Rahul Lauds Gym Trainer Deepak

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, lauded his meeting with gym trainer Deepak Kumar on Wednesday, and praised him for his “courage and patriotism.”

Sharing a video of their meeting on X, Gandhi wrote, “The ideology of harmony and love resides in the hearts of millions of Indians, but there is also fear in their minds–Deepak has shown the path to all of them with his courage.”

He further stated, “Those who try to spread hate and intimidate society are, in truth, cowards–never fear them. Deepak has defended our tricolor and our Constitution. He stood firm against hate, protected the weak– There is no greater patriotism than this.”

Earlier on Monday, LoP Rahul Gandhi met with gym trainer Deepak, who was in the news for coming to the defence of Ahmed’s Baba School Dress & Matching Centre in Kotdwar last month.

The incident occurred on January 26, when a group of people demanded that the shopkeeper change the name of his shop. A dispute arose when he refused to comply with their demand. A gym trainer, Deepak Kumar, reportedly confronted the mob, after which protests broke out on January 31.

Police had registered FIRs based on video footage and urged people not to sensationalise the incident on social media. Pauri Garhwal SSP Sarvesh Panwar said that police have registered cases based on complaints by both parties.

He told ANI that on January 31, the protestors approached Deepak Kumar and blocked the road.SSP Panwar said, “On January 26, a dispute arose between two parties over a disagreement about changing the name of a shop. We received complaints from both sides, and we registered FIRs. On January 31, some outsiders came to Deepak’s place and blocked the road. The police took suo motu cognisance of the matter and registered a case against them. I urge and appeal to everyone not to disrupt the peace or disturb communal harmony. We will take strict legal action against anyone found guilty.”

Meanwhile, Gym Trainer Deepak Kumar said the issue escalated into communal tensions after a group of boys misbehaved toward the shopkeeper. Deepak questioned the case filed against him, claiming that the other party started the dispute.

Deepak Kumar told ANI, “My friends and I were celebrating Republic Day when we went to one of our friends’ shops. Some boys came to the shop and started misbehaving with the shopkeeper over the shop’s name. I asked them to stop misbehaving, but they replied that in their religion, the word ‘Baba’ is only used for Sidhbali Baba, and for no one else, and that the shopkeeper would have to change the shop’s name. The shopkeeper refused, and the argument escalated into a communal issue.”

“The boys were from the Bajrang Dal, and the shop belonged to a Muslim. So I said, ‘My name is Mohammed Deepak, what’s it to you?’ I don’t understand why a case was filed against me when the entire fight was started by the other side. We don’t support any political party, but rather an ideology. Hanuman is an ideal for every gym member because he inspires hard work,” the gym trainer added. (ANI)

Crime Increasing In Bihar, Law & Order Has Collapsed: Tejashwi Slams NDA Govt

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Bihar Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, alleging a sharp rise in crime and the “collapse” of law and order across the state.

Yadav alleged that the state government’s “credibility has been eroded.”

Speaking to reporters here, Tejashwi Yadav said, “Crime is increasing day by day. Every day, there are murders, rapes, and gunfire. This shows that the government’s credibility has been eroded…The law and order has collapsed. Criminals rule under this current government… No one in the government, be it the Chief Minister or the two Deputy Chief Ministers, is willing to take responsibility. Nitish Kumar has also become weak. He cannot remember what is happening or not happening.”

He also pointed to the political dynamics of the state, noting, “You can see that Nitish Kumar has never given the state Home Ministry to anyone. But now he has to give it to the BJP.”

Tejashwi Yadav further criticised those who highlight the law and order situation without introspection, saying, “And the people who laudly talks about the crime in the state have to first look at themselves. Law and Order has now ruined.”

Earlier on Monday, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said that the state government is committed to establishing the rule of law.

Sinha said that the opposition has its role to play but should carry out its responsibilities sincerely. “The opposition plays its role. He should stay in Bihar, travel around Bihar, and then he will see development. The Leader of the Opposition should perform his responsibility honestly. This government is establishing the rule of law”, he said.

On February 20, RJD leader Rabri Devi also launched a sharp attack on the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led government, questioning the state’s law and order situation.

Rabri Devi said, “Girls are being raped in some districts. The government should answer this and put a stop to it. The whole country and Bihar are watching. Is this Ram Rajya?. (ANI)

Kotak Hopeful Of Rinku’s Return For Must-Win Clash vs Zimbabwe

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on Wednesday said that left-handed batter Rinku Singh could rejoin the squad by evening ahead of India’s do-or-die ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 clash against the Zimbabwe cricket team in Chennai.

Rinku had missed the team’s practice session earlier in the day after returning home due to a family emergency, as per sources.

Plenty of players like Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, etc. were visible during the practice, but Rinku was not present at the field.

“Rinku’s father is not well, he took a break, and we hope he will join the team by this evening,” the India batting coach said during the pre-match press conference.

So far, Rinku has had a mixed bag World Cup with the bat, often arriving at the crease with very few balls left to score. He has made just 24 runs in five innings, staying unbeaten twice and having a best score of 11. In 10 T20Is this year, the left-hander has made 115 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.75, with a strike rate of 132.18 and best score of 44.

Team India will be playing a must-win clash against Zimbabwe at Chennai on Thursday. After a humiliating 76-run loss to South Africa in their Super Eight phase opener, the Men in Blue will need to win their remaining matches to keep themselves alive in their title defence and also hope that South Africa ends the Super Eight phase unbeaten.

Team India squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup:

Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Mohammed Siraj. (ANI)

A Teardrop on The Face of Buddha

Conflict, in any age, anywhere, needs chroniclers, like Sanjaya, narrator of the 18-day battle’s proceedings in the Mahabharata. That task is performed by journalists, who do it, objectively if not always neutrally, even as they risk their lives.

Veteran journalist P. Jayaram spent considerable time as Colombo-based correspondent of the United News of India (UNI), covering the ethnic conflict between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamils on the island of Sri Lanka.

As old scars are unlikely to be erased anytime soon, he tells his story, And Doves Flew Over Buddha’s Island, in the form of a novel, so as not to scratch them.

It was, and shall remain, a conflict between the majority Buddhist and the Hindu minority – of people and faiths, both emanating from India – of differing language and culture, of people enduring a part-ancient and part-colonial legacy, of the international power-play.

Managing these civilizational links in modern times is not easy for India as well. Caught in a complex web, it seeks to play the larger neighbour. It must also guard its geopolitical interests on an island next door, located bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean Region.

The 26-year conflict saw India entering a ‘Chakravyuha’ by committing its military to a peace-keeping role on an alien land. None of the stakeholders honestly sustained it, and the Lankans even reneged. India came out bleeding profusely.

For Jayaram and other Colombo-assigned Indian journalists, reporting amidst raging anti-India sentiment could not have been comfortable. Like other smaller neighbours, it pays to be anti-India. This writer can empathise, having missed the Colombo assignment, but later visiting Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa to see IPKF operations.

Jayaram tells of love and hope amidst hatred and violence. The political class nurtures it to polarise society and win sectional support. He records the concerns, confusion and contradictions in a society.

Symbolising the hopeless grimness, yet deeply in love, are Suresh, a Hindu Lankan Tamil and Darshini, his Sinhala/Buddhist soulmate and course-mate at the engineering college. Their University professor, Thurairajah, whose wife is dying, and his family, rendered homeless like thousands of other Tamils, swears that he “will not raise his children among barbarians who claim recorded civilisation of 3,000 years.”

Minister Lasintha Weerekoona echoes rumours of the Indian Army ‘invading’ the island to ‘protect’ the Tamils and threatens: “Sri Lanka’s Tamils will be wiped out within 24 hours.”

Jayaram records: “But other than expressions of concern over the continuing ethnic violence, there was no tangible action on the part of Delhi.”

Complicating the ethnic conflict were the Marxist/ Maoist Sinhala radicals of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), fighting to overthrow the existing structure of “class enemies.” The State eliminated them, but the Sinhala-Tamil differences remain.

It began with independent Lanka’s first prime minister’s “son-of-the-soil” policy. The story is similar to other former colonies that became free, across Africa and Asia. Through the 1980s, right up to 2009, “students killed students and prisoners killed prisoners.” Jayaram, who scouted for ‘hard’ news, displays a newsman’s penchant for unvarnished details. A good novel about people must rest on hard facts to sound credible, and not only on mushy, pulpy, sweet/sour/bitter nothings.

Save the two lovers, perhaps, his characters bear real names known in their times. There is irony in abundance as many of them died violent deaths. Jayaram’s novel serves to remind us of their edgy existence and their exits, timely or not, justified or not. They are masters of their situations, and before long, are victims. The conflict is unforgiving.

Jayaram’s narrative is straight. He uses words like ‘thugs’ for those who engage in or mastermind violence. His sympathies are with all victims of violence. He does not pass judgment on their actions and intentions. Nor, for that matter, does he mourn their deaths. He is simply Sanjaya, the narrator of the Mahabharata.

The novel underscores the sad reality that violence is the principal weapon in any conflict. The targeting of unarmed innocents, even children, school and women at marketplaces, like in the north and northeast of Lanka where the Tamils predominantly reside, is akin to what mankind has engaged in down the ages, be it erstwhile Yugoslavia, East Pakistan, Afghanistan…. The list is long and certainly unending. Humankind continues to kill, and will do till eternity.

That violence begets violence is a given. Jayaram writes: “The brutality of attacks by Indian forces against Tamilians matched, if not exceeded, those of the Sri Lankan forces.”

He puts it in cold words — of mayhem by “Sinhala Thugs” meant to put the Tamils on the island “in their place”, as “a signal to their patrons in Delhi”. This only prompts the Tamil militants of the LTTE and other outfits to arm themselves with resolve, and with guns and explosives, to counter bullet-for-bullet.

Delhi was, of course, the most favourite villain. When the first contingent with plans for sending 3,000 was announced in July 1987, I had said this was going to be “India’s Vietnam.” None belurved it. The IPKF at one stage swelled to a lakh. A few thousand guerrillas defeated the world’s fourth-largest army.

Colombo didn’t want the IPKF, and the Lankan Tamils, not just the Eelam and Sinhala boys, were all happy to see it withdraw.

Back in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi refused to participate in a ceremony to welcome them back. The Indian military has faced defeats, small and big, but such ignominy was unprecedented.

Five years after the IPKF was forced to leave, “those who cheered its exit desperately wanted the Indians back, if needed, invoke the same 1987 Accord that had been rejected.” Once bitten, badly, by the Lankans’ rank opportunism and lack of grace, India merely expressed concern when the LTTE started using surface-to-air missiles, and wisely refused to return to that quagmire.

Just every stakeholder had blood on hand. But it was Rajiv Gandhi, who signed the Accord with President J R Jayawardene and sent the IPKF, who paid the highest price. Many analysts say that this stopped his track to lead India again.

Jayaram’s narrative has the teenage Dhanu carrying out a blast at Fort Railway Station in Colombo. That earned her LTTE supremo Prabhakaran’s attention and later, the key role in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

Having killed a President, several ministers, most of the Tamil rivals and a former Indian premier, emboldened LTTE chief Prabhakaran. Very late, he realised that his biggest mistake was to kill Rajiv. Too drunk with power and strength, he did not know when to accept a ceasefire and end the conflict.

It all ended on May 18, 2009, when the Sri Lankan Army closed in on him. India kept away this time. An estimated 50,000 Tamils perished. The government later admitted that 20,000 had disappeared. In all, 100,000 perished in the conflict.

As peace – of the graveyard – prevailed, doves flew back to the Land of Buddha. While Lanka is relatively at peace today, the Tamils’ aspirations remain largely unfulfilled.

Today, a mellowed and matured former JVP activist, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is President of Sri Lanka.

Five OTT Platforms Blocked By MIB Following Due Procedure: Govt Sources

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) on Tuesday blocked five online streaming platforms following due procedure, according to government sources.

The platforms identified include MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu, which allegedly hosted obscene content.

The IT Act and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules, 2021), together, have put in place a stringent framework to deal with unlawful and harmful content in the digital space.

It imposes clear obligations on intermediaries to ensure accountability.

In July of 2025, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) ordered the blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) platforms for allegedly publishing obscene, vulgar and, in some cases, pornographic material. The directive was issued on July 23, 2025, in consultation with multiple government departments and civil society stakeholders, according to sources. The platforms in question, which include Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix among others, were found to be disseminating content that violated several provisions of Indian law, including Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

In total, 26 websites and 14 mobile applications–9 listed on Google Play Store and 5 on the Apple App Store–have been ordered to be disabled by intermediaries under provisions of the IT Act, 2000 and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. According to the sources, the Ministry said that much of the content showcased by these platforms involved graphic sexual innuendos, long sequences of nudity, and pornographic visuals. “There was hardly any storyline, theme, or message in a social context,” it said.

Some content was also found to depict inappropriate sexual situations involving family relationships, further aggravating concerns over legality and decency. The government had several rounds of communication with the platforms. In September 2024, all 25 platforms had received official warnings. Prior to this, in February 2025, the Ministry had issued an advisory urging OTT platforms to comply with India’s obscenity laws and the Code of Ethics prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021. Yet, the platforms allegedly continued to host and stream objectionable content. In one notable example, the series ‘House Arrest’ hosted on the Ullu platform was taken down in May following the Ministry’s intervention. However, the government alleges that certain platforms have continued their operations by creating new domains even after previous blocking orders–five such platforms reportedly resumed publishing similar content after being blocked in March 2024.

The action was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA), industry associations FICCI and CII, and subject experts in the fields of women and child rights.Mentioning that previously the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC), a self-regulatory body headed by a former Supreme Court judge, found that content in edited on ALTT was “totally distasteful and bizarre,” with sex and nudity being shown without any contextual justification.

Similarly, over 100 webseries were also removed from the Ullu platform, with the council finding that the platform removed or edited the wesbseries temporarily and then uploads the unedited versions after a while to circumvent the warnings.Several of the platforms had previously drawn the attention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which flagged Ullu and ALTT for alleged violations in July and August 2024.

The Ministry also received multiple public grievances about the content hosted on these platforms. (ANI)

‘The Kerala Story 2’ Makers Deny Rumours Of Teaser Removal

The makers of ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ have dismissed reports claiming the film’s teaser was pulled following court intervention.

Sunshine Pictures issued a statement that said, “…would like to categorically clarify that the news currently circulating regarding the removal of The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond teaser is completely false, baseless, and misleading. The matter is presently sub judice. No judgment or order has been passed by any court directing the removal of any content. We have not deleted or taken down any material.”

The statement further read, “Both the teaser and the trailer of The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond continue to remain available across all our official platforms. We strongly urge media houses, digital platforms, and individuals to refrain from spreading unverified information and speculative reports. Such misinformation only creates unnecessary confusion.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Kerala High Court ordered the makers of The Kerala Story 2 to arrange a screening of the Hindi film for the court in Kochi before its release on Friday.

The Kerala Story 2, the sequel of the National Award-winning The Kerala Story, which released in 2023, follows the lives of three young women who fall into what the film describes as deceptive marriages and face alleged forced religious conversions.

The sequel has sparked strong reactions since its trailer launch. Opposition leaders, celebrities and several social media users have criticised it as “propaganda”, while the filmmakers maintain that it is based on researched real-life incidents.

In an interview with ANI, director Kamakhya Narayan Singh asserted that if he had shown anything wrong or misleading in the film, he would “leave filmmaking.” (ANI)

Arijit Singh To Release Unfinished Songs Throughout The Year After Playback Retirement

Months after announcing his retirement from playback singing, Arijit Singh has reassured fans that his voice will continue to be heard through a slate of unfinished songs set for release over the coming months.

In January, the singer announced he would no longer take up new playback assignments, a decision that left many listeners disappointed.

On January 27, he wrote on X, “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not going to be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”

Now, in a fresh note shared on his private X account, which he made public on Tuesday, Arijit addressed his fans directly.

Thanking them for their “kindness in this ruthless world,” he clarified that while he has stopped accepting new work, he still has a considerable list of pending tracks to complete.

“There are so many unfinished songs; they are going to keep releasing until they are done. Maybe throughout this whole year. Maybe it will extend into next year too,” he wrote, adding, “Also, who knows what lies ahead?”

Soon after his retirement announcement, actor Aamir Khan visited the singer in his hometown to record the title track for his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming film, ‘Ek Din’.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared by Aamir Khan Productions, Aamir was seen urging him not to quit playback singing, saying, “Aise mat kar yaar, hum logon ka kya hoga?” (ANI)

Maharashtra: 25 Illegal Bangladeshi Nationals Arrested By Versova Police In Mumbai

In a major crackdown on illegal immigration, Mumbai’s Versova police arrested 25 Bangladeshi nationals, including 21 transgender individuals, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the police, the detainees, who were suspected during a routine patrol at Shakulshaha Dargah in Versova, were later found to be Bangladeshi nationals based on interrogation and electronic evidence. Authorities indicated that more arrests could follow as investigations continue.

Senior Versova Police Officer Deepshikha Ware said that these individuals reportedly enter India through routes via Kolkata and Mizoram. Many of them have been residing in India for six to eight years, with settlements not only in Mumbai but also in Gujarat and Delhi.

Addressing the unique situation of the transgender detainees, the police noted that in Bangladesh, transgender individuals often face a lack of security and respect. “They seek alternative routes to India as they understand that everyone has the right to equality here,” officials said.

The operation marks the largest action against illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators in Mumbai this year.

Earlier, Pune City Police detected two suspected Bangladeshi women during a massive combing operation conducted in the Budhwar Peth red-light area, as part of a drive against illegal activities and unlawful practices, officials said.

The operation was carried out on the directions of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and involved an extensive deployment of police personnel across the area.

During the exercise, police checked 41 buildings, verified 426 women and 290 men, and conducted nakabandis at five locations where 459 persons and 32 vehicles were examined.

Police said the two suspected Bangladeshi women, along with some minor girls, were taken into custody for safety and further verification at Faraskhana Police Station, and necessary legal procedures are being initiated.

During the same operation, police also arrested a 31-year-old man and seized 7 grams of charas and three injection vials from his possession.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at Faraskhana Police Station.(ANI)

Trump Says He Ended India-Pak Conflict, Claims 35 Million Lives Saved

US President Donald Trump in his state of the Union Address on Tuesday night (local time) once again claimed that he had ended eight wars including the India-Pakistan conflict that arose in the aftermath of the Pahalgam Terror attacks last year.

In his address, the US President also made a stunning revelation saying that Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif had told him that almost 35 million people would have died had he not intervened in the conflict.

“In my first 10 months, I ended eight wars… Cambodia and Thailand… Pakistan and India would have had a nuclear war. 35 million people said the Prime Minister of Pakistan would have died if it were not for my involvement,” he claimed.

India has denied any involvement of the United States in the agreement to cease hostilities with Pakistan, maintaining that the request to end military operations had come from the Director General of Military operations in Pakistan.

India had initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, the operation was a punitive and targeted campaign to dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan.

In the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Pakistan initiated a series of retaliatory drone and UCAV attacks targeting key Indian airbases and logistics infrastructure. These attempts, however, were effectively neutralised by India’s comprehensive and multi-layered air defence architecture.

The operation unfolded across land, air, and sea, a seamless demonstration of synergy between the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy. The Indian Air Force (IAF) played a crucial role in delivering precision strikes against terror infrastructure across Pakistan. It conducted high-impact air operations on targets such as the Nur Khan Air Base and the Rahimyar Khan Air Base.

Meanwhile, in his State of the Union Address. the US President said his administration was “working hard” to end “the killing and slaughter between Russia and Ukraine, calling it “a war which would have never happened if I were President.”

Addressing the situation in Iran, Trump kept his options open saying he still preferred a diplomatic solution.

“They have already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas, and they are working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America…My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon. Can’t happen,” Trump said. (ANI)
