the court in the absence of the actor. Since the address in the summons was in Delhi, he was not informed about appearing in the court. Actually, the actor is living in Mumbai. On the other hand, Shruti Hassan was acquitted in the case after the court found her innocent. Ajay K Pannalal (Director of the film) has reached the court today, whose petition has been filed in the court,” said advocate Darshan.

The petition further stated that the actor merely played a film character, in which his character potrayed the role of Lord Shiva in a Jagran troupe, and this is a completely artistic presentation. There was no intention to hurt the religious sentiments of any community, said advocate Darshan Singh Dayal.

Rajkummar Rao argued that the film “Behen Hogi Teri” had received a Central Board of Film Certification certificate, indicating that the content of the film was not legally objectionable. It also said that his freedom of expression was protected under Article 19(1)(a), according to Darshan.

Behen Hogi Teri was directed by Ajay K Pannalal and starred Rajkummar Rao and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles.

Rajkummar Rao was last seen in the film ‘Maalik’. (ANI)

Uyghur Lives Bartered For Cotton, Solar Panels: China’s Atrocities Feed Global Trade

Over the past decade, China has escalated a brutal campaign of systematic repression against the Uyghur people, an indigenous Turkic Muslim group native to the region known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or East Turkestan.

Despite global outcry and mounting evidence of mass human rights violations, China’s authoritarian regime continues to entrench its draconian control over the region, the Atlantic Council reported.

Since 2017, an estimated two million Uyghurs have been arbitrarily detained in vast internment camps, where they are subjected to forced political indoctrination, torture, organ harvesting, and compelled rejection of their faith and ethnic identity. The Atlantic Council noted that these acts have been identified by the United Nations as possible crimes against humanity, while governments, including the United States, have officially recognised them as genocide.

But for the Uyghurs who manage to escape imprisonment, another grim fate awaits: China’s state-sponsored forced labour programs. According to the Atlantic Council, these programs operate through two main systems: exploiting camp detainees for industrial labour, and forcibly transferring Uyghurs under the guise of “poverty alleviation” to work in factories and fields across China. Both rely on coercion, intimidation, and cultural erasure through language bans and indoctrination.

The Uyghur Region is deeply embedded in global supply chains. It produces 20 per cent of the world’s cotton, 25 per cent of its tomatoes, 45 per cent of its solar-grade polysilicon, and nearly 9 per cent of its aluminium. These resources, tainted by forced labour, make their way into products consumed globally, clothing, electronics, agriculture, and even seafood found in US federal food programs and aid shipments, as reported by the Atlantic Council.

In response, the United States has taken a leading role in confronting China’s forced labour regime. The landmark Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act (UFLPA), signed into law in 2021, created a presumption that any goods from the Uyghur Region are produced under forced labour unless proven otherwise. The Atlantic Council stated that since enforcement began in June 2022, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized over USD 3.69 billion worth of goods, blocking nearly USD 1 billion in imports.

As of January 2025, the UFLPA Entity List includes 144 companies tied to Uyghur forced labour. However, the Atlantic Council warned that progress may stall without renewed efforts. The Trump administration’s recent closure of the de minimis exemption, a loophole that allowed low-value Chinese goods into the US without inspection, is a step forward. Yet rising tariffs on US allies could inadvertently incentivise cost-cutting that reopens doors to unethical Chinese supply chains.

The Atlantic Council emphasised the urgent need for continued vigilance. Adding new entities to the UFLPA blacklist, passing the No Dollars to Uyghur Forced Labour Act, and staffing Uyghur-focused agencies with regional and sanctions expertise are key to curbing Beijing’s abuses.

Despite geopolitical distractions, the Atlantic Council stressed that Uyghur human rights must remain a cornerstone of US foreign policy. As China deepens its repression, Washington must lead with clarity, consistency, and a firm commitment to justice. (ANI)

Tsunami Warning In Effect For Hawaii, Trump Notes Post 8.8 Pacific Quake

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday noted a tsunami warning issued after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean.

Trump asked people to visit their government portal for the latest information and be updated.

In a post on X, he said, “Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit https://tsunami.gov for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!”

National Weather Service Los Angeles said that a tsunami advisory has been issued, stating that a tsunami may arrive at 1am (local time).

In a post on X, NWS Los Angeles said, “A Tsunami Advisory has been issued, replacing the Tsunami Watch. The tsunami should arrive near 1AM tonight. If you are located in the coastal area, move off the beach & out of harbors & marinas. Do not go to the coast to watch. Be alert to instructions from local EM officials.”

The National Weather Service in Eureka, California, said that multiple waves were expected at 11:50 pm (local time).

In a post on X, he said, “A Tsunami Advisory is in effect for the coastal areas of California. First wave arrival is expected around 1150 PM PDT. Multiple waves are expected, lasting for 10-36 hours. Move off the beach and out of harbors/marinas. Mariners are advised to get to depth of 30 fathoms.”

The National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area office has warned that people could put themselves at risk, as well as members of the emergency services, if they go to take photos of the expected tsunami, as per Al Jazeera.

“This will NOT be a single wave. Do NOT try to go to the coast to take photos,” the service said on social media. San Francisco’s Bay Area is under a tsunami advisory.

The US Coastguard’s captain of the port of Honolulu has ordered all commercial vessels to “evacuate” commercial ports in Hawaii.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) revised the strength of the earthquake, which struck off Russia’s far-east coast at 8:25 am local time on Wednesday, to a magnitude of 8.8. The magnitude of the quake was initially reported at 8.0 and later revised upwards to 8.7. (ANI)

Tibet Rocked By Second Earthquake In A Day

Second earthquake struck Tibet on Wednesday, measuring 4.0 magnitude, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.

As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 30/07/2025 11:31:02 IST, Lat: 28.32 N, Long: 87.65 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet.”

Earlier in the day, an earthquake measuring 4.3 had struck the region.

In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.3, On: 30/07/2025 06:58:42 IST, Lat: 28.36 N, Long: 87.68 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet.”

Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties.

The Tibetan Plateau is known for its seismic activity due to tectonic plate collisions.

Tibet and Nepal lie on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, and earthquakes are a regular occurrence as a result of it. The region is seismically active due to tectonic uplifts that can grow strong enough to change the heights of the Himalayas’ peaks.

Meanwhile, downpour in Tibet early on Wednesday morning triggered flood in rivers flowing in Nepal, prompting authorities to issue warning in three districts.

The district of Rasuwa, adjoining the Tibetan side which was hit by a flash flood on July 8 had claimed seven lives with over a dozen still missing, after Lhende River swept infrastructure near Nepal-China border.

Heavy rainfall in Tibet earlier this morning has triggered flooding in the Trishuli River, raising water levels in areas around Uttar Gaya in Rasuwa and the Trishuli 3B Hub in Kispang. Authorities have issued warnings as water flow continues to rise in the Rasuwagadhi area. (ANI)

Russia: Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Struck Off Coast Of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Widespread Tsunami Warnings Across Pacific

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 on Wednesday morning rattled across Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, triggering widespread tsunami warnings across the Pacific.

As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 20.7km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

Another earthquake of the same magnitude followed soon after.

“Notable quake, preliminary info: M 8.0 – 136 km ESE of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia,” USGS stated.

Two aftershocks followed, one of magnitude 6.9 and 6.3 on the Richter Scale.

“Notable quake, preliminary info: M 6.9 – 147 km SE of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia,” the USGS noted.

“Notable quake, preliminary info: M 6.3 – 131 km SE of Vilyuchinsk, Russia,” USGS said.

Tsunami waves of up to 3-4 meters were recorded in Kamchatka, according to regional emergency minister Sergei Lebedev. Evacuations were ordered in Kamchatka, Japan, and other locations, including Hawaii, where a tsunami watch is in effect.

A tsunami has hit Russia’s far east coast, flooding a port town home to about 2,000 people, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said. “The tsunami flooded parts of the port town of Severo-Kurilsk … The population has been evacuated,” the ministry said in a statement, as per Al Jazeera.

The July 29, 2025, M8.8 earthquake east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, occurred as the result of shallow reverse faulting. At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is moving west-northwest with respect to the North America plate at about 77 mm/yr. Note, the North American plate extends westward beyond the North American continent. The earthquake’s location and sense of motion is consistent with faulting on the subduction zone plate interface of the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc, the USGS said in a statement.

While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Reverse faulting events of the size of the July 29, 2025, earthquake are typically about 390 km by 140 km in size (length x width).

The Kuril-Kamchatka arc has frequent moderate-to-large earthquakes and has hosted 31 additional M 6.5+ events within 250 km of the July 29, 2025, earthquake over the preceding century. This includes a M7.4 earthquake on July 20, 2025, which would now be considered a foreshock of the July 29, 2025, M8.7 event. The July 29, 2025, epicenter is located 45 km southeast of the 1952 M 9.0 Kamchatka earthquake epicenter, which resulted in a destructive, Pacific-wide tsunami, as per USGS. (ANI)

‘A Pity To See Media Selling Conspiracy Theories on Air India Crash’

Nargis Natarajan, an author based in Bhubaneshwar, found it disheartening that several media outlets were selling half-baked stories on Air India tragedy. Her views:

On hearing about the Boeing air crash at Ahmedabad airport recently, my first impression lasted well beyond the tragic moment, ranging from shock and disbelief to grief, anger and apprehension. It wasn’t just watching a tiny bubble burst. The massive explosion was like going through a catalogue of incompetence so complete it’s almost unimaginable.

What really strikes you is that dreaded word ‘avoidable’. Just watching the events unfold — the massive cloud of fire, dust and debris, was a deadly and stark reminder of the collapse of the twin towers. The plane crashing into a building bore an uncanny resemblance to the incident that had not only altered our worldview, but also left a long-term impact on how we see each other.

So yes, I sincerely hoped it wasn’t any terrorist attack; because that would have yet again torn apart the secular fabric of our country. Fortunately, the forces that keep alive a democracy haven’t yet collapsed. But what autocrats don’t realize is that God’s gift to earth is its diversity. It’s this variety of people, of views, of cultures, that gives our nation its strength.

India is like a centipede with a thousand legs, racing forward towards a dream. A terrorist attack of this magnitude would have definitely halted the process.

Indeed, my green opinion doesn’t count. The so called ‘experts’ are busy playing the blame game smashing left and right with their vibrant and colourful opinions. It’s no secret how this toxic sport operates.

Even as we watch with bated breath, waiting for some sensible shots of accountability, the points of doubt and distrust only keep accumulating. Thankfully, some sensible aviation experts insist that the math simply doesn’t add up in so many technical ways. So it’s best to wait, watch and hope; that there is some transparency in the investigation and that we will finally be given answers that sound credible.

ALSO READ: ‘I Get Butterflies In Stomach Before Boarding A Flight’

The pilots, including the captain of the aircraft, are not only ‘dragged’ being but consciously targeted. Releasing a truncated and curtailed conversation is nothing short of assigning blame. A half-detailed report, without any data to support the truth, only pushes us towards the direction of the pilots. Almost like a natural release on a sealed pressure cooker, allowing the steam to decrease gradually until things have cooled down.

In a world that thrives on gossip, certain deadly sharks called journalists, among others, who love a little blood in the water, are busy. Their world is rife with assumptions, suppositions and inferences. The rumour monger factory is in full flow because they know that as long as the focus is entirely on the pilots, the ones truly responsible will be shielded from the disturbing, distressing, disquieting and disconcerting limelight.

However, what we don’t realize is that when we leave everything to ‘interpretations’ there are bound to be bizarre speculations. Even like peddling the ‘suicide’ theory!

Seriously? Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder were qualified, skilled and experienced flyers. They were NOT suicide bombers or Kamikaze pilots. It’s so sad how easily we forget that it is socially inappropriate for the living to speak ill of the dead. Especially those who cannot even defend or justify themselves!

Even if it sounds strange, the Preliminary Report rules out mechanical failure, bird strike, sabotage, conspiracy, and fuel contamination. What is comfortable and convenient is always easy to market — but for challenges and controversies you need guts.  It isn’t as if we lack competence. Perhaps we just lack the courage, because when we start diverting issues, we have already ceased striving for the truth and begun striving for ourselves.

So why give half baked interpretations? Why provide meaningless suppositions and conjectures? Why not wait for the full report with the full data that will finally reveal who or what was responsible; whether it was the microprocessor’s fault; a system failure, a design issue, a software glitch, a tail fire, or a human error.

There are multiple issues that need to be discussed, but right now the media needs to call a spade a spade. They need to highlight how our aviation industry is being throttled by poor policies; how we need to concentrate on safety and maintenance over profit; and how the entire system needs support and not hollow and empty slogans.

In every calamity, the names of the victims are read out. Perhaps what we need is to read out a few other names as well — of all those directly or indirectly liable, even if not all may bear the same degree of responsibility.

Surely, we cannot become serial creators of falsehoods. We need to put our case to the world in a graceful, dignified and honest way. We need journalists who question the government during peace times, so that when any calamity happens, the world believes our narrative.

Lastly, back home, we need to be assured that air travel is safe – so that we can fly with a certain calm, and more confidence.

Prakash Raj Appears Before ED In Alleged Betting App Case

Actor Prakash Raj appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday after he was summoned regarding the alleged ongoing online betting games promotion case.

The ‘Wanted’ actor stopped to pose for the cameras as he entered the ED office at Basheerbagh in Hyderabad.

Earlier this year, the Telangana police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 25 celebrities and influencers, including popular figures like Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi, for allegedly promoting illegal betting and gambling apps through their social media platforms.

The FIR was filed at the Miyapur Police Station in Hyderabad following a petition by 32-year-old businessman PM Phanindra Sarma.

The complaint, lodged on March 19 this year, highlights a disturbing trend of celebrities and influencers promoting illegal gambling apps that violate the Public Gambling Act of 1867.

Sarma claims that during a conversation with youth in his community on March 16, he discovered many individuals had been influenced to invest their money in these gambling apps, which were heavily advertised by social media personalities.

According to the complaint, these celebrities are allegedly accepting large sums of money to promote various betting platforms, which encourage users to gamble their hard-earned money.

Sarma himself was on the verge of investing in one of these platforms but refrained after his family warned him about the potential financial dangers.

The police report lists several celebrities and influencers who are accused of promoting illegal gambling apps, including: Rana Daggubati Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, Manchu Lakshmi, Praneetha, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagella, Siri Hanumanthu, Sreemukhi, Varshini Sounderajan and many others.

The petition emphasizes that these apps and platforms are causing widespread financial harm, particularly among lower and middle-class families who are being lured into the false promise of easy money.

The apps often rely on celebrities to build credibility, leading vulnerable individuals to invest substantial amounts of money, only to face financial ruin.

The Telangana police have charged the accused under multiple sections of the TS Gaming Act and the IT Act, including Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, which deals with cheating and identity theft.

The FIR also includes sections that address the promotion of illegal betting activities, with the investigation now being handled by Officer G Ramesh Naidu.

“This investigation underscores our commitment to protecting the public from harmful gambling and betting platforms that exploit individuals for financial gain,” said K Kranthi Kumar, Inspector of Police, Police Stations Miyapur.

Prakash Raj is known for his negative roles in films, including ‘Wanted’ and ‘Singham’ and has appeared in over 300 films in his career. (ANI)

‘Major Collaboration’: Scientist On NASA-ISRO’s NISAR Launch Breakthrough

Space scientist and professor RC Kapoor has lauded NISAR as “the most advanced Earth observation satellite” to date.

Speaking to ANI ahead of the launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, Kapoor said, “It’s a major collaboration between two great agencies, NASA and ISRO. It’s going to be placed in orbit around the Earth, at a height of about 743km. It will scan the entire Earth in about 12 days.”

The scientist said that NISAR will produce an enormous volume of high-resolution data daily, providing critical insights for scientists, disaster management authorities, policymakers, and environmental researchers.

He said, “It will generate a tremendous amount of data per day, which will be greatly useful to many decision makers, disaster managers, and others who want to make a detailed study of the Earth. As of today, it is going to be the most advanced Earth observation satellite.”

The NISAR is slated to launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh today at 17:40 IST.

The mission has seen a long gestation period of over a decade and a joint investment exceeding USD 1.5 billion.

The satellite will be launched into orbit onboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-F16. Usually, PSLV is utilised for such an orbit, and this is the first time that a GSLV rocket is injecting a satellite into a Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit. The NISAR satellite weighs 2,392 kg and will be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit.

It will orbit the Earth once every 97 minutes and send images of Earth’s land and ice surfaces, as well as specific portions of the ocean’s surface, every 12 days.

The mission’s primary objectives are to study land & ice deformation, land ecosystems, and oceanic regions in areas of common interest to the US and Indian science communities.

The mission life of the satellite is expected to last five years. (ANI)
