Red Star Over JNU

“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.”
—Jean-Paul Sartre

The spontaneous uprising comes in waves. It has its own seasons.

The Spring Revolution following the hard winter struggle.

Sometimes, it becomes all quiet on the JNU front for a while; we used to call it “the silence of the graveyard”. For reasons not difficult to comprehend, when a particular union becomes stagnant, conformist and compromised; or, repression is at its peak, and the relentless struggle experiences fatigue.

However, a movement in retreat is not a movement in retreat. It never gets defeated.

JNU will never be defeated. That is its restless, radical, revolutionary inheritance. It’s stream of consciousness. Its inner soul and existential realism. Its essence of freedom and its progressive politics.

I have always believed, a truly authentic movement is never defeated. It can never be defeated  — by not even the mightiest and most evil and vicious force on earth. A movement in retreat is not defeat. It’s merely a pause. The red star is waiting for the moonlit tide to rise. Then it will shine, the red star, and show the way.

As a Latin American wall writing said: The dawn is no longer an illusion.

Another long march has yet again begun in JNU. A new generation of brave, gutsy, resilient young minds with hearts full of passion and the quest for justice, fearless and free, are out on the streets, in this spring sunshine, in the sensuous nocturnal expanses, marching, singing, shouting slogans in chorus, holding hands and sparkling torchlights, walking through the February flowers and the majestic trees, in the lanes and bylanes between the hostels, women and men, defiant and daring to dream.

They hate JNU for its progressive and liberal ethos and inheritance, where you learn and unlearn in the classroom and outside the classroom, on the streets, in the library canteen, under the beautiful trees and the nocturnal rocks, on the stones outside the famous Ganga dhaba, in the corridors of the schools, in seminars, in the late night public discussions in packed hostel messes; you learn new visual narratives through fabulous world cinema on make-shift screens, surrounded by the kaleidoscopic landscape of posters and graffiti on the walls.

It’s secular enlightenment with critical thinking and debate and discussion as its scaffolding. Like the Rodin poster during our days in the 1980s which said: I might not  agree with you, but I will fight for your right to express.

Or the Sorbonne May ’68 slogan, written on the wall, during the rainbow students’ uprising in 1983 and 1989: Give Flowers to the Rebels who Failed!

They hate this essence of a campus whose heart beats with the margins all over the world, against injustice and inequality, for failed causes and victorious revolutions: Ho ho Ho Chi Minh… We shall fight we shall win…  The people united shall always be victorious… still resonating in the massive students’ movements in the campuses and streets of America and Europe.

Undoubtedly, this relentless struggle in the campuses of the West, against the genocide in Gaza, has now filtered into the great historical inheritance of JNU, telling us the story that all movements, through time and space, inspire each other, weave horizons of a collective symphony, touch each other’s soul, speak a language which only the young and the eclectic can understand.

As Che Guevara said: “Above all, try always to be able to feel deeply any injustice committed against any person in any part of the world. It is the most beautiful quality of a revolutionary.”

I would say, that is the most beautiful quality of a human being.

That is why they hate JNU.

This is because they neither have the quest for enlightenment, not the deep affinity with the history of struggles, of alliances with the poorest, workers and farmers, for women’s liberation and Dalit rights, for the liberation of humanity. That is why they did not join the freedom movement and chose to be lackeys of the British — when Bhagat Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan, Khudiram Bose, Sukhdev and Rajguru, among  other young brave hearts, the  greatest revolutionaries and martyrs of the freedom movement, were hanged – chasing freedom for India and its people.

That is why, all they have is hate politics. Ask them to fight for human rights and the rights of the poor, they will look the other way. They compulsively avoid sacrifices. They only flourish as parasites – under the protection of the State and the status quo.

And who is the current role model? War criminal, mass murderer, international pariah:  Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to preside over an ongoing genocide in Gaza.

After the first wave of repression in 2016 hounded JNU, with cooked up fake charges,  branding JNU anti-national etc, (which could never stick but did the damage anyway), and the long struggle with students jailed and ABVP goons let loose on the campus with apparent police protection, the unfinished circle has returned yet again. Hence, the red star has reappeared, between the graffiti and the slogans, shining bright, showing the way to the rainbow coalition.

This time led by a JNUSU, the students’ union, with three feisty, formidable, unafraid women leaders who are refusing to back down, come what may, leading from the front — the young vanguard of a young, glorious struggle.

What is the purpose of facial recognition surveillance in a campus where students celebrate their freedom with utmost responsibility, decency and dignity?

Where the library is packed till late in the night with students bent over their books, taking notes, writing tutorials? Where academics and former student leaders are now giving discourses to students in the open air? (I too was invited for the famous lecture series at the Freedom Square in 2016 and after). And it does not matter if you are from the School of International Studies or Social Sciences or Languages, students of JNU know it too well that knowledge is liberation. Even in the midst of a hard struggle.

I remember Jawaharlal Nehru’s words on the university prospectus when we first joined the campus as eclectic youngsters, which remains its ideal and idealism: “A university stands for humanism, for tolerance, for reason, for the adventure of ideas and for the search of truth. It stands for the onward march of the human race towards ever higher objectives.”

Guess who was the great actor and progressive thinker its founding father and the students invited for the first JNU convocation: Balraj Sahni. Since then, no convocation has been held, but, from Derrida to Chomsky, a spectrum of great thinkers, filmmakers, actors, writers and academics from India and all over the world have come to share their thoughts with eager students in packed halls and auditoriums. Former student leaders would join, carrying the torchlights of the past. This is the oral tradition of JNU which nourishes its soul, and its legacy of enlightenment and struggle.

One former vice-chancellor said, during the May 1983 students’ movement, when hundreds of students went to Tihar Jail: JNU students are not violent – they are argumentative.

Now, when they are detaining and arresting students for protesting peacefully, the students remain stoic and steadfast. The long march has just about started. And the journey is the destination.

Give flowers to the rebels… they are showing us the way…

Trump Warns Iranian Forces To Lay Down Their Arms And Surrender

US President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Iranian forces to lay down their arms and surrender, offering immunity, or face “certain death” after the Middle East plunged into a state of full-scale conflict as a combined military operation by Israel and the United States struck multiple targets across Iran.

In a televised address on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the launch of a military operation in Iran, targeting the country’s nuclear and military infrastructure.

“To the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and all of the police, I say tonight that you must lay down your weapons and have complete immunity, or, in the alternative, face certain death. So, lay down your arms, you will be treated fairly with total immunity, or you will face certain death,” he said.

Declaring that the “hour of your freedom is at hand,” Trump urged Iranian citizens to remain sheltered as “bombs will be dropping everywhere”. He framed the operation as a historic opportunity for the public to “take over” their government.

“Finally, to the great, proud people of Iran, I say tonight that the hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping everywhere. When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be, probably, your only chance for generations,” he said.

“For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it. No President was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight. Now you have a President who is giving you what you want. So let’s see how you respond. America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force…,” he added.

Trump said that the military action was a final necessity to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, asserting that it is the immutable policy of his administration that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon.”

“Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terror, and just recently killed tens of thousands of its own citizens on the street as they protested. It has always been the policy of the United States, in particular my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again, they can never have a nuclear weapon…,” he said.

Trump claimed that despite repeated attempts to reach a deal, Iran refused to renounce its nuclear ambitions and instead attempted to rebuild its program while developing long-range missiles capable of reaching Europe and the American homeland.

He accused Iran of being the world’s top state sponsor’s terror and developing nuclear weapons, despite repeated warnings from the US.

“We warned them never to resume their malicious pursuit of nuclear weapons, and we sought repeatedly to make a deal. We tried. They wanted to do it. They didn’t want to do it. Again, they wanted to do it. They didn’t want to do it. They didn’t know what was happening. They just wanted to practice evil. But Iran refused, just as it has for decades and decades. They rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions, and we can’t take it anymore. Instead, they attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and to continue developing long-range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas, and could soon reach the American homeland…,” he said.

Trump vowed to “annihilate” the Iranian Navy and dismantle the network of regional terrorist proxies. “For these reasons, the United States military has undertaken a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests…We’re going to annihilate their Navy. We’re going to ensure that the region’s terrorist proxies can no longer destabilise the region or the world…,” he said.

Israel and the US launched a joint military strike on Iran, codenamed Operation Roaring Lion, targeting military sites, missile production facilities, and areas near Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s office.

The name was decided upon by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after the IDF had a different internal name for the strikes, according to The Times of Israel.

Several ministries in southern Tehran were reportedly struck, and residents heard powerful blasts as tensions surged following a pre-emptive military strike by Israel, which reportedly targeted multiple sites, including in the capital.

Iranian officials vowed a “crushing response,” warning of strong retaliation against perceived aggression. The situation has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, with emergency measures and public anxiety spreading as developments continue to unfold.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday confirmed a short while ago that missiles had been launched from Iran toward Israeli territory following a joint US-Israeli “pre-emptive” strike on Iranian territory.

According to the IDF, defensive systems were immediately activated to intercept the incoming threat, underscoring Israel’s layered missile defence capabilities.

The Home Front Command has issued precautionary directives via mobile phone alerts to citizens in affected areas, instructing them to seek immediate shelter.

Mobile phone lines have been cut in parts of eastern and western Tehran, and internet connectivity has weakened in some areas, as per Iranian Media reports.

This direct strike follows weeks of high-stakes nuclear negotiations and mounting military posturing in the region. While the full scope and impact of the strike are still being assessed, the launch signals a significant retaliatory move in the broader confrontation between the two countries. (ANI)

‘Terrorist Regime Must Not Be Allowed To Arm Itself,’ Says Netanyahu As US Israel Strike Iran

In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, Israel and the United States have initiated a joint operation aimed at neutralizing what they describe as the existential threat posed by Iran.

In a public address to the nation, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu underscored the long-standing hostility of the Iranian regime, framing the move as both defensive and strategic.

“My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, just an hour ago, Israel and the United States embarked on an operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran,” the statement declared.

Netanyahu thanked US President Trump for the American support and dubbed Trump’s leadership “historic.”

“I thank our great friend, President Donald Trump for his historic leadership. For 47 years, the Ayatollah regime has called for ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to America.’ It has spilled our blood, murdered many Americans, and massacred its own people. This murderous terrorist regime must not be allowed to arm itself with nuclear weapons that would enable it to threaten all of humanity. Our joint action will create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their destiny into their own hands,” he said

Netanyahu then made an impassioned appeal to the Iranian people to rise up against the Islamist regime.

“The time has come for all segments of the people in Iran – the Persians, the Kurds, the Azeris, the Balochis, and the Ahwazis – to rid themselves of the yoke of tyranny and bring about a free and peace-seeking Iran,” he said.

The IDF earlier announced the strikes dubbe OPERATION ROARING LION saying the aim was to remove the threat to Israel.

“The IDF and the U.S Armed Forces have launched a broad & joint operation to thoroughly degrade the Iranian terrorist regime and to remove existential threats to Israel over time. The Iranian regime has not abandoned its plan to destroy Israel. The regime has continued financing, training, and arming its proxies positioned on Israel’s borders. These actions constitute an existential threat to Israel and pose a danger to the Middle East and the world as a whole,” it said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned Iranian forces to lay down their arms and surrender, offering immunity, or face “certain death” after the Middle East plunged into a state of full-scale conflict as the ombined military operation by Israel and the United States struck multiple targets across Iran.

‘This Is A Process’: Kiren Rijiju Calls Arvind Kejriwal’s Discharge ‘Procedural Step’

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday observed that the discharge of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi excise policy case is a procedural matter subject to review by higher judicial authorities.

The Union Minister, while talking to the media, said, “This is a process. When a court issues an order and finds it wrong, it is corrected by a larger bench or a higher court… An appeal is filed, and then the correct decision is given.”

“By abusing Prime Minister Modi, he wants to remain in the headlines. We cannot stop him; he has the freedom to speak, and we cannot take away his freedom,” Kiren Rijiju further said.

Meanwhile, today, Arvind Kejriwal, following the Court’s discharge in the excise policy case yesterday, is set to visit the Hanuman Temple at 12 pm.

Kejriwal, along with party leaders Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Durgesh Pathak, will offer prayers at the temple.

The Rouse Avenue Court discharged Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, and 21 others in the CBI’s Delhi excise policy case, which originated from allegations of corruption in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The CBI had alleged that the policy was framed to benefit certain private liquor licensees by allegedly reducing licence fees and fixing profit margins, resulting in kickbacks and financial loss to the Delhi government.

The FIR was registered by the CBI in August 2022 following a complaint by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. According to the agency, a criminal conspiracy was allegedly hatched at the stage of policy formulation, with deliberate loopholes introduced to favour select entities after the tender process.

The court was critical of the investigative approach adopted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), observing that the agency’s theory was based on conjectures rather than admissible evidence. It also cautioned against the use of approver statements to fill gaps in the prosecution’s case and recommended a departmental inquiry against certain CBI officials. (ANI)

Alia Bhatt Responds To BAFTA, ‘Gone Girl’ Backlash

Just days after social media was flooded with clips and comments about her BAFTA appearance, Alia Bhatt has finally reacted to the online backlash.

The ‘Raazi’ actress addressed the chatter that followed a short interview moment from the 79th British Academy Film Awards, where she appeared as a presenter.

Alia had taken the global stage at BAFTA to present the award for Best Film Not in the English Language. While her presence at the event drew attention, it was a short interview after the ceremony that became a major talking point online.

In a now-viral clip, Alia was asked to name a film with the biggest plot twist. After a brief pause, the actress answered ‘Gone Girl.’ Her hesitation soon led to mixed reactions on social media. Some felt her response was natural, others read too much into her expressions and body language.

Alia later reacted to the buzz in a conversation with fashion commentator Diet Sabya. She questioned why the moment became such a big issue and said, “Why is it being talked about so much? Is it because of my expression?”

Explaining what happened during the interview, Alia shared what was going on in her mind at that time. She said, “So basically I really think it is the best twist but I have not liked watched it in… when did it release? 10 years ago? So I have not watched it after that.”

“So when she was like, ‘that monologue,’ I was like ‘haan’ (yes) and I was going back in my head that oh ya, ‘that monologue, correct correct correct’ and she was mentioned cleaning the floor and I was like like ‘haan’ (yes) so I was like going back in time and I guess that’s what you saw. I am a cool girl. I am a sweet girl. But I could be… total… I mean I can be like… I am more sweet than I am cool. Actually, I don’t think I am cool. I am uncool girl, my sister would say that,” she added.

On the work front, Alia is gearing up for her next projects. She will lead Alpha, a female-led spy thriller from the YRF Spy Universe, directed by Shiv Rawail. The film also stars Bobby Deol and Sharvari Wagh and is expected to release next year. (ANI)

The makers have unveiled a fresh look from the world of ‘Spirit’, introducing Vivek Oberoi’s character to the fans.

On Thursday, the makers dropped a new poster of the film, showing Vivek Oberoi in a never-before-seen avatar, commanding a powerful screen presence. The actor can be seen dressed in a dark robe, paired with a pair of sunglasses. He also holds a sword while exuding a confident, menacing aura.

Earlier in January, the makers announced the film’s release date.

Kerala High Court Lifts Stay On Release Of ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’

The Kerala High Court Division Bench on Friday lifted the stay on the release of the film ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’.

High Court Division Bench of Justices SA Dharmadhikari and PV Balakrishnan stayed interim order passed by Single Bench Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, which stayed the release for 15 days.

On February 26, the Kerala High Court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to re-watch and reconsider the clearance of ‘The Kerala Story 2’, following claims that the film contains hate-spreading content.

The Kerala HC had also imposed a 15-day interim stay on the film’s release. While hearing a petition that raised concerns about certain scenes in the film allegedly inciting hatred and threatening communal harmony, the court also examined the earlier decision of the CBFC, which had granted certification permitting the film’s screening.

Observing the seriousness of the allegations, the bench ordered the Board to undertake a detailed re-examination of the controversial portions of the film. The CBFC has been ordered to submit a report clarifying whether the remarks in question amount to an insult against a specific community.

‘The Kerala Story 2,’ the sequel to the National Award-winning ‘The Kerala Story’, that came out in 2023, follows the lives of three young women who fall into what the film describes as deceptive marriages and face alleged forced religious conversions.

Ever since the trailer for the sequel was released, the film has been drawing strong reactions from all corners, and several social media users have criticised it as “propaganda,” while the filmmakers maintain that it is based on researched real-life incidents.

Earlier, reports claimed that the teaser of the film was removed after court intervention.

However, the makers denied these claims. (ANI)

TVK Chief Vijay’s Wife Files For Divorce, Alleges ‘Adulterous Relationship’ With Actress

In a shocking turn of events, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay’s wife Sankgeetha has filed a petition for divorce against him in the Chengalpattu family court in Chennai.

This comes amid reports that Sankgeetha has been living separately from her husband.

As per the divorce petition, Sankgeetha has accused Vijay of infidelity, alleging that he has had an “adulterous relationship” with an actress.

“In April 2021, the Petitioner (Sankgeetha) discovered that the Respondent (Vijay) was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress. This caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust,” the petition stated, adding that the actor “continued open association with the actress,” which caused Sankgeetha emotional agony and embarrassment to the children.

“Since 2021, Vijay had emotionally withdrawn, treating his wife with verbal disdain and subjecting her to constructive desertion, forcing her to live separately within the matrimonial home. Vijay continued to travel abroad and attend public events, with the said actress,” the petition further continued.

Sankgeetha also alleged that the actress regularly posted pictures of her outings with the actor on social media.

“The actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media. Vijay neither denied nor objected to the posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them,” she added.

Vijay and Sankgeetha met for the first time in 1996. A Sri Lankan, Sangeetha, was brought up in Britain. The couple registered their marriage in 1998 in the UK, following which they also held a ceremonial marriage as per Hindu traditions in Chennai on August 25, 1999.

They are parents to son Jason and daughter Dhivya. (ANI)
