CV Ananda Bose Resigns As West Bengal Governor

CV Ananda Bose on Thursday resigned from the post as West Bengal Governor after sending his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.

The Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Governor confirmed the development to ANI.

“Governor CV Ananda Bose has resigned from his post and has sent his resignation letter to the President of India,” the OSD to the Governor said.

As this happened, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the sudden resignation of CV Ananda Bose as the Governor, and said she was not consulted regarding the appointment of his successor, RN Ravi.

“I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of CV Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal,” Banerjee said on X.

“The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections,” she said.

Banerjee said that the Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of states.

“Union Home Minister just informed me that RN Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure. The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States,” the West Bengal added.

The comes ahead of the forthcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the polling schedule for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry following the conclusion of the panel’s visit to West Bengal. (ANI)

Lavrov: Russia Will Do All To Block US-Israel Ops Against Iran

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday said that Moscow will do everything possible to create conditions that would make any US-Israel military operations against Iran “impossible” amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

During his remarks at the ambassadors’ round-table amid the ongoing crisis, Lavrov said Russia would continue engaging in dialogue with regional countries as well as with the international community, including members of the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly, to prevent further military escalation.

“Russia will do everything to create an atmosphere that will make US and Israeli operations against Iran impossible,” Lavrov said.

“We will continue to dialogue with these countries and include other countries and international communities of the UNSC and UNGA to make these operations impossible,” he added.

He also proposed a moratorium on attacks that lead to civilian casualties in the Middle East, stressing the need to prevent harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Referring to the ongoing military actions, Lavrov questioned the objectives of the operation, saying that even American politicians have not clearly defined its ultimate goal.

Lavrov claimed that one of the objectives behind the strikes on Iran could be to create divisions among countries in the Persian Gulf and between Iran and its Arab neighbours.

“One of the goals of Lion’s Roar or Epic Fury, whatever they call it, even US politicians cannot say what the ultimate goal of these operations is,” the Russian FM said.

“I have no doubts that one of the goals [of striking Iran] was to divide the countries of the Persian Gulf and to divide Iran and its Arab neighbours,” he added.

His remarks come amid escalating tensions in West Asia after a joint US-Israel military strike on Saturday on Iranian territory resulted in the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures, prompting a fierce response from Tehran.

In retaliation, Iran launched waves of drone and missile attacks across multiple Arab countries as the conflict now entered its sixth day.

Tehran’s counter-strikes have also targeted American military bases and Israeli assets throughout the region, with Israel also continuing its strikes on Tehran and widening the conflict to Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah.

The Russian foreign minister also said that recent talks between delegations from the United States and Iran in Geneva had ended “on a positive note”, adding that both sides had come close to reaching certain agreements.

However, he alleged that the US later accused Iran of being unwilling to meet its requirements, which he described as a tactic.

Lavrov also criticised attempts to place sole blame on Iran for the current situation, saying such claims would allow the US and Israel to continue their actions in the region.

“It was stated that the US side was just playing a trick, claiming that Iran is not willing to fulfil their requirements,” he said.

“Claiming just Iran should be accused for what is happening would be the connivance for Israel and the US to continue what they are doing,” Lavrov added.

He further referred to remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, adding that later the US said it had not organised the killing of the Iranian leader.

Lavrov further reiterated Russia’s stance and questioned Washington’s objectives in the ongoing conflict.

“We again have questions about the American goals,” he said. (ANI)

‘Over Next 5-10 Yrs, You Will See Emergence Of New Nuclear Powers’: Former US NSA Official Finer

Jon Finer, former Principal Deputy National Security Adviser of the United States, has warned that the global nuclear landscape could change significantly in the coming decade, with the possible emergence of new nuclear-armed states.

In an interview with ANI on Thursday, Finer said changing global security dynamics and declining confidence in traditional security arrangements could encourage several countries to pursue nuclear capabilities.

“Well, to be honest, I think it began long before this crisis. But this conflict will further drive home the point exactly what you made, that many countries have decided they don’t need nuclear weapons because they are content to live under what we call the United States nuclear umbrella,” he said.

Finer explained that if countries begin to doubt Washington’s commitment to protecting allies, the situation could change rapidly.

“The more the United States demonstrates less commitment to defending partners and allies around the world, the more countries that feel under threat, and by the way, those countries are likely to be in the Middle East, in Asia, in Europe, will believe they need some sort of additional protection, whether it’s living under another country’s nuclear umbrella,” he said.

He noted that alternative security arrangements are already being discussed.

“France is now offering to extend its nuclear umbrella further than it has before, or to obtain these weapons themselves, as a whole host of countries are contemplating. I think sometime over the next five or 10 years, you are likely to see the emergence of new nuclear powers because of these dynamics,” he said.

Responding to a question about reports of Pakistan potentially providing nuclear support to Saudi Arabia, Finer said such possibilities had been discussed in the past.

“That is something that has been widely reported to have been contemplated in the past. You know, we’ll see,” he said.

When asked about the security partnership between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, he said nuclear cooperation had not been explicitly ruled out.

“Look, I don’t think they took nuclear out of that partnership explicitly. Yeah. But, you know, at this point, I think the main driver of Saudi Arabia’s desire to potentially someday have a nuclear weapon was whether Iran would obtain a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Finer also spoke about developments related to Iran’s nuclear programme.

“It does look like, for the time being, very unlikely in the near term that Iran is going to be able to obtain a nuclear weapon, just given the condition of its nuclear program and its military. Should Iran go back down the nuclear path, which, by the way, you could argue, would be rational for them to do? Countries that have nuclear weapons do not tend to be attacked in the way that Iran has been attacked over the last year. I think Saudi Arabia would very seriously look at nuclear weapons in that situation,” he said.

Speaking about Pakistan’s missile programme, Finer reiterated concerns he had previously raised while in government.

“Yeah, I mean, I said when I was in the government that Pakistan was developing an ICBM program that could ultimately reach the United States,” he said.

“By the way, not a totally different concern than the one that the current Trump administration is expressing about Iran, which is also in the process of developing a long-range missile program and has been for some years,” he added.

However, he noted that the programme may still take years to materialise.

“But my understanding, you know, I’m not subject to or privy to all the intelligence here, my understanding is that program is still a number of years from being successfully completed, if it’s ever successfully completed,” he said. (ANI)

Air Arabia Cancels Coimbatore-Sharjah Flights Until March 9

The flights operated by Air Arabia between Coimbatore and Sharjah have been cancelled until March 9 in the wake of the escalating tensions in West Asia.

According to officials, the flight from Coimbatore International Airport to Sharjah and the return flight have both been cancelled.

Airport authorities stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure due to the unsafe airspace conditions prevailing in the West Asian region.

Considering the cancellations have affected hundreds of passengers, including migrant workers and travellers who had planned to fly abroad during this period, the airport administration has advised them to contact the airlines for further updates.

“Passengers seeking further information have been advised to contact Air Arabia at 9087778081,” the airport administration said.

On Wednesday, Air Arabia stated that it has temporarily suspended its flights to and from the UAE until Monday, till 15:00 (UAE time).

The airline said a limited number of flights are operating in coordination with relevant authorities and are subject to operational and safety approvals.

Passengers scheduled on operating flights will be notified directly, while others have been advised not to travel to the airport unless contacted by the airline.

Along with Air Arabia, several other airlines have made adjustments to flight schedules amid continuing disruptions to flight operations due to the Iran conflict in the Middle East.

SpiceJet has announced the operation of multiple special flights from the United Arab Emirates to India to support passengers and ease connectivity concerns.

The airline said on Wednesday that it continues to operate several additional services from key UAE cities, including Dubai and Fujairah, to Mumbai and Delhi.

The special flights are aimed at assisting stranded passengers and ensuring smoother movement between the two countries during this period.

Subsequently, Emirates Airlines announced that all scheduled flights to and from Dubai will remain suspended until March 7 due to ongoing airspace closures across the region.

In a statement, the airline said it continues to operate a limited flight schedule and is prioritising customers with existing bookings on these flights, and passengers transiting through Dubai will only be accepted if their connecting flights are operating as scheduled.

The airline urged customers not to travel to the airport unless they have been directly notified by Emirates or hold confirmed bookings for the limited operating flights.

This comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia after a joint US-Israel military strike on Saturday on Iranian territory resulted in the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other senior figures, prompting a fierce response from Tehran.

In retaliation, Iran launched waves of drone and missile attacks across multiple Arab countries as the conflict now entered its sixth day. (ANI)

Ex-US Principal Dy NSA Calls For Urgent Work To Put Ties Back On Track

Former US Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer highlighted that trust between India and the United States suffered a setback last year, stressing the need for both countries to work towards rebuilding confidence and strengthening ties.

In an interview with ANI, Finer reflected on the trajectory of the India-US relationship, noting that while the partnership has strengthened significantly over the past decades, recent developments have impacted the level of trust between the two nations.

“I think trust suffered a setback last year. So that is something that concerns me,” Finer said.

Emphasising the importance of rebuilding that trust, he added, “We all now have a lot of work to do to put things back on track.”

Finer explained that the India-US relationship has evolved significantly from the mistrust that characterised earlier decades, stating, “I do think damage was done last year. And maybe the most important area of damage is — I started by talking a bit about distrust between the two countries.”

He noted that twenty-five years ago, there was a significant amount of deep scepticism despite both countries recognising the potential of the relationship.

Highlighting the efforts made by successive governments to strengthen cooperation, Finer noted that sustained diplomatic engagement helped reduce mistrust and expand cooperation across several sectors.

“We have done a lot, Indian officials, American officials — again, Republicans, Democrats on our side — to break through that and to reduce the level of distrust and increase our ability to work even on sensitive issues like defence and advanced technologies,” he said.

Finer also underlined the significance of people-to-people ties, saying these connections have historically served as ballast in the relationship.

He pointed to the decline in the number of Indian students studying in the United States as an issue that could affect bilateral ties.

“The fact that the number of Indians studying in the United States is down, at least by what I heard, up to maybe 40 per cent in recent years — I don’t think it’s a good thing for India, but I also don’t think, as an American, it’s a good thing for the United States either,” he said.

Despite these concerns, Finer noted that he remains optimistic about the long-term future of India-US relations, stating, “You know, I have to say, I have been. I still remain bullish.” (ANI)

Cricketer Arjun Tendulkar, the son of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, married longtime girlfriend and businesswoman Saaniya Chandhok in a grand ceremony in Mumbai on March 5.

The wedding brought together prominent personalities from the worlds of cricket, business, politics and Bollywood, turning the occasion into one of the most high-profile social events of the year.

Arjun, the son of Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali Tendulkar, tied the knot with Saaniya Chandhok, granddaughter of noted industrialist Ravi Ghai. The couple, who got engaged in August last year, celebrated their union in the presence of close family members and distinguished guests.

Post-wedding, the couple- flanked by their families, including Sachin Tendulkar, Anjali Tendulkar, and Arjun’s sister Sara Tendulkar- posed for a family portrait for the cameras.

For the ceremony, Saaniya Chandhok chose a classic bridal look rooted in traditional Indian aesthetics. The saree’s pallu featured heavy gold borders, adding a regal finish to the ensemble.

Her jewellery followed a classic bridal style, featuring a statement choker necklace, paired with matching earrings and stacked bangles. The jewellery appeared to feature gemstone detailing that complemented the red and gold palette. Saaniya styled her hair in soft waves with a centre parting, while her makeup featured defined eyes and a warm-toned bridal look.

Arjun Tendulkar matched the ceremonial theme in a deep red sherwani heavily embellished with gold embroidery. The outfit featured a high collar and intricate floral motifs, making it a striking wedding ensemble. He paired the sherwani with ivory or cream straight-cut trousers and brown traditional shoes, creating a coordinated look with the bride’s attire. His hairstyle was neatly styled with a subtle side part, giving the overall appearance a formal and understated finish.

The Tendulkar family also drew attention with their elegant traditional outfits. Sachin Tendulkar opted for a classic cream or ivory sherwani featuring subtle embroidery, paired with matching trousers and traditional footwear for a dignified appearance.

Anjali Tendulkar wore a dark pink saree highlighted with gold detailing and an ornate border. She paired the saree with a statement necklace and matching earrings, while her soft layered hairstyle and understated makeup completed the look.

Conflict Has Reached Our Backyard, PM Is Silent: Rahul Gandhi

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday again cornered Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of “silence” after a US submarine sank the Iranian warship “IRIS Dena” near Sri Lanka.

The ship was returning after participating in the International Fleet Review 2026 (IFR) and MILAN 2026 in Visakhapatnam.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said that the West Asia conflict has reached India’s backyard and accused PM Modi of “surrendering India’s strategic autonomy” when the country needs a “steady hand at the wheel”.

“The conflict has reached our backyard, with an Iranian warship sunk in the Indian Ocean. Yet the Prime Minister has said nothing. At a moment like this, we need a steady hand at the wheel. Instead, India has a compromised PM who has surrendered our strategic autonomy,” he said.

He also raised concerns over India’s oil supplies being under threat due to tensions in the Gulf region.

“India’s oil supplies are under threat, with more than 40% of our imports transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The situation is even worse for LPG and LNG,” he said.

Former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibbal said that the ‘IRIS Dena’ had joined the International Fleet Review 2026 (IFR) and MILAN 2026 on India’s invitation, adding that the US attack “ignored India’s sensitivities”.

“The Iranian ship will not be where it was if we had not invited it to talk part in our Milan exercise. We were the hosts. I am told that as per protocol for this exercise ships cannot carry any ammunition. It was defenceless. The Iranian naval personnel had paraded before our president . The attack by the US submarine was premeditated as the US was aware of the Iranian ship’s presence in the exercise to which the US navy was invited but withdrew from participation at the last minute, presumably with this operation in mind,” he said in a post on X.

“The US has ignored India’s sensitivities as the ship was in these waters because of India’s invitation. We are far from politically or militarily responsible for the US attack. Our”responsibility” is at a moral and human plane. A word of condolence by the Indian Navy ( after political clearance) at the loss of lives of those who were our invitees and saluted our president would be in order,” he added.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that the United States will come to regret its action of destroying the Iranian vessel IRIS Dena with a torpedo hit in the Indian Ocean.

In a post on X, Araghchi said, “The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning. Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret precedent it has set.”

Araghchi’s comment follows the confirmation on Wednesday by United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth that an US submarine had sunk the Iranian warship “IRIS Dena”.

Around 180 people were onboard at the Iranian ship. Sri Lanka’s navy said it recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 people, who were admitted to a hospital in Galle, on the south of the island, Euro News reported. (ANI)

India Looking At Alternative Markets To Buy Gas Amid West Asia Conflict: Govt Sources

Australia and Canada have offered to sell gas to India as the country looks for other alternative energy sources amid the escalating West Asia conflict, government sources said on Thursday. The government is scouting for alternative markets to buy gas, as India currently imports 195 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) of gas, of which Qatar supplies 60 million mmscmd.

India is in talks with major oil producers and traders to buy crude and LPG. Sources said the government is in discussions with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). India is also in talks with the US to get insurance for ships.

The country recently signed a new contract with the UAE and the US to diversify its energy basket.

According to sources, India is reviewing the energy situation twice a day and is in a very comfortable position regarding its energy security. India’s current position of stock is also seen to be comfortable, with stock being replenished every day.

As per the sources, there is no shortage of LPG or LNG as well as crude oil, in the world. The sources noted that India is in touch with other suppliers as well.

Amid turmoil in West Asia, government sources on Tuesday said that India has a total of eight weeks of crude oil and petroleum products inventory, that includes strategic reserves, and only about 40 per cent of India’s crude oil imports transit through the Strait of Hormuz, significantly limiting exposure to regional disruptions.

They asserted that the country remains in a comfortable position on energy security amid the evolving situation in the West Asian region.

Sources said India is closely monitoring developments in the region but is well-prepared to manage any potential supply-side challenges due to adequate inventory levels and diversified sourcing.

According to sources, India currently has around 25 days of crude oil inventory. Additionally, the country maintains about 25 days of petrol and diesel inventory.

Overall, India has a total inventory cover of nearly eight weeks of crude oil and petroleum products, ensuring energy security in the event of short-term disruptions.

Only 40 per cent of India’s crude moves through the Strait of Hormuz, and 60 per cent of the rest of the crude comes from other sources

India continues to import Russian crude as per previous contracts.

The sources further stated that India is in a comfortable position with respect to LPG and LNG supplies.

The government, according to sources, is keeping a close watch on the global energy market to ensure uninterrupted supplies for the country. (ANI)
