Assam CM Shares Emotional Moment As Zubeen Garg’s Dogs Join Last Goodbye

In a deeply emotional moment, late singer Zubeen Garg’s pet dogs were brought by his family to his funeral cortege in Guwahati. The late singer was known for sharing an immense love for dogs and the sight of his canine companions bidding their silent farewell came as a poignant reminder of their special bond.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his X handle and shared the video, showing Garg’s dogs being brought in. The late singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, also carried them throughout for a final reunion.

“It is often said that dogs are a man’s best friend and if dogs love you, you are a great man- well for Iko, Diya, Rambo & Maya, Zubeen was their family and today as they bid a final farewell, they must have felt the same emotions which we are feeling now- Heartbroken,” the Chief Minister wrote in an emotional message.

On Tuesday, Zubeen Garg was cremated with full state honours in Kamarkuchi village on the outskirts of Guwahati.

The final rites were performed by Zubeen Garg’s sister Palme Borthakur. The singer’s widow, Garima Saikia, was seen in tears while paying her final tribute to ‘Goldie’, the name he was known as among friends and family.

A gun salute was given to Zubeen at the crematorium in Kamarkuchi village in Sonapur.

Hundreds of people gathered at the crematorium to bid an emotional farewell to their beloved singer.

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid floral tributes and wrote in a post on his social media, “The last time that I got to see #BelovedZubeen. From now on, he will live in Assam’s soul, mind and hearts…”

The mortal remains of the late singer were kept at the Bhogesawar Baruah Sports Complex for his fans and well-wishers to pay their tributes before his funeral.

Zubeen Garg died in Singapore after a drowning incident. His body was flown to Delhi and later transported to Assam on a commercial flight that landed in Guwahati on Sunday morning. (ANI)

SC To Irfan Solanki: Your Wife Is MLA, No Stay On Conviction

The Supreme Court on Tuesday orally observed that disqualified Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Irfan Solanki should allow his wife, Naseem Solanki, to remain MLA after she won the By-elections in November last year from UP’s Sishamau.

The top court’s remark came in response to a plea filed by Irfan Solanki, which sought to stay his conviction in an arson case that resulted in his disqualification as an MLA.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and N. Kotiswar Singh opined that when the convicted SP leaders’ wife, Naseem Solanki, has been elected as the MLA and that the elections would not be held for the next two years, for the said candidacy, then why should the wife not be allowed to continue.

“Your wife is elected. Allow that poor lady to be an MLA. There’s no election for the next two years”, Justice Surya Kant said to the counsel appearing for Irfan Solanki.

The Court opined that when Irfan’s disqualification led to his wife’s victory, then why should he use the same as a ground to seek a stay on his conviction?

During the hearing, the top court also suggested that the counsel seek the same relief before the Allahabad High Court. “We can direct the High Court to decide the case within six months”, the Court said.

The top court eventually agreed to hear Irfan Solankis’ plea and adjourned the hearing after Solankis’ counsel requested the same.

Irfan Solanki, along with four others, was convicted and sentenced by a Kanpur Nagar Sessions Court in June last year for having set ablaze a woman’s house in UP’s Jajmau.

Subsequently, on appeal, the Allahabad High Court rejected his plea to stay the said conviction but granted him bail. Therefore, Solanki has now moved the top court seeking a stay of his conviction, as it had led to his disqualification as an MLA.

In his plea, he argued that both the High Court and the Sessions Court failed to appreciate that the prosecution’s case against Solanki was based on conjectures and bald assumptions. The plea also contends that the witnesses were unreliable, being either “chance witnesses” or biased due to enmity, which undermines their credibility.

“The evidence given was under administrative pressure and political rivalry, hence they could not have been relied upon,” the plea added.

Further, the plea states that Solankis’ conviction has caused irreparable harm to him, as it has impeded him from discharging his duties as an MLA and also derails his prospects of future elections.

It added, “The conviction, if not stayed or suspended, would cause irrevocable harm and damage to an electorate of close to 2,70,000 citizens, which is a significant number in terms of Legislative Assembly elections.”

The Court has listed the matter for hearing on the next date. The date of the hearing will be mentioned on the order copy, which is yet to be uploaded on the Supreme Court website.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi will appear for Irfan Solanki. Advocate (AOR) Ankit Goel is representing the respondents, the UP government, in the matter. (ANI)

Azam Khan Thanks All After Release From Sitapur Jail

Azam Khan, the prominent Samajwadi Party leader, walked out of Sitapur jail on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after spending nearly two years behind bars.

As he emerged, Khan expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters and told ANI, “Thanks to everyone. My blessings to all who supported me.”

Azam Khan was jailed in connection with the Quality Bar land encroachment case and was released after securing bail from the Allahabad High Court in May this year.

Addressing rumours of joining the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Khan said, “This can be explained only by those who are making the speculations…I did not meet anyone in jail. I was not allowed to make a phone call…So, I have been completely out of touch for 5 years”.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav hailed Khan’s release, promising to withdraw all “false” cases against him if SP returns to power in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, SP MLA Shivpal Singh Yadav, who had come to recieve Azam Khan, attacked the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh while alleging that his colleague and former Lok Sabha MP Azam Khan was “framed” in false cases.

Addressing reporters, Yadav welcomed the court’s decision to grant bail to Azam Khan, who was lodged in Sitapur jail.

“Azam Khan was framed by the government in false cases. However, the court has granted him bail and has provided relief to him in cases. I welcome this decision. I welcome the Supreme Court and the High Court. Many false cases were filed against him. The Samajwadi Party stands beside him,” Yadav, six-time MLA of Jaswantnagar assembly constituency, said.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court on Thursday granted bail to former UP Minister Mohammad Azam Khan in the Quality Bar land case.

Speaking to ANI, Azam Khan’s advocate, Mohammad Khalid, stated that with this bail, there are no pending cases keeping him in jail, suggesting he’s likely to be released soon.

“So, there’s no pending case that would keep him in jail. As of today, bail has been granted in all the cases. This process may take two to three days. As of now, there are no other pending cases…,” said Khalid. (ANI)

EU Chief At UNGA: Rebuild Gaza, Backs Two-State Plan

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in her address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to a two-state solution while announcing new initiatives to support Palestine and rebuild Gaza.

“We will set up a Palestine Donor Group. Because any future Palestinian State must be viable also from an economic point of view. And we Europeans will set up a dedicated instrument for Gaza’s reconstruction. Gaza must be rebuilt,” von der Leyen said.

Underscoring Europe’s role in backing the Palestinian Authority, she noted, “When the night is darkest, we must hold fast to our compass, and our compass is the two-state solution. Since the beginning of this war, Europe has been the lifeline of the Palestinian Authority. But we must all do more, and this is why we will set up a Palestine donor group.”

She further stressed, “We Europeans will set up a dedicated instrument for Gaza’s reconstruction. The only realistic peace plan is based on two states, with a secure Israel, a viable Palestinian state, and the scourge of Hamas removed.”

In line with this emphasis on governance and rebuilding, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas issued a stern warning to Hamas and its factions, urging them to surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority, asserting that the state of Palestine is the sole entity eligible to govern and ensure security in Gaza.

Speaking via a video link during a special session on the two-state solution at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, Abbas outlined a vision for a unified Palestinian state governed by one law and a single legitimate security force.

“The state of Palestine is the only entity eligible to assume full responsibility for governance and security in Gaza. This comes through an interim administrative committee affiliated with the Palestinian government in the West Bank and Arab and international support and participation,” Abbas stated.

He emphasised that “Hamas will have no role in governing” and urged, “Hamas and other factions must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority. What we want is one unified state without weapons, a state with one law and one legitimate security force.”

Linking this vision to recent diplomatic moves, Abbas expressed gratitude for the New York Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in July, which he described as marking “the beginning of an irreversible path” toward ending the humanitarian crisis and Israeli occupation, in line with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The declaration, he noted, envisions an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in peace alongside Israel.

Calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, Abbas stressed the need for unhindered humanitarian access through the UN, the release of all hostages and prisoners, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. He also advocated for the urgent reconstruction of Gaza and the West Bank through the Cairo International Conference.

“The declaration stressed that the war against our people must come to an immediate and durable end. It noted that the crimes emanating from the siege, the starvation and destruction cannot be a means of achieving security. Therefore, we call for a permanent ceasefire,” he said.

“We need to ensure humanitarian access through the United Nations… We need to guarantee the release of all hostages and prisoners, with the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Gaza. We need a start without delay of Gaza and the West Bank reconstruction through the Cairo International Conference,” the president added.

Building on this, Abbas further condemned the “occupation’s crimes”, including the siege, starvation, and destruction, as well as Hamas’s actions on October 7, 2023.

“We stress our condemnation of the occupation’s crimes. We also condemn the killing and detention of civilians, including Hamas’s actions on October the 7th, 2023,” he said.

He also denounced Israeli policies, including settlement expansion, annexation, settler violence, and attacks on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

“We condemn the Israeli narrative on greater Israel, which flouts international law. It represents a direct threat to Arab national security and international peace,” he added.

France and Saudi Arabia co-chaired the special session. During the session, French President Emmanuel Macron also formally announced France’s recognition of the state of Palestine. (ANI)

Album Asha – A Song For Every Moment

None in the world has been singing for 82 years. Asha Bhosle, who recorded her first song in 1943 at age 10, is, without doubt, the world’s longest performing singer. And she declares that she is raring to drive to the studio and face the microphone and the orchestra.

She sang this 65 years ago. However, the iconic 1960 song, still hummed at farewell parties, is “….Ke dil abhi bharaa nahin”. She is not about to bid farewell. What is the hurry?

She has outlived global performers: Aretha Franklin (65 years), Tony Bennett (72 years), Dolly Parton (65 years), Umm Kalthum, Nightingale of the Arab world (50 years) and her compatriot P Susheela (70-plus years). Also, Lata Mangeshkar, her elder sister, who logged 73 years of singing before her death in 2022.

But with 12,000 songs, she has a long way to go to reach Lata Didi’s 27,000. On September 8, Asha turned 92. Will she do it?

The two have performed in scores of languages, both Indian and foreign, but mostly Hindi, Hindustani, Bengali and Marathi, their mother tongue. Lata’s language score is 36, which includes Dutch, and Asha has done so in 20.

There is no doubt, however, that their cumulative numbers as singers make them so formidable that nobody is likely to match or surpass them in a single lifetime – world of music, please take note if you haven’t.

Their musical genres include film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical and semi-classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, and Rabindra Sangeet. Arguably, nowhere else in the world has such diversity.

The global music industry, where millions are sung and billions are spent and earned, is a larger story. But the duo’s role as singers remains predominant in India, where numerous others have come, stayed to make music and gone.

It is unique because they have mostly done playback singing, where they don’t just sing, but match their voices to those performing on the screen. The composition is not only for the singers, but also for the viewer to see. The singer has to excel, guided by the composer, but also facilitate the actor to be heard. This is a point that their listeners, who transcend generations in the last century and this, are likely to miss.

Asha has aptly said that she is part of the transition from theatre to cinema. Her family travelled with father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, a renowned theatre personality, from town to town. That was the only source of entertainment till cinema came. Indeed, cinema’s advent heralded the exit of the travelling theatre across the Indian Subcontinent.

Playback singing becomes the yardstick, since singing per se is one thing, but singing to match the voice of others on the screen and the situation for which it is rendered is quite another.

For nearly a century (95 years, actually, as the Indian cinema went ‘talkie’ with Alam Ara released on March 14, 1931). In whatever language, in its vast diversity, it has stuck to song and playback singing to tell the story on the screen. It may be edited out for brevity at international film festivals, but the audience stays with it.

There are singers, and there are singers, but only India can boast of two sisters with voices to suit the young, of all ages, to leave a permanent mark on playback singing.

Although she began only a year after Lata, Asha grew under the shadow of her formidable sister and took a long time to break out, both as a sibling and a singer. Yet, she has been compared to Lata for decades now. The last word is unlikely in the debate that the discerning listeners engage in, besides singing, in terms of the number of songs, the number of films for which they have sung and the non-filmy music albums they cut, or the awards they won.

Asha began as the underdog to her sister, but more than just held her own, when scores of brothers, sisters, sons and daughters who got typecast as clones and faded out. One is only referring to her two other sisters, Usha and Meena, who chose family lives after their stints in singing.

Asha not only survived but also developed her own style. That survival was essential for a woman with a broken marriage and a single mother bringing up three children. Singer. Mother. Grandmother. Fighter. Survivor – Asha Bhosle is all that.

All along, the “Lata factor” was constant because the composers and filmmakers, if their equations with one faltered, switched to the other. Tempting to call it hegemony, as many persist, but the Mangeshkar-Bhosle factor has remained constant for the music industry.

If Lata was meticulous, even ‘divine’ (“my singing is the gift of God”, she once said), Asha is sensuous and spicy and sings for girls in their teens and twenties. She retains that rare youthful verve at an age that is nothing but advanced. It is at once earthy and come-hither, if songs she has rendered for cabaret dancers and night club singers – for a Helen or a Bindu – are anything to go by. Indeed, along with Geeta Dutt, Asha pioneered crooning for night club dancers. For A R Rahman, Asha sang Tanha tanha yahan pe jeena for Rangeela (1995) when she was 62 years old.

As for the singing style, Lata was as stoic as versatile, while Asha is not afraid to experiment. On her 92nd birthday, Asha rightly claimed: “Whenever musical boundaries were broken, I remained the common thread.”

From Naushad to O P Nayyar and S D Burman to R D Burman to A R Rahman, she has straddled generations of composers. In between, there have been Ravi, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Jaidev and many more. She was supposedly in a relationship with Nayyar, which Lata is said to have resented. And she married R D Burman.

Now, a wet blanket here. It is impossible to name even some of the great songs in this limited space. The effort here has been to depict the role of the Mangeshkars and music in Indian films.

Yet, two instances may suffice. Writing on Asha cannot be complete without a mention of her singing in Umrao Jan (1981). After over four decades, they define the zenith of the careers of not only Asha, but also Rekha for whom she crooned, for Shahryar the lyricist, for Khayyam who composed them and for Muzaffar Ali, the film’s producer-director.

As for Lata, an apt example, not in her voice though, may be a song composed by Ravi for the film Bharosa (1960), showing a love-lorn Asha Parekh. The original “Woh dil kahan se laun teri yaad jo bhulae” is available on YouTube.

But alongside is its rendering by a male voice, Charanji, at a meeting held at a different time in a different situation. The ‘peaceful’ song to mourn the passing away of a friend has many wiping their moist eyes. It is difficult to escape the genuine emotional outpouring.

Who In Their Right Mind Would Consider This Rivalry: Wassan On India-Pakistan clash

Former cricketer Atul Wassan was in sync with the views of skipper Suryakumar Yadav that the rivalry between India and Pakistan no longer exists, considering the vast chasm between the two sides, which became evident during the drubbing that the Men in Blue handed to their arch-rival during the Super Fours fixture at the ongoing Asia Cup in Dubai.

After being put in to bat on Sunday, Pakistan rode high on a couple of individual performances to post 171/5, the highest they have managed against India while batting first in T20Is. In reply, Abhishek Sharma (74) and vice-captain Shubman Gill (47) broke the backbone of Pakistan’s defence and cleared India’s way to a commanding six-wicket victory.

Once the dust settled, Suryakumar declared that the contest between India and Pakistan isn’t a rivalry anymore and told reporters, “I think you should stop asking questions on the rivalry because rivalry is when both sides play 15-20 matches, and one side is ahead by 8-7. It is called playing good cricket and a rivalry. 3-0, 10-1, I don’t know what the stat is, but this is not a rivalry anymore.”

Wassan agreed with the Indian skipper’s assessment and believes that even Pakistan players are now aware of it. According to the 57-year-old, Pakistan players should focus on their cricket instead of engaging in heated altercations with the opposition. His remarks were a direct reference to Gill and Abhishek’s war of words with Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf.

“I mean, we have said this before, and all that and who is in their right mind who would consider it as a rivalry? I mean, writing is on the wall, and the players also know that. So, I think don’t try to bring more focus on yourself by picking a fight or staring down or saying something or needling the players because on the field the results are there that you will be embarrassed. So, I think I don’t know why this hype about the everyday coverage of this match is there, because I think everybody knows that there is a huge chasm between the two teams,” Wassan told ANI.

The controversial gestures from Sahibzada Farhan and Rauf soon overshadowed India’s emphatic six-wicket success. Sahibzada Farhan pulled out a shooting gun celebration after scoring his fifty, a gesture that was labelled insensitive, considering it came in the backdrop of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, during which 26 tourists were killed on April 22.

Meanwhile, his compatriot Rauf gestured “0-6” towards the Indian spectators in response to those who teased him with chants of ‘Virat Kohli’. Farhan and Rauf’s reaction didn’t sit well with Pathan, who didn’t mince his words while lambasting them for their action.

In response to Pakistan’s action, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut lashed out at the ICC chairman Jay Shah, accusing him of allowing the match and mocking him with a sharp statement.

“Sahibzada Farhan just proved on the field how Pakistani terrorists slaughtered 26 innocents in Pahalgam–gunning them down like it was nothing. Reached his fifty and gripped the bat like an AK-47, firing boundaries! This spit in the face of BCCI & Modi govt is peak humiliation. For enabling India’s shame, Jay Shah deserves the Bharat Ratna,” Raut said on X.

Later, in another tweet, he continued to mock ICC Chief Jay Shah, “Who is responsible for this? Jai Bhai! Jai Bhai! Jai Bhai should be awarded the Bharat Ratna. For stopping the India-Pakistan war, President Trump should get the Nobel Prize, and for the insult to India’s martyrs, patriots should strongly demand Bharat Ratna for Jai Bhai!”

While reacting to Raut’s remarks, Wassan believes paying attention to Pakistan’s gestures is futile and said, “Why are you taking it seriously? You are stupid if you take their actions seriously. So, I think, don’t pay attention to them and don’t see them in this connotation.” (ANI)

Janhvi Kapoor Steps Out In Sridevi’s Saree For ‘Homebound’ Special Screening

Janhvi Kapoor surprised her fans on Monday as she attended the special screening of her upcoming film ‘Homebound’ in a stunning navy blue saree once worn by her late mother, legendary actress Sridevi.

The actress turned heads at the event, donning the same saree Sridevi wore at Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s wedding reception.

Janhvi looked elegant in the navy blue saree with golden embroidery, which she paired with a black velvet blouse. The actress completed the look with statement earrings, a choker-style necklace, and a sleek bun.

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, ‘Homebound’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars. The Film Federation of India (FFI) chose the film as the country’s contender for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.

Earlier on Monday, a press conference was held in Mumbai where Ishaan, Vishal, and Neeraj expressed their excitement over the film’s selection for the Oscars as they shared their experiences working on the project.

“This is the film I’m most proud of. Bhaut garv hai mujhe ispe… It’s an extremely important film. Neeraj bhai has made this movie with a lot of thought so that it can reach a wider audience,” Ishaan said.

Ghaywan’s ‘Homebound’ follows two childhood friends from a small North Indian village as they pursue a police job that promises them the dignity they’ve long been denied. But as they inch closer to their dream, mounting desperation threatens the bond that holds them together.

The film was previously screened at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).

It is now set to be released in Indian theatres on September 26. (ANI)

Chiranjeevi Dedicates 47 Years Of Cinematic Journey To Fans

Megastar Chiranjeevi has completed nearly five decades in the film industry, celebrating 47 years of his cinematic journey.

Taking to his X handle, Chiranjeevi penned a long, heartfelt note to express gratitude towards his fans and well-wishers.

“I, known as ‘Konidela Siva Sankara Vara Prasad,’ was introduced to you as ‘Chiranjeevi’ through the film “Pranam Khareedu,” and today marks the triumphant completion of 47 years. This film, you breathed life into me as an actor, and as your elder brother, son, family member, and megastar, you have always supported and loved me unconditionally. I will forever remain grateful to the Telugu cinema audience for this. To say that I have completed 155 films to date… the reason for this is your selfless “love,” he wrote.

He dedicated his awards and achievements to his fans and added, “They belong to all of you, bestowed upon me by you. I wish for this bond of love between us to continue forever in this way.”

Along with the post, the actor also shared the poster of his debut film, which came out in 1978.

While fans appeared the most enthusiastic, marking Chiranjeevi’s 47th anniversary in the industry, his brother, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, turned out to be the biggest cheerleader.

With a carousel of heartwarming pictures with his elder brother, Pawan Kalyan recalled that he was studying in school during the release of Chiranjeevi’s debut film.

“We went to Kanakamahal Theater, and the elation I felt that day is beyond words. In his 47-year film journey, it is truly inspiring to see how he has grown by leaps and bounds in every aspect, yet has remained humble at heart, never losing his healing and helping nature. May Durga Maa bless him with a long life filled with success, health, and prosperity. And also, we wish to continue seeing him in many more versatile roles in the years to come. For him, there is no such thing as retirement, unless he chooses it. And knowing him, he never does,” he further added.

The ‘OG’ star concluded by calling his brother a “fighter by birth.”

On the work front, Pawan Kalyan will be next seen in ‘They Call Him OG’, whereas Chiranjeevi has back-to-back projects in the pipeline, including ‘Vishwambhara’, ‘Mega 157’ and ‘Mega 158’. (ANI)

‘Statehood For Palestinians Is A Right, Not A Reward’: UN Secretary

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressing member states at the UN Headquarters in New York, reaffirmed that “statehood for Palestinians is a right, not a reward,” as the international body reiterated its support for a two-state solution to resolve the protracted Israel-Gaza conflict.

“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been unresolved for generations. Dialogue has faltered, resolutions have been flouted,” Antonio Guterres said.

He underscored the UN’s long-standing position on the two-state framework, stating, “A two-state solution where two independent sovereign democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace and security within their secure and recognised borders based on the pre-1967 1967-lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states in line with international law, UN resolution and other relevant agreements.”

He further added, “Statehood for a Palestinian is a right, not a reward, and denying statehood would be a gift to extremists everywhere. Without two states, there will be no peace in the Middle East.”

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron formally announced France’s recognition of the State of Palestine, becoming the latest Western nation to do so ahead of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The decision comes a day after Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia also announced their formal recognition of Palestine, a move widely seen as an effort to increase international pressure on Israel amid its continued military campaign in Gaza.

“The time has come. This is why, true to the historic, historic commitment of my country to the Middle East to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. This is why I declare that today, France recognises the state of Palestine,” President Macron said during a summit on the two-state solution held in New York.

President Macron, addressing the United Nations, stated that recognising a Palestinian state is the “only solution that will allow for Israel to live in peace,” describing the decision as a “defeat for Hamas,” CNN reported.

He added, “We must do everything within our power to preserve the very possibility of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.”

The French declaration follows similar announcements by Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, which declared their formal recognition of the State of Palestine on Sunday, days after the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution calling for the implementation of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

Among these nations, Canada was the first to make its announcement, followed by Australia and then the UK. The move follows through on their previous commitments by these countries to grant recognition if Tel Aviv failed to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.

More than 140 countries have already recognised Palestine. The decisions by the UK and France are seen as significant as both are members of the G7 and the UN Security Council.

On September 12, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution reviving a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, less than 24 hours after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there would never be a Palestinian state. India was among the 142 nations that voted in favour of the resolution titled ‘Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution’.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision of Canada, the UK and Australia to recognise the Palestinian State.

The Palestinian MFA considers it a protection of the two-state solution aimed at achieving peace.

“The Foreign Ministry welcomes the recognition of the State of Palestine by various countries and considers it a protection of the two-state solution aimed at achieving peace,” the statement said.

Notably, Israel’s response to the recognition of a Palestinian state by the UK, Australia, and Canada will come after he gets back from the US next week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, as per The Times of Israel.

“I have a clear message to those leaders who recognise a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre on October 7 — you are handing a huge reward to terror,” Netanyahu said in a video statement, as quoted by The Times of Israel.

“It will not happen,” he continues. “A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan.”

Netanyahu said that under his leadership, Israel “doubled Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria — and we will continue on this course.”

“The response to the recent attempt to force a terrorist state upon us in the heart of our land will be given after my return from the United States,” says Netanyahu. “Wait.”

Members of his coalition are pushing openly for Israel to annex parts of the West Bank, especially the Jordan Valley.

“Israel categorically rejects the recognition of a Palestinian state by the United Kingdom and some other countries”, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.

Statehood must remain a final status issue and not be disconnected from peace, says the ministry, adding that the Palestinian Authority has not stopped incitement, rewarding terrorists, or fighting terror adequately. “The Palestinian Authority is part of the problem and not part of the solution,” Israel said, as quoted by The Times of Israel.

“Israel will not accept any detached and imaginary text that attempts to force it to accept indefensible borders,” promises the Foreign Ministry.

“Political gestures aimed at a domestic voting audience only harm the Middle East and are not helpful. Instead, if the countries that signed this declaration truly wish to stabilise the region, they should focus on pressuring Hamas to release the hostages and to disarm immediately,” it said. (ANI)
