Cyclone Ditwah Leaves Sri Lanka Devasted; 193 Dead, Scores Missing

Devastating floods have torn through parts of Colombo as Sri Lanka struggles with the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, with the death toll rising to 193 and another 228 people still missing, Al Jazeera reported, citing the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) statement.

The cyclone’s relentless weeklong rains triggered widespread floods and mudslides across the island. Only now–after rescue teams cleared blocked roads–is the true scale of destruction in the central region coming into focus.

“Although the cyclone has left us, heavy rains upstream are now flooding low-lying areas along the banks of the Kelani River,” a DMC official said, as northern parts of the capital faced rising floodwaters.

In Manampitiya, about 250km (155 miles) northeast of Colombo, receding waters revealed catastrophic damage. “Manampitiya is a flood-prone town, but I have never seen such a volume of water,” said 72-year-old resident S Sivanandan, describing ruined homes, businesses and roads, as per Al Jazeera.

The disaster has also created a medical emergency. Blood supplies have plunged to dangerous levels, with blood bank chief Lakshman Edirisinghe reporting just 236 units collected on Saturday–far short of the daily need of 1,500.

“Because of floods and heavy rains, we were unable to conduct our mobile campaigns to collect blood,” he said, urging people to donate at hospitals and blood banks, according to Al Jazeera.

Authorities are also warning that saturated mountain slopes could trigger new landslides in the days ahead.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency on Saturday and appealed for international help. India was first to respond, sending relief supplies and rescue helicopters, while Japan have also pledged assistance.

The cyclone has destroyed more than 25,000 homes, forcing 147,000 people into temporary shelters, with another 968,000 requiring assistance after being displaced. Military personnel are working alongside civilian responders in the huge relief effort.

This marks Sri Lanka’s deadliest natural disaster since 2017, when floods and landslides killed more than 200 people. The country’s worst flooding this century occurred in June 2003, killing 254 people. (ANI)

The Palestinian Rebellion 2.0

On November 29, 2025, the world observed the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, taking a page out of history. Dublin, Barcelona, Brussels, Berlin, London, Paris, Vienna, in city after city, people came out in their thousands.

Francesca Albanese and Greta Thunberg joined the resilient dockworkers of Genoa, Italy, who were the first to block all arms shipment from their ports to Israel. Spain and other countries have followed. Students, mothers and daughters, workers and teachers, they all walked, hand in hand, in alliance with the ravaged people of Palestine, the dead women and the children, and those still under the rubble.

A young female doctor who visited Al Shifa hospital in Gaza said that in the ruins, there are perhaps more than 1500 bodies of doctors, para-medics, nurses and patients. Another Australian female doctor who returned from Gaza, said, amidst the amputated bodies, including that of children, the doctors and nurses have been working tirelessly for two years, homeless, starving, without medicine or equipment, in bombed hospitals.

It was for them, the 220 plus brave Palestinian journalists, murdered, the little children who are back to make-shift schools, and the 1.5 million internally displaced survivors trapped in dilapidated tents in this freezing cold, with the constant fear of being bombed, now flooded with rain water – it is for them that the world came out in huge numbers on November 29.

Who says the genocide is over, asked Francesca Albanese. Despite the Trump Plan – almost every day Gaza and its refugee camps have been bombed, killing scores.

Meanwhile, Israeli violence has escalated in the West Bank while Trump has categorically said the West Bank will not be allowed to be annexed. Well, the West Bank has been annexed long ago by Israel, with an ageing and discredited Mahmoud Abbas still pretending to be at the helm.

Some videos are so graphic that one can’t believe that a government and its forces, in the age of international law and alleged modernity, would actually do it, again and again, and still be able to get away with it. Repeatedly.

Benjamin Netanyahu cares a damn, though he and his sick regime, is loathed across the world, as was witnessed in the United Nations meet recently when he addressed a near-empty hall, with most nations deciding to walk out right on his face. Predictably, among others, the new Mayor of New York has categorically stated that he would be arrested under international law if he sets foot in the city. An international pariah, warrants have been issued against him by the International Criminal Court on November 21, 2024. The charges: “Allegedly responsible for the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024.”

Two videos have yet again shocked the world, and they are running all over social media across multiple channels. A small boy, shot, is lying on the ground, perhaps screaming for help. A few Israeli soldiers are chatting nearby, totally oblivious of the injured boy. Are they cracking a sick joke?

The boy tries to get up, but he just can’t. Later, he is declared dead once he is taken to the hospital. This is deliberate murder by the IDF of an innocent child.

The other video is more graphic and tells the same old story. This latest video is running across the social media, including in Dropsite News, one of the credible global media these days, run with people’s funding.

In Jenin, West Bank, armed Israeli forces arrive outside what looks like run-down garage with a huge shutter. Two young men are asked to come out, their hands raised. Then they are told go back. As they bend down below the shutter, they are shot dead. This is ‘Execution’ in plain day light. The video is not grainy. The hand that holds it is not shaking.

It has been reported that the Israeli army and police have said that they were investigating the killings, which was filmed from several angles, including by the AFP.

Reports say that Israel’s fanatically extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir backed the forces who opened fire, saying: “Terrorists must die!” The UN rights office spokesman said the incident came as “killings of Palestinians by Israeli security forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank have been surging, without accountability, even in the rare cases when investigations are announced”. He said “statements by a senior Israeli government official” seeking “to absolve Israeli security forces of responsibility” raised “serious concerns about the credibility of any future review or investigation conducted by any entity that is not fully independent from the government”

In a country where 60 per cent of people apparently believe that the on-going genocide is not enough, that all Palestinians and babies must be slaughtered, that Israel is beyond all norms of human conduct and international law, Ben Gvir or Bibi, are merely symbolic ‘icons’ of a pathologically sick society. Witness the fact the rapists of a brutalised Palestinian prisoner inside prison, by men of the security forces, were hailed, and showcased on Israeli television!

Are they indeed ‘role models’?

The UN has called the Jenin murders an “apparent summary execution”. One hopes Donald Trump gets to see it as well, and so does Keir Starmer, and the German PM, Friedrich Merz — committed suppliers of the murder machines and bombs to Benjamin Netanyahu, as the genocide takes no pause in Gaza despite the ceasefire, endorsed by all the rich stooge Islamic monarchies and dictatorships in the Middle-East.

Even Germany, committed supporter of Israel, as an apparent reverse guilt complex for the Nazi-led Holocaust, has spoken, however fake it all seems. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in a joint press conference with Ayman Safadi, the Foreign Minister of Jordan, has been compelled to admit: “The violent acts of extremist settlers have reached a shocking scale there in recent weeks. They prevent olive farmers from harvesting, they devastate entire plantations, they set cars and houses on fire,” he said. “These settlers are openly pursuing the goal of driving Palestinians out of their communities…”

Safadi said: “Although the Israeli government says it does not condone this settler violence, we have yet to see any real progress in the West Bank that would actually prevent the settlers from carrying out these violent acts. These constant human rights violations, which border on genocide, must stop… Peace will become impossible if Israel annexes the West Bank in one way or another. That is illegal and contradicts the principles of international law.

Meanwhile, the E4 nations have stated that they are “deeply alarmed” by the rapid rise in violent attacks by armed Israeli settlers. Citing UN figures, they pointed out that 264 settler attacks were recorded in October. France, Germany, Italy, and the UK comprise the E4.

Italy witnessed a total shutdown and strike on November 28, 2025, the third against the genocide, even while the beleaguered Meloni regime supports Israel. Thousands came out on the streets.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s recent visit to India was cancelled, apparently due to security reasons. In a post on X, the Israeli PM’s office wrote, “Israel’s bond with India and between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very strong… The PM has full confidence in India’s security under PM Modi, and teams are already coordinating a new visit date.”

As the global pressure continues unabated against an isolated and hated Israel, and governments are forced to respond to relentless mass protests of their own citizens, the message from the International Solidarity Day with Palestine continues to reverberate. Many more governments like Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Denmark, etc, are seeking sanctions, arms embargo and punishment for Tel Aviv. Across the world, Bibi is perhaps the most hated politician, and he knows that.

India was once a committed ally of Palestine. Yasser Arafat was an iconic figure, a close friend of India. Now, not even peaceful protests against the genocide are allowed here. In this context, if Bibi visits India in the days to come, and his arrival is celebrated as a grand welcome, it will surely tell another story.

The whole world is watching.

‘I Know My Limits, No Differences Between CM Siddaramaiah And Me’: DK Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said all is well within the state Congress ranks and there is no difference of opinion between him and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar said he is well aware of his “limits” as Karnataka Congress president and that his party’s sole focus is to prepare a strategy for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.

“There is no difference between me and the CM. Being the party president, I know my limits. Nowhere have I made any comments or expressed a difference of opinion with the CM. We are all working together. There are a lot of aspirations of the people of Karnataka, and we are committed to working for them. Our aim is 2028 and 2029, and we are working for it. The CM and I will work out a strategy. We want to call an all-party meeting on various issues,” DK Shivakumar told reporters.

Amid rising speculation over a leadership tussle between Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, the Congress sought to project unity as the two leaders held an hour-long breakfast meeting on Saturday, reiterating their commitment to the party high command’s directives.

Although Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar aimed to send out a message of harmony, the opposition dismissed the meeting as a “breakup par makeup”, alleging that the leaders were merely attempting to mask their internal differences with a show of solidarity.

Speculations about a leadership change in Karnataka rose on November 20, when the Siddaramaiah-led government completed its half-term.

Siddaramaiah, the current CM, insists he’ll complete his five-year term, citing the mandate given by the people of Karnataka. He’s emphasised his commitment to fulfilling the party’s promises, including the five guarantee schemes. Shivakumar, on the other hand, is pushing for a leadership change, citing a “secret agreement” among senior leaders that he should take over as CM after 2.5 years.

The high command, led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, is expected to make a decision soon. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have expressed willingness to abide by the party’s decision. The tussle, fueled by the 2023 “power-sharing agreement” between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, has pushed each side’s loyalists to lobby for their leaders’ claims to the state’s top post. (ANI)

IMD Red Alert As Cyclone Ditwah Continues Northward Parallel To TN-Puducherry Coast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts, as Cyclonic Storm Ditwah continues its northward trajectory over the southwest Bay of Bengal, steadily moving closer to the shoreline.

According to the IMD’s 5:30 am update on Sunday, Cyclone Ditwah moved nearly northwards at a speed of 7 kmph over the past six hours and was centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts.

“Cyclonic Storm Ditwah [Pronunciation: Ditwah] over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Tamil Nadu- Puducherry coasts: Cyclone Warning for north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts,” the IMD notice stated.

According to the Meteorological Department, the storm was positioned near latitude 11.1°N and longitude 80.6°E, marking a slight northward shift since the previous advisory.

At this position, the cyclone lay about 90 km east-northeast of Karaikal, 120 km northeast of Vedaranniyam, 130 km southeast of Puducherry, 170 km north-northeast of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, and 220 km south-southeast of Chennai, indicating its continued proximity to the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline.

The IMD stated that the cyclone is very likely to move almost directly northwards, running parallel to the coast over the next 24 hours.

As it progresses, Cyclone Ditwah is expected to come within 70 km of the coastline by noon today, narrowing further to just 30 km by this evening, raising concerns of intensified rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding in coastal districts.

“It is very likely to move nearly northwards parallel to the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts during the next 24 hours. While moving northwards the cyclonic storm will be centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal within a minimum distance of 70 km and 30 km from the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by noon and evening of today, the 30th November respectively,” the IMD notice read.

In response to the cyclone, Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, reviewed preparedness measures with the General Manager and Southern Railways teams.

The Union Minister stressed the need to establish dedicated helplines and passenger-assistance desks to support travellers amid potential cancellations or rerouting and reaffirmed Indian Railways’ commitment to public safety.

He also instructed concerned officials to ensure the activation of War Rooms at divisional, Zonal, and Railway Board levels to monitor the situation and remain alert for any extreme situation. He has also asked railway officials to coordinate with civil administration authorities and proactively communicate with passengers until normalcy is restored. (ANI)

Delhi Police Files A New FIR Against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi In National Herald case

The Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) filed a new FIR in the National Herald money laundering case on Sunday.

The FIR included six names, in addition to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. It was registered after the ED headquarters filed a complaint with the EOW.

Meanwhile, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi again adjourned the decision on whether to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) chargesheet in the National Herald money laundering case.

The chargesheet names several senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and others, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED has alleged financial irregularities involving Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), the original publisher of the National Herald. The court is now set to pronounce its order on December 16.

Earlier, the court had issued notices to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others, noting that they have a “right to be heard” before any decision on cognisance is taken. Special Judge Vishal Gogne stressed that this right is essential for a fair trial, as supported by Section 223 of the new criminal law (BNSS).

The court highlighted that Section 223 allows the accused a special opportunity to be heard even before cognisance is taken. This provision, it said, does not conflict with the PMLA but, instead, strengthens fairness and transparency in criminal proceedings. The judge also noted that BNSS is a progressive law intended to protect the rights of the accused.

The court further observed that the predicate offence, already under trial at Rouse Avenue Court, includes IPC Sections 403, 406, 420, and 120B. As per PMLA rules, the predicate offence and the money laundering case must be heard in the same court.

The National Herald case originated from a complaint filed by former MP Subramanian Swamy, alleging misuse of funds by Congress leaders and companies linked to AJL. (ANI)

Over 90 Per Cent Of Air India A320 Fleet Reset, Operations Continue With Minimal Disruption

Air India has successfully addressed glitches in over 90 per cent of its operating A320 family aircraft impacted by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Airbus’ requirement for a software realignment, the airline said in a statement on Sunday.

In a post on X, Air India said, “Air India has successfully completed the reset on over 90 percent of its operating A320 family aircraft that were impacted by EASA and Airbus’ requirement for a software realignment. We expect to cover the entire fleet within the timeline prescribed by EASA, with safety remaining our top priority.”

The airline added that its engineering and ground teams worked round the clock to ensure there were no cancellations and minimal impact on flight schedules.

“Rising to the occasion, our engineering and ground colleagues worked round the clock to ensure there were no cancellations and that the impact on our schedule integrity across the network was minimal,” the statement read.

“We thank our guests for their patience and support, and request those flying with us to continue checking the latest flight status at https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html or contact our 24×7 Call Centre at 011-69329333 / 011-69329999 before heading to the airport,” Air India further added.

Earlier, following concerns about a safety risk posed by the Airbus A320’s software update, Air India Express on Saturday said it had completed safety checks on most of its fleet, with the remaining checks to be completed soon.

The airline worked with Airbus and authorities to minimise disruptions, prioritising passenger safety. Operations are expected to return to normal once the checks are complete.

In a statement, an Air India Express Spokesperson said, “We have completed the precautionary safety actions on the majority of our Airbus A320 fleet, with the remaining aircraft on track for completion within the advised timeline. This has been achieved with minimal impact on operations through the coordinated efforts of our engineering, operations, and flight safety teams. Air India Express continues to work closely with Airbus and the relevant authorities, reaffirming our commitment to safe and reliable operations.”

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury on Saturday apologised to customers and passengers affected by delays caused by a required fix on some A320 aircraft.

Faury emphasised that safety is the top priority and assured that teams are working around the clock to implement the updates and return planes to service.

“The fix required on some #A320 aircraft has been causing significant logistical challenges and delays since yesterday. I want to sincerely apologise to our airline customers and passengers who are impacted now. But we consider that nothing is more important than safety when people fly on one of our Airbus Aircraft, like millions do every day. Our teams are working around the clock to support our operators and ensure these updates are deployed as swiftly as possible to get planes back in the sky and resume normal operations, with the safety assurance you expect from #Airbus,” CEO Airbus said in a statement posted on X by the Airbus newsroom.

The fix is being deployed as swiftly as possible to minimise disruptions, and Airbus is supporting operators to ensure normal operations resume as soon as possible.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an airworthiness directive banning the use of multiple Airbus aircraft models following concerns about a safety risk posed by the company’s software update. (ANI)

Solar Energy: Lessons From The Neighbourhood

Whatever be the state of our relations with the next-door neighbour Pakistan – the bitterness was much in evidence when our cricketers refused to shake hands with the Pakistani players at the recently held Asia Cup finals – we should for our own benefit keep ourselves informed about any success stories there inviting global attention. One example is the UK based energy thinktank Ember in its midyear global electricity insights making a special reference to Pakistan for its striking progress in building solar power capacity.

The Ember report says, among all countries, Pakistan saw solar recording the “largest” rise in its share of total electricity generation from 4.4 per cent in the first half of 2021 to 21.99 per cent at this year’s June end. Thanks to principally rapidly growing installation of solar network on the rooftop of private houses and business establishments, this stream of renewable energy could make such impressive progress in Pakistan.

A combination of high grid electricity charges and a raft of incentives for rooftop solar system installation goes on encouraging more and more families and small to medium businesses to use the rooftop and sunrays that fall on it to generate power. The incentives include exempting solar panels from sales tax duty free import of batteries and solar panels.

What is more, provinces like Sindh and Punjab either offer free or at highly subsidised rates solar equipment to the economically disadvantaged. Households and small businesses are given interest free bank loans for installation of solar systems at building top. What is more, electricity that remains surplus after own use is allowed for release on national grid at a fixed rate. But as there is now dilution of procurement rate of surplus rooftop solar power, the payback period of new installation has gotten extended. That, however, has not become a deterrent to go for rooftop based solar electricity.

Like much of India, Pakistan has the nature’s gift of high solar insolation over a great number of days in a year, particularly in Sindh, Punjab and Baluchistan. The World Bank has estimated the country’s solar power potential at 40 GW facilitated by an average 8 to 10 hours of strong daily sunlight in most parts of the country. The impressive growth in solar capacity is a statement that government policies are rightly framed and the people have found an escape route from paying exorbitant prices for grid power.

At the same time, the country will have to sufficiently strengthen the transmission infrastructure to manage well the power flowing from solar and wind. While the focus remains on building new capacity of solar energy through a combination of micro units and industry size complexes, Pakistan will also be required to exploit its wind resource to cut its dependence on energy derived from fossil fuels. Some studies suggest approximately 3 per cent of Pakistan’s land can generate about 132 GW of wind power, based on 5 MW per square km.

Pakistan by all accounts is a nuisance state for us, especially for harbouring terrorists and allowing them to carry out subversive acts here. But any time that country takes steps to control pollution, at this point the reference is promotion of environment friendly renewable energy, we have reasons to feel happy. Let this be explained. Pollutants are no respecter of borders as these travel across national boundaries thousands of miles through natural pathways. India shares a 3,323 km border with Pakistan involving Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. So less the emission of carbon (CO2) in Pakistan, better it is for the Indian citizens of the border states and Union Territories and beyond.

In India too, the sun shines bright over most parts of the country with an average 300 sunny days a year, with the caveat that the number of sunny hours a day in many regions is falling. Whatever that is, India having made a commitment to become a net zero emissions entity by 2070 at COP 26 summit in 2021, it is doubling down on building non-fossil fuels-based electricity generation capacity. As of September 2025, such capacity was 247.30 GW, of which renewable energy constituted 233.99 GW. Significantly, the country’s non-fossil fuels pivoted power capacity has now over half the share of total installed capacity of 484.82 GW. In the power basket, solar continues to make the most impressive progress in terms of capacity creation.

At 127.33 GW capacity, with additions of 4,202.16 MW in September, India is ranked third in world ranking of solar power producer. In India’s target of building renewable energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030, solar power will likely have a share of more than a half. But what about rooftop solar structure in residential buildings and small business establishments! Though this happened not a moment too soon, New Delhi introduced PM Surya Ghar: Muft Yojana in February 2024 to provide incentives by way of subsidising the cost of solar panels of up to 40 per cent along with free electricity to encourage households to use their rooftop for solar power generation.

As claimed by the government, the programme involving an investment of ₹75,000 crore is expected to benefit 10 million households who will be beneficiary of up to 300 units of free electricity every month. But to have a good scheme is not enough. This must be backed up by sustained campaign across the country to make people aware of the benefits that the Yojana yields.

Reports suggest the country has an estimated potential of 637 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity. Even if a third of that potential is brought into operation, the entire electricity requirements of the residential sector will be met. The challenge for the government and industry, therefore, is to build mass awareness that by installing rooftop solar structure not only will economic benefits accrue to households but by doing so will result in curbing CO2 emissions.

What will support mass building of rooftop solar structures is the rapid rate at which indigenous capacity of solar photovoltaic modules and solar PV cells is getting created in the country, thanks to supportive policies. According to an ICRA report, in both India has now export surpluses. However, the recent US tariffs has thrown challenges to exports.
