MHA Writes To States, UTs To Ensure Special Facilities For Elderly Prisoners

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has written to all states and Union Territories (UTs) to make special provisions in prisons and correctional institutions to ensure the safety, care, and well-being of elderly inmates.

In an advisory issued on July 1, the MHA highlighted that prison institutions across the country house several vulnerable inmates, including senior citizens who often require additional assistance to manage their day-to-day activities in a custodial environment.

The advisory has been sent to the Chief Secretaries of all states and UTs, as well as, the Director General and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services.

Reiterating its commitment to the welfare of elderly citizens, the MHA emphasized the need for “specially accessible accommodations in prisons” to meet the physical needs of aged inmates.

“The states and UTs are requested to make suitable provisions for special accessible accommodation in prisons and correctional institutions for the elderly prisoners, keeping in view their physical limitations,” reads the advisory.

It further urged prison authorities to take into account the dietary requirements of elderly prisoners and develop meal plans tailored to their age-related health challenges.

The advisory also stressed the importance of providing adequate healthcare services, including mental health support, to cater to the specific needs of the elderly population behind bars. Moreover, prison staff should be sensitised and trained to better understand and respond to the challenges faced by senior inmates.

“Special attention may also be given to the dietary requirement of such elderly inmates, with meal plans curated in accordance with the challenges of advanced age. It may also be ensured that adequate healthcare facilities—including mental health services are made available in prisons to address the special needs of elderly inmates,” mentions the advisory.

States and UTs have been asked to take appropriate and prompt measures to implement these recommendations aimed at enhancing the quality of custodial life for elderly prisoners. (ANI)

Trump, Netanyahu Back Gaza Relocation Plan Amid Ceasefire Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday (local time), with both leaders reiterating their controversial proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to other countries–a move that critics have condemned as forced transfer, Al Jazeera reported.

The meeting took place over dinner in the Blue Room as indirect US-backed negotiations between Israel and Hamas continued in Qatar for a potential 60-day ceasefire to halt the ongoing 21-month war in Gaza.

“We’re working with the United States very closely about finding countries that will seek to realise what they always say, that they wanted to give the Palestinians a better future. I think we’re getting close to finding several countries,” Netanyahu said.

“If people want to stay, they can stay, but if they want to leave, they should be able to leave. It shouldn’t be a prison. It should be an open place and give people a free choice,” he added.

Trump, who earlier sparked backlash for suggesting Gaza be turned into a “Riviera of the Middle East,” reiterated his support for the idea and said, “So something good will happen.” He also claimed there had been “great cooperation” from neighbouring countries on the matter.

“This is something the Israelis have been saying for some time, calling it the ‘voluntary migration’ of Palestinians from their homelands. But of course, this has been condemned as ethnic cleansing,” Al Jazeera correspondent Hamdah Salhut reported from Amman, Jordan.

Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas told Al Jazeera that despite repeated public statements about relocation, there is no clear or actionable plan. “The fact that the Israeli defence minister blurts some ideas out, or even the prime minister, or even the president of the United States, doesn’t mean there is a plan,” he said.

“In early February, Trump spoke about a Palestinian Riviera, and within 36 hours, he changed that from a Riviera for the Palestinians to the Palestinians will be expelled,” he added.

Amid reports that the Boston Consulting Group was asked to draft a relocation plan, Pinkas cautioned that such concepts “don’t mean it’s implementable… it is a recipe for catastrophe because it ensures that no [post-war] agreement in Gaza is durable.”

Monday’s dinner came as indirect ceasefire negotiations in Qatar continued, with Israeli and Hamas negotiators in separate rooms discussing a 60-day halt in fighting. The draft framework includes a phased release of captives, Israeli withdrawals from parts of Gaza, and broader talks to end the war.

Netanyahu, however, rejected a full Palestinian state and insisted Israel would “always” retain security control over Gaza. Hamas demands a full withdrawal and the release of all Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages.

Trump had predicted a ceasefire agreement could be reached this week, but no official announcements followed Monday’s session. His special envoy Steve Witkoff, credited with shaping the latest proposals, is expected to join the negotiations in Qatar this week.

During their White House meeting, Netanyahu presented Trump with a letter used to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. “So much of this is about optics,” said Al Jazeera correspondent Phil Lavelle from Washington, DC. “Of course, the [Israeli] prime minister will be very keen to make sure that this is seen back home as a major success.”

Trump, who has long expressed a desire to win a Nobel, referenced previous ceasefires his administration helped broker between India and Pakistan, and between the DRC and Rwanda.

He also said that Iran had reached out to restart talks on its nuclear programme. “We have scheduled Iran talks, and they … want to talk. They took a big drubbing,” Trump said. Witkoff indicated the talks could happen “perhaps in a week.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in an interview released Monday with US journalist Tucker Carlson, said he believed differences with Washington could be resolved through dialogue. (ANI)

Support Boxing Like Cricket: Nupur After World Cup Gold

After winning the gold medal at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, Indian boxer Nupur urged the citizens of the country to support them in the same way they support the cricketers and opened up on her title clash.

Nupur then overcame the challenge of Kazakhstan boxer Yeldana Talipova to earn a 5:0 verdict in the 80+kg final. Nupur struggled at the start against Talipova as the home boxer took the opening round. But the Indian boxer completely dominated the next two rounds, landing punches at will and out-thinking her opponent to have the last laugh.

On winning a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, Nupur told ANI, “On July 6, we had our finals of the World Cup in Kazakhstan. In that, I won the gold medal in the 80 kg plus category, and it was a great feeling. My final fight happened with a girl from the host nation. She is currently number 2 in the world ranking, and recently, she won the silver medal in the world championship. I had a good fight with her. People over there have a great interest in boxing. Like people in India support cricket, they should also support boxing…”

In the finals of the 57 Kg category, Jaismine Lamboria had to use her long reach to keep her Brazilian opponent at bay in the third and final round, after there was not much to separate the two after the first two rounds. The tall 23-year-old stayed away from her opponent in the final round and landed punches on the counterattack to get the judges’ nod.

On winning a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, Jasmine said, “At the World Cup hosted in Kazakhstan, I represented India and performed very well and won the gold medal for the nation. I fought around four fights; in the finals only, the decision was coming like 3-2. But according to the strategy told by the coach, the bout came in our favour.”

Sakshi was at her attacking best against USA’s Yosline Perez to get a unanimous verdict from the judges in the women’s 54kg final, while Jaismine kept her cool under pressure to get the better of Jucielen Cequeira Romeu of Brazil 4:1 in the women’s 57kg weight category.

On winning a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, Sakshi said, “It is a very good feeling; it was a very good competition. There were many tough girls, and I won all the bouts by 5-0… The toughest fight that I had was with the USA, but I won all the bouts by a 5-0 unanimous decision. In my weight category, many girls were Olympic medalists, so it was a good competition.”

The Indian contingent finished with 11 medals, including three gold, five silver and three bronze medals. India had bagged six medals in the first leg in Brazil, including a gold and a silver. (ANI)

Parliament Panel To Review Aviation Safety After AI-171 Crash

In the wake of the recent tragic crash involving an Air India aircraft at Ahmedabad Airport, concerns over aviation safety in India have surged. The incident, which resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, has prompted authorities and government officials to undertake urgent reviews of the country’s aviation safety protocols.

Sources indicate that on Wednesday, a full-day session will be convened by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture to deliberate specifically on issues related to aviation safety and security. The committee, led by JD(U) Member of Parliament Sanjay Jha, has called for this high-level meeting to assess the current safety landscape, especially in light of the recent spate of incidents involving various airlines and airports across India.

The meeting will bring together a wide panel of key stakeholders, including members of both Houses of Parliament, officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the regulatory authority overseeing civil aviation safety standards, as well as the Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and senior officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). They will provide insights into infrastructure and operational challenges across the sector.

In addition to government representatives, the meeting will also feature top executives and safety officials from leading airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air, and others, along with representatives from private airport operators, including the Adani and GMR groups, who manage several major airports in India. The purpose of the session is to facilitate a comprehensive discussion on recent safety lapses, review existing policies, and explore necessary reforms to prevent future accidents.

India’s aviation sector, one of the fastest-growing in the world, transports over 400 million passengers annually. However, rapid expansion has often outpaced safety infrastructure, raising concerns about compliance, maintenance standards, and operational oversight.

Several incidents involving emergency landings, diversions, runway skids, bomb hoax calls, and other technical issues have been reported in recent weeks. ANI has learned that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has submitted its initial report on the Air India AI-171 Ahmedabad crash to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

India’s civil aviation safety standards have come under increased scrutiny, especially after concerns were raised by international bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regarding India’s adherence to global safety norms. In response, the DGCA has initiated multiple audits of both airlines and airport facilities.

Facilities at many airports, particularly smaller regional ones, require upgrades to outdated technology and improvements in emergency response capabilities. Work is already underway to enhance navigation systems, runway lighting, and air traffic control operations.

The upcoming parliamentary meeting underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation safety. Key discussion points are expected to include the implementation of stricter maintenance and inspection regimes and a comprehensive review of current safety protocols.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has previously announced plans to invest over Rs 1 lakh crore in the development of new airports and the upgrading of existing infrastructure over the next five years. This meeting reflects a renewed focus on ensuring that safety remains a top priority amid rapid sector growth.

As India seeks to solidify its position as a major global aviation hub, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew remains paramount. The outcomes of Wednesday’s high-level meeting will be critical in bolstering passenger confidence and strengthening oversight across the aviation sector. (ANI)

‘We Will Send Some More Weapons’: Trump, After Reports On Pause US Aid To Ukraine

US President Donald Trump reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities, stating that the US would be sending weapons to Ukraine to defend itself from Russia amid the conflict that is currently in its third year.

This came following a recent report that the Trump administration temporarily halted certain weapons deliveries to Ukraine amid a review of US military spending and foreign aid, CNN reported, citing a senior White House official.

Trump’s remark came during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday (local time), where he further noted that the US would be primarily sending defensive weapons to Ukraine.

“We are going to send some more weapons (to Ukraine). We have to– They have to be able to defend themselves. They are getting hit very hard now… We’re gonna have to send more weapons. Defensive weapons, primarily. They are getting very, very hard. So many people are dying in that mess,” the US President said.

Earlier in the day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, during a briefing, also dismissed the reports of the US pausing its weapons aid to Ukraine, noting that it was a “standard review” by the Pentagon and was done to ensure that aid was being sent for the “best interest” of the US.

“This was a standard review by the Pentagon of all weapons and all aid and all support that the United States is providing all countries and all regions around the globe… It’s a pause to review that everything the Pentagon is putting out there is in the best interest of our military,” she stated.

This came after the Trump administration temporarily suspended certain arms shipments to Ukraine–including air defence systems–due to an ongoing review of US military expenditures and foreign assistance.

As per CNN, citing a White House official, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the review, which has reportedly been in progress for several months.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the US has been Ukraine’s largest individual provider of military assistance, supplying key equipment such as air defence systems, drones, rocket launchers, radars, tanks, and anti-armour weapons, raising concerns about the strain on US stockpiles, as reported by CNN.

Earlier in March, Trump temporarily suspended all military aid to Ukraine after a heated Oval Office exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; however, the aid deliveries resumed roughly a week later, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, Russia launched over 500 drones and 11 missiles at Kyiv, resulting in the death of one person, injuries to at least 23 others, and widespread damage to buildings across the capital, Al Jazeera reported, citing Ukrainian authorities. (ANI)

US Close To Making Deal With India: Trump Amid New Tariffs Against 14 Nations

President Donald Trump said on Monday night (local time) that the US is close to reaching a trade deal with India, even as he announced tariffs on 14 nations.

While speaking to reporters as he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday (local time), Trump stated that the US had made a deal with the UK and China. He stated that he had sent a letter to the nations that he believed would not make a deal with the US.

When asked about tariffs, Trump responded, “We’ve spoken to everybody. …it’s all done. I told you we’ll make some deals, but for the most part, we’re going to send a letter. We’re going to say, welcome to the United States if you’d like to participate in the greatest, most successful country ever. I mean we are doing better than ever… We’ve never had numbers like this. We’ve never had investment like this. We have more than 90… have much more than 90. But most of those are going to be sent to letter. This is exactly what I said. Now we’ve made a deal with United Kingdom. We’ve made a deal with China. We’re close to making a deal with India. Others we met with and we don’t think we’re going to be able to make a deal. So we just send them a letter.

“If you want to play ball, …this is what you have to pay… As far as I’m concerned, we’re done. We’re sending out letters to various countries telling them how much tariffs they have to pay. Some will maybe adjust a little bit, depending if they have a, cause. We’re not going to be unfair about it and actually, it’s a small fraction compared to what we should be getting. We should be, we could be asking for much more. But for the sake of relationships that we’ve had with a lot of really good countries, we’re doing the way I do it. We could be getting a lot more. We could ask for a lot more than what we’re asking for,” he added.

His remarks came after he announced new tariffs for 14 nations, including Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Japan, that will take effect on August 1.

Earlier, Trump shared letters sent by his administration to 14 countries on his social media platform Truth Social, informing them of the reciprocal tariffs that will take effect from August 1.

Trump first shared the letters sent to Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung. Around two hours later, he announced similar letters were sent to Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar and Laos.

Later, he shared tariff letters sent to leaders of other countries, including Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Cambodia.

According to the letters, Thailand and Cambodia each will face a tariff of 36 per cent while and Bangladesh and Serbia will each be hit with a tariff of 35 per cent. In the letters, Trump mentioned that Malaysia and Kazakhstan will each face 25 per cent tariffs.

Myanmar and Laos will face a 40 per cent tariff on their goods exported to the US. Indonesia will face a tariff rate of 32 per cent. Imports from South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be subject to 30 per cent tariffs on August 1. According to the letters, Tunisia will face a tariff of 25 per cent.

In the letters written to the South Korean President and the Japanese Prime Minister, Trump stated that Japan and South Korea will face a 25 per cent tariff from August 1.

In the letters, Trump threatened to increase the tariff rate by the same amount if the countries decided to raise their tariffs on importing American products. However, the US President indicated his willingness to reduce these tariffs if these countries revised their trade policies.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order delaying his July 9 tariff deadline to August 1.

The 90-day deadline Trump set for nations to make trade deals with the US or face higher tariffs is scheduled to end on July 9, CNN reported. On April 2, Trump unveiled new “reciprocal” tariff rates for key US trading partners, with some tariffs as high as 50 per cent.

After the tariffs took effect on April 9, they led to a sell-off on Wall Street, and the bond market rebelled, prompting Trump to announce a three-month pause to give nations more time to negotiate with the US, as per the CNN report. (ANI)
