US Probes India, Other Countries Over Alleged Unfair Trade

The Donald Trump administration has initiated fresh investigations into alleged “unfair trade practice” by 16 major trading partners, including India, China, and Bangladesh. The move aims to reinstate tariff pressure following a US Supreme Court ruling last month that declared previous levies illegal.

These inquiries are being carried out under “Section 301” of the Trade Act of 1974. This legislation grants the US Trade Representative the authority to enforce tariffs or other punitive actions against nations found to be using unfair trade practices.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that the investigations could result in new tariffs being applied to China, the European Union, India, Japan, South Korea, and Mexico by the coming summer.

The “excess capacity” probe also extends to several other partners, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Switzerland, and Norway.

Notably, Canada, the second-largest trading partner of the US, was excluded from the list.

Greer explained to reporters during a conference call that the “investigations will focus on economies that we have evidence appears to exhibit structural excess capacity and production in various manufacturing sectors, such as through larger persistent trade surpluses or underutilised or unused capacity.”

In addition to the capacity probe, Greer announced he would launch a separate investigation on Thursday under Section 301. This second probe aims to prohibit US imports of products manufactured using forced labour and is expected to cover over 60 nations.

While the US has previously targeted solar panels and other commodities from China’s Xinjiang region under the Uyghur Forced Labour Protection Act, this new inquiry could broaden such restrictions to other countries.

Greer expressed a desire for international partners to adopt similar bans against forced labour goods, referencing standards in a nearly century-old trade law.

Washington has consistently alleged that Chinese officials have set up labour camps for ethnic Uyghur and other Muslim groups in the western region; however, Beijing continues to deny any claims of mistreatment.

Greer says his department intends to wrap up the Section 301 probes, including any “proposed remedies,” before the temporary tariffs introduced by Trump in late February expire this July.

Following the Supreme Court’s February 20 decision to strike down global tariffs, Trump utilised Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to implement a 10 per cent tariff for a 150-day period. The timeline for the capacity investigation is set to be rapid, with public feedback welcomed until April 15 and a public hearing scheduled for approximately May 5.

These proceedings provide the Trump administration with a mechanism to re-establish a “credible tariff threat” to ensure trading partners remain at the negotiating table. This strategy seeks to enforce trade agreements originally designed to lower the higher rates previously imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Greer noted that these measures had been long anticipated and should not shock international partners. He urged nations to adhere to their existing agreements, though he did not guarantee that doing so would make them immune to all new Section 301 tariffs.

Emphasising the President’s resolve, Greer stated that Trump “will find a way to deal with unfair trading practices. He’ll find a way to get our trade deficit down. He’ll find a way to protect US manufacturing. We have a lot of tools to do it.” (ANI)

Trump Says War With Iran To End ‘soon’ As ‘Practically Nothing Left’ To Target

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that the ongoing war with Iran would end “soon”, claiming that there is “practically nothing left to target” after sustained military strikes.

In a brief phone interview with Axios, Trump said the military campaign had progressed faster than initially anticipated and inflicted more damage than expected.

“The war is going great. We are way ahead of the timetable. We have done more damage than we thought possible, even in the original six-week period,” Trump said as quoted by Axios.

Speaking about the timeline of the conflict, Trump said it could conclude whenever he decides to bring it to an end.

“Little this and that… Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he told Axios during the five-minute call.

Trump also alleged that Iran’s actions extended beyond its confrontation with Israel and the United States, claiming that Tehran had posed a broader threat to countries across the Gulf region.

“They were after the rest of the Middle East. They are paying for 47 years of death and destruction they caused. This is payback. They will not get off that easily,” Trump said as quoted by Axios.

Trump has previously offered varying timelines for the end of the conflict; however, on Monday, he said that the military operation in Iran would be over “very soon”, but did not give any details of the timeline.

When asked by a reporter about his previous remarks of calling Iran an excursion and when the military operation would end, Trump said, “Very soon.”

“Everything they have is gone, including their leadership. In fact their two levels of leadership and even actually as it turns out more than that, but two levels of leadership are gone. Most people have never even heard about the leaders that they’re talking about. So it’s obviously been very, very powerful, very effective,” the US President said during a press conference in Florida.

Trump’s comment has significantly contradicted the administration’s remarks on the timeline of the ongoing war.

On Tuesday, his Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, said that the US will continue its operations until its objectives are achieved, while asserting that the campaign is being carried out on Washington’s own timeline.

“We will not relent until the enemy is totally and decisively defeated. But we do so on our timeline and at our choosing,” he said.

Hegseth made his remarks in a briefing at the Pentagon along with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine. (ANI)

‘Assassination Attempt Foiled’: Omar Abdullah Questions How Attacker Got Close To His Father

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday labelled the attack against his father, National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah, as an assassination attempt, and questioned how the attacker managed to get so close despite the former CM being under Z+ security cover by the National Security Guard (NSG).

Raising concerns over the attack, the Jammu and Kashmir CM said that Farooq Abdullah had a very close shave after a man with a loaded pistol attempted to shoot him at a marriage party in Jammu’s Royal Park in the Greater Kailash area, with the close protection team deflecting the shot and foiling the assassination attempt.

“Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was asked to get within range to discharge shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt was foiled. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM,” Omar Abdullah posted on X.

Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir CM, confirmed that no one was injured in the incident and the accused has been taken into custody. He was present at the location when the firing incident occurred.

When asked if anyone was injured in the incident, Wani told reporters, “No, it’s nothing like that. Allah has been very kind.”

Regarding police arrangements, he said it was too early to comment on anything. “They (police) should check. It is too early to comment on anything,” Wani said, confirming that the accused had been detained.

“He (accused) has been taken into custody for now. This is just the start. When the investigation is complete, we will know what it was and what he was looking for,” he said, adding that Farooq Abdullah was absolutely fine and was currently taking rest.

“He (Farooq Abdullah) is absolutely fine. He is currently taking some rest,” Wani said.

The Jammu and Kashmir police said that an attempt was made on the life of Farooq Abdullah.

According to the police, the security personnel of NSG, who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, was taken into custody. The accused is a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu.

The firearm, used in the crime, has also been recovered from the possession of the accused, police said, adding that cognizance has been taken and further investigation is ongoing.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who was also present at the incident spot, also confirmed earlier that no one was injured in the incident but questioned the security lapse.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone reached Gangyal Police station were the arrested person who fired shots on Farooq Abdullah has been taken into custody. (ANI)

India Assisting Return Of Citizens From Iran Via Land Routes Through Armenia, Azerbaijan: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday asserted that the government is working to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens stranded in West Asia amid escalating tensions.

MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while addressing an Inter-Ministerial Briefing on Recent Developments in West Asia, said that the Indian Embassy in Tehran remains fully operational and is on high alert. The government is assisting Indian nationals, including students and pilgrims, who wish to leave the country.

He further added that those choosing to exit Iran via land, the embassy is assisting citizens in crossing into Armenia and Azerbaijan, from where they can board commercial flights to return to India.

“Others continue to be there. Our embassy is in regular touch with them. We have also relocated some students and other visitors, pilgrims, to different cities to ensure their safety. We are also assisting–our embassy in Tehran is assisting–people who want to make a land border crossing and go into Armenia and Azerbaijan, and from there take the commercial flights to come back home. So that option is also available to those who want to take and take advantage of that. And we have been helping these people,” he said.

Jaiswal urged Indians to follow advisories and stay in touch with embassies and consulates while providing updates regarding the safety, status, and assistance being offered to the Indian community in the region.

“Please do follow all our social media handles and our press releases and statements for more updates on the welfare of our Indian community in the Gulf region, as also on developments concerning us and how we are engaging and dealing with those in that region. In Iran, there’s a lot of interest because we have students and we have Indian nationals there as well, some 9,000 of them. Of these, several of our students and others who were there, paying heed to our advisories to leave the country, returned home,” he said.

Indian missions across the region are continuously monitoring the situation, issuing updated advisories, and providing support to community members.

Jaiswal further said that the government prioritises the welfare of its 10 million-strong diaspora in the Gulf region, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaging with regional leaders.

“The Ministry of External Affairs has kept you abreast of the developments in the region. I would like to add a few elements to that, as well as to reiterate some of the points that we’ve made earlier. As you know, we have a large diaspora in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, numbering around 10 million, or a crore. The welfare of our diaspora is of utmost high priority and importance to us,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar have maintained regular communication with their counterparts in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, and Iran to emphasise the safety of the 10-million-strong Indian diaspora in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

“You would have seen we have put out statements where our Prime Minister has spoken to several leaders in the region, including leaders from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Israel. The External Affairs Minister has also been in regular touch with his counterparts in these countries, as well as Iran. Today, he also had several conversations with his counterparts, and those details have also been made available to you,” he said.

Jaiswal said that Indian missions are in touch with those stranded. The Ministry of External Affairs has set up a control room to address queries and concerns.

“Just want to say that we remain committed to the welfare of our citizens, our nationals who reside in the GCC and the West Asian countries. All our missions in the region are in regular touch with our community members. We have issued advisories and are regularly updating them. For more details on those, my colleague would like to add a few more details on that. I would also like to update you that we have, in the Ministry of External Affairs, started a control room, which is functioning throughout the day,” he said.

“We have been receiving a lot of phone calls, a lot of emails regarding Indian nationals and their welfare, from friends and families, and we have been guiding them in all possible manner. Just to give you an update, yesterday we received 75 phone calls and 11 emails, and those were responded to. Today again, our people are there manning the control room and doing their very best,” said Jaiswal.

Jaiswal also noted that there were certain casualties in the region. Two Indians dies and one is missing, and efforts are being made to trace him.

“There have been reports of some casualties, and on that, I would like to update you. We have two Indian nationals who we lost, and one remains missing. We express our condolences to the families. These three Indian nationals–they have died, or they are missing–this happened when they were on ships, merchant vessels, and that merchant vessel came under attack. Few Indians who suffered injuries in the GCC region are being looked after, they are being treated, and our embassy and our consulate is in close touch with them to ensure their well-being,” he said.

Another Indian is injured and is receiving medical attention in Dubai, Jaiswal said.

“One Indian national, as was–you would have seen those reports as well, was injured in Israel. He was taken to the hospital. He is receiving treatment, and he is recuperating well. This morning, you would have seen reports that an Indian national was injured in Dubai. This gentleman, our consulate is in touch with him. He is also receiving treatment at a hospital, and we are in regular touch with him to ensure his welfare and well-being,” he said.

Indian missions across the region are continuously monitoring the situation, issuing updated advisories, and providing support to community members. (ANI)

The airline added that passengers requiring further support can reach out to its customer contact centre for assistance as the situation develops.

Tisca Mourns Demise Of Her Mother Pammi Arora

Actor Tisca Chopra’s mother, Pammi Arora, passed away on March 7.

On Wednesday, Tisca penned an emotional note, remembering her mother.

Recalling her mom’s two-word philosophy “Mitti Pao”, Tisca shared, “On the 7th of March, we said goodbye to my mother, Pammi Arora. Those who knew her loved her, instantly, completely. And the reason was very simple, she was so very light of being. Seriousness never stood much of a chance in her company. If a problem appeared, she had a two-word philosophy ready: ‘Mitti pao.’ Throw some earth over it. Move on. Life was too lively to sit around nursing grievances. Mum had a smile that resembled the moon peeping through clouds. Nothing lingered too long in her mind, it was always jest over judgement. And kindness over everything else.”

“From her I learnt one of the most useful life lessons anyone ever gave me: You already have a ‘no’ in your pocket. Now go out and get a ‘yes’. It was classic Pammi Arora, practical optimism with a twinkle in the eye. She also gave me something else that shaped my entire life:

the artistic gene. The instinct to perform, to tell stories, to lean toward colour and expression rather than grey routine. That, and a zest for living that I hope, with all my heart, will travel onward to Tara.”

Tisca said she was “lucky to grow up in the warmth of her gentleness, and equally lucky to inherit a little of that stubborn streak that simply refuses to give up on life.”

“To the outside world she was ‘Arora Ma’am.’ To generations of children she was the teacher who was somehow almost as childlike as them. She made school feel lighter, softer and more like home. Many of them later returned as parents themselves, proudly bringing their own children to the same teacher who had once loved them. A very rare legacy. At home she was gentle yet stubborn when it mattered. Cancer and broken hip came, and she refused to bow. Even in the ICU, her Punjabi shoulders bobbed up and down to the beats of a song. She had a charm that made you forget how much she was carrying. I was lucky to grow up in the warmth of her gentleness, and equally lucky to inherit a little of that stubborn streak that simply refuses to give up on life,” she wrote.

“Pammi Arora was a rare and beautiful woman. And if there is one thing she would probably say about all this solemnity, it is this: ‘Bas, ab mitti pao.’ So we will smile through the tears. We will remember the laughter. And we will carry her spirit forward. Because the truth is simple. Those who knew her loved her. And those who loved her will never quite lose her..,” Tisca concluded.

Tisca’s post garnered condolence messages from fans and members of the film industry.

“My deepest condolences Tisc!,” actor Lara Dutta commented.

“Sending Prayers, Strength and Love to you,” a fan wrote.

Tisca also shared several pictures with her mom. (ANI)
