Mega Protests Across Iran, Activists Call It A ‘Revolution’; Regime Blames US For Trouble

Anti-government protests in Iran have continued for the fourteenth consecutive day on Saturday, with authorities tightening security measures as demonstrations spread across multiple cities.

According to think tank the Institute for the study of war, “Protest activity has continued to take place across Iran amid the Iranian regime’s continued nationwide internet shutdown. CTP-ISW has recorded 60 protests across 15 provinces since 0000 local time on January 10, 25 of which were medium-sized and eight of which were large.”

“The Iranian regime has shifted from labelling protesters as “rioters” to describing them as “terrorists,” which signals that the regime has taken an uncompromising stance toward the ongoing protests. The regime will likely use its characterization of protesters as “terrorists” to justify further cracking down on the protests. The regime has killed hundreds of protesters and injured hundreds more in its violent crackdown on the protests,” the think tank further said in a post on X.

According to a CNN report, several people who protested in Iran spoke to the network of enormous crowds as well as brutal violence on the streets of Tehran. The report said that one woman had told CNN that she saw “bodies piled up on each other” in a hospital.

The Iranian Khamenei regime has accused the United States of fuelling unrest, claiming that what began as peaceful protests were deliberately turned violent through foreign incitement, an act it said violates international norms, as per Press TV.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani wrote in a letter addressed to the United Nations saying that Washington bears direct responsibility for “riots and violent acts” in Iran.

He condemned the United States’ “illegal behaviour” and its coordination with Israel to interfere in the Islamic Republic’s internal affairs. Iravani said such interference is carried out through “threats, incitement, and deliberate encouragement of violence,” to undermine Iran’s stability and security.

However, the violent crackdown has not deterred the protestors. Journalist and activist Masih Alinejad claimed in a post on X that hundreds had been killed and called for more support from the World for the protestors.

“Removing these terrorists who ordered the massacre of unarmed people is not a tragedy. It is justice. My brothers and sisters were shot in the chest, in the heart, for demanding freedom. Sources inside Iran say hundreds have been killed. This is a war against unarmed people and they need the world’s support,” she posted on X.

In another post she said, “This is not a protest. It is a revolution. Yes, Iran is looking at FREEDOM. January 2026 Iran.”

Earlier, reacting to the protests, US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (local time) that the United States is prepared to support the Iranian people. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Iran is witnessing a renewed push for freedom and said Washington stands ready to help.”

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed strong support for the protesters, condemning the Iranian authorities’ response. In a post on X, she wrote, “Tehran’s streets, and cities around the world, echo with the footsteps of Iranian women and men demanding freedom. Freedom to speak, to gather, to travel and above all to live freely.”

She asserted that Europe stands firmly with the protesters, adding, “We unequivocally condemn the violent repression of these legitimate demonstrations.” (ANI)

According to a report in the New York Times the US President Donald Trump has been briefed in recent days on a range of military options targeting Iran.

According to the report, the options presented to Trump include targeted strikes on select sites in Tehran, including non-military infrastructure linked to the regime’s internal security apparatus. Kerala: Crime Branch Arrests Expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil In Rape Case

The Kerala Police Crime Branch has arrested expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in connection with an alleged rape case, following a fresh complaint filed against him.

Police said the Palakkad MLA was taken into custody from a hotel in Palakkad late on Saturday night and was later brought to the AR Camp in Pathanamthitta for questioning.

After interrogation, he will be produced before the Thiruvalla Judicial Magistrate’s Court.

On December 12, the investigation into the first alleged rape case against Mamkootathil was transferred to the State Police Crime Branch following an official order. The case was earlier handled by the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner.

With the transfer, both rape cases registered against the expelled Congress MLA are now being supervised by Assistant Inspector General of Police Poonguzhali, who was already heading the probe into the second case.

Police have registered the case based on a complaint by a woman who alleged sexual assault, rape on the promise of marriage and forced abortion.

The First Information Report (FIR) was initially registered at the Nedumangad Valiyamala Police Station and later transferred to the Nemom Police Station, as the alleged incidents occurred within its jurisdiction.

Earlier, on December 6, the Kerala High Court had stayed Mamkootathil’s arrest while considering his anticipatory bail plea. A bench led by Justice K Babu directed that detailed arguments would be heard, and the matter was scheduled for further hearing on December 15.

Mamkootathil approached the High Court after the Thiruvananthapuram Principal Sessions Court rejected his anticipatory bail application.

The case registered against him includes multiple non-bailable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These include Section 64 for rape, Section 64(2) for repeatedly committing rape on the same woman, Section 64(f) for rape by a person in a position of trust, Section 64(h) for rape on a woman knowing she is pregnant and Section 64(m) for repeated rape. The case also includes Section 89 of the BNS for causing miscarriage without a woman’s consent, Section 316 for criminal breach of trust, and Section 68(e) of the Information Technology Act for transmission of offensive digital content.

The offences cumulatively carry punishments ranging from ten years to life imprisonment. (ANI)

X Admits Mistake, Says Will Follow Indian Laws On AI Use; Blocks Obscene Content: Sources

Social media platform X has accepted its mistake and acknowledged lapses in its content moderation standards and conveyed to the Indian Government that it will fully comply with the Indian law and operate in accordance with regulations, government sources said.

The issue came to light after concerns were raised over the circulation of obscene and sexually explicit content on the platform, including material allegedly generated or amplified through its Artificial Intelligence tool, Grok.

According to the government sources, around 3,500 pieces of obscene content have been blocked, and over 600 accounts have been deleted. The platform has also assured that it will not allow obscene imagery going forward.

Last week Ministry of Electronics and Infromation Technology (MeitY) sent a notice to Chief Compliance Officer of X Corp (Formerly Twitter), India Operations and sought a detailed action taken report within 72 hours towards immediate Compliance or prevention of hosting, generation, publication, transmission, sharing or uploading of obscene, nude, indecent and sexually explicit content through the misuse of AI based services like Grok and x AI’s other services.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticised the social media platform X for restricting problematic and sexualised image generation through Grok only to paid users instead of stopping it altogether.

In her X post, she alleged that the move effectively allows unauthorised misuse of images of women and children, putting them at risk. She said the platform appears to be monetising reprehensible behaviour under the guise of creativity and innovation, calling it a ‘shameful use of AI.’

“It is unfortunate to see how, instead of altogether stopping problematic, sexualised image generation through Grok, the platform has restricted its use to paid users. So if you show the platform the money, they won’t care about the guidelines or guardrails honey. This effectively means that women or children images can be up for unauthorised misuse by perverts. This isn’t creating a safe space for women, but rather @XCorpIndia monetising this reprehensible pervert behaviour under the garb of creativity and innovation. Shameful use of AI,” she posted on X.

Earlier on January 1, Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, raising concerns over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence tools on social media platforms to post objectionable images of women using fake accounts.

She said such practices amount to a serious breach of women’s privacy and urged the Centre to take urgent steps to safeguard their rights.

In the letter, Chaturvedi wrote, “I wanted to bring to your urgent attention and urgent intervention on a new trend that has emerged on social media, especially on X, by misusing their Al Grok feature where men are using fake accounts to post women’s photos and pushing out prompts to Grok to minimise their clothing and sexualise them. It is not just limited to sharing photos through fake accounts, but are also targeting women who post their own photos. This is unacceptable and a gross misuse of an Al function.”

She further added, “What is worse is that Grok is enabling this behaviour by adhering to such requests. This is a breach of women’s right to privacy as well as unauthorised use of their pictures, which is not just unethical but also criminal.”

Priyanka Chaturvedi has further urged the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology to take decisive action against the social media platform X and to implement safeguards in AI-driven tools to ensure women’s safety online. (ANI)

Gujarat: PM Modi Plays Conch During Shaurya Yatra In Somnath

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday participated in a ‘Shaurya Yatra’ at Somnath as part of the four-day-long national commemoration celebrating 1000 years of unbroken faith and resilience since the first recorded attack on the Somnath Temple in January 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni.

Visuals from the event showed the Prime Minister standing in an open vehicle decorated with flowers. He was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

During the procession, the Prime Minister played the conch and acknowledged the greetings of the gathered crowd.

The ‘Shaurya Yatra’ is a symbolic procession organised as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv. It represents courage, sacrifice and the indomitable spirit that preserved Somnath through centuries of adversity.

Ahead of the yatra, 108 horses of the Gujarat Police Mounted Unit arrived to participate in the event.

DIG Rajendrasinh Chudasama stated that the procession featured horses from the mounted unit, comprising locally bred Kathiawadi and Marwadi breeds. He added that the horses had undergone eight months of training specifically for the Shaurya Yatra.

“Shaurya Yatra is being organised in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and 108 horses of the Gujarat Mounted Unit will be participating in it. The unit consists of Kathiawadi and Marwadi horses and are locally bred… The horses have been trained for the Shaurya Yatra for eight months,” he told ANI.

Several saints, seers and children were present to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sanjay Brahmbhatt of Brahmarshi Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Gujarat’s Kheda said that approximately 350 students from the institution will participate in the Shaurya Yatra.

“We have come from Nadiad in Kheda district. We are from Brahmarshi Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, and Dahyabhai Shastri is with us, along with all his students. Around 350 students have come here, and all of us will take part in the Shaurya Yatra. Our children will play the conch (shankh) and damru, and we will lead the procession ahead of the horses,” he told ANI.

Somnath Swabhiman Parv, held from January 8 to January 11, 2026, marks the 1,000th anniversary of Mahmud of Ghazni’s first attack on the Somnath Temple in 1026.

The attack marked the beginning of a long period during which the temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over centuries. Despite this, Somnath never ceased to exist in the collective consciousness of the people. The cycle of the temple’s devastation and revival is unparalleled in world history. It demonstrated that Somnath was never merely a stone structure, but a living embodiment of belief, identity, and civilisational pride.

On Kartak Sud 1, Diwali day, November 12, 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the ruins of Somnath and expressed his resolve to rebuild the temple, viewing its restoration as essential to reviving India’s cultural confidence. The reconstruction, carried out with public participation, culminated in the consecration of the present temple on May 11, 1951, in the presence of then-President Rajendra Prasad.

In 2026, the nation marks 75 years since the historic 1951 ceremony, reaffirming India’s civilisational self-respect. Revered as the first among the 12 Aadi Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the Somnath Temple complex stands majestically along the Arabian Sea, crowned by a 150-foot shikhar, symbolising enduring faith and national resolve. Outrage Erupts After Chinese Tourist Caught Desecrating Sacred Objects In Tibetan Monastery

A widely shared video on Chinese social media has sparked intense outrage among Tibetans both inside Tibet and in exile after it showed a Chinese tourist desecrating sacred items inside a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, according to a report by Phayul.

The viral footage shows the tourist drinking liquid directly from a shrine altar before pouring the remaining drink into a butter lamp, an action Tibetans say represents a grave violation of religious sanctity and cultural values. Tibetans online condemned the act as far more than mere disrespect, calling it a “shameless provocation” and a “direct insult,” while stressing that monasteries are holy spaces and not places for tourists seeking publicity or social media attention, Phayul reported.

“Monasteries are not platforms for tourists to perform for attention,” a Tibetan social media user wrote, urging judicial authorities and cyber police to take strong action against behaviour they believe threatens social stability and national unity. The Tibetan commenter stressed that the act cannot be dismissed as ignorance. “It’s not about misunderstanding the rules. This isn’t ordinary disrespect. It is humiliating. This is an open provocation,” the user stated. “Cultural boundaries cannot be violated. I hope relevant authorities investigate thoroughly.”

He further added that such conduct insults not only Tibetan religion and culture but also other visitors who genuinely respect Tibet. “Your actions are not only disrespectful toward Tibetan culture; they offend everyone who visits Tibet with sincerity,” he said. Prominent Tibetan writer and poet Tsering Woeser also commented on the incident, linking such behaviour to what she described as prolonged tolerance by authorities toward tourists’ misconduct in Tibet, Phayul reported.

“The shocking behaviour of tourists is the direct outcome of long-standing leniency,” Tsering wrote on X. She explained that with “cultural tourism” promoted as one of Tibet’s primary industries, tourists have gradually become “untouchable figures,” while incidents violating Tibetan beliefs and traditions continue to increase. “We are exhausted,” she wrote. “These serious incidents keep happening because local authorities deliberately ignore them. As a result, increasingly outrageous behaviour goes almost unpunished, while Tibetans who suffer are left with anger and rarely receive justice,” Phayul quoted.

Bhuchung K. Tsering, Head of the Research and Monitoring Unit at the Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), also expressed concern about the lack of official reaction. “A video of a Chinese tourist drinking an offering at a #Tibetan monastery and then desecrating a butter lamp by pouring the leftovers inside is circulating on Chinese social media,” Bhuchung posted on X. “Yet there is still no indication of any action by Chinese authorities, whose censors are usually highly active,” Phayul reported.
