Vir Das Requests Delhiites To Adopt Indie Dog After SC’s Relocation Order

The Supreme Court’s order to relocate all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters has sparked debate among the public.

While some have welcomed the move, others have criticised the decision, arguing that it goes against animal welfare principles.

Amid the ongoing debate, Vir Das took to Instagram on Monday evening, urging Delhiites to consider adopting an indie dog if they can.

“If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie off the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance, and will provide you with more love, affection and gratitude than you could ever imagine. Am also asking you to wholeheartedly and generously,” he posted.

“Support your nearest animal welfare NGO. I plan on doing so, and I hope you will too. As appeals are filed in court and processes take their time, it’s important for our humanity to kick in immediately. Please do your part, big or small, it all adds up,” Vir Das requested.

He also shared a picture of two dogs that he had adopted from the streets a few years ago.

Earlier today, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that all localities should be made free of stray dogs and there should not be any compromise. It also made it clear that no captured animal will be released back on the streets.

It also ordered contempt proceedings against any individual or organisation that attempts to obstruct the authorities from carrying out the capture drive.

“If any individual or organisation comes in the way of picking stray dogs or rounding them up, we will proceed to take action against any such resistance,” said Justice Pardiwala.

The apex court also directed the states and municipal authorities to create dog shelters with sufficient staff to sterilise and immunise them.

“NCT Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, MCD, NMDC shall start picking up stray dogs from all localities, particularly from more vulnerable localities. It is for the authorities to look into and if they have to create a force, do it at the earliest. However, this should be the first and foremost exercise to make all localities free of stray dogs. There should not be any compromise in undertaking the exercise,” said the bench.

It further directed that authorities in Delhi-NCR must set up a helpline so all dog bite complaints can be registered, with the offending animal picked up within four hours of a complaint.

It also ordered all authorities to maintain a record of daily stray dogs captured and detained. The bench stated that CCTV monitoring will ensure compliance, and no dog should be released back into the street or public spaces. (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday had a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during which he reaffirmed India’s steadfast and consistent position for the peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict and support for efforts aimed at restoration of peace.

President Zelenskyy shared his views on the recent developments related to Ukraine.

According to a PMO release, the Prime Minister thanked the Ukraine President and “reaffirmed India’s steadfast and consistent position for peaceful settlement of the conflict and support for efforts aimed at earliest restoration of peace”.

PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to extend all possible support in this regard.

The leaders also reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, the release said. They agreed to remain in touch.

PM Modi said in a post on X that President Zelenskyy apprised him of his perspectives on recent developments

“Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine,” he said.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been raging since 2002.

The conversation with President Zelenskyy came days after PM Modi’s talk with President Vladimir Putin over telephone.

During their conversation on August 8, President Putin briefed PM Modi on the latest developments concerning Ukraine.

While thanking President Putin for his detailed assessment, Prime Minister reiterated India’s consistent position for peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The two leaders also reviewed progress in the bilateral agenda and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. The Prime Minister invited President Putin to India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.

PM Modi’s conversations with President Putin and President Zelenskyy have come days ahead of the summit between US President Donald Trump and the Russian President.

Walking On Hot Coals, India’s Tariff Challenge

India has come through many crises but the new Trump order levying a punishing 50% tariff on Indian goods, allegedly for buying Russian oil, may be one of the most complex challenges to India’s long pursued ‘strategic’ autonomy in international affairs. India is being asked to pick a side or suffer economic disaster from which it could take a long time to recover. Depending on Russia and China, this stress could go on for a long time.

As a regional rather than world power, India’s dexterity in balancing between different superpower camps is legendry. During the cold war, it led the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) giving immunity to many developing and underdeveloped countries from demands to join the American or Soviet camp.

India traded with USA and bought arms from the Soviet, now Russia. It relied on Russian veto at UN as well as support from Britain and USA. India’s diplomatic skills have been remarkable.

However, this time the threat to India’s is different. Donald Trump doesn’t do international politics by the book. Officially he has given India an ultimatum to stop buying cheap Russian oil, so that he can put pressure on Putin to negotiate peace in Ukraine. But the oil may just be a distraction.

There are other motives. He wants American companies to stop using India as a cheap manufacturing and IT base and bring the ‘jobs’ back to USA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shifted from Manmohan Singh’s ‘made in India’ policy to ‘make in India’ inviting multinational companies to shift productions form China to India. It started working. Trump however promised his base to pursue a policy of onshoring.

Secondly, Trump wants the BRICS to end or at least be weakened. He sees the BRICS project to develop an alternative international reserve currency as a great threat to the Dollar and American hegemony. If India comes out of BRICS, it is likely to stop BRICS expanding. Some may even walk with India.

Thirdly, he wants to encircle China, USA’s biggest competitor in influence, power and trade. India’s ‘strategic’ neutrality frustrates USA. India is member of the defence pact, ‘QUAD’ (Australia, India, Japan and United States) but also of BRICS.

There is also a personal pique that might have led to Trump targeting India. For his alleged Noble Prize bid, Trump is trying to build a portfolio as a peace negotiator. He claimed to have stopped the India-Pakistan war in June 2025. India has denied any Trump influence.

Together, this has left Indian diplomacy and its government with one of the most testing times. On the one hand is its deep relationship with Russia as a reliable source for its defence needs and now cheap oil. Russia is thought to have persuaded China to back off from border incursions.

On the other hand is India’s growing engagement with United States as a geopolitical partner, particularly against China. Indian business ties with USA are growing. Most Indians dream of migrating to USA rather than Russia or China. Indians have done well in USA. As a democracy, it is considered to be an ideologically aligned to Democracies.

ALSO READ: Can Donald Trump Stonewall BRICS?

Trump has turned the heat on India to come off the fence or what India calls ‘strategic’ autonomy in international relations. The 50% Tariff threat will affect India’s economy substantially and could even force some businesses to fail, particularly in the textiles, garments, steel, gems and some auto-components fields. India’s trade with USA is a $212 Billion partnership. The USA is its biggest export market while India’s large market only features as tenth in America’s international trade.

Trump increased his coercive approach with collateral pressure. He invited Pakistan’s Army Chief, General (now Field Marshall) Asim Munir to lunch in June. He has shown interest in developing Pakistan’s mineral resources and oil. Pakistan is India’s birth enemy.

The second bee in the bonnet for Modi’s Government is the Khalistan issue which USA seems to be tacitly acknowledging. On 24th July, President Trump sent a signed letter to Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of the Sikhs for Justice.

The carefully crafted letter makes no reference to Khalistan or alleged threats to Pannu’s life from Indian agents but it cites America’s intention to make its farmers competitive in a level playing field. This was an indication for India to reduce subsidies to its farmers and stop import tariffs on American agriculture produce. The policy will ironically affect Punjab’s Sikh farmers the most. The letter itself is a message to India, that US could support the Khalistan movement.

India’s has decided to sit it through, keep its head down, continue trade negotiations, reduce tariffs on some US imports, reduce the trade deficit and wait for Trump-Putin talks to diffuse Trump’s frustration at the grinding Russia-Ukraine war that he was supposed to end within 24 hours of taking office. Putin will have India’s predicament in mind when he meets Trump.

It is also not in China’s interest to see India’s economy faltering and India moving closer into the American orbit. BRICS is China’s counter force to American hegemony. But India too needs the BRICS to maintain ‘strategic’ autonomy.

India has one asset that Trump’s USA does not. The United States has largely interacted in the international world through might, ideological hegemony, financial strength and interventions. It is not quite used to coexistence or delicate diplomacy. It makes exceptions as ‘pragmatic’ suspension but hopes things will change in its favour one day.

India on the other hand came from a very weak hand after decolonisation. It has learnt to balance its interests with geopolitical trends but also keep a foot in most camps. It has a leading role in the Commonwealth, a powerful player at UN, a good friend of many African countries, good relations with most South East Asian countries, member of BRICS and Quad and immense respect in the Middle East where it supplies cheap labour and goods.

Modi has a lot to lose if he cowers to Trump’s demands. India’s prestige in the world will be greatly affected. Countries will see it as weak. Modi himself will start to lose the strong man image in India and the world.

At the same time many powerful Indian businesses will try and persuade Modi to compromise with Trump since many are dependent on trade with USA. However India has the financial reserve to placate them.

Trump has many cards to play, a word he likes in the game of deal making. Warnings by experts that India will go into China’s camp are unfounded.

This is going to be a long drawn issue as it is not merely about the Russian oil. India is walking on burning coals as its foreign policy competence is tested to its limits. If it comes out of this with its integrity, its influence in the world will increase. If it compromises, that influence will decrease.

Baaghi 4: Tiger Returns As Vengeful ‘Hero And Villain’

The much-awaited official teaser for Tiger Shroff’s ‘Baaghi 4’ has been unveiled. Days after teasing fans with a bloodied poster, the actor confirmed the release date on Saturday, only to add to the growing buzz.

The teaser opens on a sombre note with Tiger’s voiceover in the background. As the character recalls the tragic loss of a loved one, the teaser continues with violent visuals, actions, and a lot of drama.

Tiger Shroff makes a fierce entry as Ronny, this time taking over as both the “hero and the villain” of his story. He appears fuelled by vengeance, armed, and driven by a rage that leaves no enemy breathing.

“Har Aashiq Ek Villain Hain… No escape. No mercy. Brace yourself — a Bloody, Violent Love Story begins. #Baaghi4Teaser Out Now,” Tiger wrote in the caption.

Actor Sanjay Dutt is seen as a menacing killer antagonist, setting the stage for the “bloody and violent” story. “This is Dutt like you’ve never seen him before completely unleashed,” the makers said about his role.

The teaser also includes glimpses of the lead actresses, Sonam Bajwa and debutant Harnaaz Sandhu, who also ace the action scenes.

Earlier this March, the makers released an intense new poster of the film on Tiger’s 35th birthday. He was seen in a fierce and darker look, exuding a powerful aura. In the poster, Tiger’s face was partially visible with blood dripping from his forehead while he held a cigarette between his lips.

“This time he is not the same,” read the tagline in the poster.

Sharing the same on his Instagram handle, Tiger expressed gratitude towards the franchise that helped him become an “action hero.”

“The franchise that gave me an identity and allowed me to express my eagerness to prove myself as an action hero…is now the franchise that is changing my identity. He’s definitely not the same this time, but I hope you guys accept him the way you did 8 years ago,” the actor wrote in the post.

Tiger completed the shooting of ‘Baaghi 4’ in July this year and shared the update with his fans. With pictures of himself from the sets, he wrote, “And finally it comes to an end … thank you for all your love and allowing this franchise to reach so far. Don’t think I’ve ever bled as much for any film. This one’s for you. #4 coming soon.”

A fourth instalment in the beloved ‘Baaghi’ franchise, the film is directed by A. Harsha and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala.

‘Baaghi 4’ will be released on September 5, 2025. (ANI)

Nuclear Sabre-Rattling Is Pakistan’s Stock-In-Trade: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday issued a strong statement in response to remarks reportedly made by the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff during his visit to the United States.

“Our attention has been drawn to remarks reportedly made by the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff while on a visit to the United States. Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan’s stock-in-trade,” the MEA official spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added,”The international community can draw its own conclusions on the irresponsibility inherent in such remarks, which also reinforce the well-held doubts about the integrity of nuclear command and control in a state where the military is hand-in-glove with terrorist groups.”

The MEA spokesperson further expressed regret that these remarks were made from the soil of a friendly third country. “It is also regrettable that these remarks should have been made from the soil of a friendly third country,” the official said.

“India has already made it clear that it will not give in to nuclear blackmail and will continue to take all necessary steps to safeguard its national security, the MEA spokesperson affirmed.” the MEA statement further said.

Despite this firm stance, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has once again threatened India, warning that Islamabad would plunge the region into nuclear war and could take “almost half of the world” down if faced with an existential threat in a future conflict with New Delhi. During his ongoing visit to the United States, General Munir also stated that Islamabad will defend its water rights “at all costs” if India proceeds with dam construction on the Indus River.

Munir also repeated his anti-India rhetoric by describing Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein,” asserting that it is not India’s internal matter but an unresolved international issue, Pakistan-based media outlet ARY News reported on Monday. “We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it,” Munir told members of the Pakistani-American community in Tampa, Florida, according to a report published today in The Dawn.

At a black-tie dinner in Washington, DC, hosted by Adnan Asad, Pakistan’s honorary consul in Tampa, Munir said the Indus River “is not the Indians’ family property,” adding that Islamabad has “no shortage of resources to undo the Indian designs to stop the river,” the Dawn reported.

ARY News cited Munir as condemning “Indian aggression under Operation Sindoor,” calling it a grave violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty. He also stated, “A bilateral conflict due to any mistake by India would be a huge blunder.” Munir credited Pakistan’s response with successfully preventing a wider conflict and thanked US President Donald Trump for his role in defusing tensions between the two countries.

Ahead of the Pahalgam attack, India had strongly rebutted Pakistan Army Chief General Munir’s remarks describing Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein,” calling the claim baseless and asserting that the only relationship Pakistan has with Kashmir is to vacate the territory it occupies illegally.

Meanwhile, Munir recently visited two US cities over the weekend and flew to Brussels on Sunday after completing his second high-profile trip to the United States in less than two months. Like his previous visit, he engaged with political and military leadership in the host country, Dawn reported.

In Tampa, the Pakistan army chief attended the US Central Command (CENTCOM) change of command ceremony. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), his engagements included the retirement ceremony of General Michael E. Kurilla, Commander of CENTCOM, and the change of command where Admiral Brad Cooper assumed charge.

Dawn quoted ISPR as saying that Field Marshal Munir praised General Kurilla’s “exemplary leadership and invaluable contributions in strengthening Pakistan-US military relations” and expressed confidence that Admiral Cooper “would take this partnership forward to address shared security challenges.”

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Asim Munir met US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine and chiefs of defence from other friendly countries. He invited General Caine to visit Pakistan and reaffirmed Islamabad’s role as a key regional security stakeholder, Dawn reported. (ANI)

Student Found Dead In Nellore college; Parents Blame Management, Protests Erupt

A first-year intermediate student studying at RNR Intermediate College, located at ISKCON Centre in Nellore city of Andhra Pradesh, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Hemashree, a native of Rasapalayam village in Satyavedu mandal, Tirupati district.

The student’s parents alleged that the college management was responsible for their daughter’s death. Upon hearing the news, a large number of relatives, along with the parents of students, staged a protest in front of the college.

Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Student Wing leaders and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) members also staged protests at the college.

Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. However, until evening, the student unions and the girls’ parents continued their protest outside the college. When student union leaders attempted to enter the premises forcibly, police intervened, carried out a lathi-charge, and later took the student union leaders and the deceased girl’s mother to the police station.

Speaking to ANI, Ashrith Reddy, YSRCP Student Union District President, Nellore, said, “Today morning, a first-year student in the college of RNR inter college, a student named Hemashree, hanged herself and this management, they have not even one per cent of responsibility to tell the parents? Till 10 o’clock, they haven’t passed any kind of message regarding the suicide of that particular student and they carelessly have taken the body from here and placed the body in the premises of Enel Hospital which is nearby, half-kilometre and after placing the body, the management has vanished away from the place and till now, not even one person from the management have come here and addressed the parents or the student unions.”

“We, the student unions, representing different parties, have come here. We have been protesting since this afternoon, but nobody has come from the management, and nobody is addressing us or the parents and telling us some kind of responsible information regarding the suicide,” he added.

Reddy further added, “Student is undergoing so much pressure from the management regarding the studies and all, but the management still haven’t come here and, we YSRCP Union are protesting since this afternoon in the premises of the college and hospital also, and the college management has sent the police to control us.” (ANI)
