BJP Has Failed to Make Our Daughters Feel Safe: BJD

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday slammed Bharatiya Janata party government in Odisha after a 13 year old girl, who allegedly immolated herself in Odisha’s Bargarh district, succumbed to burn injuries on Monday, alleging, “administration is failing to create confidence in the system where our daughters feel safe, valued and heard”.

Highlighting disturbingly similar incidents, Patnaik noted that four girls have died in similar incidents within a month.

In the X post, Former Chief Minister wrote, “Deeply saddened, shocked and anguished to know that another girl from Gaesilat, Bargarh has died after setting herself on fire. My condolences for the young girl and prayers are with the family members in the hour of grief. May God give the family members strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

“It is deeply disturbing that there is a heartbreaking pattern in the way our girls are dousing themselves with inflammable to take away their lives. Four young girls have lost their lives in similar circumstances within a month. In each passing away of innocent lives lies a pain of a daughter of #Odisha which became so unbearable that she saw no other way out than end her life. These four deaths are not stray cases- there are many such girls who are dying in the most tragic way possible after being subjected to crime every day,” he lamented in his post.

He further criticised the BJP government: “Their desperation is not just personal tragedy. Each tragedy reflects the failure to hear their screams. The BJP administration is failing to create confidence in the system where our daughters feel safe, valued and heard. How long BJP Govt will wait to stop this heartbreaking pattern? The traumatic silence and inaction from the BJP Govt leave the daughters of #Odisha more vulnerable,” he wrote.

On Monday, a 13-year-old girl died after she allegedly immolated herself in Odisha’s Bargarh, police said.

The victim was admitted to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

“Investigation is going on, and as per law, action will be taken. 3-4 teams have been formed, and interrogation is going on… The girl has died and her postmortem is going on,” said Inspector General (Northern Range), Himanshu Lal. (ANI)

Warner Overtakes Virat, Becomes 5th-Highest Run-Getter In T20 Cricket

Australian veteran David Warner, who is still active in the T20 circuit following retirement from international cricket, overtook Indian legend Virat Kohli to become the fifth-highest run-getter in T20 cricket.

Warner achieved this feat during his side, the London Spirit’s match against Manchester Originals during the ongoing The Hundred competition in England. During the match, Warner played a big knock of 71 in 51 balls, with 12 fours and a six, striking at above 139.

However, despite his efforts, his team fell short of the 164 set by Manchester, that made this total following knocks from Phil Salt (31 in 20 balls, with four boundaries and a six), Ben McKinney (29 in 12 balls, with two fours and three sixes) and Jos Buttler (46 in 37 balls, with three fours and two sixes).

Now, in 419 T20 matches, Warner has scored 13,545 runs at an average of 36.80 and a strike rate of above 140, with eight centuries and 113 fifties, best score of 135*. This is Warner’s first-ever The Hundred season, and he is the top run-getter with 150 runs in three matches at an average of 75.00, with a strike rate of 141.50 and two half-centuries.

On the other hand, Indian icon Virat has scored 13,543 runs in 414 matches and 397 innings at an average of 41.92, a strike rate of 134.67, with nine centuries and 105 fifties, with a best score of 122*.

The top run-getter in T20s is West Indies icon Chris Gayle, who revolutionised the format with his ferocious hitting and was its first big superstar. He has played 463 matches, scoring 14,562 runs in 455 innings at an average of 36.22, a strike rate of 144.75, with 22 centuries and 88 fifties and a best score of 175*. (ANI)

International Community Condemns Israel’s Drone Strike On Al Jazeera Journalists

The international community has strongly condemned Israel’s drone strike that killed five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, including a local freelance reporter, according to Al Jazeera.

The drone attack late on Sunday hit a tent for journalists positioned outside the main gate of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, killing seven people.

Among the dead were Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed Noufal.

A sixth journalist, Mohammad al-Khaldi, a local freelance reporter, was also reported killed in the air attack. Reporters Without Borders said three more journalists were wounded in the same strike, Al Jazeera reported.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned Israel’s killing of five Al Jazeera journalists and called on US and international media workers to “stand in solidarity” with their Palestinian colleagues.

“Israel’s ongoing campaign of targeted assassinations of Palestinian journalists is a war crime, plain and simple,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

The United Nations also condemned the killing of six Al Jazeera journalists.

In a post on X, UN Human Rights said, “Gaza: We condemn the killing by Israeli military of 6 Palestinian journalists by targeting their tent, in grave breach of international humanitarian law. Israel must respect & protect all civilians, including journalists. At least 242 Palestinian journalists were killed in Gaza since 7 Oct 2023. We call for immediate, safe & unhindered access to Gaza for all journalists.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, offered condolences to “the Al Jazeera family” and called for an investigation.

“We have always been very clear in condemning all killings of journalists,” Dujarric said, as quoted by Al Jazeera. “In Gaza, and everywhere, media workers should be able to carry out their work freely and without harassment, intimidation or fear of being targeted.”

The Palestinian mission in the UN condemned the attack, accusing Israel of “deliberately assassinating” al-Sharif and Qreiqeh, describing them as among the “last remaining journalists” in Gaza.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has called on the world to hold Israel to account after the killing of the five Al Jazeera staff.

“A press badge is no shield against genocidal war criminals who fear the world witnessing their atrocities,” said Baghaei, accusing Israel of assassinating the journalists “in cold blood”, as per Al Jazeera.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani strongly criticised Israel over the killing of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, calling it a shocking violation of press freedom.

In a post on social media, he added: “May God have mercy on journalists Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, & their colleagues,” Al Jazeera quoted.

Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned “in the strongest terms” the killing of its journalists by Israeli forces. In a statement, the network said the Israeli military “admitted to their crimes” and deliberately directed the attack at the journalists’ location. It called the assassination “another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that it is “appalled” by Israel’s killing of Al Jazeera journalists.

“Israel’s pattern of labelling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom,” said the CPJ’s regional director, Sara Qudah, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Amnesty International also condemned the strike as a war crime under international law and remembered al-Sharif as a “brave and extraordinary” reporter. In 2024, al-Sharif was awarded Amnesty International Australia’s Human Rights Defender Award for his resilience and commitment to press freedom, as per Al Jazeera.

Reporters Without Borders has condemned the “acknowledged murder by the Israeli army” of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif in Gaza, saying the military admitted to targeting him. RSF said the attack echoed the 2023 killing of Al Jazeera reporter Ismail al-Ghoul, also labelled a “terrorist” by Israel.

Mike Balsamo, president of the US-based National Press Club, said the killing of journalists is “a loss felt far beyond one newsroom” and called for a “thorough and transparent” investigation.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed 269 journalists in Gaza, in the deadliest conflict ever recorded for reporters, as per Al Jazeera. (ANI)

Delhi Mayor Welcomes SC’s Order To Relocate Dogs; Maneka Gandhi Says ‘Angry Judgement’

Delhi Mayor Iqbal Singh welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to relocate stray dogs to shelters in Delhi-NCR and assured that the administration will implement the order within the next six weeks.

Speaking with ANI, Iqbal Singh said, “I welcome the Supreme Court’s order, as the people of Delhi were facing a lot of problems. We will try our best to implement this order in the next 6 weeks.”

On the other hand, animal rights activists have highlighted the ‘impracticality’ of the judgement, given the lack of animal shelters in the national capital.

Animal rights activist and BJP leader Maneka Gandhi pointed out the lack of facilities to carry out such an order. She emphasised that the government needs at least 3000 shelters and over 1.5 lakh sanitation workers to relocate the dogs.

“There is no single government-run shelter in Delhi. In how many shelters would you put 3 lakh dogs? You don’t even have one. To make those shelters, you have to spend at least Rs 15 thousand crore… You’ll have to find 3000 places for shelters in places where no one lives. How will you find these many places?… This can’t be done in two months… You’ll have to employ 1.5 lakh people to just be sanitation workers, which will again cost crores,” Maneka Gandhi told ANI.

However, the Delhi Mayor remain optimistic and assured that the government can arrange temporary or permanent shelters.

“We don’t have shelter homes, but we have 10 operational sterilisation centres. We can make temporary and permanent shelter homes. MCD and the Delhi government will ensure that no one faces problems due to stray dogs,” he said.

Maneka Gandhi said that the order is not “doable” and given “out of anger” towards dogs, suggesting a lack of sensibility.

“It is not a doable order. This is a very strange judgment given by someone who is angry. Angry judgments are never sensible. The mayor says he can do this in six weeks; let him try. There is not a single shelter where they will take the dogs?” she said.

Last night, animal rights activists, rescuers, caregivers, and dog lovers held a protest in front of the India Gate against the Supreme Court order. However, they were immediately stopped and detained by the police.

“They don’t want us to talk. These people are throwing everyone into jail. I am being detained because I do the noble work of feeding animals,” said a caregiver of dogs while being detained by the police for protesting against the SC order.

Earlier on Monday, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that all localities should be made free of stray dogs and there should not be any compromise. It also made it clear that no captured animal will be released back on the streets.

It also ordered contempt proceedings against any individual or organisation that attempts to obstruct the authorities from carrying out the capture drive. (ANI)

Cristiano Ronaldo Gets Engaged To Long-Time Girlfriend Georgina

Legendary Portugal and Al-Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo is finally engaged to his long-time girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, with the latter taking to social media to show the engagement ring.

The football legend’s partner took to social media, showing off a shiny ring with caption, “Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.”. Cristiano also appears and is tagged in the picture.

It has almost been a decade since both have been dating and have four children together.

Also, Georgina shared some pictures on Instagram, showcasing a grand arrangement as the couple hosted some close friends on the occasion of Friendship Day, which fuelled speculations of the superstar footballer’s engagement to his girlfriend.

The 40-year-old icon is aiming for a brilliant season with Al-Nassr, with an eye on the biggest prize, the Saudi Pro League title, a trophy which he has not been able to win since he arrived in the Middle East way back in 2023. The squad has been strengthened with the presence of his national team-mate Joao Felix, while Kingsley Coman is also going to join the Saudi giants, as per Goal.com.

Back in June, Cristiano renewed his contract with Al Nassr till 2027.

The superstar footballer signed with the Club in 2022 after the World Cup that year, leaving Manchester United to become a free agent. His deal was for two and a half years.

Showing no signs of ageing and decline, he led Portugal to the UEFA Nations League title earlier this month, defeating Spain in the final.

With over 930 goals scored across his career already, he is aiming for the 1,000-goal mark. (ANI)

Asim Munir Is Osama Bin Laden In A Suit, Says Ex Pentagon Official

Washington, DC [US], August 12 (ANI): A former Pentagon analyst, Michael Rubin, has delivered a scathing assessment of Pakistan’s recent nuclear rhetoric, describing the country as behaving like “a rogue state” following threatening comments made by its army chief on American soil.

The controversy centres on remarks attributed to Pakistan’s army chief General Asim Munir, who allegedly threatened that if Pakistan “goes down, it would take half the world down” with it. The comments were reportedly made during a meeting in Tampa, Florida, with US military officials.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and Middle East analyst, told ANI that Pakistan’s behaviour was “completely unacceptable” and compared the army chief’s rhetoric to statements previously made by ISIS and Osama bin Laden.

“Pakistan is raising questions in many people’s minds about whether it can fulfil the responsibilities of being a state,” Rubin said. “The Field Marshal’s rhetoric is reminiscent of what we’ve heard from the Islamic State.”

Rubin called for immediate diplomatic consequences, including stripping Pakistan of its status as a major non-NATO ally and potentially designating it as a state sponsor of terrorism. He also suggested that General Munir should be declared persona non grata and banned from receiving US visas.

The analyst expressed particular concern about the lack of immediate response from US officials present during the alleged remarks. He argued that the Pakistani army chief should have been immediately escorted from the meeting and expelled from the country.

“Within 30 minutes of when Asim Munir made those comments, he should have been ushered out, taken to Tampa International Airport, and flown out of the United States,” Rubin stated.

The former Pentagon official suggested that President Trump’s continued engagement with Pakistan might be influenced by external factors.

He noted that Trump’s approach represents a departure from the traditionally strong bipartisan support for the US-India partnership that has developed since the George W. Bush administration.

Rubin painted a broader picture of regional instability, suggesting that Pakistan’s nuclear threats could provide cover for terrorist elements to “go rogue” with nuclear weapons. He argued that Pakistan represents a fundamentally different challenge from traditional diplomatic disputes.

“Americans look at terrorism through the lens of grievance,” he explained. “They don’t understand the ideological underpinnings of many terrorists. Asim Munir is Osama bin Laden in a suit.”

Perhaps most controversially, Rubin suggested that the international community should consider allowing Pakistan to undergo what he termed a “managed decline,” potentially including recognition of breakaway regions such as Balochistan. He even raised the possibility of future military intervention to secure Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

“It’s coming near time when, in a future administration, other SEAL teams should enter Pakistan to secure its nuclear weapons because the alternative is simply too great to bear,” he said.

The interview highlighted the complex web of relationships affecting US policy in South Asia. Rubin suggested that Trump’s recent tensions with India over trade and sanctions related to Russian energy purchases were not counterproductive, noting that the US itself purchases strategic materials from Russia.

He predicted that US-India relations would likely improve once the current administration’s approach changes, describing the current tensions as a “stress test” that would ultimately strengthen the partnership.

The analyst’s comments reflect growing concerns about Pakistan’s stability and its nuclear capabilities. While his proposals for dealing with Pakistan appear to go well beyond current US policy, they highlight the challenges facing policymakers as they navigate relationships with nuclear-armed states in an increasingly volatile region. New Income Tax Bill Provides Flexibility For Refunds If Return Filed Late

The new Income Tax bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha on Monday, provides flexibility for allowing refund claims in cases where the return is not filed in due time and reduces the time period for filing TDS correction statements to two years from six years as provided in the Income Tax Act Act, 1961, government sources said.

The Income Tax (No.2) Bill, 2025, was passed without debate amid protests by opposition parties, hours after it was introduced in the House by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It incorporates almost all suggestions of Select Committee that examined the bill.

The Income Tax (No.2) Bill, 2025, which was introduced on Monday afternoon after the government on Friday last withdrew the Income Tax Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, incorporates almost all recommendations of the Select Committee, which examined the legislation.

The provisions of new Income Tax Bill will come into effect from the next fiscal.

The Government had said in the budget in July 2024 that a time-bound comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act, 1961 would be undertaken to make the Act concise, lucid, and easy to read and understand.

The new Income Tax Bill was passed without debate amid opposition protests over their demand for debate on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have witnessed continuous disruptions since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament over the opposition’s demand.

Government sources said that according to the provisions of the new Income Tax Bill, the deduction under 80M of IT Act, 1961 (Clause 148 of the IT Bill, 2025) is also available to companies who have opted for the new regime.

The deductions for commuted pension and gratuity for family members are provided under Clause 93 of the IT Bill, 2025.

The provisions of MAT (Minimum Alternate tax) and AMT (Alternate minimum tax) are separated as two sub-sections under section 206

Government sources said the provisions of AMT are applicable only to those non-corporates who have claimed deductions. LLPs who have only capital gains income are not liable for AMT if there is no claim for deduction.

The word “profession” has been added after “business” in clause 187 to enable professionals with total receipts exceeding Rs 50 crore in a year the facility of prescribed electronic modes of payment.

Flexibility has been provided for allowing refund claims in cases where the return is not filed in due time with the removal of Clause 263(1)(ix), the souces said, adding that the provisions related to carry forward and set off of losses have been re-drafted for better presentation but with the same intent.

The concept of receipt has been changed with the concept of income as was there in the Income-tax Act, 1961. The utilization of capital gains on acquisition of new capital asset shall be treated as application of income by a registered non-profit organization as was there in the Inome Tax Act, 1961.

Where application of regular income falls short of 85% of regular income on account of such income not being received or received late during the tax year, on an option exercised by the assessee, such income shall be deemed as application of income in the tax year in which such income is derived.

The government sources said provisions relating to taxation of anonymous donation has been aligned with the existing provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and exemption has been made available to mixed object registered non-profits organisation also.

Mixed object registered non-profits organization has clearly been specified, mandatory investment and deposit of deemed accumulated income of 15% of regular income in specified modes has been done away with.

“For TDS correction statements, time period for filing statements has been reduced to two years from 6 years in the Income Tax Act, 1961 ad This is expected to reduce the grievances of deductees substantially,” a source said.

The amendments of Finance Act, 2025 which were required to be incorporated and have now been made part of the new Bill.

The amendments made by Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025 have also been made part of the new Bill.

Government sources said that a number of reforms have been taken by the Government since 2014. There have been major system and process reforms. The law has also reformed over the last ten years which include Corporate tax reforms, Personal Income-tax Reforms, Reforms in taxation of Capital Gains, merging of two regimes of trust provisions etc.

They said tax administration has been made more efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly. Reforms in this regard include: annual Information System which also uses verified third-party data to pre-fill returns; central processing of returns,

The tax policy reforms include Corporate Tax reforms, Individual Tax reforms , Presumptive tax provisions for non-residents have been expanded to include cruise shipping, raw diamonds and also for those providing services and technology for electronic manufacturing.

The Government had introduced the Income Tax Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on February 13, 2025, and it was referred to the Select Committee for examination.

The Select Committee laid its report in the Lok Sabha on July 21, 2025. The new and amended bill also incorporates suggestions from stakeholders about changes that would convey the proposed legal meaning more accurately.

There were corrections in the nature of drafting, alignment of phrases, consequential changes and cross-referencing and the government decided to withdraw the Income-tax Bill, 2025 and bring the Income Tax (No. 2) Bill, 2025.

The new bill replaces the Income-tax Act, 1961, which has been subjected to numerous amendments since its passage more than sixty-four years ago. (ANI)

R Ashwin Asks CSK For Clarity On His Role In IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has asked CSK for clarity on how they intend to use him in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as per ESPNcricinfo.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has told the franchise he doesn’t mind parting ways with them if he doesn’t fit their plans.

Ashwin was picked by CSK at the mega auction 2025 for Rs 9.75 crore. He played nine fixtures for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, taking seven wickets and conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.13.

This IPL was also his costliest year as he went for 9.12 runs an over, the first time that his economy went past 8.49.

The deadline for releasing players usually depends on when the auction takes place, which hasn’t been finalised for IPL 2026 yet. Although there is a mini auction every year, the mega auction happens only once every three years.

Anytime between November and February is when it is typically held. As Ashwin jokingly stated during his interview with Sanju Samson, a player trade can occur no more than a week prior to the auction.

Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 201 scalps in 239 matches at an average of 30.94. Before rejoining CSK in 2025, he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

CSK have other calls to make as well, including captaincy, which MS Dhoni took over mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad injured himself.

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson had informed the franchise that he wants to be released ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. Samson conveyed his decision to the RR management soon after the conclusion of IPL 2025.

While the Royals held their season review meetings in June, they haven’t yet responded to Samson’s request.

Samson was among six players retained by the Royals before the previous mega auction, with a price tag of Rs 18 crore. The others were Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Sandeep Sharma and Shimron Hetmyer. (ANI)

ECI Starts Proceedings To Delist Another 476 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated proceedings to delist another 476 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) for failing to contest elections for six consecutive years.

This move is part of the ECI’s ongoing efforts to clean up the electoral system and ensure that only active and engaged parties are registered.

“As part of a comprehensive and continuous strategy of the Election Commission to clean up the electoral system, ECI has been conducting a nationwide exercise to identify and delist Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) that have failed to fulfil the essential condition of contesting even a single election for 6 years continuously, since 2019,” ECI said on Monday.

In the first round of this exercise, the ECI delisted 334 RUPPs on August 9, 2025, reducing the number of listed RUPPs from 2,854 to 2,520.

“The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated proceedings to delist another 476 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) for failing to contest elections for six consecutive years. This move is part of the ECI’s ongoing efforts to clean up the electoral system and ensure that only active and engaged parties are registered,” added ECI.

Political Parties (National/State/RUPPs) in the country are registered with the ECI under the provisions of Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act 1951. Under provisions of the Act, any association once registered as a political party, gets certain privileges and advantages such as symbol, tax exemptions amongst others.

Guidelines for registration of Political Parties mention that if the party does not contest elections continuously for 6 years, the party shall be taken off the list of registered parties.

“As part of the second round of the exercise, another 476 RUPPs have been identified, which are from different States and UTs across the country,” added ECI.

The ECI has directed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of respective states and union territories to issue show-cause notices to the identified RUPPs, giving them an opportunity to respond and participate in a hearing.

Based on the reports of the CEOs, the ECI will take a final decision regarding the delisting of these RUPPs.

The ECI’s objective behind this exercise is to maintain the integrity of the electoral system and prevent dormant parties from misusing the privileges and advantages granted to registered political parties. By delisting inactive parties, the ECI aims to promote transparency and accountability in the electoral process. (ANI)

Ibrahim Shares Update On His Maddock Films Project ‘Diler’

Actor Ibrahim Ali Khan appears to be quite busy with back-to-back projects in the pipeline. Following the recent release of ‘Sarzameen,’ Ibrahim has now begun work on his next film, titled ‘Diler.’

It is directed by Kunal Deshmukh, known for his films like ‘Jannat,’ ‘Tum Mile,’ and ‘Shiddat.’
