UK Charity Commission Says Displaying ‘Khalistan‘ in Gurdwaras Permissible

In a major U-turn, the Charity Commission of United Kingdom has withdrawn its notice to Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Slough, to remove boards displaying the word ‘Khalistan’. Since 2019 when the display of Khalistan in the main hall came to the notice of Charity Commission through an article in weekly magazine India Today, the Charity Commission has insisted that the Gurdwara remove ‘banners’ campaigning for Khalistan. The new decision follows recent submissions and expert statements.

India Today had written an article suggesting that the Gurdwara was promoting political activity and reported this to the UK Charity Commission. No British organisation or the media had raised such objection. Nevertheless, the Charity Commission took action and ordered the Gurdwara to remove the ‘banners’. However, the decision to withdraw that notice has backfired on India Today.

Several representations were made to the Charity Commission since 2019 defending the use of the words Khalistan in the main hall on the basis of human rights, right to self-determination, the concept of miri piri etc. The Charity Commission refused to budge insisting that while individuals and organisations have the right to campaign for Khalistan, it cannot be done in an institution registered as charity as that would be breach of trust.

The Gurdwara finally turned to a Barrister who solicited a report from Jasdev Singh Rai, the Director of Sikh Human Rights Group (SHRG), an organisation with UN consultative status.

The SHRG Director provided a report in which he explained that the word Khalistan was being interpreted through secular social science discourse on nationalism. He suggested that academic discourse on Khalistan is mostly from secondary sources and lacks the investigative research expected of academics or the sophisticated concepts used by other religions such as Christians. Academia on Khalistan has been restricted and influenced by its secular foundations.

Rai explained that to religious Sikhs, Khalistan means a place of perfect rule, such as Ram Rajya, Kingdom of God etc and a hope that every religious Sikh prays for. It would be a place where there would be no oppression, discrimination, prejudice, poverty, homelessness etc. It is a spiritual concept.

Rai pointed out that India Today misunderstood Jathedar Bhai Jasbir Singh’s statement in 1988 when he talked of ‘Puran Azadi’ and still continues to misunderstand the concept of Khalistan in a Gurdwara settings.

The Charity Commission accepted that there are two different interpretations of the word Khalistan. It has said that a Gurdwara registered as charity cannot display the word Khalistan if it is to mean a nation state. It cannot campaign, raise money or promote Khalistan as nation state.

However, a Gurdwara as charity is within charitable aims if it means Khalistan to mean a ‘spiritual’ place for the pure, or perfect people.

In its response, it stated: “It is clear to the Commission that ‘Khalistan’ has both an important religious meaning, such as a spiritual land of the pure, and additionally, for some, also a physical political meaning, such as the creation of a nation state on land currently part of India. While the Charity can conduct religious activities in furtherance of its objects, it cannot campaign for the creation of a nation state under charity law. As set out above, should non charities or individuals want to campaign for the creation of a nation state they can do so, but under charity law, a charity cannot.”

The barrister also pointed out that the word Khalistan is not on a banner but a board. This semantic difference has a legal cross over from a political banner to a mere display on a board.

Dhaka Disorder: A Year Later

The current India-United States spat triggered by the “Trumpian tariff terror”, his repeated claims of brokering the end of the India-Pakistan conflict and his accusing India of ‘financing’ the Ukraine conflict, may or may not slide down to Cold War era rhetoric among “strategic allies.” But it has provoked the Indian Army, not without an official nod, to recall on social media what the Nixon administration did way back in 1971.

That year, India defied Nixon and the collective disapproval of the Western and the Islamic world to win decisively, its campaign to facilitate the birth of Bangladesh. Analysts say this has rankled with the US policy makers to repeatedly side with Pakistan and, whenever it found it convenient, target Bangladesh.

That was why Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed in a military-led coup, precisely 50 years ago. No evidence, but when some of the actors spoke out, it got written about, like many other regime changes in that era.

Now, there is talk that the Biden administration may have been behind the ouster of his daughter, the longest-serving Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, a year ago. Sophisticated, without the military involvement. No evidence, again, until someone speaks up one day. And allies don’t complain. Of course, the father-daughter had made a similar set of serious mistakes at home and outside of it.

The Biden/Trump boost to the new Dhaka regime, analysts say, has more to do with the US’s long-term need to ‘contain’ China. Reports say the US has quietly unleashed plans to use Bangladesh’s southeastern border to take on the China-supported military regime in Myanmar. Foreign military boots are stomping the ground, and Washington has reportedly invested USD 400 million to create a “humanitarian corridor” to facilitate the Rohingya refugees’ return to Myanmar. The new regime in Dhaka is facilitating it.

India is placed in a piquant situation where the US, its strategic ally, and China, the strategic adversary, otherwise confronting each other in the region and globally, find their clashing interests converging in Bangladesh.

Last year’s regime change has pushed Bangladesh closer to Pakistan, but even more to the latter’s “all-weather ally” China, which is perceived as trying to encircle India in the region. The era of India benefiting from having midwifed Bangladesh’s birth seems to have ended.

China is today Bangladesh’s largest arms-giver and trading partner. Dhaka looks to them, whatever its equations with India. This zero-sum game negatively impacts India, the largest entity in the region, in its internal security and external relations.

On the ground, improving Teesta’s flow with China’s help and a plan for an air force base for Bangladesh at Lalmonirhat, both close enough for a crow to fly from India’s vulnerable “Chicken’s Neck” corridor, worries New Delhi.

Further, neither the US, nor Pakistan, nor China appear concerned about the ill-treatment of religious minorities and the surge of the Islamists, but all three concern India in its east and northeast.

Given the history of how Pakistan lost its erstwhile eastern wing, now Bangladesh, it is a zero-sum game: India loses as Pakistan and China gain. The American factor has hugely added to these complexities. All of this makes the South Asian region the playground for geopolitical games as never before.

Amidst this situation, Bangladesh is headed for elections next February. The announcement came significantly on the day that marked one year of Hasina’s ouster and exile. The “July Charter” reads like the total of what the critics think of her, ignoring the economic and social leaps, as if she did nothing good for 15 years.

Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus warned of “a certain group” ready to ‘obstruct’ the elections, “both from within the country and abroad.” These obvious hints leave little doubt that like all previous elections, India is destined to be an election issue, with a sharper edge provided by the Islamists who are ideologically opposed to anything Indian.

All this gives little hope to India – and not only because the Awami League it trusted for half a century, is banned and out of the election fray. As Dhaka demands Hasina’s repatriation for trial on multiple charges, India cannot forsake her. Things could get more volatile as her supporters, already on the run and facing violence and imprisonment, may seek to cross over.

There are a few silver linings, though. The July Charter has stopped short of including two crucial demands from the Islamists: removing the reservation in parliament for women guaranteed at present and establishing an Upper House based on proportional representation. This could have made a relatively woman-friendly Bangladesh another Afghanistan and accorded parliamentary legitimacy and clout for the Islamists.

The Islamists want the history of Bangladesh to be traced from 1947, when a divided Bengal became part of Pakistan. But the “July Charter” begins the historical trajectory from the struggle for liberation, democracy, and sovereignty, with the 1971 Independence Declaration.

The announcement of the elections may have the effect of putting on hold the reforms in the system governing Bangladesh, however good, bad or needed. The contesting parties will be busy pushing their respective political and ideological standpoints in the months to come. It is a test for a chaotic administration and for the intending voter alike to show appetite for this discourse amidst poll-related violence that is endemic to the Bangladeshi scene.

Arguably, though, Bangladesh’s trajectory begins with the 1970 election, the last in Pakistan and rated as the fairest. The one in February next year has the potential to show if the separation five decades back to safeguard Bengali culture and language was worth it.

Delhi High Court Refuses To Stay Release Of Movie Udaipur Files

The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to stay the release of the Movie Udaipur Files. Mohd Javed, an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder, had approached the court seeking a stay on the release of the movie.

This movie is set to hit theatres today.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela refused to stay the release of the movie.

Accused Mohd Javed had approached the High Court on Thursday seeking a stay on the release of the movie. He had claimed that his right to a fair trial would be affected if the movie were released.

On Wedneday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) dismissed all revision petitions challenging the certification of the controversial film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, thereby clearing the path for its public release.

This decision followed weeks of legal disputes, multiple appeals, and widespread public attention stemming from the film’s alleged communal undertones and its depiction of matters still under judicial consideration.

In its final ruling issued on August 6, 2025, the Ministry affirmed several key findings. The Revisional Authority determined that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had followed due process and committed no procedural errors in granting certification. It noted that the filmmakers had complied with the 55 cuts required by the CBFC and had also carried out additional voluntary edits.

Furthermore, the order highlighted that no new evidence or compelling arguments had been presented to warrant a reversal of the certification.

Invoking Section 6(2) of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Ministry concluded that there was no legitimate basis to suspend or alter the classification of the film. It underscored that all concerned parties had been provided a fair chance to present their views during the proceedings.

According to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Section 6 allows the government to cancel the certification of a film by the Censor Board and suspend its exhibition.

The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Delhi High Court that the Central Government has decided to withdraw its directive recommending six cuts in the film ‘Udaipur Files’. Noting the statement given by the Additional Solicitor General (ASG), the Delhi High Court disposed of two petitions seeking a stay on the release of the movie.

The film ‘Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder’ has been in headlines lately, since the Delhi High Court ordered a stay on its release on July 11. The film is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur who was brutally killed by two men in broad daylight.

Earlier, last week, the High Court had directed the Central government to hear afresh the revisions and pass an order.

The High Court has directed that you appear before the Central Government. After hearing the revisional authority dismiss the revision on Wednesday. (ANI)

Israel Intends To Take Control Of Entire Gaza, Says Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel intends to take control of the entire Gaza Strip to remove Hamas and ensure the country’s security, before handing it over to an unspecified Arab governing force, Fox News reported.

Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, ahead of a key cabinet meeting on the next stage of the Gaza war, Netanyahu stressed that Israel does not plan to retain civilian governance over the territory.

“We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza, and to pass it civilian governance,” Netanyahu said as per Fox News.

“We don’t want to keep it. We want to have a security perimeter, but we don’t want to govern it. We don’t want to be there as a governing body,” Netanyahu added.

The Israeli prime minister said a “detailed plan” would be drawn up for a post-Hamas government in Gaza, with no role for the Palestinian Authority, according to Fox News.

“We want to hand it over to Arab forces that will govern it properly, without threatening us, and giving the Gazans a good life,” he said.

Netanyahu noted that Israel currently controls about 75% of the enclave but has avoided areas where Hamas is believed to be holding hostages. He reiterated that Israel has no intent to cause civilian suffering, citing ongoing humanitarian aid efforts.

Explaining the destruction seen in Gaza, Netanyahu mentioned that Hamas booby-traps buildings, and detonating the group’s underground tunnels often brings down empty structures above them, as per Fox News.

When asked if US President Donald Trump had given Israel a “green light” to take over the Strip, Netanyahu replied, “He just says, ‘I know Israel will do what it has to do.’ We haven’t got into that kind of discussion,” while confirming that the US and Israel have discussed humanitarian aid surges and broad principles for post-Hamas Gaza, but not a detailed plan. Trump Rules Out Trade Talks With India Amid Tariff Dispute

US President Donald Trump has said there will be no trade negotiations with India until a dispute over tariffs is resolved, following his administration’s decision to double tariffs on Indian imports.

When pressed by ANI at the Oval Office, whether he expected talks to resume in light of the new 50% tariff.

“No, not until we get it resolved,” he replied.

The White House on Wednesday issued an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 percentage points in tariffs on Indian goods, raising the total levy to 50%. The administration cited national security and foreign policy concerns, pointing specifically to India’s ongoing imports of Russian oil.

The order claims that these imports, whether direct or via intermediaries, present an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States and justify emergency economic measures.

According to US officials, the initial 25% tariff came into effect on 7 August. The additional levy will take effect in 21 days and apply to all Indian goods entering US ports — with exceptions for items already in transit and certain exempt categories.

The order also provides flexibility for the president to modify the measures, depending on changing geopolitical circumstances or retaliatory actions by India or other nations.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded defiantly during a speech at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, signalling that New Delhi would not back down in the face of economic pressure.

“For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority,” PM Modi said. “India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.”

India has consistently pushed back against opening sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy to international competition, citing the potential impact on millions of rural livelihoods.

The standoff marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the two countries, as both sides dig in over economic policy and matters of national interest. (ANI)

Fresh Incident Of Firing At Kapil Sharma’s Cafe In Surrey, Canada: Reports

Shots were reportedly fired at Indian comedian and actor Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Cafe in Surrey, the second such incident reported in less than a month, according to a report by Indo-Canadian Voice.

A viral social media post, allegedly shared by gangster Goldy Dhillon and attributed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Jai Shri Ram… aaj jo Kapil Sharma ke Kap’s Cafe, Surrey mein firing hui hai, iski zimmedari Goldy Dhillon te Lawrence Bishnoi gang leti hai… next karwai jald hi Mumbai mein karenge, (Goldy Dhillon and Lawrence Bishnoi gang take responsibility for today’s firing at Kaps Cafe in Surrey, we will now do this in Mumbai next), ” the post read.

However, no independent verification of the claim has been made so far. Surrey Police authorities have not shared detail about the firing at Kaps Cafe so far. Further details are awaited.

This reported attack comes less than a month after a shooting incident at the same cafe in the second week of July, when several gunshots were fired. Police had launched an investigation into the attack, the Vancouver Sun had reported.

Several gunshots had rung outside Kap’s Cafe at 1:50 am (local time), according to Surrey Police Service. Police had said some staff members had been present inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting. No one was injured in the incident.

The cafe had opened earlier that week. At least 10 bullet holes were seen in a window at Kap’s Cafe that morning, while another window pane was shattered.

The building where the cafe is located has retail units at ground level and residential apartments above; however, it was not known how many residents live in the building. A multi-faith centre and two other yet-to-be-opened businesses occupy other ground-level units.

Officers were seen in the restaurant gathering evidence while children played across the street outside a daycare in the Newton neighbourhood, which had been cordoned off by police tape, as reported by Vancouver Sun.

Spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said police were aware of reports in Indian media claiming that a Khalistani separatist had claimed responsibility for the shooting.

In a statement, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) said the investigation was still in the very early stages and that “connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined.” Police did not have a suspect description and the motive behind the shooting had not been determined, Vancouver Sun reported.

Houghton added officers were still speaking to witnesses and working to obtain CCTV footage. He said, “Once that’s done, we’ll have a better idea of what happened.”

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call police at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. (ANI)

Brazil President Calls Up Modi; Both Agree On Better Trade, Tech Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a telephone call from Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on Thursday, with the two leaders exchanging views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest and reiterating their commitment to take the Strategic Partnership to new heights.

A PMO release said Prime Minister recalled his visit to Brazil last month during which the two leaders agreed on a framework to strengthen cooperation in trade, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, health and people-to-people ties.

Building on these discussions, they reiterated their commitment to take the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership to new heights.

“The two leaders exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest. The two leaders agreed to remain in touch,” the release said.

In his post on X on his telephone talk with the Brazilian President, PM Modi said that a strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone.

He said the two countries are committed to deepening their Strategic Partnership in trade, energy, tech, defence, and other areas.

“Had a good conversation with President Lula. Thanked him for making my visit to Brazil memorable and meaningful. We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone”, PM Modi said in a post on X.

The telephone call took place a day after US President Donald Trump hiked tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent over the country’s import of Russian oil. Brazil also faces similar tariffs from the United States.

Ministry of External Affairs had said that the United States’ move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable” and that New Delhi will take “all actions necessary to protect its national interests”.

The Brazilian President had said on Wednesday that he will not call US President Donald Trump to negotiate with him over tariffs but will invite him to the COP.

He had said he would call PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. (ANI)
