Flowers In The Dark

The unbearable lightness of a stolen mandate. Alleged or real. A stolen democracy. A freedom struggle and a history of non-violent struggle.

And no post-poll analysis will help. Mostly, it is an apology for the status quo. A delusionary tactic that all is well. An illusion of normalcy, whereby all normalcy seems fake.

All is well! Is it?

Stolen or not stolen, you can spot a banana republic from a distance. A camouflaged democracy is as transparent as it can be. Neither a totally brainwashed nation, nor a totally whitewashed reality can sugarcoat the filthy waters of the quagmire. It’s indeed a typical case of sinking-sinking-drinking-water. The water, like the air, is dirty. Reeking of poison and bile and vicious substances manufactured like consent.

And you can’t even protest against the air you breathe!

Those who have studied politics as an interdisciplinary subject intrinsic in social sciences, philosophy, arts, culture and literature, lived and practiced it as a principle of hope, in the remote mappings of the margins, far away from the cushy, addictive trappings of the power establishment, know it too well. Like a kid playing hide and seek, chooses to shut his eyes thinking she/he will not be discovered, you just can’t hide anymore, despite all the pseudo comfort zones of trappings and mappings you have carved out for yourself. Detachment then becomes a seductive nightmare, a never-ending stasis of stagnation, a delusion of not accepting the testimony of daily defeat.

No, you can’t hide. This evil in the air will get you, anyway, any which way you can hide, eyes shut. Like that famous Pastor Martin Niemolar poem (1946): First they came for the … and I did not speak out… Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

From one geography to another, the banana republic’s well-oiled wheels roll on like a mechanical nightmare in action replay, fast forward, on and on, onwards! It does not care for ethical conduct, or the stated conventions of a democracy; it cares a damn if the whole world is outraged. They have allies, and they are not skin-deep. This is because truth has already been slaughtered in cold blood, like the women and children of Gaza.

All distances shall close in. The object might seem far, but it is closer than it seems. Just look at your cracked mirror. Don’t shut your eyes. It won’t help.

In these post-abnormal times, all that is fake and sold out, is loud, successful and cacophonic. The only paradigm shift is despair, often exiled in stark silence which no one wants to see or hear. This is a different kind of twilight zone. A modern, diabolical mask of everyday doomsday. Almost invisible.

From the Andamans kala pani, to the slave ships and racist shores of the goddamned ‘free world’ of the white supremacists, their skins and teeth and faces rotting with bad faith and bad language, it is not difficult to see the repetitive unfolding of history’s ceaseless march from one barbarism into another. Only the weapons have changed. While the weapons of the weak seem to have remained the same.

And, yet, is there any other option but to dig in?

With words and silences, images, still and moving, black and white pictures, charcoal sketches, spoofy cartoons and colourful comic strips, parallel cinema, the magic of animation, independent media, documentary and fiction, flowers, books and dreams, insomnia and mountain springs, the soft stillness of a winter morning sunshine, and the dark, sheltered warmth of a freezing night. With fingers and eyes, heart and soul, senses and instincts, solitude and solidarity. Dig in, I say. Feel the moist, dew-soaked winter earth with your hands, eyes and eyelashes, lips and caresses, whispers and poetry. Resurrect!

Listen to Jean Paul Sartre, in this brilliant preface to the epical Wretched of the Earth, by Frantz Fannon:

“A new generation came on the scene, which changed the issue. With unbelievable patience, its writers and poets tried to explain to us that our values and the true facts of their lives did not hang together, and that they could neither reject them completely nor yet assimilate them. By and large, what they were saying was this: ‘You are making us into monstrosities; your humanism claims we are at one with the rest of humanity but your racist methods set us apart…’

… Listen: ‘Let us waste no time in sterile litanies and nauseating mimicry. Leave this Europe where they are never done talking of Man, yet murder men everywhere they find them, at the corner of every one of their own streets, in all the corners of the globe. For centuries they have stifled almost the whole of humanity in the name of a so-called spiritual experience.’ The tone is new. Who dares to speak thus? It is an African, a man from the Third World, an ex-‘native’. He adds: ‘Europe now lives at such a mad, reckless pace that she is running headlong into the abyss; we would do well to keep away from it.’ In other words, she’s done for. A truth which is not pleasant to state but of which we are all convinced, are we not, fellow-Europeans, in the marrow of our bones?…”

And yet, Europe shows the way. In each day of resistance. The longest standing ovation in the history of the Venice Film Festival was for a brave film on six-year-old Hind Rijab, her fragile body riddled with 335 bullets by 25 plus armed men of the IDF, while she pleaded for help on a helpline. Elders in their 80s and 90s, some in wheel chairs, black and white, men and women, ready to go to prison, while branded as ‘terrorists’ by Keir Starmer’s guilt-ridden police in London, Leeds, elsewhere in UK. One of them singing another version of ‘We shall overcome’ – you know, so well, we are not terrorists.

His solo becomes a collective chorus. A symphony of resistance.

Italy goes for three total shutdowns. Schoolkids and mothers join dockworkers, university students, writers and artists, singing songs of solidarity with the homeless people of a ravaged Gaza. Packed concerts becoming arenas of protest. Football stadiums erupting with the colours of the Palestine flag. City after city have exploded. Slogans of mass resistance resonate like a memory in slow motion. Like graffiti in long hand, on a faded brick wall, written yesterday.

And then arrives a smiling young immigrant from New York, touching hands and hearts, ready to take on the mighty empire of white billionaires, and racist deep pockets, with their media and war machines of mass murders, and their phobia of mythical commies –Reds under the Beds! He does not fudge or doublespeak – he speaks it right on their faces. Yes, it is a genocide in Gaza, he says. He stands with the suffering and aspirations of ordinary folks, across race and colour, and he means it. No wonder, he sparks optimism and joy all over the world.

Ditto in Spain and Ireland. And in campuses across Europe and the US. On the streets and public squares. Everyday a new song emerges in the horizon, solo, shared, sung alone and in chorus, becoming an international anthem in the social media. Like Bella Ciao!

When emotions and melodies of resistance touch the deepest chord of the soul, become so intensely popular, viral, loved, sung in private and public spaces, how can you condemn them in prison?

I tell you, nothing is immortal. Nothing lasts forever. Not even banana republics.

‘Either Losing Dignity Or Risk Losing A Major Partner,’ : Zelenskyy On US Peace Plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday (local time) warned that Ukraine could face a tough choice between sacrificing its dignity and freedom or losing Washington’s backing, as Kyiv deliberates on the US-proposed peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Russia, Al Jazeera reported.

Addressing a gathering outside his office, Zelenskyy called for national unity, stressing that he would never betray the Ukrainian people.

“Now is one of the most difficult moments of our history … Now, Ukraine can face a very difficult choice — either losing dignity or risk losing a major partner,” Zelenskyy said.

“I will fight 24/7 to ensure that at least two points in the plan are not overlooked – the dignity and freedom of Ukrainians,” he added.

A new Ukraine peace proposal being discussed within the Trump administration could involve Kyiv ceding territory in the eastern Donbas region and agreeing to limits on its military capabilities in exchange for US-backed security guarantees, CNN reported, citing a Western official familiar with the ongoing deliberations.

According to CNN, the US officials said the proposal remains a work in progress, noting that any eventual agreement would require compromises from both Russia and Ukraine, who have been in conflict since 2014, turning the situation into a full-scale war after Moscow’s invasion in 2022.

The officials stressed that some of the elements currently circulating — including those seen as favouring Moscow’s demands — are not final and are expected to change as discussions continue.

The draft, comprising 28 points, has reportedly been reviewed by US President Donald Trump and has his support, CNN reported.

It represents Washington’s latest attempt to revive peace efforts and end the nearly three-year-long conflict.

Some provisions, particularly those calling for Ukrainian territorial concessions in areas not fully under Russian control, have previously been rejected by Kyiv. (ANI)

Trump And Mamdani Strike Unexpected Harmony After White House Meeting

US President Donald Trump met New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday. The encounter with the man who once called himself “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare” unfolded far more amicably than anticipated.

Inside the Oval Office, the two appeared cordial and cooperative, repeatedly emphasising areas of common interest for New York rather than the ideological clashes that previously defined their relationship. The tone was notably softer despite Trump earlier labelling Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” and a “total nut job,” while Mamdani had criticised Trump’s administration as “authoritarian.”

After their talks, Trump said he was surprised by how constructive the meeting proved to be. Describing the discussion as “great,” he remarked about the democratic socialist, “I think he is going to surprise some conservative people, actually.”

According to both leaders, the conversation centred largely on housing, living costs and inflation, issues that shaped Mamdani’s campaign and also dominated Trump’s 2024 messaging. With Mamdani by his side, the president told reporters, “We’re going to be helping him, to make everybody’s dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York.”

Mamdani highlighted a spirit of cooperation, noting, “What I really appreciate about the president is that the meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers.”

Trump downplayed Mamdani’s previous criticism of his deportation policies and accusations that he acted like a despot, saying executive responsibility often reshapes a leader’s outlook. Throughout the press briefing, Trump repeatedly stepped in to deflect challenging questions directed at Mamdani.

When a reporter asked Mamdani about past comments comparing Trump to a fascist, Trump interjected, “I’ve been called much worse than a despot.”

Moments later, asked whether he still believed Trump was a fascist, Trump cut in again, saying, “That’s OK. You can just say yes. OK? It’s easier. It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind.”

He also defended Mamdani when questioned about choosing to fly to Washington instead of using lower-emission travel, saying, “I’ll stick up for you.”

Mamdani, who will take office in January, said he sought the meeting to discuss how the federal government could help ease affordability pressures in New York City. While Trump had previously accused him of being a “communist” and threatened to restrict federal support, he struck a different tone on Friday, acknowledging earlier threats but adding, “We don’t want that to happen. I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Trump played a central role in the mayoral race, endorsing independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in the final hours and warning that the city had “ZERO chance of success, or even survival” under Mamdani. He also questioned Mamdani’s citizenship and said he would have him arrested if he refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Mamdani defeated Cuomo, calling him a “puppet” of the president and declaring during a debate, “I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare, as a progressive Muslim immigrant who actually fights for the things that I believe in.”

At the White House, Trump suggested Mamdani could end up benefiting Republicans politically, predicting that the mayor-elect “will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party.”

For Mamdani, the meeting offered an elevated national platform as he moves from state lawmaker to the incoming mayor of the country’s largest city. For Trump, it provided an opportunity to underscore his focus on affordability at a time when economic pressures remain a top concern for voters.

Trump also pointed to similarities in their views on inflation, saying, “Some of his ideas are really the same ideas that I have.”

The meeting remained calm and cooperative despite expectations of tension, with Trump even agreeing with Mamdani’s push for more housing, noting, “People would be shocked, but I want to see the same thing.” (ANI)

‘He’ll Have To Approve It’: Trump Seeks Zelenskyy’s Nod On Russia-Ukraine Peace Plan

US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) expressed confidence that Washington has identified a possible path to achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia, but stressed that the proposal would move forward only if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approves it, CNN reported.

“We think we have a way of getting peace, he’s going to have to approve it. I think they’re getting reasonably close, but I don’t want to predict,” Trump said while speaking to the reporters at the Oval Office.

His remarks come amid heightened discussions over a new US-drafted peace plan that is currently being considered by Kyiv. The proposal, according to CNN, is still under development and is expected to undergo significant revisions as negotiations continue.

Earlier on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the country is facing one of the most challenging moments in its history, as it weighs the implications of the US proposal, Al Jazeera reported.

Speaking at a public gathering outside his office in Kyiv, Zelenskyy stressed the need for national unity and reiterated that he would never betray the Ukrainian people.

Delhi Blast Case: ₹5 Lakh AK-47, Explosives in Freezer, Multi-Layer Handler Network

Intelligence agencies investigating the November 10 Delhi terror attack involving a suicide car blast have uncovered fresh details pointing to a wider transnational terror network, a structured chain of handlers, and preparations for multiple coordinated attacks, official sources told ANI.

At least 15 people were killed and several others were injured in the car blast near the Red Fort in the national capital. Dr Umar Nabi, driving the car with explosives, committed the attack. The four other main accused, Dr Muzammil Shakeel Ganai of Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir), Dr Adeel Ahmed Rather of Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir), Dr Shaheen Saeed of Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), and Mufti Irfan Ahmad Wagay of Shopian (Jammu and Kashmir), have been taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

According to intelligence sources, the accused Muzammil, who was arrested after over 2500 kgs of ammonium nitrate were recovered in Faridabad, had purchased an AK-47 rifle for more than Rs 5 lakh, which was later recovered from Adeel’s locker. This weapon purchase is a critical link. It reflects the level of preparation and financing behind the module, an intelligence agency source said.

Sources further revealed that each accused in the module was reporting to a different handler.

Muzammil’s handler was separate, while blast-accused Umar was reporting to another. Two key handlers, Mansoor and Hashim, were operating under a senior handler believed to be supervising the module’s overall activities. These handlers were operating in layers, an official said.

Intelligence sources confirmed that in 2022, Muzammil, Adeel and another accused, Muzaffar Ahmad, travelled to Turkey on the instructions of an individual named Okasa, who is associated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

They were supposed to be routed to Afghanistan through a contact in Turkey. But after keeping them waiting for nearly a week, the handler backed out, a source said.

Investigators found that Okasa communicated with Muzammil through a Telegram ID. Their communication intensified after Muzammil asked him about his handler.

Intelligence officials said Umar had been studying bomb-making videos, manuals and open-source content online. He procured chemical ingredients from Nuh and electronic components from Bhagirath Palace and Faridabad’s NIT Market.

He also bought a deep freezer to store the chemicals and prepare the explosive mixture.

The freezer was used to stabilise and process the compound, a source added.

Investigators have confirmed a serious fight between Muzammil and Umar inside the Al-Falah University premises in Faridabad over money, an incident witnessed by several students. Following the confrontation, Umar handed over his red EcoSport car, which already contained explosive material, to Muzammil.

According to intelligence agencies, the module was planning to store explosives at multiple locations and execute simultaneous attacks.

All indicators point to a coordinated multi-location strike plan. The recovered material and digital footprint strongly support this assessment, a senior intelligence source told ANI.

Further investigation is underway to trace the broader network, financial channels and international handlers involved in the conspiracy.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Friday refused to issue directions allowing Red Fort terror attack co-accused Jasir Bilal Wani to meet his lawyer at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters. Wani is currently in the NIA’s custodial remand. (ANI)

‘Pilot Lost Control Or Blackout Due To G-Forces”: Defence Expert On Tejas Crash In Dubai

Looking at the nature of the Tejas aircraft crash during the Dubai Air Show 2025, defence expert Captain Anil Gaur (Retd.) speculated that the incident might have occurred due to the pilot losing control or a blackout due to the g-forces induced by gravity.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, Captain Gaur said that the exact cause of the crash can only be determined after the data from the cockpit is retrieved.

Expressing condolences to the family of Wing Commander Naman Syal, who tragically lost his life in the crash, Captain Gaur said, “It is sad that our Tejas jet was crashed during the Dubai air show and our brave pilot lost his life. From the visuals, it seems that the jet lost control during the acrobatics, or there might have been a pilot blackout. Blackout here means the excessive gravitational force.”

“Pilots wear a G-suit so that the blood does not pool in their legs; there might have been an issue with that. What exactly happened can only be determined once the cockpit data is retrieved. I express my condolences to the family of the pilot,” he added.

Excessive g-forces can cause blood to pool in the lower body, potentially leading to a pilot blackout.

The Indian Air Force announced the death of the Pilot after a Tejas aircraft crashed and burst into flames at the Dubai Air Show 2025 on Friday.

“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” a statement by the Indian Air Force said.

The IAF said a court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident in which the pilot succumbed to fatal injuries.

The plane went down while performing an aerial display before a large crowd, local media reported.

Khaleej Times reported that the fighter jet crashed into the ground soon after take-off. Photos and videos shared online show plumes of black smoke billowing into the air from the aircraft on the ground.

The news outlet cited one eyewitness as saying, “As soon as the plane took off, it crashed. I am not sure which aircraft it was.” (ANI)

‘I Was Terrified’: Shefali Shah Reflects On ‘Delhi Crime 3’ Journey, Expresses Gratitude To Fans

Actor Shefali Shah has expressed deep gratitude to her fans following the release of ‘Delhi Crime Season 3.’

Taking to Instagram, Shefali penned a long note and poured out her heart, revealing how she was “terrified”.

The actor also reflected on reprising her character as DIG Vartika Chaturvedi and wrote, “I played a different side of Vartika this time. She felt the pain and anger with equal and more intensity, but instead of showing it, she channelled it into finding the girls. All situations require one aspect that’s more prevalent than others. Certain situations need to be handled with power, certain with strength, certain with command, certain with force, and certain, like this one, with compassion and empathy. This time there was no bravado, it was just perseverance and a relentless pursuit to find the girls and do what she believes she was born to do, protect, safeguard and get justice.”

Shefali shared how she started embracing the character and her emotions and added, “When I saw the show myself, I didn’t know if you would be able to see my version of Vartika and love her as much as the last time. A lot of times, histrionics, drama, and heightened emotion are considered a good performance. But I wasn’t performing, I was just becoming her, and this is how she felt.”

Overwhelmed by the audience’s response, Shefali Shah also opened up on how she was left “overjoyed and weeping with relief.”

Reiterating her gratitude, Shefali thanked her fans for their immense love and support for the show.

The new season of ‘Delhi Crime’ shows Shefali Shah back as the fierce and fearless DIG Vartika Chaturvedi, alongside Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, Huma Qureshi, Sayani Gupta, Mita Vashisht, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Kelly Dorji.

Official synopsis of the show reads, “At the centre of the storm stands DIG Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah) — our steadfast Madam Sir — who begins connecting the dots between these disappearances and a system fueled by fear, profit, and silence. As her investigation deepens, all roads lead to one name whispered across cities: Badi Didi (Huma Qureshi). Ruthless, invisible, and always one step ahead, she is the elusive architect of the criminal empire who Vartika and her team are determined to bring down — setting the stage for a psychological face-off between two women who refuse to lose.”

‘Delhi Crime Season 3’ is currently streaming on Netflix. (ANI)

Ranbir Reveals His Name With Grandpa Raj Kapoor On ‘Dining With The Kapoors’

Netflix’s latest special, Dining with the Kapoors, brought together members of the iconic Kapoor family, Randhir Kapoor, Rima Jain, Neetu Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, as they bonded over food, memories, and nostalgia.

While enjoying a lavish spread, the Kapoors reminisced about their shared moments and fondly recalled their deep connection with one another and with the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor.

Ranbir opened up about a lesser-known family story. He shared how his name is not just his own, but a tribute to his grandfather, the showman Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor’s full name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor, and decades later, when Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor welcomed their son, they chose to give him a part of that name, carrying forward the family’s history, spirit, and love for cinema.

“My name is actually my grandfather’s name. His real name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor. That’s how he used to sign his cheques. And when I was born, I think my family was running out of names from R. So, my grand-uncle Mr. Shammi Kapoor told my grandfather (Raj Kapoor) that since you have not used this name, let’s give it to him. That’s how I got the name Ranbir,” he shared.
