Tamil Nadu: Death Toll In Karur Stampede Climbs To 41

The death toll from the stampede at Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam leader Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur has risen to 41, after a woman undergoing treatment at a hospital succumbed to her injuries.

Suguna, 65, a resident of Karur district who had been on ventilator support in the intensive care unit, passed away after failing to respond to treatment.

Among the deceased are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys, bringing the total to 41. So far, 34 victims are from the Karur district, two each from the Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, and 1 from the Salem district.

The massive crowd at Vijay’s rally on Saturday evening reportedly turned chaotic, triggering panic.

Several attendees fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Sources had said that overcrowding at the venue led to the tragedy.

A day earlier, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay announced that he will provide financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh to the injured in the unfortunate stampede that took place in Tamil Nadu’s Karur during his rally.

In an emotional post penned down on X, the TVK chief said that he was at a “loss for words” to express the pain his heart endured, further stating the faces of the deceased kept flashing through his mind.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced that the families of the 39 people who died in the Karur stampede would receive two lakh rupees each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

PM Modi also announced an amount of Rs 50,000 each for the people injured in the tragic incident.

Sharing an X post, PMO said, “PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the unfortunate incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for each person undergoing treatment. (ANI)

Ousted Nepalese PM Oli Says He Won’t Flee Amid Political Turmoil

Former Prime Minister of Nepal and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has dismissed rumours that he plans to flee the country, accusing the current government of trying to strip him of his security and official privileges, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Speaking at a gathering of the party’s youth wing, Yuwa Sangh Nepal, in Gundu, Bhaktapur, Oli made it clear he intends to stay and fight politically. “Do you think we will flee by handing over the nation to this groundless government?” he asked supporters.

Oli said he was determined to “restore peace, good governance and constitutional order.”

Oli recently vacated the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on September 9 after weeks of Gen Z-led protests culminated in the fall of his government. Since then, he has relocated to a rented home in Gundu after his personal residence in Balkot was set on fire by demonstrators, as per Dhaka Tribune.

He accused the Sushila Karki-led administration of lacking legitimacy, claiming it rose to power not through the will of the people but through “vandalism and arson.”

Oli also challenged the government to make public any communications he had with state officials during the protests. “Publish them with courage. Make public the instructions I gave,” he said, suggesting he had nothing to hide.

He expressed concern over threats of fresh attacks and criticised the government for failing to ensure his security. “On social media, there are open calls to attack my residence. What is the government doing? Just watching?” he asked.

Oli also objected to reports that the government has decided to withhold passports of several leaders, including himself, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Arzu Rana Deuba, Ramesh Lekhak, and Deepak Khadka.

The former prime minister accused the Karki government of “throwing the country into insecurity” by targeting political opponents, according to Dhaka Tribune.

Oli’s government was toppled on the second day of the Gen Z protest. Rights groups have held him and then-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak responsible for excessive force that left dozens dead during the unrest.

A monitoring report by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday said the government’s failure to anticipate the intensity of the protests and declining morale of security forces contributed to heavy casualties and damage. It noted that while the first day of protests on September 8 remained peaceful, police shootings triggered widespread violence the following day. (ANI)

‘In The End, Intent Always Wins!’: Head Coach Gambhir Posts After India Wins Asia Cup

Head coach Gautam Gambhir had a simple message filled with “intent” after India’s five-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. After India became the Asian champions, Gambhir sent a clear message, writing on Instagram, “In the end, INTENT always wins!”

Unlike their previous two encounters, India had to put in a lot of effort to clinch the title for the ninth time in the tournament’s history. While pursuing a 147-run target, India were jolted early with the top-order perishing inside the powerplay, leaving the Suryakumar Yadav-led side threadbare at 20/3 in 4 overs.

Tilak Varma steadied the world champions’ sinking ship and injected the much-needed impetus to drive India past the finishing line. Sanju Samson (24 off 21) and Shivam Dube (33 off 22) chipped in with valuable contributions to ensure India gunned down the target in the final over and clinched the title on an unbeaten note.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah extended his heartfelt wishes to skipper Suryakumar Yadav and his team and wrote on X, “Congratulations to #TeamIndia on lifting the Asia Cup 2025! A proud moment for Indian cricket as Team India showcases excellence, consistency, and character on the biggest stage. Kudos to the players and support staff for a stellar campaign.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla was impressed by Tilak’s stellar display and wrote on X, “The undefeated champions of ASIA. Congratulations, Team India, on a dominating win and 3-0 against Pak. Marvellous display by Tilak Verma and @imkuldeep18. A great show under pressure.”

Former BCCI President and captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his delight and wrote on X, “Well done India on a great nite ..under pressure a much better team with the ball and then with the bat .. These young boys are brilliant.” (ANI)

Asia Cup Final: Tilak Shines As India Beat Pak In A Thriller

A well-compiled half-century by Tilak Varma and his useful partnerships with Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube helped Team India secure their second T20I Asia Cup title and overall ninth title, including the ODI editions, beating Pakistan by five wickets in a nail-biting final at Dubai on Sunday.

Suryakumar-led Team India continues its rampaging run in T20Is, having won 18 T20Is and dropped just two and tied two ever since it first wore the captaincy armband. Kuldeep Yadav (4/30) sent Pakistan into a shocking collapse, from 113/1 to 146 all out, despite a fine 84-run opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan (57 in 38 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and Fakhar Zaman (46 in 35 balls, with two fours and two sixes). In the chase, India collapsed to 20/3 with an initial burst from Faheem Ashraf (3/29), but Tilak (69* in 53 balls, with three fours and four sixes) strung partnerships with Sanju Samson (24 in 21 balls, with two fours and a six) and Shivam Dube (33 in 22 balls, with two fours and two sixes).

During the run-chase of 147 runs, India had a start to forget as Abhishek Sharma’s breakout tournament ended with a whimper, with Haris Rauf catching him at mid-on, giving Faheem Ashraf the first wicket. Abhishek was gone for five-ball five. India was 7/1 in 1.1 overs.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav’s poor tournament and 2025 in T20Is continued, as he succumbed to Shaheen Shah Afridi for just one run off five balls, while a poorly-timed shot from vice-captain Shubman Gill landed into Rauf’s hands at mid-on, removing him for 12 in 10 balls. India was in deep trouble at 20/3 in 4 overs, perhaps staring at repeating the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final.

Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson got some quick runs for India in the next two overs, with Tilak taking down Faheem with a four and six, ending the powerplay with 36 runs on the board.

A couple more boundaries followed, and India reached the 50-run mark in 8.1 overs, with a single by Samson.

At the end of 10 overs, India was 58/3, with Samson (16) and Tilak (24) unbeaten. Within the next two overs, Tilak and Samson collected sixes against spinners, easing the pressure. But an outside edge by Samson landed in the hands of Sahibzada Farhan at the backward point. The 57-run stand was undone, with Samson back in the hut for 21-ball 24, with two fours and a six. India was 77/4 in 12.2 overs.

Spinners had done a fine job for Pakistan to squeeze India till 14th over, only letting them add 24 runs in addition to their total after 10th over and conceding just one six. The 15th over by Haris Rauf did help India’s cause a bit as both Tilak and Shivam Dube launched a counter, with Shivam first firing a boundary and Tilak following it with a four and six. India was 100/4 after 15 overs, with 47 runs needed in the final five overs. Rauf conceded 17 runs in his over.

The 16th over by Abrar also started on poor note for Pakistan, as Shivam dispatched him for a biggie over deep mid-wicket and it was followed by a wide. 11 runs came from this over, with Tilak delivering a clutch fifty in 41 balls, with three fours and three sixes.

Shaheen’s next over generated just six runs, leaving India with 30 to get in the final three overs. Haris kept bowling well to restrain India from boundaries, however, the final ball of the over was a full toss, which Dube sent for a huge six, leaving India to get 17 in 12 balls.

Faheem’s next over started with three singles, but Dube pierced the fourth delivery for a four. However, the final ball saw him for go for a straight six and get caught by Shaheen for 33 in 22 balls, with two fours and two sixes. India needed 10 runs in the final over.

Rauf’s final over started with the Tilak running two with Rinku Singh, and following it with a six, leaving India with two runs to get in the final four balls. Scores were level, and Rinku got the chance to finish it off with a four. India ended their run-chase at 150/5 in 19.4 overs, with Tilak (69* in 53 balls, with three fours and four sixes) and Rinku Singh (4*) unbeaten.

Faheem Ashraf (3/29) was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, while Shaheen Shah Afridi and Abrar Ahmed with a wicket also registered their names on the scorecard.

Earlier, India’s star Kuldeep Yadav’s spin magic restricts Pakistan to 146 in the final of the ongoing T20 Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday.

India made a superb comeback with the ball in the second half of the match. After being 113-2 in 12 overs, Pakistan were bowled out for just 33 runs.

India were without star all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the Asia Cup 2025 final. Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha once again avoided the handshake at the toss. Yadav also did not attend the trophy photoshoot with the Pakistan captain before the toss.

After winning the toss, India opted to bowl. Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman opened the innings. Shivam Dube took the new ball and conceded only a four in the first over.

Farhan swung and missed mostly in Bumrah’s first over. Four singles and a four in the third over of the innings off Dube. Pakistan reached 19 from the first three overs.

Bumrah was taken for a four and a sixer by Farhan in the fourth over. Varun Chakaravarthy concedes only five runs in his first over. Axar Patel bowled the last over of the power play and gave away eight runs. Pakistan steadily reached 45 after the conclusion of the power-play.

Pakistan brought up their fifty in the 7th over as Kuldeep Yadav went for 11 in his first over. Farhan continued to chip away at the boundaries. Farhan brought back-to-back fifties against India. This came in 35 balls.

Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy gave India the first breakthrough as Sahibzada Farhan departed after slamming a half-century. Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub were at the crease. Pakistan reached 107/1 in 12 overs against India in the final.

Yadav, in the following over, got Saim Ayub for 14. The fall of a wicket continued for Pakistan as Mohammad Haris was removed for a duck from Axar Patel in the 14th over.

Chakaravarthy, after being hit for a six from Fakhar, removed him on the very next ball for 46 in the 15th over. Axar, in his last over, got the second wicket in the fixture, removing Hussain Talat for just one.

Salman Agha’s run drought continued as Yadav removed him for eight runs off seven balls. Yadav, in the same over, removed Shaheen Afridi and Faheem Ashraf for a duck, finishing his spell on 4/30.

Indian spinners, including Chakaravarthy, Patel, and Yadav, spun a web around Pakistan.

Bumrah bashed Haris Rauf’s off-stump with a yorker to remove him for six, and he did an ‘Airplane crash’ celebration in response to the pacer’s controversial and provocative gestures during the Super Four clash. He also got the final scalp of Mohmmed Nawaz, bundling out Pakistan for just 146 runs.

Brief Scores: Pakistan: 146/10 in 19.1 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 57, Fakhar Zaman 46, Kuldeep Yadav 4/30) vs India: 150/5 (Tilak Varma: 69*, Shivam Dube 33, Faheem Ashraf 3/29). (ANI)

BJP’s Annamalai Seeks Probe Into Karur Stampede

BJP leader K. Annamalai on Sunday demanded a CBI investigation into the Karur rally stampede that killed 40 people, blaming alleged lapses by the state police and local administration for the tragedy.

Speaking to reporters, Annamalai said the state police and intelligence should have anticipated the size of the crowd and deployed adequate security.

“It is not Vijay’s fault. It is for the state police and intelligence to anticipate the crowd and deploy the police force adequately. Why did the police give them permission for 7 hours? Give it for 2 hours… As the Tamil Nadu BJP, we are demanding a CBI inquiry. The state CM wants a one-man former judge inquiry commission, and he also handpicked the judge. How can it be a fair inquiry?” he said.

The massive crowd at Vijay’s rally on Saturday reportedly turned chaotic, triggering panic. Several attendees fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Sources had said that overcrowding at the venue led to the tragedy.

Highlighting the shortcomings of the venue and security arrangements, Annamalai added, “On behalf of the Karur BJP, we have announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for each of the deceased… The place where the function took place yesterday is unfit to accommodate even 5,000 people… The state police says 500 people were deployed. We don’t believe that. The real ground-level police officers were fewer than 100 in number. The local administration’s failure has contributed to an episode of this nature. Vijay has every right to go anywhere in Tamil Nadu and campaign.”

He further said, “The government utterly failed yesterday… There were hardly 100 policemen on the ground. The complete responsibility and failure lie with the local and state administrations.TVK and Vijay also have to take responsibility for how the yatra was designed… For no more lives to be lost, Vijay and TVK have to rectify their mistakes, and the state government has to take 100% ownership for the utter failure of intelligence and deployment of manpower.”

Annamalai also urged Vijay to exercise greater responsibility during public events. “Here, the government failed in its responsibility as an honest broker… Vijay must understand that, as a cinema star transitioning into politics, he needs to be more responsible in his approach… Why did 10 children die? When you hold rallies on a weekend, more children will come with their mothers… You intentionally schedule it for a weekend because you want a larger crowd to attend… The design of this people’s meet itself is faulty… Vijay should be on the ground and face this,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu ADGP (Law and Order) S Davidson Devasirvatham responded to the Karur stampede, asserting that it was not an “intelligence failure” and that adequate arrangements had been made for Vijay’s political rally.

The ADGP said that street lighting was sufficient at the venue but acknowledged that certain conditions for crowd management had been violated.

Speaking to the media, he said, “…they (TVK) requested permission to conduct this event at a place called Light House Raundana. This was not accepted by the police because it was considered a high-risk place, with a petrol pump on the left and the Amaravati River bridge on the right. So the officers decided it was not advisable to give permission there. They requested another location, which was also inspected, and they were informed that the number of people they planned to bring could not be accommodated there. As an alternative, we suggested this place because a political party had recently organised an event there with approximately 12,000 to 15,000 people, and it had passed off very peacefully. So, they also went and saw the place. Finally, they agreed.”

“They gave us in writing that we could be allowed to hold the event there… No, it was not an intelligence failure… There were adequate streetlights there… Yes, some conditions were violated. A case has been registered, and the investigation will reveal who is involved,” the ADGP added. (ANI)

Earlier on Saturday, the Prime Minister had expressed condolences on the lives lost in the stampede during TVK chief and actor Vijay’s public rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur. He wished for the speedy recovery of people injured in the incident.

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” PM Modi said in a X post.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the victims and an aid of one lakh rupees each to those undergoing medical treatment in hospitals.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran on Sunday reached the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur, where the injured from the stampede are undergoing treatment and the bodies of victims are being handed over to their families after postmortem.

The Tamil Nadu BJP also called for the cancellation of all party programmes for the next two days.

“The heart-wrenching deaths that occurred in Karur are a tragic incident. The loss is irreplaceable. Words cannot describe it. There are no words to console the families of those who have been lost. Let us pray to God that all the brothers and sisters receiving treatment in the hospital recover fully. Bihar BJP Announces 45-Member Election Campaign Committee

With Bihar elections drawing closer, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of the state on Sunday announced the Election Campaign Committee for the elections.

The committee comprises of 45 members.

A day earlier, Union Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with party workers from Mithila and Tirhut regions at Samastipur.

In a post on X, Shah emphasised that all the workers are committed to a grassroots push with Modi Ji’s vision and the mission of ‘Developed Bihar’ to ensure a massive majority for the NDA in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Shah stated, “Today, in Samastipur, Bihar, I held a meeting with BJP workers from the district level in the Mithila and Tirhut regions regarding the upcoming elections and gave appropriate instructions. All workers from the 12 organisational districts under these regions are committed to reaching every resident in each area with Modi Ji’s vision and the mission of ‘Developed Bihar’ to ensure a massive majority for the NDA.”

Earlier, Shah addressed party workers in Bihar’s Araria. He asserted that this election is about driving out infiltrators from all of Bihar, promising that the BJP will drive out all the infiltrators from the sacred land of Bihar.

The Home Minister also launched attacks on opposition RJD, claiming that Lalu Yadav’s only aim is to make his son (Tejashwi Yadav) Chief Minister in this election.

Amit Shah said, “For Rahul and Lalu, this election is about making their party win. It’s about making Lalu’s son the Chief Minister. But for all of us, BJP workers, this election is about driving out infiltrators from all of Bihar. Make the NDA win with a two-thirds majority, I promise you that the BJP will do the work of driving these infiltrators from the sacred land of Bihar.”

Shah further came down heavily on the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), accusing them of committing “mass corruption” during their rule in the Centre and Bihar.

The Home Minister alleged that “Lalu and company” looted Bihar and committed numerous scams and frauds. Contrary to that, he said opposition parties are unable to level a single allegation of corruption against the Modi government, which has been in power for the last 11 years. (ANI)

‘Got To Fix India… Stop Actions That Harm US’: Commerce Secy Howard Lutnick

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Sunday in an interview with News Nation said that India needs to ‘react correctly’ to the US.

Lutnick said that India must open its markets and take actions that would not ‘harm’ the US.

“We have a bunch of countries to fix like Switzerland, Brazil, right? It’s got an issue. India, these are countries that need to really react correctly to America. Open their markets, stop taking actions that harm America, and that’s why we’re off sides with them,” he said.

He then said that the issues would be sorted, but India must ‘play ball’ with the US.

“Those, I think, will be sorted out, but they take time. And these countries have to understand that if you want to sell to the US consumer, right? You’ve got to play ball with the president of the United States. So those are still coming. A bunch of countries left but the big ones maybe the big ones you know India we’ll sort it out over time,” he said in the News Nation interview.

Earlier on September 26, a high-level Indian delegation, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during a recent visit to the United States (US), engaged in a series of productive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade deal and investment ties between the two countries, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry added that the Minister held key meetings with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative, and Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador-designate to India.

A delegation led by the Commerce and Industries Minister visited the United States of America from 22nd to 24th September 2025.

During these discussions, both sides exchanged views on various facets of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) deal. It was mutually agreed to continue engagements to expedite the early conclusion of a trade agreement that benefits both countries, the Ministry added. (ANI)

Asia Cup Final: Indian Fans Rally Behind Men In Blue

India and Pakistan gear up to face each other in the Asia Cup 2025 final. Fans across the country are pouring out their emotions and prayers for Team India, hoping for nothing less than victory in the high-stakes encounter.

In Siliguri, young cricketers gathered to express their support for Suryakumar Yadav and his men.

Young player Tanmay Paul said, “Today, expectations are high for India to win. India is playing very well in the Asia Cup. The batting and bowling are going on well. The openers, middle order, and finishers are all good.”

Another supporter of Team India from Siliguri, Amar Barua, voiced confidence in India’s dominance over Pakistan.

“India will definitely win today because India has a complete dominance over Pakistan. Today we will not leave the house. We will sit in front of the TV from 8 o’clock and will not get up until the match is over. We will also pray to Goddess Durga to make India win today. This will be a gift for us from Durga Pooja,” he said.

In Mumbai, fans echoed the same sentiment.

Surekanand Bhikne, another supporter of the Indian cricket team, said, “India’s chances are still high. Our India will definitely win this one. I have high hopes for Hardik Pandya because he’s very calm and composed, and he is currently doing very well… He’ll bowl well today, too.”

Forty-one years have passed since the inaugural Asia Cup in 1984, and for the first time, India and Pakistan have reached the final together.

In both encounters at the Asia Cup 2025, India has decisively defeated Pakistan.

Pakistan have lost a total of 12 out of their 15 T20I meetings against India.

A series of ups and downs marked Pakistan’s journey to the final. Skipper Salman Agha and his troops almost crashed out after Bangladesh had them in a corner during their Super Fours fixture. However, Pakistan dug deep and came from behind to conjure an 11-run victory to storm into the final.

Before the final, India had an injury scare with Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya suffering from cramps during the final Super Fours contest against Sri Lanka. They spent the majority of the parts on the sidelines but have been declared fit before the rivalry clash.
