‘Ashamed To Beg For Aid Abroad’: Pak PM

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed frustration over his country’s reliance on foreign loans, stating that seeking financial aid undermines national self-respect and is a source of embarrassment for officials, including Army Chief Asim Munir.

Addressing Pakistan’s prominent exporters and business leaders at an event in Islamabad, Sharif emphasised the burden of debt on Pakistan’s dignity, indicating the need for alternative economic strategies.

“We feel ashamed when Field Marshal Asim Munir and I go around the world BEGGING for money. Taking loans is a huge burden on our self-respect. Our heads bow down in shame. We cannot say NO to many things they want us to do,” said Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif as reported by local broadcaster A1tv.

Sharif’s admission of “begging” for loans highlights the country’s economic struggles and reliance on international assistance. This comes as Pakistan seeks IMF support and debt rollovers.

He also praised “all-weather friend” China, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, which have supported Islamabad through both good times and bad, regardless of circumstances.

Pakistan’s economic lifelines are heavily reliant on China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, which provide critical financial support to stabilise foreign exchange reserves and prevent a balance-of-payments crisis.

China has rolled over billions in safe deposits to help Pakistan meet debt obligations, with $4 billion projected for 2024-25. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a key framework, with over $60 billion in energy and infrastructure investments.

Saudi Arabia extended a $3 billion deposit with the State Bank of Pakistan in December 2024 and provided a deferred oil payment facility of approximately $1.2 billion in 2025. Riyadh has pledged significant investments in mining, agriculture, and IT, with potential plans totalling $5- $ 25 billion.

The UAE rolled over a $2 billion loan in early 2025 and committed to investing billions in Pakistan’s energy, port operations, and wastewater treatment sectors, targeting $10-25 billion.

Qatar signed a protocol to realize $3 billion in investments, focusing on aviation, agriculture, and hospitality, and is a key energy supplier, particularly for LNG.

These countries are crucial for Pakistan’s economic stability, with investments and aid flowing through frameworks like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

Sharif also raised concerns about rising poverty and unemployment, and lamented the lack of development in R&D and innovation.

Pakistan is facing a severe socioeconomic crisis with poverty rates estimated to have risen towards 45% of the population, exacerbated by inflation and floods. Unemployment has climbed to around 7.1%, with over eight million citizens jobless, while exports remain heavily reliant on textiles and commodities.

Recent estimates suggest up to 45% of Pakistan’s population lives below the poverty line, up from 21.9% in 2018. Extreme poverty has jumped from 4.9% to 16.5%, driven by 2022 floods, inflation, and macroeconomic instability.

The jobless rate is at 7.1%, with over 8 million people out of work. Educated youth are struggling, and underemployment is rampant in the informal sector (85% of the workforce).

Pakistan’s exports are stuck, with textiles dominating. There’s potential in software, agriculture, and livestock, but structural issues and low productivity hinder growth.

Notably, Pakistan is currently facing a severe debt crisis, with total public debt exceeding Rs 76,000 billion as of March 2025, nearly doubling in just four years. The nation relies heavily on IMF bailouts and loans from China–particularly for China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects–to manage debt servicing and avoid default.

Pak PM’s admission confirms a structural fragility that has moved beyond mere economic cycles into what many call a permanent state of crisis.

Historically, Pakistani leadership framed foreign aid as “strategic partnership” or “brotherly support.” However, Pakistan’s traditional “geopolitical rent”–the ability to trade its geography for cash (used effectively during the Cold War and the War on Terror)–has largely evaporated.

By involving the Army Chief in loan negotiations, the country is signalling to creditors that the military (the only institution perceived as stable) guarantees the debt, further blurring the lines of civilian governance.

Instead of building an export-oriented economy like Vietnam or Bangladesh, Pakistan has used borrowed “hot money” to maintain artificial exchange rates and fund imports for the elite.

Moreover, Pakistan is currently on its 23rd IMF program. Without structural reforms (such as taxing the landed elite and the retail sector), each loan merely covers the interest on the previous one.

Adding to the irony, Pakistan has reportedly paid a massive sum to secure a seat on Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, raising questions about priorities, spending significant resources to secure influence within high-level political circles “Board of Peace” highlight a massive cognitive dissonance in Islamabad.

While the public struggles with record-breaking inflation and energy shortages, the state continues to invest in “perception management” and lobbying. (ANI)

‘CM Fadnavis Will Make Decision On Deputy CM Post’: NCP State Chief Sunil Tatkare

NCP Maharashtra State President Sunil Tatkare on Saturday refused to comment on NCP (SCP) chief Sharad Pawar’s remarks stating that he had no information about NCP MP and Ajit Pawar’s widow Sunetra Pawar being pitched for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

Speaking to reporters, Tatkare said that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will make the final decision on the Deputy Chief Minister post, which fell vacant after Ajit Pawar’s demise.

He said, “I don’t have anything to say on this matter right now. We have a meeting, and after the meeting, we will discuss all these issues.”

“We have a meeting this afternoon. After the meeting, we will meet with the Chief Minister. After the meeting with the Chief Minister, we will present our views to him, and then the Chief Minister will make a decision on it. We will discuss all these things later,” the NCP leader added.

NCP is scheduled to hold a meeting this afternoon, after which the party will submit the name for the Deputy CM post.

Sharad Pawar said he has no information about NCP MP Sunetra Pawar’s name being proposed for the post of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister.

He said, “I have no information about it (Sunetra Pawar’s name for the Deputy CM post). Her party must have decided. What I saw in the newspaper today: some names like Praful Patel and Sunil Tatakare who have taken the initiative to make some decisions.”

Ajit Pawar, 66, died in a plane crash along with four others on Wednesday, after which his wife Sunetra Pawar is speculated to take up the vacant Deputy CM post. Maharashtra Minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal said that the party has pitched Sunetra Pawar’s name and asked CM Devendra Fadnavis if the swearing-in ceremony can take place today.

When asked about the haste to make political decisions immediately after Ajit Pawar’s death, Sharad Pawar hinted that the decisions were being made by leaders in the Mahayuti government in Mumbai.

“If there is a problem in the family, the family stands together. There are no issues in the family… All these discussions are not taking place here; they are happening in Mumbai. Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, and other senior leaders are having these discussions. Whatever is being seen appears to be decisions taken by them. I will not comment on this,” he said.

Earlier today, NCP spokesperson Rupali Patil Thombare said that Sunetra Pawar is set to take oath as the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday.

Speaking to ANI, Rupali Patil Thombare said party leaders had urged Sunetra Pawar to decide on the Deputy CM post and emphasised the importance of timing in politics.

Thombare said, “Ajit dada’s death was very shocking. He is not with us anymore. Sunetra Vahini (Sunetra Pawar) is grieving much more than all of us. She lost her husband all of a sudden. This is the fourth day since his death. We, the workers, have urged Vahini to forget her pain and adopt Ajit Dada’s dreams and work style. For this, she has made a decision for today; she had to.”

“Timing is very important in politics. People will talk. Those who are speaking for him today used to comment on him when he was alive. Vahini is going to take oath as the Deputy CM today,” the NCP Spokesperson said. (ANI)

PM Modi To Cisit Punjab On Feb 1, Rename Adampur Airport After Guru Ravidas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on February 1 (Sunday).

As per the offical release, at around 3:45 PM, the Prime Minister will visit Adampur airport, where he will unveil the new name of the Airport as ‘Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, Adampur. He will also inaugurate the Terminal Building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana, Punjab.

On the occasion of the 649th Birth Anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji, the renaming of Adampur Airport honours the revered saint and social reformer whose teachings of equality, compassion, and human dignity continue to inspire India’s social ethos.

Further advancing aviation infrastructure in the state, the Terminal Building, to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister at Halwara Airport, will establish a new gateway for the State, serving Ludhiana and its surrounding industrial and agricultural hinterland. Located in the Ludhiana district, Halwara is also home to a strategically important Indian Air Force station.

The earlier airport at Ludhiana had a relatively small runway, suitable for small-size aircrafts. To improve connectivity and accommodate larger aircraft, a new civil enclave has been developed at Halwara, which has a longer runway capable of handling A320-type aircraft.

Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of sustainable and environmentally responsible development, the terminal incorporates several green and energy-efficient features, including LED lighting, insulated roofing, rainwater harvesting systems, sewage and water treatment plants, and the use of recycled water for landscaping.

The architectural design reflects Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, offering passengers a distinctive and regionally inspired travel experience.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab President Sunil Jakhar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dera Ballan on February 1, calling it a significant visit that reflects the Prime Minister’s respect for Guru Ravidas and the sentiments of the people of Punjab.

Jakhar said the Prime Minister’s visit is taking place on a special day when the Union Budget is also being presented, underscoring the importance the Prime Minister attaches to faith and reverence. He described the visit as a message of affection and respect for Punjab and urged leaders of other political parties not to view it through a political lens.

He urged that the Prime Minister’s visit be viewed through the lens of faith, reverence, and respect, rather than political gain. Jakhar said that the renaming of Adampur Airport as Guru Ravidas Airport had already been announced, and the Prime Minister will now formally implement it during his visit. He added that Prime Minister Modi will also visit the Dera and pay his respects there.

According to Jakhar, the move reflects respect for a community which, he claimed, was sidelined or misunderstood by the Congress, and should be seen as an inclusive gesture towards society as a whole. (ANI)

NIA Takes Over Beldanga Violence Case, Begins Probe

The National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe into the violent unrest that shook Beldanga in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after the death of a migrant worker.

The agency took over the case after almost 14 days from the West Bengal Police on Friday, following orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs, considering the gravity of the case.

Violence erupted at Beldanga in Murshidabad district on January 16 over the death of the 30-year-old migrant worker Alauddin Sheikh.

The post-mortem report of the deceased migrant worker, as well as the investigation by Murshidabad police, had ruled out murder or any foul play.

A large number of people took to the streets by blocking railway tracks and the national highway for several hours.

After the death, a sub-inspector of Murshidabad police went to Palamau, Jharkhand, to inquire into the death of Sheikh. “Statements of 8-10 Bengali migrant labourers residing in the area were also recorded. However, they did not point out any conspiracy of murder,” the Murshidabad district police said in a statement on January 24, 2026.

The incident triggered a political slugfest in West Bengal with the Trinamool Congress leadership describing the death as a targeted attack on migrant workers in other states. Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had reached out to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemanta Soren over the death and urged him to ensure a swift investigation into the case.

The BJP, however, said that the violence in Beldanga was pre-planned. BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on social media saying the riots in Murshidabad’s Beldanga were not spontaneous and were politically convenient.

The father of the deceased migrant worker also refused to accept that his son had died of suicide and claimed that there were injuries on the body.

The police also added that it recorded the statement of Kasim Shaikh, who had brought down the body from the ceiling fan in Jharkhand. He also did not make a statement indicating murder or foul play. The post-mortem report also added that the cause of death was “ante-mortem hanging. No antemortem injuries. No abrasions, bruises, fractures or signs of assault”.(ANI)

Social Media: A Silent Revolution!

And two dead, left to die on snow-filled streets
Alex Pretti and Renee Good
Chorus
Oh, our Minneapolis, I hear your voice
Singing through the bloody mist
We’ll take our stand for this land
And the stranger in our midst
Here in our home, they killed and roamed
In the winter of ’26
We’ll remember the names of those who died
On the streets of Minneapolis
Bruce Springsteen, song released on January28, 2025

There is a silent revolution going on in the digital/social media. And it is getting serious.

Certainly, it is changing the world of images, sound and text rapidly, in slow motion. Including in India, though, we are still slow to catch up, But we will, eventually, given the state of our stooge media.

The Unnao bail case, indeed, was the last straw. A bahubali rapist and murderer, a BJP MLA, was allowed to be free. Activist Yogita Bhayana, comrade of the survivor and her mother, yet again organized a non-violent campaign on the streets with students and civil society groups, plus a social media campaign so effective that it touched the deepest chord of the nation. (Check her Instagram page.)

The protests against the Ankita Bhandari murder erupted yet again, with the name of a powerful BJP leader popping up, and we could see in distant Rudrapur in the hills, huge torchlight processions on the night streets. The short clip, unwinding on the streets, with its ‘flickering ‘mashaals’, is hypnotic, it lingers in the mind.

Social media was yet again the vanguard when a MBA student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, was murdered in what was a racist hate crime in Deharadun. With Uttarakhand as the new hate lab, eEarlier Kashmiris were hounded, now they seem to have shifted their gaze to people whom they brand so derogatorily as chinky, chowmein and momo.

The Northeast erupted. Girls from the region made videos singing songs of dissent, telling us in the North, what were the last words of Angel: “I am an Indian.”

In Indore, the cleanest city in India, a reporter, doing his job, asked the minister about the deaths of children and others due to water contamination; his response: Ghanta!

Hence, ghanta went viral.

The minister had to face the wrath of the social media. From ground reporting to digital engagement, a new language of journalism is being resurrected.

From Gaza to Minneapolis, this stream of consciousness spreads like wildfire. The conformist media is so astounded, that it has started toeing the mass-line, making short, catchy clips.

Meanwhile, on the song, ‘Streets of Minnapolis’, the singer said: “I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbours and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Stay free, Bruce Springsteen,” he said on his website.

The social media is up in flames –with its one-minute plus videos recorded on high resolution smart phones, live or edited, documented by many citizens at the same time, thereby getting multiple angles to the event; plus there are short reports and analysis,  unknown poetry by unknown poets, all kinds of music – satire, caricature, anti-establishment, rap, pop, parody, songs in many languages, pages from literature and history, including blacked out or re-written history such as those of slave ships from Africa, photo stories from great photographers, news bulletins with running images, mostly by non-journalists, and expert commentary by people who are not experts. Many of them acquire a huge following.

Earlier it was the genocide in Gaza, including the huge students’ and civil society protests in the West. Now, it is the mass, peaceful resistance in Minneapolis, where the people voted against Trump, and, hence, the presumed crackdown.

So what is the difference, I asked a scholar-columnist based in London – will it lead to a civil war in America?

“No”, he said. “They are carrying on the impunity from Gaza.”

That is, they think they can do anything and get away. That is, they have underestimated the power of the people — unprecedented waves of resistance on the streets against the genocide, all of it recorded in recent memory, lessons of life and rebellion that simply refuse to go away. History repeats. Hence, several cities like Chicago, Boston and New York have exploded in angst and anger, in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis – against Trump’s ICE. On January 30, there was a National Shutdown: no school, no work, no shopping. Several unions backed the shutdown.

“Domestic terrorist” is the term used by the Trump administration against the peaceful protesters blowing whistles and holding mobile cameras in their hands. Predictably, Trump has now retreated. The ICE chief has been transferred. The new chief seems conciliatory. And certain top aids of Trump might be in deep trouble given the widespread anger against them across the country.

The whistle has become the symbol of resistance, the camera a weapon of digital evidence, recording the cinema of live resistance in the face of an armed, masked, brutal force — as was the stone and two-string sling-shot in Palestine, or the underground guerilla camera inside the inaccessible terrain of Latin American dictatorships propped up by the US.

Renee Good, a mother of three, and Alex Petty, a nurse at the ICU for veterans, both 37, were murdered in quick succession on the streets in January. Both were peacefully filming the ICE, which has unleashed a wave of terror and barbarism: Breaking windows and doors of cars and homes, abducting people, one kid was kidnapped as bait to get his father, manhandling women in public places, dragging a  disabled woman from her car while she is screaming, “I am disabled, I am a US citizen”, pinning down a young girl who is crying:: “why are you doing this to me?”, dragging out a daycare female school teacher in front of terrified little children, beating the hell out of ordinary folks for no rhyme or reason.

These masked men, with unmarked cars and unknown locations of detention (where apparently hundreds are detained, including children, often no reason told), have unleashed a brutality which only invading armies do in enemy territories, treating American citizens with unimaginable savagery, even before they could show their identification papers.

Among others at a distance, a woman in a red jacket shot the murder of Alex at close range. He was actually trying to protect another woman from assault, when they picked on him. Within minutes, he was pinned down by armed men, beaten up, and shot at point blank range. The Trump administration said he was holding a gun. The video said, it was his mobile phone.

So who was the woman in a red jacket, shooting so close, herself aware that she could be the next target? Stella Carson.

California-based Sunil Adam, editor of amerikankahani.com, wrote in a social media post: “Watch Anderson Cooper’s interview with Stella Carlson who recorded the murder of Alex from just a few feet away. Her’s is truly a profile in courage and humanity. You can’t help tearing up along with her as she spoke. Here it is important to note that a vast majority of people of Minneapolis protesting are white, in defence of mostly non-white targets of deportations. One cannot but acknowledge that despite the obvious racism underlying the administration’s policies and actions, supported by at least half of the country, at the core of American heart is molten humanity.”

Stella Carlson in a red jacket, and other citizen-journalists, are the new brave icons and role models for the media, and the world. Sick of mainstream corporate media and its compromises, it’s high time the clichéd conformism of the five Ws and one H must change. This is because, a new, pulsating, social media journalism has been born – free and unafraid – and on the side of the people.

India Will Soon Close FTA With Chile: Piyush Goyal

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Friday said that India has signed eight Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in the past four years with developed countries, whose per capita GDP is significantly higher than India’s, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing the ICAI World Forum of Accountants in Greater Noida, Goyal said these FTAs cover all of Europe, including the 27-nation European Union and the four-nation EFTA.

He further said that India is likely to conclude an FTA with Chile soon, which would help secure critical minerals essential to the country’s growth and industrial needs.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister Goyal said, “We have signed eight free trade agreements in the past four years with developed countries whose per capita GDP is much higher than ours. These FTAs cover all of Europe, the 27-nation European Union, and the four-nation EFTA. All of these countries need talent, skills, and young people for their economies to survive, let alone grow. We are engaged in active dialogue with many other developed nations, with different benefits to the nation. We will soon close an FTA with Chile, which will open up critical minerals for India.”

In a post on X, Goyal said, “Truly delighted to be at the @TheICAI World Forum of Accountants in Greater Noida and address one of the largest gatherings of CAs. In my address at the event, I elaborated on India’s growth story, highlighting the various Free Trade Agreements entered into under the leadership of PM @NarendraModi ji.”

India and the European Union (EU) on Tuesday announced the conclusion of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), an important milestone in one of India’s most strategic economic partnerships. Designed as a modern, rules-based trade partnership, the FTA responds to contemporary global challenges while enabling deeper market integration between the world’s fourth and second largest economies.

With a combined market estimated at over Rs 2091.6 Lakh Crore (USD 24 trillion), bringing unparalleled opportunities for the 2 billion people of India and the EU, the FTA unlocks significant potential for trade and innovation. The FTA delivers unprecedented market access for more than 99% of India’s exports by trade value, while preserving policy space for sensitive sectors and reinforcing India’s developmental priorities. Alia’s Sis Shaheen Set To Produce Coming-Of-Age Rom Com ‘Don’t Be Shy’

On Friday, Prime Video took to Instagram to make the announcement with a fun video. The clip features the award-winning actress sharing her script selection process with her sister, Shaheen. It shows the duo growing tired of sifting through numerous action film scripts before finally choosing ‘Don’t Be Shy.’

Take a look

‘Don’t Be Shy’ follows the story of Shyamili ‘Shy’ Das, a 20-year-old woman who believes she has her life fully planned. Things change when her world takes an unexpected turn, and her carefully set ideas about love, friendship, and growing up are put to the test.
