Nepalese In Himachal Hope For Corruption-Free Govt Back Home

Nepalese workers, considered the backbone of development activities in Himachal Pradesh, say they are deeply concerned about the current turmoil in their homeland and are pinning hopes on the formation of a corruption-free government that will generate jobs at home and curb migration abroad.

In conversations with ANI, several Nepalese migrants working in Shimla across different trades and labour jobs voiced frustration with years of corruption and lack of development in Nepal, while also appealing to youths back home not to damage public property during protests in the future.

Gurkha Sikarmi, a native of Nepal’s remote Jumla district who has been working in Shimla for over a decade, said he has no personal fear of the unrest but stressed that Nepalese leaders have repeatedly failed their people.

“There is no fear for us. This is the people’s fight, led by students. Leaders have always looked after themselves, never the people. Prime ministers keep changing quickly, but development does not happen. The government should be good,” Sikarmi told ANI.

“We come to India for employment. I have been coming here for 10-12 years, staying a few months at home and then returning. In our remote areas, there is no road, no development. Leaders become more corrupt when they get more power. People have spread dictatorship and vandalism. We only want a government that serves the people, not themselves,” he added.

Bir Bahadur Thakur, also from Jumla, who sells shilajit and rudraksha malas in India, said corruption has hollowed Nepal.

“All the leaders ate corruption; they only looted. Work was not happening, and people finally raised their voices. Even social media like Facebook and YouTube were blocked. Leaders like KP Oli went into hiding. Ordinary people now want good, honest people in power,” Thakur said.

“There is so much unemployment in Nepal. No companies, no factories. That’s why we come to India. We only want a good government. People damaged public buildings in Kathmandu, which was wrong. Public property should not have been burnt — that is the nation’s asset, not a personal one. That has hurt us deeply,” he added.

The Nepalese workers said they see India as a lifeline, where they can find jobs in apple orchards, construction sites, and small trades. But their overwhelming hope is that their homeland stabilises.

As Thakur put it: “People are waiting for a good government. If an honest leader like Ginrendra or Balen comes, it will be good for us. This struggle is right, but vandalism was wrong. Nepal must rise again.”

Nirmal Sikarmi, from Kanika village in Jumla, who trades shilajit between Nepal and India, said that internet shutdowns and police action have worsened the situation.

“The government shut down the internet. The police beat students on the home minister’s orders, and things turned worse. Corruption is very high. My home in Jumla still lacks electricity, with only dirt roads. There is no employment. If there were jobs at home, we wouldn’t need to come here,” Nirmal told ANI.

“Leaders like Sher Bahadur Deuba, K.P. Oli and Prachanda have ruined Nepal. That is why people are angry. But burning national property like the Singha Durbar and other public offices was wrong. That is the people’s property. We don’t want our children to be uneducated like us. There must be change, there must be development,” he added.

Nirmal said he would return home for Dashain (Dussehra) but only “with chest open and courage,” adding: “The army has now said it will serve the people, not leaders. For six months, the army should run the country until a good government comes.”

Youbak Chalaune, from Nepal’s Surkhet district, told ANI that while the protests had legitimate grievances, the vandalism was unfortunate. He expressed hope from leaders like former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

“Through the internet, we saw the destruction in Nepal; it should not have happened. Public property was burnt. Now, a new government must come quickly to take control and stop further damage. All Nepalese abroad want peace,” Chalaune said.

“We want a government that creates jobs, ensures good health facilities, and stops migration abroad. Corruption must be uprooted. We do not want to leave our country for work, but until then, India provides us with employment. Nearly 40-45 lakh Nepalese find work in India,” he added.

The migrant workers reiterated their faith that Nepal would rise again — but only through honest leadership, peace, and development. (ANI)

Modi Reiterates Mizoram’s Role In Act East Policy & North East Economic Corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over ₹9000 crore in Aizawl, Mizoram, underscoring the state’s pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy and the North East Economic Corridor.

According to the official press release, the projects span across key sectors such as railways, roadways, energy, and sports, marking a significant leap in Mizoram’s development journey.

Highlighting Mizoram’s historical contributions to the nation, the Prime Minister praised the ideals and sacrifices of figures like Lalnu Ropuiliani and Pasaltha Khuangchera, stating that the values of courage, compassion, and service are deeply rooted in Mizo society. “Today, Mizoram is playing an important role in India’s development journey,” he said.

Underscoring that over the years, many states of the North East have been placed on the rail map of India for the first time, the Prime Minister highlighted that the Government of India has worked diligently to strengthen all forms of connectivity–rural roads and highways, mobile and internet connections, electricity, tap water, and LPG connections. He also announced that Mizoram will also benefit from the UDAN scheme for air travel and informed that helicopter services will commence soon in the region. This, he remarked, will significantly improve access to remote areas of Mizoram.

PM Modi emphasised that “the rail connectivity would revolutionise livelihoods in Mizoram by opening up new markets for farmers and businesses, improving access to education and healthcare, and creating employment opportunities in tourism, transport, and hospitality sectors.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the ongoing transformation of the North East region, calling it the “growth engine of India.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to boosting connectivity and infrastructure in the region, aligning with India’s Act East Policy to enhance economic and cultural ties with Southeast Asia.

“Mizoram has a major role in both the Act East Policy and the emerging North East Economic Corridor”, said the Prime Minister. He stated that with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the Sairang-Hmawngbuchhuah rail line, Mizoram would be connected to the Bay of Bengal through South East Asia. He further emphasised that this connectivity will boost trade and tourism across Northeast India and Southeast Asia.

He highlighted Mizoram’s rich tradition in sports, noting its contribution to producing many champions in football and other disciplines. He affirmed that the government’s sports policies are benefiting Mizoram as well. Under the Khelo India scheme, Modi stated that support is given for the creation of modern sports infrastructure. He informed that the government has recently introduced a National Sports Policy–Khelo India Khel Niti. He stressed that this initiative will open new doors of opportunity for the youth of Mizoram.

“India’s economy has recorded a growth of 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025-26. This means India is the fastest growing major economy in the world”, said PM Modi, stating that the country is also witnessing strong growth in Make In India and exports. (ANI)

US Calls On G7 Countries To Impose Tariffs On countries purchasing Russian Oil

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday (local time) called on G7 countries to join the US in imposing tariffs on countries purchasing Russian Oil.

According to a read out from the Treasury Department Bessent welcomes efforts to immobilize Russian assests.

“During today’s call with G7 Finance Ministers, Secretary Bessent reiterated President Trump’s call to our G7 partners that, if they are truly committed to ending the war in Ukraine, they should join the United States in imposing tariffs on countries purchasing oil from Russia. Secretary Bessent and Ambassador Greer (Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative) also welcomed commitments to increase sanctions pressure and explore using immobilized Russian sovereign assets to further benefit Ukraine’s defence,” the statement said

“Only with a unified effort that cuts off the revenues funding Putin’s war machine at the source will we be able to apply sufficient economic pressure to end the senseless killing,” said Secretary Bessent and Ambassador Greer.

“Thanks to President Trump’s bold leadership, the United States has already taken dramatic action against the purchasers of Russian oil. We are encouraged by the assurances of our fellow G7 nations that they are committed to ending this war, and we are hopeful that they will join us in taking decisive action at this critical time,” the statement further read.

The United States has levied an additional 25% tariff on India on the grounds that it was continuing to purchase Russian Oil. This was in addition to the 25% tariff previously announced by US President Trump.

Earlier on September 2, Bessent had expressed confidence that India and the US will resolve trade friction between them, as he believed that New Delhi’s values are much closer to Washington than to China and Russia.

In an interview with Fox Business, Scott Bessent said. “I think at the end of the day, India is the most populous democracy in the world. Their values are much closer to ours and to China’s than to Russia’s.”

“I think at the end of the day, two great countries will get this solved. But the Indians have not been great actors in terms of buying Russian oil and then reselling it, financing the Russian war effort in Ukraine,” he told Fox Business.

This statement was later echoed by President Trump on September 10. In a post on Truth Social Trump welcomed continued engagement with India on trade.

“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!” Trump had posted.

The positive approach was also welcomed by PM Narendra Modi who said that India and the US are working on closing the trade deal soon.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” PM Modi wrote on X.

However, the contradictions within the American administration once again came to the fore when on Friday, President Trump told Fox News that he was ‘losing out fast’ on patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that the US would have to do something strong very fast. (ANI)

Nepal’s Parliament Dissolved, Elections In March 2026 After Sushila Karki Sworn In As interim PM

Nepal’s Parliament was formally dissolved late Friday and fresh elections were scheduled for March 5, 2026, hours after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the country’s new interim Prime Minister.

Announcing the decision, the President’s Office said the dissolution was approved in the first cabinet meeting convened by Karki at 11 pm, marking the start of a six-month transitional government tasked with steering the country to the polls.

“Honourable President Shri Ram Chandra Poudel, as per the recommendation of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Sushila Karki, has dissolved the current House of Representatives with effect from 11:00 PM on Friday, Bhadra 27, 2082 BS. The date for the election of the new House of Representatives has been fixed as Thursday, Falgun 21, 2082 BS (i.e. 5 March 2026)”, the statment from the President’s office read.

Karki, who took oath earlier in the day at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu, became the first woman to hold the post of Prime Minister in Nepal. Her appointment followed the resignation of KP Sharma Oli earlier this week after weeks of youth-led anti-corruption protests that demanded political accountability.

The President’s Office said the new cabinet has been mandated to restore order and prepare the ground for elections to the Federal Parliament on March 5 next year.

Soon after her oath ceremony, the Ministry of External Affairs of India also issued a statement, welcoming the formation of the interim governmnet in Nepal, expressing hope that the move would “help foster peace and stability” in the Himalayan nation. In its response, the MEA said India “will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.”

“We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability. As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the MEA statement read.

Karki’s selection marks a rare moment of consensus in Nepali politics. Chosen through a public vote held by Gen Z leaders on the online platform Discord, she emerged as the most popular and acceptable figure, not only among the youth movement but also among traditional political forces seeking stability and credibility in a time of upheaval, as per The Kathmandu Post. Karki aims to restore order, hold elections, and ensure Nepal’s development. She’s acceptable to both youngsters and traditional political forces, praised for judicial independence. (ANI)

Nepal Gets First Woman PM As Sushila Karki Takes Oath Of Office

Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former chief justice, on Friday took oath as the country’s interim Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the top position in the Himalayan nation.

The oath of office was administered by President Ramchandra Paudel at a formal ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu.

Karki’s appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down earlier this week after mounting pressure from a nationwide movement spearheaded by Gen Z activists. The movement, driven by frustration over political corruption and a stagnant governance system, had demanded a neutral figure to guide the country through a transitional phase.

Born on June 7, 1952, in Shankarpur, Biratnagar, Karki’s journey to national leadership has been built on decades of legal experience and an unwavering reputation for integrity. After completing her early education in Biratnagar, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Banaras Hindu University in India, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from Tribhuvan University in 1978.

She began practising law in 1979, and over the years built a respected legal career serving as president of both the Koshi Zonal Bar Association and the Biratnagar Appellate Bar, before being appointed a Supreme Court justice in 2009. In July 2016, she became Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, known for issuing strong verdicts in high-profile corruption cases.

Though she was nominated to the top court under the Nepali Congress quota, those who have worked closely with her stress that she always maintained judicial independence and never bowed to political pressure. In fact, her tenure ended in June 2017 after a controversial impeachment motion widely viewed as a political attempt to stop her verdict on the police chief appointment was filed against her by the then Sher Bahadur Deuba-led coalition.

Those who have worked with her describe Karki as courageous and possessing the highest level of integrity. She is also known for her Spartan way of life, they say. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, former Supreme Court justice, says Karki and her husband have made significant contributions to the country’s democratic movement, according to The Kathmandu Post.

They are true Gandhians, not just in ideology but also in lifestyle. “She has agreed to shoulder such a huge challenge, demonstrating her courage. We all need to support her,” said Bhattarai, a former Supreme Court justice who worked with her. “I am fully hopeful that she will lead through the transition period, embracing democratic principles at the highest level.”

She has remained very vocal against corruption. During her tenure, her bench issued landmark verdicts in corruption cases against politicians. Though she entered the top court through the Nepali Congress quota, she never compromised her integrity, according to those who know her work.

She is married to Durga Subedi, a Congress leader, who was involved in a plane hijacking in 1973 to fund the anti-Panchayat movement.

“She has always maintained a high level of integrity in her entire life,” said senior advocate Bipin Adhikari, professor at Kathmandu University School of Law. He said in these challenging times, she needs a sound team to lead the government. She needs to have good people around to ensure she leads the government successfully, he said.

Some argue that it might be difficult for her to move hand in hand with the way the new generation wants. However, Bhattarai thinks that should not be a problem.

“Gen Z found a true guardian in her. They have made the best choice,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairperson of the National Assembly issued a joint statement on Friday in the wake of the ongoing political crisis in Nepal.

The statement said, “We are shocked by the loss of life and property during the Gen-Z protests that took place on this very date, Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 (September 8 and 9, 2025). We express our heartfelt condolences to all the youth who lost their lives during the protests and to the police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured during the protests and urge the relevant state mechanisms to ensure that there is no shortage of treatment.”

It further stated, “The arson and vandalism that occurred on Bhadra 24, 2082, including the Federal Parliament Building in Baneshwor, the Federal Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar, and various government offices, government and private residences, media houses, commercial establishments, public property and historical documents, has caused irreparable damage to the country. The arson that occurred at the Federal Parliament Building and Secretariat and throughout the country has caused irreparable damage to the country.” (ANI)
