CJI Gavai: ‘I Respect All Religions’ Mid Vishnu Remark Row

The Chief Justice of India (CJI), BR Gavai, on Thursday responded to the social media reaction over his remarks that came while dismissing a plea seeking restoration of a 7-foot-long beheaded structure of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple in Khajuraho, MP.

CJI Gavai clarified that he respects all religions.

The comments came during the post-lunch session of the CJI-led bench at the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The Solicitor General of India (SGI), Tushar Mehta, who was also present at the court, stated that he has known the CJI for the last ten years and knows very well that the CJI visits all religious places. Mehta added that these days, things are blown out of proportion on social media.

“Newtons’ law says that every action has an equal reaction. Now every action has a disproportionate social media reaction,” Mehta said.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who was also present at the court, agreed with the aforesaid view and added that lawyers suffer every day due to such kinds of portrayals of issues on social media.

CJI Gavai, at this stage, also mentioned that even his remarks on the Nepal issue had received a similar reaction.

Justice K Vinod Chandran, who was on the bench beside CJI Gavai, also underscored the negative impact of misinformation on social media, calling it anti-social media, and shared his own experience of being misjudged online.

Senior Advocate Sanjay Nuli, who had represented the petitioner Rakesh Dalal in the Lord Vishnu matter, also clarified that the CJI never made the statement falsely attributed to him while flagging concern over misleading social media posts.”

The CJI had, during the hearing of the Lord Vishnu idol matter on Tuesday, remarked that the petitioner seeking directions to restore the idol should go and seek the remedy by praying to Lord Vishnu, as the Court declined to entertain the same.

While refusing to hear the case, the top court had opined that it’s a dispute over a temple which is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), suggesting that the ASI is an authority better equipped to intervene in this regard. (ANI)

NCB Flags Surge In Coastal Drug Smuggling; Synthetic Seizures Up 6x Since 2019

India’s Coastal states are emerging as key hotspots for the smuggling of synthetic drugs and precursor chemicals, according to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)’s Annual Report 2024.

The report highlights that trafficking networks are increasingly exploiting maritime routes through Mumbai, Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, leading to a surge in seizures and arrests over the past five years.

The report reveals that maritime routes are increasingly being used by drug cartels due to relatively weaker surveillance compared to land borders. The quantity of drugs seized in maritime smuggling cases has risen nearly 500-fold since 2019.

In 2024 alone, the report reads, maritime enforcement agencies confiscated 10,564 kilograms of narcotics, excluding nearly 9.4 million NRX tablets and 1,000 injections. This marks a dramatic escalation compared to maritime seizures before 2020.

The report indicates a significant trend that shows a nearly “sixfold increase” in the seizures of Synthetic drugs between 2019 and 2024.

Substances such as Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Mephedrone, and Methaqualone have become the most trafficked synthetic narcotics in India.

In 2024, approximately 11,994 kilograms of synthetic drugs were seized, compared to just 1,890 kilograms in 2019. Officials attribute this alarming rise to the high profitability of synthetic drugs and the growing market demand both domestically and internationally.

The report warns that synthetic narcotics have overtaken traditional drugs such as cannabis and opium in terms of profitability, with traffickers now focusing on methamphetamine and mephedrone production within India itself.

One of the most worrying trends flagged by the NCB is the discovery of multiple illicit drug manufacturing units across the country. In 2024 alone, enforcement agencies dismantled nine clandestine laboratories producing methamphetamine and mephedrone.

These labs were concentrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, the north-eastern states (including Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram), Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The seizures point to a well-organised domestic network supplying not only Indian markets but also feeding into international smuggling routes.

The NCB also recorded a steady rise in ATS seizures. In 2024, 8,406 kilograms of ATS were seized, nearly five times the 1,704 kilograms recovered in 2020.

Officials note that ATS trafficking is growing rapidly due to strong demand in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Middle Eastern markets.

As per the report, India’s vulnerability is amplified by its geographic location between two of the world’s largest narcotics-producing regions: the ‘Death Crescent’ (Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran) which remains the primary source of heroin, ATS, and hashish being smuggled into India largely through the western coast; and the ‘Death Triangle’ (Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos), the main supplier of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs, often smuggled via India’s eastern borders and maritime routes.

The report later pointed out that the traffickers frequently use major international ports like Chabahar in Iran, Gwadar, and Karachi in Pakistan as loading points for shipments bound for India.

As the NCB intensifies its crackdown, the focus is likely to remain on maritime interdiction, dismantling clandestine labs, and strengthening intelligence-sharing with global counterparts. With synthetic drugs rapidly replacing traditional narcotics as the traffickers’ commodity of choice, India’s fight against drug trafficking is entering a new and more dangerous phase. (ANI)

Malviya Accuses Rahul On Flating Flood Losses In Punjab

BJP leader Amit Malviya on Thursday slammed Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of spreading false information on the extent of animal losses and monetary damages due to recent flooding in Punjab.

In a post on social media, Malviya claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s figures are far off from official state data and accused him of exploiting Punjab’s pain for “petty politics.”

His remarks came after Gandhi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a comprehensive relief package for Punjab, stating that the state has suffered an estimated loss of at least Rs 20,000 crore, and over 10 lakh animals have perished due to floods.

Citing the Punjab government’s data, the BJP leader claimed that instead of over 10 lakh, only 34,000 animals have reportedly perished, and the state losses amount to Rs 13,289 crore and not Rs 20,000 crore.

Malviya posted on X, “Yet another pack of lies from Rahul Gandhi. In his letter to the Prime Minister, he claims 10 lakh animals have perished. But Punjab’s Animal Husbandry Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian (Sept 7) put the figure at 19,041 (including poultry), now reportedly about 34,000. Where did the missing 9.44 lakh animals go? The Punjab Chief Secretary told the PM that the state’s losses amount to ₹13,289 crores. Rahul Gandhi inflates it to ₹20,000 crores. Why this deliberate falsehood? While the Central Government is extending full support to flood-hit Punjab, Rahul Gandhi is busy reducing Punjabis to political pawns. Why exploit Punjab’s pain for petty politics?”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a comprehensive relief package for Punjab, stating that the state has suffered an estimated loss of at least Rs 20,000 crore due to floods, and the Rs 1,600 crore initial relief announced by the union government “does grave injustice” to the people of the state.

Recalling his visit to the state, Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, said he witnessed shocking devastation and its human cost. He said over four lakh acres of paddy crop have been destroyed, and over 10 lakh animals have perished.

The Congress leader said that in this hour of need of Punjab, the Centre and people of the country must reassure every farmer, every soldier, and every family in Punjab that India stands with them.

“I write to you regarding the catastrophic floods that have devastated Punjab. During my recent visit, I witnessed the shocking devastation and its human cost. Over 4 lakh acres of paddy crop have destroyed, and over 10 lakh animals have perished. Lakhs of people, mostly from marginalised communities have lost their homes. The flood has also rendered vast tracts of land uncultivable in the near future. Even today, thousands of acres are submerged and villages remain cut off,” Rahul Gandhi said in his letter written on Tuesday.

He said the efforts of the community had helped people in their hour of need.

“Despite the gravity of this crisis, I witnessed the very best of humanity. Communities rallied behind those who lost everything. People opened their homes to strangers and shared whatever little they had. Their generosity, and commitment to help, often at great personal risk was admirable,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi said the situation demands a bolder response from the Centre in terms of financial assistance.

“The 1,600 crore initial relief announced by the union government does grave injustice to the people of Punjab. Estimates suggest that the state has suffered a loss of atleast Rs 20,000 Cr. This crisis demands a bolder response. I request the government to facilitate a quick assessment of the damage and deliver a comprehensive relief package,” he said.

“Punjab will rise again. In their hour of need, we must reassure every farmer, every soldier, and every family in Punjab that India stands with them. We must come together and extend all possible support to help rebuild their future,” he added. (ANI)

‘Hope Nepali Leaders Have Picked Up Lessons From GenZ Protests’

Amir Qureshi, a businessman from Kathmandu, hopes that the new elected regime will lead the country to all-round development and prosperity. His views:

No revolution is built in a day. The same is true with the so-called GenZ revolution in Nepal. The social media ban which triggered the protests was merely a spark that lit the fire; the angst had been simmering for several months. Though it is still not clear whether it as organic protests or some organization was behind it, it is a matter of comfort that the situation has calmed down and an interim government has taken over.

Indeed, such a high degree of planned attack on constitutional institutions, courts of law, prisons, ministerial houses etc., cannot be activated in a flash. The roots of the violent protests that overthrew the government in Nepal run deeper as the unrest was brewing for the past few years with various cases of corruption surfacing out. One of the strongest reasons behind the protests is unemployment and the education system.

However, some of the incidents also brought shame to the country and the community – like assault on former ministers, torching and looting properties of the civilians, attacks on police and administrative officials, and looting of weapons and gear of the troops. Although it is clear that things were not moving in the right direction for the development of the country and its people, but the answer to mend the ways did not lie in violence.

The revolt, which organically started over visible charges of corruption, nepotism and social media ban, were hijacked by bigwigs who have larger ambitions. However, the frustration among the Gen Z was visible in heated discussions and criticism on various social media platforms. The youth of Nepal was enraged by the cases of nepotism and the extravagant lifestyle of the children of politicians.

There were also many platforms that were genuinely highlighting and exposing concerns over limited employment opportunities, economic dependence on remittances, and perceptions of inequality, which fuelled dissatisfaction among younger Nepalis.

As things are moving towards normalcy under the interim government, Nepal can only hope and pray that the new leadership will pick up lessons from the violent protests and lead the country to a path of growth and all-round development.

Many of us in Nepal are also thankful to our military which took the proceedings in its hand before it could turn more ugly and are hopeful that we will soon have new and better elected leaders who will take pride in leading our nation take us towards a better future. As for us ordinary Nepalis, political instability is not our immediate concern but it is our survival. The entire country, especially Kathmandu, depends heavily on supplies from surrounding regions and the disturbance has paralyzed everything – traffic, fear of shortages and panic-induced looting. We pray for complete normalcy to return so we can lead a peaceful life.
