Greetings From Across The World Pour In On India’s 79th Independence Day

Greetings and heartfelt wishes poured in on Friday from India’s neighbouring nations on the occasion of its 79th Independence Day, with leaders from the Maldives and Nepal extending their congratulations and reaffirming strong bilateral ties with the country.

Former President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, took to the social media platform X to convey his wishes to the Indian leadership and its citizens, noting that India has been a “steadfast friend and neighbour” on which Maldivians can count.

“Warm greetings to H.E. President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn, H.E. PM @narendramodi, the Government, and our close friends – the people of India – on India’s Independence Day. India has always been a steadfast friend and neighbour whom Maldivians can count on at all times. May our friendship grow from strength to strength,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, Arzu Rana Deuba, also extended her greetings through a post on X, addressing External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the people of India.

She emphasised the Himnalayan Country’s deep values in the “longstanding and enduring partnership” with India, noting that India has been a “shining example of democracy” around the world.

“Extending my heartfelt congratulations to @DrSJaishankar and the people of India on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day. Nepal deeply values its longstanding and enduring partnership with India. On this Independence Day, we wish the people of India continued prosperity, unity, and harmony. May India remain a shining example of democracy, inspiring countries around the world,” she stated.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the strength of the India-US relationship and their shared commitment to a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region, while extending his warm wishes to the people of India on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day.

The US Secretary of State, in a statement, highlighted the growing strategic partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies and described the relationship between India and the US as “consequential and far-reaching,” built on shared democratic values, mutual respect, and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

“On behalf of the United States, I extend our congratulations and warm wishes to the people of India as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 15,” Rubio said in a statement released by the US Department of State on Thursday (local time).

“The historic relationship between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy is consequential and far-reaching. Our two countries are united by our shared vision for a more peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region. Our partnership spans industries, promotes innovation, pushes the boundaries of critical and emerging technologies, and extends into space. Working together, the United States and India will rise to the modern challenges of today and ensure a brighter future for both our countries,” the statement added.

Kolkata’s Mini Bangladesh Feels The Pinch

People in this subcontinent, except for a miniscule, will be pining for the food they are eating all the time at home as they make a trip abroad instead of trying the local fare. Take the case of Bangladeshis, who before prime minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave Dhaka a little over a year ago following student led upheavals, would always be in Kolkata in hundreds as tourists must eat food here cooked in the same way back home. Let this be made clear at the outset. Like Bengalis on the two sides of the border will sound differently while speaking the same language – it will be pronouncedly so if they are from Chittagong or Sylhet – the cuisines too have their distinct identity.

For the benefit of readers not familiar with the above kind of distinction, in the local lingo you have ‘Bangal’ who either live in Bangladesh or who trace their origin there and ‘Ghoti’ who hail from West Bengal. Bengalis irrespective of where they are from have rice and fish, the latter thanks to the rivers, including the Padma and the Ganga crisscrossing the land, as their staple food. But Dhaka being once the Mughal capital of Bengal Subah and a major trading centre, foreign culinary naturally left a mark in the food there. Then the Nawabs of Dhaka introduced Nawabi (a form of Mughlai) cuisine to be further embellished by Persian, Turkish and Arabic influences when East Bengal was part of Pakistan.

A chef at Kasturi restaurant in Kolkata (you have a famous Kasturi in Dhaka too which tourists, epicurean kind from here will never give a miss) says: “In selection and use of spices, in sauteing, the Bangladeshi cuisine is distinctively different from ours. While retaining the basics of East Bengali food, the Bangladeshi fare has well absorbed mostly Islamic influences. I think from the patronisation we received from Bangladeshi tourists before that country faced political upheavals last year would confirm that our food was up to their palate.”

Unarguably Kasturi has always been the first choice for food for visitors from Bangladesh. At the same time, among the other well patronised eateries are Radhuni, Aami Bangali and Dhansiri at what is lovingly described as ‘mini Bangladesh’ encasing large portions of Marquis Street, Kyd Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road and Free School Street.

In days preceding Sheikh Hasina’s escape to Delhi, the ‘mini Bangladesh,’ which besides many eateries and home food delivery outlets houses hotels, guest houses, travel agencies and foreign exchange centres was an ever-bustling centre with teeming Bangladeshis. Over the years, the Bangladeshis have become the principal patrons of shops at the century and a half old iconic New Market. A shop owner there dealing in textiles and readymade garments says while New Market has long ceased to be the preferred shopping destination for the local residents, thanks to the opening of a number of high-end malls, the loss of this patronage was largely made good by highly indulgent shopping by the Bangladeshis.

Whatever the reason for travel to Kolkata, business, medical or simply tourism, the Bangladeshis have the reputation to splurge money on buying sarees, dresses, jewellery and what have you. As it would happen, the economy of ‘mini Bangladesh’ and transactions in New Market became so largely dependent on tourists from the neighbouring country that their near total absence for a year resulting from visas being made available on a highly restrictive basis has sounded the death knell for many establishments.

Remember, all tourists from Bangladesh are not necessarily of modest means. The well-heeled ones used to check in at premier hotels, savour food and drinks at posh restaurants in the city and shop at exclusive outlets. These establishments too have taken a hit, but not to the same extent as the ones in ‘mini Bangladesh’. If you will call this an enclave, it houses over 200 hotels and guest houses and nearly 3,000 shops, all seeing their business plummet to disastrously low since July last year coinciding with the outburst of student agitation against Awami League administration policy on quotas in government jobs. The movement first surreptitiously and then openly was backed by Islamist forces. According to the UN Human Rights Commission, which collected information from various credible sources, the 2024 July-August crackdown could have claimed ‘up to 1,400’ lives.

Unfortunately, the new dispensation led by Dr Mohammad Yunus, a sworn enemy of Sheikh Hasina, in its pursuit of cordiality with China and Pakistan has soured relationship with India, leading to two-way visa restrictions. The present low-point of relationship between the two neighbours has virtually extinguished tourist arrivals from Bangladesh (in sunnier days in 2023 that country had a 22 per cent share of foreign tourist arrivals in India) causing serious collateral damage to not only to tourism infrastructure in Kolkata dedicated to Bangladeshis but also to a number of hospitals in the city. Incidentally, since the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country in 1971, its citizens have routinely travelled to Kolkata for medical care.

Over the years, the numbers of medical tourists grew to an extent that leading hospitals in the city, including Apollo, Peerless, RN Tagore Hospital and Amri opened special windows for the Bangladeshis. The preference for treatment in Kolkata has a few compelling reasons, including high class medical facilities, cost affordability and proximity. To their utter disappointment, the Bangladeshi patients are now finding it difficult to secure medical visas to travel to Kolkata. As a result, at the outpatient departments of Kolkata hospitals, visits by the Bangladeshis are down to 10 to 15 per cent of the routine flow ahead of July 2024.

The wait for medical care in Kolkata becoming longer because of political standoff between the two neighbours, the more affluent Bangladeshis are seeking relief in Singapore. While visas are now very selectively given to medical tourists from Bangladesh, the veterinary clinics in Kolkata continue to draw a blank when it comes to entertaining pet parents from the neighbouring country. The local demand for medical services has been so strong that private hospital chains are able to absorb the loss of custom from Bangladesh.

But hotels and guest houses, shops and restaurants, travel agencies and foreign exchange dealers who have always almost exclusively depended on Bangladeshi patronage are seeing their losses mounting everyday with quite a few shuttering their establishments. Absence of Bangladeshis means daily loss of business of anything between ₹3 crore and ₹5 crore in mini Bangladesh alone. The loss goes up by several notches if account is taken of purchases the Bangladeshis used to make in good times in the wholesale market of Burra bazar and several other marketing centres in Kolkata.

India, China In Talks To Resume Border Trade Through All Designated Passes: MEA

India and China have resumed talks on border trade through all designated trade points after a five-year hiatus.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that both countries are working to facilitate the resumption of trade through designated points, specifically: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

“This has been part of the India-China conversation in several of our meetings. We have remained engaged with the Chinese side to facilitate the resumption of border trade through all the designated trade points, namely Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathula Pass in Sikkim,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the weekly briefing.

These border trade points were established through bilateral agreements and have been closed since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened tensions between the two nations. The talks are part of a broader effort to normalise relations between India and China, which have been strained since the deadly border clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020.

India and China are also discussing the resumption of direct flights between the two countries. While the economic value of border trade is relatively small, its resumption would serve as a confidence-building measure to ease border tensions.

The talks coincide with increased trade friction between India and the US, with the US imposing tariffs on Indian goods.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India on August 18 to hold border talks with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

India and China have been working to improve their relationship in recent months, marked by several significant developments. High-level talks between the two countries have resumed, including meetings between Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, later this month.

China officially welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which will be held in Tianjin at the end of this month.

Addressing a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made this announcement, expressing optimism that the gathering would strengthen regional cooperation.

“China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated.

China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year, and leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO, and heads of 10 international organisations, will attend relevant events as per the Chinese Ministry spokesperson. (ANI)

550 Roads Blocked, Restoration Underway: Himachal

Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh on Thursday informed that the state has suffered extensive damage due to heavy rainfall and flooding over the past 24 hours, with over 550 roads currently blocked.

Speaking to ANI, Singh said intense rain has lashed almost every part of the state since last night and has continued through the day, severely affecting road connectivity.

“According to data received till this morning, 550 PWD roads are closed. We are making every effort to reopen them within the next two days. All our departmental officers are on the job, with machinery like Poclain and robo machines deployed across affected areas, manpower is also working on the ground, and I am in constant contact with our Executive Engineers and senior officials,” he said.

He informed that there has been major damage in Rampur’s Ganvi Area and heavy destruction occurred in Rampur’s Ganvi area on Wednesday night.

“A lot of damage has taken place; some areas are badly affected. Several bridges have been washed away, some belonging to the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board and some under PWD. We are working to replace them, installing Bailey bridges wherever necessary and restoring suspension bridges in certain areas,” Singh said.

Himachal Minister acknowledged the limited central assistance this year.

“This year, we have not received much support from the Centre, though we have sent our assessment reports. In 2023, we estimated losses of Rs 8,000 crore from floods and heavy rain, for which we received Rs 1,500 crore. My department has been allocated Rs 1,400 crore, which we are using to restore damaged roads, repair cuttings, and rebuild areas where entire embankments have collapsed,” the minister said.

The minister also urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

“I appeal to everyone to stay safe in their homes and only step out for urgent reasons. In several districts, government schools have been closed as per instructions from the state government. District Deputy Commissioners have been authorised to take such decisions based on local conditions,” he said.

He also cautioned residents living near rivers and drainage channels to stay alert.

“Most of the damage has occurred near rivers and nallahs, whether in Thunag or other parts of Mandi and in the entire state. We are also receiving more reports of bridge damage. This is a serious concern, and I appeal to people to remain vigilant. We are providing full cooperation and making every possible effort,” Singh said.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted continued rain in Himachal Pradesh over the next two days, which could slow restoration efforts. Officials said that while the target is to reopen most blocked roads within 48 hours, persistent rain may cause delays. (ANI)

Murmu On Eve Of 79th I-Day Calls On Citizens To Embrace Swadeshi

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday in her address to the nation of the eve of the country’s 79th Independence Day called on citizens to “buy and use Indian-made products” to strengthen the spirit of the Swadeshi Movement.

The President said, “The idea of Swadeshi has been inspiring our national endeavours like Make-in-India initiative and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Let us resolve to buy and use Indian products.”

The President also urged people to consciously choose local products. The President noted that the same idea of self-reliance continued to inspire modern initiatives such as the “Make-in-India” programme and the “Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.”

She emphasised that this would not only honour the legacy of the Swadeshi Movement but also empower millions of artisans across the country.

The President said that Mahatma Gandhi strengthened the spirit of Swadeshi to promote goods made through the sweat, toil, and incomparable skills of Indian artisans and craftspeople.

She noted that earlier this month on August 7, the country celebrated National Handloom Day, a tradition observed since 2015 to honour the country’s weavers and their products. The day also commemorated the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which played a vital role in India’s freedom struggle.

“Since the year 2015, we have been celebrating this day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement launched during our freedom struggle in the year 1905. The spirit of Swadeshi was strengthened by Mahatma Gandhi to promote the products made by the sweat and toil of Indian artisans and crafts-persons, and by their incomparable skills. The idea of Swadeshi has been inspiring our national endeavours like Make-in-India initiative and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Let us resolve to buy and use Indian products.

Extending her heartiest greetings to the nation, President Murmu said, “It is a matter of pride for all of us that Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated by every Indian with great enthusiasm. These are days that especially remind us of our being proud Indians.”

“Our Constitution contains four values as the four pillars upholding our democracy. They are – justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. These are our civilisational principles that we re-discovered during the Freedom Struggle. At the heart of them all, I believe, is the notion of human dignity. Every human being is equal, and everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. Everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education. Everyone should have equal opportunity. Those who had been traditionally at a disadvantage needed to be given a helping hand,” she said.

“Keeping these principles foremost in mind, we started a new journey in 1947. After the long years of foreign rule, India was in utter poverty at the time of Independence. But in the 78 years since then, we have made extraordinary progress in all fields,” President Murmu said.

The President noted that India is well on the way to becoming a “self-reliant nation” and is moving ahead with great confidence.

The President called on the citizens of the country to do what they can “to protect the environment.”

“To respond to the challenge of climate change, we must also change. We must change our habits and our world-view. We must change our relationship with our land, rivers, mountains, and with flora and fauna. With contribution from all of us, we will leave behind a planet in which life will be flourishing in natural order,” she said in her address to the nation on the eve of the 79th Independence Day.

On August 15, 2025, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Naya Bharat,” reflecting India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The grand ceremonial event at Red Fort will feature a 21-Gun Salute, cultural displays, and tributes to India’s journey towards progress and prosperity. (ANI)
