India Shouldn’t Take Trump’s Impulsive Tariff Threat: Congress’ Karti Chidambaram

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said on Wednesday that India should not take US President Donald Trump seriously when he makes impulsive statements on tariffs. Instead, the country should engage in sober and calm trade negotiations with the US, he added.

“The more he (Donald Trump) makes these impulsive statements, the less serious we should take him. We should stick to our guns and engage in sober and calm negotiations. Even if it is long-drawn, we should come to some conclusion, which is in our economic and security interest,” Karti Chidambaram told ANI.

Amid the ongoing tensions over tariffs, US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that the United States will “substantially raise” the tariff on India for buying large amounts of Russian oil. He claimed that much of this oil is being sold in the open market for huge profits.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”

Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi for being unable to stand up to President Donald Trump because of a US investigation into the Adani group.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “India, please understand: The reason PM Modi cannot stand up to President Trump despite his repeated threats is the ongoing U.S. investigation into Adani.”

“One threat is to expose the financial links between Modi, AA, and Russian oil deals. Modi’s hands are tied,” the post reads.

Meanwhile, India has defended its sovereign right to conduct energy policy based on national interest.

“You are aware of our broad approach to energy sourcing requirements, that we look at what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation. We are not aware of any specifics,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said last week, answering queries on Trump’s announcement of a penalty for purchasing Russian oil. (ANI)

The US special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow, days before the White House’s deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine or face economic penalties, Al Jazeera reported.

US President Donald Trump has warned that he would impose sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire in its conflict with Ukraine before Friday.

The White House has not outlined specific actions it plans to take, but Trump has previously threatened to impose “secondary tariffs” against Russia’s trade partners, such as India and China.

After arriving in Moscow on Wednesday, Witkoff was met by presidential special representative Kirill Dmitriev, Al Jazeera reported citing Russian state news agency TASS.

The Kremlin has not said whether Witkoff will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit.

“It is truly a must to stop the killing as soon as possible, and we fully support this. Many months could have already passed without war, had Russia not been prolonging it,” Zelenskyy said in a statement shared on X.

Earlier, Trump said that nuclear submarines have been deployed in Russia.

“They are in the region, yeah — where they have to be,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Sunday.

When asked if there was anything Russia could do to avoid sanctions at this point, Trump said, “Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.” (ANI)

Narendra Modi Inaugurates Kartavya Bhavan In Central Vista

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Kartavya Bhavan at Kartavya Path in Delhi.

PM Modi inspected the Kartavya Bhavan along with the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar.

Kartavya Bhavan-03 is part of the broader transformation of the Central Vista. It is the first among several upcoming Common Central Secretariat buildings that aim to streamline administrative processes and enable agile governance, a press release by PMO said.

The project embodies the government’s broader administrative reform agenda. By co-locating Ministries and adopting cutting-edge infrastructure, the Common Central Secretariat will improve inter-ministerial coordination, accelerate policy execution, and foster a responsive administrative ecosystem, as per the release.

Currently, many key Ministries function from ageing buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan, constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, which are now structurally outdated and inefficient. The new facilities will reduce repair and maintenance costs, boost productivity, improve employee well-being, and enhance overall service delivery.

Kartavya Bhavan-03 has been designed to foster efficiency, innovation, and collaboration by bringing together various Ministries and Departments currently scattered across Delhi. It is an office complex spanning an area of around 1.5 lakh square meters across two basements and seven levels (ground + six floors). It will house offices of the Ministries/Departments of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, DoPT, Petroleum & Natural Gas, and the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA).

According to the PMO release, the new building will exemplify modern governance infrastructure featuring IT-ready and secure workspaces, ID card-based access controls, integrated electronic surveillance, and a centralised command system. It will also lead to sustainability, targeting a GRIHA-4 rating with double-glazed facades, rooftop solar, solar water heating, advanced HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, and rainwater harvesting.

The facility will promote eco-consciousness through zero-discharge waste management, in-house solid waste processing, e-vehicle charging stations, and extensive use of recycled construction material.

As a zero-discharge campus, Kartavya Bhavan treats and reuses wastewater to meet a major chunk of its water needs. The building uses recycled construction and demolition waste in masonry and paving blocks, lightweight dry partitions to reduce topsoil use and structural load, and features an in-house solid waste management system.

The building is designed to use 30 per cent less energy. It has special glass windows to keep the building cool and reduce outside noise. Energy-saving LED lights, sensors that switch off lights when not needed, smart lifts that save power, and an advanced system to manage electricity use will all help save energy.

Solar panels on the roof of Kartavya Bhavan-03 will generate over 5.34 lakh units of electricity every year. Solar water heaters meet more than a quarter of the daily hot water needs. Charging stations for electric vehicles are also provided, as per the release.

The Prime Minister will address a public programme on Kartavya Path at around 6:30 PM, according to the official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. (ANI)

Over 70 People Rescued In Uttarakhand As Army Leads Rescue Ops

Commanding Officer of 14 Rajputana Rifles, Colonel Harshvardhan, leading the rescue operations after a mudslide in Uttarakhand’s Harsil, said that more than 70 people were rescued on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to ANI, Col Harshvardhan said that the Indian Army established crossings from Sharali to Mukhwa and Harsil and rescued 70 to 80 civilians.

“Morning, we established contact and created a crossing from Dharali to Mukhwa village and also a crossing to Harsil. Members of the civil administration and police were also moved to Harsil safely this morning. 70-80 civilians have been rescued and brought to the army camp. This is in addition to the 100 people who stayed at the camp during the night,” Col Harshvardhan said.

He said that several routes are cut off and there is no mobile network in the affected areas.

The army official said, “The situation presently is under control, the civilians are all safe at their respective locations. The people who were requiring immediate medical attention were brought to the army (camp). The area is presently cut off at multiple places, and roads and helipads have been inundated. There is no mobile connectivity in the entire region. Road connectivity is entirely blocked at a stretch of 5-6 kilometres from Harsil to Dharali.”

The Indian Army is planning to induct additional columns for rescue operations and deploy helicopters when the weather clears.

“We plan to induct some additional columns. Initially, they will be for the base because the extent of the mudslide is massive. At various stretches, the route is completely inundated, so we are creating new mountain trails to reach the affected areas. The drones have already been deployed to find missing persons. One dead body was found this morning, and it has been retrieved. Helicopter efforts will be pressed in as soon as the weather clears,” the Commanding Officer of 14 Rajputana Rifles said.

Recalling the mishap on Tuesday, the Army official said, “Immediately we moved two columns of strength 150 to Dharali village and in the next five to ten minutes we were effective there. Around 110-120 villagers were rescued to safety and evacuated to higher regions.”

He added that the army camp was also affected by a flash flood and a mudslide, but the officers managed to evacuate at least 50 labourers working in there.

“The Army camp was also struck by a flash flood and a mudslide at 330 hours. Our column got cut off from both sides, however, we pressed on with the efforts. 50-60 labourers working here were evacuated,” he said.

Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army) also said that two additional rescue and relief columns have been mobilised to Gangotri and Dharali.

Sharing an X post, ADGPI wrote, “Over 70 individuals have been rescued so far. Two additional rescue and relief columns have been mobilised to Gangotri and Dharali. Earth-moving equipment has been deployed to open road axis from Harshil to Dharali. Drones and rescue dogs are being utilised to locate stranded civilians.”

“Evacuated individuals are being provided with medical assistance and food. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on reaching every affected person. The Indian Army remains fully committed to providing all possible support and assistance to the affected population,” the X post read.

The Indian Army on Tuesday deployed 150 personnel, led by Colonel Harshvardhan, in rescue and relief operations amid a mudslide in Harsil, Uttarkashi.

Sharing an X post, Surya Command or the Central Command of the Indian Army wrote, “Col Harshvardhan, Commanding Officer of 14 RAJRIF, is personally leading 150 personnel in critical rescue and relief operations since 5 Aug 25 (AN). Inputs from the CO have been received, reassuring the citizens of the Army’s continued efforts to rescue all survivors.”

“Additional Army columns, along with Army tracker dogs, drones, logistic drones, earthmoving equipment, etc, have been moved ahead to supplement the resources at Harsil to hasten the efforts,” the X post added.

Army and Air Force helicopters are assisting in providing the essential supplies and medicines.

“Army and Air Force helicopters for essential supplies, medicines and evacuation of the marooned are also being coordinated. In the meanwhile, the residents have been moved to higher reaches in view of rising water levels due to incessant rains,” the Central Command said.

This comes after cloudburst-triggered flash floods in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday wreaked havoc, sweeping away homes, shops, and roads, with several people feared missing.

Two cloudbursts, one in Dharali and another in the Sukhi Top area, caused widespread destruction, with Dharali bearing the brunt. The region also suffered from mudslides and flash floods. (ANI)

RBI Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged At 5.5% In August Policy Meet

In a unanimous decision the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.5 per cent in its August policy meeting. The decision was announced by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Wednesday.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which met on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of August, carefully reviewed the latest economic and financial conditions before taking this decision.

The Governor said that all six members of the MPC voted unanimously to maintain the repo rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility at 5.5 per cent.

The RBI Governor stated, “After a detailed assessment of the evolving macroeconomic and financial developments and outlook, the MPC voted unanimously to keep the policy record under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility unchanged at 5.5 per cent.

This comes after the MPC had reduced the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent in the previous policy meeting held in June.

The reason for the earlier rate cut was the easing of inflation. Earlier he stated that both near-term and medium-term inflation levels are now within the RBI’s comfort zone. He also highlighted that food inflation has remained soft, which gives the central bank more flexibility in its decisions.

Retail inflation in India has continued to fall and has now reached its lowest level in more than six years. According to the Ministry of Statistics, the year-on-year inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June was 2.10 per cent (provisional), a drop of 72 basis points compared to May 2025. This is the lowest CPI inflation rate since January 2019.

Food prices have also dropped. The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for June showed a year-on-year inflation rate of (-) 1.06 per cent (Provisional). In rural areas, the food inflation rate was (-) 0.92 per cent, while in urban areas, it was (-) 1.22 per cent.

Wholesale inflation has also turned negative. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for June stood at (-) 0.13 per cent, compared to 0.39 per cent in May. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the negative WPI was due to lower prices of food items, mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum, and natural gas.

Governor Malhotra added that the economic outlook looks positive. “The monsoon season is progressing well, and the upcoming festival season usually increases economic activity. Combined with supportive government and RBI policies, this situation bodes well for the Indian economy in the near term,” he said. (ANI)

Anil Ambani Seeks 7 Days To Submit Documents Before ED In Rs 17,000-Cr Loan Fraud Case

Industrialist Anil Ambani has requested a period of seven days to furnish the necessary details and supporting documents sought by the Enforcement Directorate in the probe against him in an alleged Rs 17,000-crore loan fraud case.

The request comes amid nine hours of questioning with Anil Ambani by the investigators at the Enforcement Directorate headquarters in the case pertaining to the suspected financial irregularities and possible violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Officials in ED indicated that Anil Ambani assured full cooperation with the authorities and intended to provide all relevant information within the stipulated time.

“Today, the statement of Anil Ambani was recorded. During the examination, various questions pertaining to loan transactions were put to him. Anil Ambani sought a period of seven days to furnish the requisite details and supporting documents,” officials told ANI.

The 66-year-old businessman deposed before the investors at the agency’s headquarters here in the national capital around 11 am following a summons issued to him last week asking to join the investigation on August 5 (today). He was questioned till 8 pm.

The agency is examining the role of various entities and individuals linked to the case, and Ambani’s statement is expected to play a crucial role in the investigation.

It was the first time that the ED questioned Anil Ambani. The action was taken almost 12 days after the ED launched a massive search operation at 35 premises, 50 companies and over 25 persons linked to a money laundering case against Reliance Anil Ambani Group (RAAGA) Companies. The raids were carried out on July 24. The action followed an investigation launched by the ED under the offence of money laundering by RAAGA companies, subsequent to the recording of a First Information Report by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

As per the officials, ED’s investigation is based on information shared with the agency by other agencies and institutions such as the National Housing Bank, SEBI, National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), and Bank of Baroda.

Earlier, ED had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Anil Ambani in connection with the case.

“Preliminary investigation by ED has revealed a well-planned and thought-out scheme to divert and siphon off public money by cheating banks, shareholders, investors and other public institutions. The offence of bribing bank officials, including the promoter of Yes Banks Limited, is also under scanner,” Officials have said.

Preliminary investigation reveals illegal loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crores from Yes Bank (period 2017 to 2019).

ED then said it had found that “just before the loan was granted, the Yes Bank promoters received money in their concerns.” “ED is investigating this nexus of bribery and the loan.”

“ED has found gross violations in Yes Bank loan approvals to RAAGA companies, such as, Credit Approval Memorandums (CAMs) were back-dated, Investments were proposed without any due diligence and credit analysis in violation of Banks Credit Policy inter alia,” said the Officials.

In violation of the loan terms, the officials said, these loans were further diverted to many group companies and shell companies.

“Some red flags found by ED include- loans given to entities with weak financials, no proper documentation of loans, no due diligence, borrowers have common addresses, and common directors etc., diversion of loans to promoter group entities, ever greening of GPC loans, loans onward lent on same date, loans disbursed on same date as date of application, loans disbursed prior to sanction, Misrepresentation of financials,” the officials said earlier.

It is also informed that “Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is also learnt to have shared its findings with ED in the case of RHFL.”

“Dramatic increase in corporate loans by RHFL, from Rs 3,742.60 crore in Financial Year 2017-18 to Rs 8,670.80 crore in Financial Year 2018-19 is also under ED lens. Issues of irregular and expedited approvals, process deviations many other illegalities have been found,” added the officials.

As per officials, Reliance Communications Ltd has also committed a loan fraud of over Rs 14,000 crores.

“Bank of India (SBI) had classified Reliance Communications (RCom) and its promoter, Anil Ambani, as ‘fraudulent’ in accordance with RBI guidelines. SBI reported this classification to the RBI and is preparing to file a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” officials said.

It is also informed that “Reliance Communications Ltd has also cheated Canara Bank of more than Rs 1,050 crores.”

“Undisclosed Foreign Bank Accounts and Foreign Assets are also being investigated. Investigations are likely to reveal more,” said the officials.

It has also found that “Reliance mutual fund invested Rs 2,850 crore in AT-1 bonds of YES Bank (perpetual FDs) for suspected quid pro quo.” “These bonds were eventually written down, money siphoned off. This was the money of public, the mutual fund investors. CBI is also investigating this issue.” said the officials.

Furthermore, based on information received from SEBI, ED said it has found that Reliance Infra has diverted large sum of money disguised as ICDs to Group Companies of RAAGA through C Company, an undisclosed related party company. Reliance Infra did not disclose C Company as its related party in order to avoid proper approval from shareholder and audit committee.

“It was also hidden presumably to circumvent checks and balances imposed on related party transaction as per laws,” said the officials.

It has been found that “R Infra has taken a haircut of Rs 5,480 crore and only Rs 4 crore has been received in cash.”

“Remaining Rs 6,499 crores has been settled in the form of assignment, transfer of assets and economic rights mainly in certain discoms. These discoms have not had any business for the previous many years and are not operational. Therefore, there are zero chances of recovery of this amount. The loan diversion in this case is over Rs. 10,000 crores,” the official said.

In a statement, Reliance Infrastructure had earlier clarified reports pertaining to an over 10-year-old matter as regards the alleged diversion of Rs 10,000 crore to an undisclosed related party, when the exposure as per the disclosures in the Company’s financial statements is only around Rs 6,500 crores.

“In this connection, attention is invited that Reliance Infrastructure had publicly disclosed this matter on February 9, 2025, nearly six months ago,” Reliance Infrastructure’s statement has said.

“Reliance Infrastructure Limited had a net exposure of Rs 6,500 crore, which was duly disclosed in its financial statements for the past four years. Reliance Infrastructure diligently pursued the recovery of its dues in this matter. Through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court Judge and the mediation award filed before the Hon’ Bombay

High Court, Reliance Infrastructure arrived at a settlement to recover its 100 per cent exposure of Rs 6,500 crore.”

Further, it said, “Anil D. Ambani is not on the Board of Reliance Infrastructure since more than three years i.e. March 2022.” (ANI)
