‘16.12 Cr People Lost Their Jobs’: Siddaramiah At ‘MGNREGA Bachao’ Protest

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah on Monday expressed serious concern over the impact of discontinuation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, claiming that nearly 16.12 crore people have lost their jobs, of whom 53 per cent are women and 28 per cent belong to the Scheduled Castes community.

Addressing the “MGNREGA Bachao” protest in Chikkaballapur, the Chief Minister emphasised that the scheme had earlier guaranteed 100 days of wage employment to rural labourers and supported the operations of Gram Panchayats.

He alleged that the discontinuation of MGNREGA has adversely affected rural livelihoods and left Gram Panchayats without adequate work. Stressing the importance of the scheme, Siddaramaiah said that protecting it has become extremely essential to safeguard the right to employment of rural workers.

The Chief Minister demanded that the current framework replacing MGNREGA be completely halted and the original scheme be reinstated, restoring what he termed as the people’s right to guaranteed employment.

Furthermore, he urged the government to fix a minimum wage of Rs 400 per day under the scheme. Siddaramaiah also asserted that the protest would continue until MGNREGA is fully restored and employment security for rural workers is ensured.

Many Congress leaders across the country are demanding the restoration of the MGNREGA Act.

In Jammu district, for instance, party leaders staged a protest against the discontinuation of the Act, labelling it a “BJP conspiracy.” The demonstration was led by Congress MP Dr. Syed Naseer, who accused the ruling party of undermining the employment rights of rural workers.

Speaking to the media, Naseer emphasised that the protest is a move to safeguard the right to work for labourers.

“This protest is being held against the BJP’s conspiracy of ending the MGNREGA and to protect the right to work given to the labourers,” he stated.

He emphasised that the demonstration aimed to safeguard the livelihoods of rural residents who depend on guaranteed employment.

Meanwhile, the protests against the discontinuation of MGNREGA began after Parliament passed the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act during the Winter Session. This new legislation replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act as India’s flagship rural employment scheme.

While the Act increases guaranteed workdays from 100 to 125, the Opposition has criticised the move for removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name and altering the 60:40 funding share between the Centre and states.

As a result, Congress has been organising nationwide protests against these changes.

On February 17, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai announced that the party workers will lay a siege to the State Assembly to raise issues such as the renaming of the Act and market demolitions.

Speaking to ANI, Rai said that the party workers have come from all parts of the state, and will lay a siege together at the Legislative Assembly.

“Our workers have come from different districts… Everyone has been sleeping in the State Committee office all night, including me… workers from all over the state. We will lay siege to the assembly in large numbers today. the workers’ wages that the government has withheld for the past 11-12 months, the government’s plan to scrap MGNREGA, the insult to women, workers, Shankaracharya, and Mata Ahilyabai Holkar, demolishing markets, ruining markets like the Dal Mandi… And then give all the land to the people from Gujarat… We will lay siege to the assembly on all these issues and will oppose it strongly…” he stated. Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Denies POCSO Allegations

Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, on Monday, termed the POCSO Act case against him a “tactic” by the government to divert attention from the demand of ban on cow slaughter.

Speaking to ANI, Swami Avimukteshwaranand accused the government of “attacking” the Shankracharyas.

He further said that the other accused in the alleged POCSO case were not linked to his Gurukul.

The religious leader said, “We meet the public from time to time. This government wants that we should be both the religious leaders and the government. There are four Shankaracharyas in the country who have always protected Sanatan Dharma. Now they have started attacking them. Truth never ends; it always remains. The voice has been raised for the ban on cow slaughter, and we will continue to raise this voice even louder. These people want to divert the attention of the public to something else.”

“The people of the country want cows to be protected. By meeting the Shankaracharyas of all four Peeths, we are running this movement for the protection of Mother cow.”

“The students who are being talked about are not from our Gurukul,” he added.

Earlier today, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrived at the residence of Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati to arrest him in an alleged sexual assault case.

Speaking to mediapersons, the Swami said that he will not oppose the police in any way and will cooperate with them.

“We will not oppose the police in any way; we will cooperate with them. Whatever the police do, the public is watching everything. Look, for us there are three courts. One is the lower court, one is the middle court, and one is the Supreme Court. The lower court is the public — the people are watching everything, and they are the ones who will give the verdict. The middle court is our own conscience — we know within our hearts whether we are wrong or not. And the third is God, the Supreme Court — He is also watching who is wrong and who is right. So in such a situation, we have a clean chit from all three courts,” Swami Avimukteshwaranand told reporters.

Denying all allegations against him, he demanded that the CCTV footage and the purported CD to be made public.

The religious leader said, “The lies are eventually exposed. The story will be proven false, if not today, then tomorrow, if not tomorrow, then the day after. We were within the reach of your cameras. CCTV cameras are installed everywhere in Prayagraj. They had installed them everywhere so that if anything happens, they can monitor it from the war room, and they will have everything recorded. Our bus wasn’t parked inside our camp, because after the police brutality against us, we didn’t enter the camp. So, in this situation, everything is captured by CCTV. Those boys never entered our Gurukul, never studied, and we have nothing to do with them. They are students of a school in Hardoi, as evidenced by their marksheets submitted in the lawsuit.”

“So, when they never came here, and have nothing to do with this place, how can anyone do anything to them? And thirdly, they are spreading confusion by saying, ‘There’s a CD’ so why isn’t it being made public? These are all questions that will be asked in the coming days, and they will have to answer them,” he added.

An FIR lodged at Jhunsi police station against Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, his disciple Mukundanand Brahmachari, and others following directions from a Special Court under the POCSO Act.

The FIR has been filed under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 3, 4(2), 6, 16, 17 and 51 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The allegations relate to incidents said to have occurred between January 13, 2025 and February 15, 2026. The complaint contains serious charges concerning sexual offences involving minors.

Special Judge (POCSO) Vinod Kumar Chaurasi, after hearing a petition filed by Ashutosh Brahmachari, observed that the material on record disclosed cognisable and punishable offences under the relevant laws. The court directed the SHO of Jhunsi police station to register the FIR without delay and proceed in accordance with the law. (ANI)

TVK Chief Vijay: TN’s People Like ‘Flesh & Blood’

Describing his relationship with Tamil Nadu people as akin to “flesh and blood,” Tamilaga Vettri Kazagham chief Vijay on Monday said that all parties seem to have joined hands to fight against him in the Assembly elections, set to be held later in the State.

Addressing a public rally in Vellore, the TVK chief stated that the upcoming polls will be “a battle against corruption” for the people of the State.

“This is like an election that comes once in 50 years. In this election, everyone has united to oppose Vijay. This is a war against corruption for the people of Tamil Nadu. Before entering politics, what were your assets? After entering politics, what are your assets? Let every politician answer this. If you insult me, it is like insulting the people. Vijay and the people are bound by blood and flesh,” Vijay said.

Highlighting governance issues, he pointed to the lack of basic facilities, including bus services and hospitals, in several hill villages. He criticised what he referred to as the ruling DMK government’s “Be Safe Model,” claiming that women presently feel it is a “We Are Not Safe Model.” The TVK chief assured that under his party’s government, law and order would be strengthened and women, men, and children would live safely.

Vijay also accused the DMK-led government of running a “fake model” administration in Tamil Nadu and also mocked them as “stand-up comedy.”

Addressing a public rally in Vellore, Vijay said that the political fight in the State was between the TVK and DMK. Emphasising that “Tamil Nadu is Vijay, Vijay is Tamil Nadu”, the TVK leader drew reference from the famous remarks from ex-Assam Chief Minister DK Baroah, in which he had said “India is Indira, Indira is India”, hailing the politcal legacy of former India Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“In the Tamil Nadu elections, the competition is between Vijay and Stalin Sir. Tamil Nadu is Vijay, Vijay is Tamil Nadu. The war is between TVK and DMK. Today, there is a fake model government. A stand-up comedy state government is currently ruling in Tamil Nadu. This election will be a historic election, and it’s a miracle election,” Vijay said.

The actor-turned politician further urged people to vote for TVK’s party symbol, “whistle”, adding that no one can snatch the right of the people away from them. Vijay also accused Chief Minister MK Stalin of making fake promises, vowing that once his party forms government in the State, he would meet every citizen in the state personally

“MK Stalin has given fake promises and is cheating people. After we (TVK) form a government in Tamil Nadu, I will personally meet everyone and go to every district and meet my people. This election is with the Tamil Nadu people and against the DMK government. The competition is between the Tamil Nadu people and Stalin sir. Our vote, our rights, no one can take away our votes. Our vote for the whistle symbol. We will never allow anyone to grab our votes, it’s true,” Vijay said.

Elections in Tamil Nadu are set to take place in the first half of this year, with the main battle between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham-led National Democratic Alliance. The SPA comprises of parties, including Congress, DMDK, and its alliance talks with MMK and MDMK are underway.

On the other hand, apart from AIADMK, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in the leading position in the NDA bloc, with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and several other parties part of the alliance.

Vijay, who retired from his acting career ahead of the elections, is making his debut in the political arena with his political outfit TVK. (ANI)

‘Delhi AI Summit Was A Bitter Experience For Visitors & Participants Alike’

Ajith Pillai, a seasoned journalist based in Chennai, says while AI cannot replace human intelligence it will be widely used as a ruse by companies to justify downsizing. His views:

The AI International Summit 2026 was an embarrassment for the government, especially given the hype surrounding the event. The arrangements were substandard. Social media reflects how visitors, who had paid, had a harrowing time. A stream of VVIP visitors hindered movement, and there were complaints about poor connectivity at the venue.

From what one gathers, the summit was organised to achieve two objectives: (a) to emphasise India’s position as a major player in the IT sector by showcasing its innovations; and (b) to roll out the red carpet for tech billionaires to invest in the AI sector in India. To achieve the second objective, the Union Budget had promised a 21-year tax holiday, till 2047, for foreign players investing in data centres in the country.

Remember, hyper-scale generative AI-compatible data centres are essential to support future generative AI innovation and training. That these data centres cause environmental damage and consume huge amounts of electricity and clean water was perhaps not given serious consideration. Neither were the widespread protests against such centres in the US, Europe, and Latin America.

Attracting foreign investment, which would reflect in higher GDP figures, was clearly the government’s sole priority. In any case, when was water scarcity for ordinary citizens and farmers a real concern?

Failing meet green objectives by burning additional fossil fuels to generate electricity has usually been dismissed as a topic for discussion only at carbon-emission seminars!

It is likely that the government will attract investment from Silicon Valley. One will hear of several new partnerships being forged with big Indian businesses. With a lucrative tax holiday and a supportive government, why won’t Big Tech find India attractive?

As for the first objective of showcasing local innovation, the Summit began on a farcical note that attracted much media attention. For reasons known to the organisers and the government, UP-based Galgotias University, better known for its political affiliation than its scientific tradition or research, was allotted a high-profile pavilion. It showcased a ₹350-crore AI ecosystem that it claimed had been developed by its faculty and students.

ALSO READ: Bureaucrat at AI Summit Dispels Fears of Job Loss

On display was a robodog, ‘Orion’, which was presented as a proprietary, “Made in India” creation developed at the University’s “Centre of Excellence”. But the claim was immediately contested by visitors who identified Orion as “Unitree Go2”, manufactured by the Chinese robotics company, Unitree. If that was not enough, a “soccer drone arena”, also on display as an original, was a Korean product, “Stryker V3 ARF”, available online.

Galgotias were asked to leave the Summit in shame, and their pavilion was sealed off. The robodog controversy became a joke, and cartoonists had a field day.

All said and done, the AI summit left a sour taste, although much of the mainstream media, predictably, has been declaring it as a resounding success.

Generative AI is the new buzzword in Silicon Valley. It is artificial intelligence designed to produce output that would normally require human intelligence by applying machine learning techniques to large datasets. It is supposed to work wonders and take over jobs that humans do.

But the jury is still out on this claim. Every time a new model comes out, the press is inundated with news of how doctors, artists, lawyers, journalists, designers, musicians, and what have you will lose their jobs. When Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.6, new models from Anthropic, were released earlier this month, reports surfaced that all white-collar jobs will be taken over by AI.

Later, feedback suggests that the latest crop of generative AI may not be as good as it is made out to be. In fact, a Microsoft study found that AI models in the market are not good at deciphering layered or complex commands as humans can.

So, jobs may not be lost on the scale as predicted, and AI may end up being a tool that assists humans. But it is widely used by companies to justify downsizing, spread fear among their workforce, and underpay their staff. One often hears of tech companies that over-hired post-COVID, jettisoning staff and blaming it on AI.

It is the dream of corporates to run companies on a skeletal staff to enhance profits. Also, the dream of techno overlords in Silicon Valley is ‘world domination’, and they think this is possible through AI, which they believe can render humans redundant.

International information arbitrage today is in the hands of a few players, such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft. Many of our big corporates would like to join that select club.

Does a country like India need generative AI? It perhaps does if it can improve the lives of ordinary folk. There is a school of thought that believes artificial intelligence can be beneficial across various areas. But for corporates, it is a way to exercise control over people and politicians. India, with a growing population of the unemployed, needs jobs. Tech that steals their livelihood cannot be seen as a positive by any reckoning.

To understand the business of data centres, one must understand what tech companies call the cloud. It is a network of remote, internet-accessible servers that store, manage, and process data.

The cloud exists physically, not in outer space, but in data centres located all over the world. It consists of networked computers, servers, and storage systems. These facilities are operated by providers like Google, Amazon, Microsoft. They store data and run applications, making them accessible via the internet. Almost all online companies depend on cloud providers for their operations.

Cloud is known as the new real estate. The more of it you own, the more powerful you are in a world dependent on the internet. So, the big players are keen to create their own cloud space.  Indian big business would also like a slice of the cloud and would be happy riding piggyback on Silicon Valley’s techno-feudal overloads, who are looking to set up more and more data centres to grab more of that cloud space.

Generative AI requires mega data centres with large-scale computational resources for generative AI training. Such centres must have super-efficient hardware components to be effective. These hyper-scale outfits are known to guzzle water and power, and can disrupt the electric supply, and can depress the water table in areas surrounding them. This is why there have been protests against them in the US, Europe, and Latin America. In the US alone, $98 billion worth of data centre projects were delayed or cancelled last year.

So, Big Tech had to find new pastures, and India is laying out the red carpet. The unfortunate part is that many of them might be located in water-deficient states like Rajasthan, parts of UP, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Data centres will initially be located near cities, but many fear they could soon move into the hinterland, where land is cheaper.

As for employment, much of the work related to data centres will be generated during the construction phase. Once it becomes functional, even a large data centre will require fewer than 200 permanent employees.

Opposition Rakes Up Sabarimala Issue In Kerala Assembly, Storms Into Well Of House

Opposition parties in the Kerala Assembly staged a protest against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government over the Sabarimala gold theft case on Monday.

The opposition MLAs stepped into the well and created a ruckus within the assembly. The protest follows the release of Sabarimala case accused Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru, on February 18, who walked out of the Poojappura Central Prison after securing bail from the Kollam Vigilance Court in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft case.

Rajeevaru was released after completing 41 days in judicial remand. The court granted him bail in cases alleging misappropriation of gold from the temple’s Dwarapalaka (guardian deity) sculptures and the Kattilappaali (door frame).

On January 9, Rajeevar, the Chief priest (Tantri) of Sabarimala, was arrested by the Crime Branch in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft case. He was questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), the Kerala police said.

The arrest was made after multiple charges, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, were levelled against him.

According to the arrest notice issued under Section 48 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the case pertains to alleged irregularities in the removal and handling of gold-plated copper panels and ornamental structures fixed on the sanctum sanctorum door of the Sabarimala temple.

The Sabarimala gold theft case concerns allegations of the misappropriation of approximately 4.54 kilograms of gold from sacred temple artefacts, including the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) door frames and Dwarapalaka idols. The theft allegedly occurred in 2019 under the pretext of refinishing and re-gold-plating temple structures.

The controversy traces its origins to a 1998 donation by industrialist Vijay Mallya, who donated 30.3 kilograms of gold and 1,900 kilograms of copper for gold plating and cladding at the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. Subsequent inspections and court-monitored inquiries revealed discrepancies between the donated gold and the quantity allegedly used. (ANI)

US-Iran Nuclear Talks To Be Held In Geneva On February 26

Fresh negotiations between the United States and Iran will be held in Geneva on Thursday, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi confirmed amid escalating tensions between the two countries.

“Pleased to confirm US-Iran negotiations are now set for Geneva this Thursday, with a positive push to go the extra mile towards finalising the deal,” Badr Al Busaidi said in a post on X.

The announcement comes as the United States continues to strengthen its military presence in the region, sparking concerns about a potential broader conflict with Iran.

The New York Times reported that hundreds of servicemen have been transferred from the Al Udeid base in Qatar, according to information provided by Pentagon officials.

Similar logistical shifts have been identified across a network of American facilities in Bahrain, the headquarters of the Navy’s 5th Fleet, as well as in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Government officials are reportedly apprehensive that the 30,000 to 40,000 US troops currently deployed within the region could serve as the primary target of the Islamic Republic in the event of an all-out war.

Military experts consulted on the matter suggested that such a confrontation would differ drastically from the strike on Al Udeid in June 2025, during which Iranian authorities provided the US with advance notice.

The Jerusalem Post highlighted a stern warning from the Iranian mission to the UN, which stated that, in case of an American attack, ”all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile force in the region would constitute legitimate targets.”

In light of these threats, the US is reportedly augmenting its regional posture by shifting air defence systems into the Middle East to safeguard its forces and interests.

This defensive buildup accompanies a decision to maintain two aircraft carriers at a significant distance from Iranian territory to ensure they do not become easy targets for retaliation.

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran to come to terms with the US on the nuclear deal within 10 to 15 days or “it’s going to be unfortunate.”

Interacting with the reporters on Thursday, the US President said, “We’re either going to get a deal, or it’s going to be unfortunate for them… 10-15 days would be enough time.” (ANI)

Indian Embassy Issues Advisory To Their Citizens In Mexico After Killing Of El Mencho

The Embassy of India in Mexico on Monday issued an advisory to Indian nationals residing in the North American country, urging them to exercise caution and shelter in place amid escalating violence following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel on Sunday

In a post on X, the Embassy mentions that Indian nationals in Jalisco State — particularly in the areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara — as well as in Tamaulipas State, including Reynosa and other municipalities, and certain areas of Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon, should remain indoors until further notice.

“Dear all Indian nationals in Mexico: There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, Indian nationals in Jalisco State (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should shelter in place until further notice,” the post read.

“Actions to Take: Avoid areas around law enforcement activity. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements outside your shelter. Monitor local media for updates. Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911. Avoid crowds. Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media,” the Embassy added in the post.

This comes after one of the most wanted leaders of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, was killed on Sunday following an operation led by Mexico’s military.

El Mencho, a former police officer, led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, as it became one of the “most powerful and ruthless criminal organisations” inside Mexico, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency, CNN reported.

Security forces from several federal branches of Mexico’s military carried out the operation in the town of Tapalpa in the western state of Jalisco.

CJNG members traded fire with the government forces, resulting in four gang members being killed at the scene, Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defence said.

Osegeura and two others were seriously injured and died as they were being transported via aircraft to Mexico City, according to the secretariat.

Three Mexican military personnel were also injured in the operation and transferred to a hospital in Mexico City for treatment.

The military operation triggered a series of violent events across the state of Jalisco, which is scheduled to host four matches of the 2026 World Cup in June, before spreading to other states such as Michoacan and Guanajuato.

Suspected members of organised crime groups set buses on fire, blocked roads in the area, and clashed with authorities, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro reported.

During the operation, Lemus urged residents to remain in their homes and said that public transportation services in Jalisco would be suspended “until the situation is under control.”

The governor stated that the violence has spread to at least five states and urged the public to avoid travelling on highways.

Oseguera was wanted by US authorities, who offered a bounty of up to USD 15 million for information leading to his arrest, CNN reported.

The US Justice Department charged El Mencho in 2022 with leading the effort to manufacture and distribute fentanyl for importation into the US.

A Justice Department indictment of Oseguera said his organisation is active in the Mexican states of Jalisco, Colima, and Veracruz, and has a presence elsewhere. (ANI)
