West Asia Conflict Escalates: Hotel Attack in Erbil, Drones Over Saudi, Israel Strikes Hezbollah

Tensions continued to escalate across West Asia on Tuesday, with multiple incidents reported in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, according to various media outlets.

An Iraqi armed group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a hotel in Erbil that it alleges houses US troops, Al Jazeera reported.

In Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Defence Ministry said eight drones were intercepted and destroyed near the cities of Riyadh and Al-Kharj, according to Al Arabiya.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, IRNA News Agency reported that the Israeli regime attacked the headquarters of Al-Manar, a broadcaster affiliated with Hezbollah. According to IRNA, Al-Manar resumed broadcasting its programmes minutes after the reported strike. Earlier, Israel said that the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence arm was killed in an overnight strike and Beirut said it would ban the terror group’s military activities.

The Israel Defence Forces confirmed that the overnight strike in the Lebanese capital killed Hussein Makled, whom it called “the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters.”

The developments come amid heightened hostilities in West Asia, with cross-border strikes and aerial interceptions raising concerns about further regional spillover.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (local time) backed the US-Israeli military action against Iran as a part of Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion, noting that it protects not only the US, Israel, but also the world at large from ‘theological thuggery’.

In an interview with Fox News, the Israeli PM said, “It’s not a terrible thing to protect humanity, to protect America, to protect Israel, to protect the free world from this theological thuggery. These fanatics who don’t care — who just export death, mass death, everywhere.”

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of entering a “war of choice” on behalf of Israel, following remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defending recent American military action against Iran and emphasised the made-up ‘threat’ of Iran by the US.

In a post on X, Araghchi said on Tuesday, “Rubio admitted what we all knew: U.S. has entered a war of choice on behalf of Israel. There was never any so-called Iranian ‘threat’.”

He further stated, “Shedding of both American and Iranian blood is thus on Israel Firsters. The American people deserve better and should take back their country.”

Araghchi’s remarks came after Rubio said the US military operation against Iran was aimed at “eliminating” threats posed by Iran’s short-range ballistic missiles and its naval capabilities, particularly concerning risks to global shipping routes.

Speaking to the press on Capitol Hill on Monday (local time), Rubio made it clear that the primary goal of the operation was to neutralise Iran’s ballistic missile and naval threats.

“That is the clear objective of this mission,” Rubio said and added that the focus was on preventing a potential threat to the US and its allies. (ANI)

US Special Envoy Says Iran Insisted On Right To Enrich Nuclear Fuel

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has told Fox News that during the negotiations with Iran before Operation Epic Fury began, Iran insisted on having an “inalienable right” to enrich nuclear fuel while the US made it clear that if such an action takes place then America had the right to stop them.

In his remarks to Fox News, Witkoff said, “So just to give you a little bit of a taste of how these three days of negotiations went, three separate times Jared and I opened up with the Iranian negotiators telling us they had the inalienable right to enrich all the nuclear fuel that they possessed. That’s how they opened. We responded that the president feels we have the inalienable right to stop you dead in your tracks. They went on to say that beyond the inalienable right to enrich, that was going to be their starting point. And Jared and I just sort of looked at each other, flummoxed, and said, well, we’re really in for it now.”

His remarks come as a full-scale conflict erupted in West Asia involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, following a major “military offensive” launched on February 28. In a coordinated operation known as Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion, US and Israeli forces carried out large-scale air and missile strikes across Iran, targeting key military sites, nuclear-related infrastructure, and leadership compounds.

In response, Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles and drones at US assets and allies across the region, including Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, further widening the conflict and heightening risks for civilians and expatriates alike.

World leaders and international bodies are currently urging de-escalation as the risk of a wider regional conflict grows, though fighting continues without a clear end in sight.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (local time) backed the US-Israeli military action against Iran as a part of Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion noting that it protects not only US, Israel but also the world at large from ‘theological thuggery’.

He made the remarks in an interview to Fox News. The Israeli PM said, “It’s not a terrible thing to protect humanity, to protect America, to protect Israel, to protect the free world from this theological thuggery. These fanatics who don’t care — who just export death, mass death, everywhere.”

Netanyahu praised the leadership of Trump and added, “There’s never been a president like Donald J. Trump. His resoluteness, his decisiveness, his clarity of thinking, the way he gets things — gets right to the crux of things. He cuts through all the fluff, cuts through the chase, gets down to the main point, and it gets down to the main action that needs to be taken.”

US Vice-President JD Vance on Monday (local time) said President Donald Trump decided to take action against Iran in order to protect America’s national security. Vance added that Trump had determined to ensure America remains safe not only for a few years during his tenure as the President, but to ensure that Iran could ‘never’ to have a nuclear weapon. 30 Million And Rising: PM Modi Sets Global Benchmark Of Subscribers On YouTube

PM Narendra Modi has crossed the significant milestone of 30 million subscribers on YouTube, further cementing his position as the most-followed world leader on the platform.

Among world leaders, PM Modi has the highest number of subscribers on YouTube. As per the rankings, he is comfortably ahead of others in the category. The second-highest, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has a subscriber base that is only about one-fourth of PM Modi’s.

PM Modi has more than seven times the number of subscribers compared to US President Donald Trump, underlining the scale of his digital outreach and engagement worldwide.

Within India, the dominance and the popularity are clear. On the subscriber front, PM Modi has around three times more subscribers than Rahul Gandhi and over four times more than AAP and INC separately. With over 30 million subscribers, PM Modi’s YouTube channel stands as the most subscribed to globally.

This achievement comes Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier crossed the historic milestone of 100 million followers on Instagram, becoming the first world leader and politician to achieve this feat on the platform.

PM Modi joined Instagram in 2014. He has more than twice as many followers as US President Donald Trump on Instagram. The total count of followers of the next five major world leaders is lower than PM Modi’s individual follower count.US President Donald Trump holds the second spot with 43.2 million followers.

PM Modi is followed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto with 15 million followers, Brazilian President Lula with 14.4 million followers, Turkish President Erdogan with 11.6 million followers and Argentine President Javier Milei with 6.4 million followers. Moreover, within India as well, the gap in the number of followers is staggering.

The PM is miles ahead of other Indian political leaders on Instagram. The second spot is held by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with around 16.1 million followers, followed by Rahul Gandhi with approximately 12.6 million followers. (ANI)

‘Summits Alone Won’t Make India AI Hub; Infra Push, Skill Development Are Key’

Umesh Chand, Asst Prof, AI and Animation, Sharda University, says artificial intelligence thrives on data, and few nations can match the digital depth of India. His views:

The recent AI Summit is being criticised by some as mere optics and hype and being hailed by some as a signal of India’s rise as a global AI data centre hub cannot. In my view, an objective assessment about the event cannot be answered in such simplistic terms. India’s structural advantages are real and substantial. However, the true test lies in execution, sustainability, and long-term vision.

India’s digital public infrastructure — built on platforms such as UPI, Aadhaar, eCommerce systems, and widespread mobile connectivity — has already demonstrated how technology can operate at an unprecedented scale. We have a digitised population of over 1.4 billion citizens generating diverse datasets every day. This scale is India’s biggest strength. Artificial Intelligence thrives on data, and very few nations possess this kind of digital depth and breadth.

From an economic standpoint, I see India as strongly positioned to become a data powerhouse. Compared to the United States, Europe, or Singapore, land acquisition, labour, and operational costs are significantly lower here. This gives India a competitive edge in building hyperscale data centres.

The presence of global giants such as Microsoft, Google, and AWS expanding their cloud infrastructure in India signals long-term strategic commitment. At the same time, domestic conglomerates like Reliance and Adani are investing heavily in data parks and digital infrastructure, not as a temporary trend but as a foundational growth strategy.

Yet, infrastructure and cost advantages alone will not define India’s AI future. In my view, energy planning is perhaps the most critical factor. Data centres consume enormous amounts of electricity. Without reliable and sustainable energy sources, growth will face serious constraints.

Fortunately, India’s expanding renewable energy capacity — particularly in solar and wind — offers an opportunity to build green AI infrastructure. If we align AI expansion with sustainable energy planning, India can differentiate itself globally as both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

Another area that demands attention is policy stability. AI innovation flourishes in environments where regulations are clear, consistent, and innovation-friendly. Data protection frameworks, cyber-security policies, and cross-border data flow regulations must strike the right balance between security and openness.

As an academic working in AI and animation, I see immense talent among our students and researchers. What they need is an ecosystem that supports experimentation, protects intellectual property, and encourages product development rather than limiting them to service roles.

Most importantly, I believe India’s greatest asset is its people. Every year, we produce one of the world’s largest pools of engineers, developers, and AI researchers. Our start-up ecosystems in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, and Pune are already building AI-driven solutions in healthcare diagnostics, language technologies, financial inclusion, and smart logistics.

With focused skill development programs and stronger industry-academia collaboration, we can transition from being a service-driven economy to becoming a creator of AI products and infrastructure.

For me, the India AI Impact Summit 2026 should not be seen as an event of optics but as a moment of accountability. Announcements alone will not make India an AI hub. Sustained infrastructure investment, energy preparedness, regulatory consistency, and human capital development will determine whether we convert potential into leadership. If we remain disciplined and strategic, I am confident that India is not just participating in the AI revolution — we are poised to shape it.

Emirates added, “We are actively monitoring the situation and engaging with relevant authorities. We apologize to customers affected by disruptions for any inconvenience caused. The safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority.”

The flight suspensions and disruptions come amid escalating tensions in the West Asia after US-Israel joint military strikes on Iran that led to the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and his family.

Following the strikes, Iran also launched a wave of strikes, using drones and missiles targeting multiple arab countries in the region, which have resulted in airspace closures across the region and widespread impact on international aviation. (ANI)

IRGC Launches 10th Missile Wave At Tel Aviv After Israeli Strikes Kill Top Iranian Leaders

In a significant escalation of Middle Eastern hostilities, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Monday confirmed the commencement of the “tenth wave of the True Promise 4 Operation”, claiming to have struck a government complex in Tel Aviv alongside targets in East Al-Quds (Jerusalem), according to reports from Tasnim News.

In its ninth official statement, the IRGC’s Public Relations Department detailed the deployment of “Khaybar missiles” during this phase of the offensive.

The department asserted that the strike “opened doors to a massive inferno” across various occupied territories, marking a major peak in the ongoing aerial campaign.

Alongside the strikes, the IRGC issued a stern warning to residents within the occupied territories, advising them to “evacuate immediately from areas near military bases, security centres, and governmental facilities.”

According to Tasnim News, this latest wave specifically prioritised the government hub in Tel Aviv, as well as high-security and military installations in Haifa and East Al-Quds.

This follows previous declarations by the IRGC, maintaining that “siren sounds in Israel would never cease,” suggesting a period of persistent alerts.

Tasnim News further reports that “illegal settlers” have been urged to stay clear of military or administrative buildings and to “evacuate immediately from the occupied territories” to avoid fallout from the missile volleys.

Amidst these exchanges, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced the elimination of top-tier members of the Iranian regime’s Ministry of Intelligence during a military offensive dubbed Operation ‘Roaring Lion’.

In a statement released on X on Monday, the IDF confirmed that the strikes targeted high-ranking figures within Tehran’s intelligence apparatus.

Among those killed was Sayed Yahya Hamidi, identified as the “Deputy Minister of Intelligence for ‘Israel Affairs,’ who led terrorist activities targeting Jews, Western actors, and regime opponents in Iran and abroad”.

The military also confirmed the death of Jalal Pour Hossein, the “Head of the Espionage Division”.

According to the IDF, the mission was “Guided by precise IDF intelligence,” and the officials “were targeted and eliminated during the opening strike of Operation ‘Roaring Lion'”.

The IDF further noted that “Additional senior officials were also eliminated” and stated that “The IAF also struck the Ministry’s headquarters in Tehran”.

This latest escalation follows a full-scale conflict that erupted in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, following a major “military offensive” launched on February 28.

In a coordinated operation known as Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion, US and Israeli forces carried out large-scale air and missile strikes across Iran, targeting key military sites, nuclear-related infrastructure, and leadership compounds.

World leaders and international bodies are currently urging de-escalation as the risk of a wider regional conflict grows, though fighting continues without a clear end in sight. (ANI)

Union MoS Khadse Announces Nationwide ASMITA League For Women’s Day

In a unique initiative to celebrate women in sport, a massive nationwide athletics league at 250 locations will be held under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) programme to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8.

This was announced by Minister of State, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, here on Monday, as per a release from the Sports Authority of India.

“There can’t be a better opportunity to integrate our young women across the nation, and what better tool than using the ASMITA platform that is already gaining in popularity across the length and breadth of the country,” said Khadse at a media conference held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here.

ASMITA is part of Khelo India’s gender-neutral mission to promote sports among women through leagues and competitions. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) supports National Sports Federations to conduct Khelo India women’s leagues across multiple age groups at both zonal and national levels.

Started in 2021, ASMITA leagues not only aim to increase the participation of women in sports but also to utilise the leagues as a platform for the identification of new talent across the length and breadth of India.

So far, more than 2600 leagues have been conducted across 34 sports disciplines in over 550 districts and 700 cities in the country. Significantly, ASMITA has reached the farthest corners of the country, like Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram in the North-east. It has also been held in areas that were once tormented by Naxalism. More than 300,000 women have taken part.

Khadse said events will be conducted at 250 locations nationwide, focusing on athletics (100m, 200m, 400m) across the age groups of Under-13, 13-18 years and 18+ categories. Each venue will deploy 5 technical officials, 10 volunteers, one competition manager, one PCA (Past Champion Athlete) and a District Youth Officer. It is expected that a record 2,50,000 women will participate on a single day to celebrate International Women’s Day.

This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with MY Bharat, Khelo India Centres (KICs), SAI ecosystem & NCOEs, State & District Sports Associations, as well as District Youth Officers (DYOs).

“The League will be organised in more than 30 States and Union Territories, including the North-east States. The objective is to encourage more and more girls in villages and small towns to take up sports as a career, as is envisioned by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Smt Khadse said.

As India prepares for the Commonwealth Games 2030 and pursues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games, Smt Khadse said, “We must understand that readiness begins at the district level. Hosting an Olympic Games requires more than infrastructure. It requires trained human resources in every district of India. It requires certified technical officials. It requires administrative excellence. This International Women’s Day initiative is part of that preparation.”

Each athletics event at 250 different locations will also include women technical officials, developmental workshops and introduction to Athletics Federation of India-aligned officiating norms as well as digital data upload and competition documentation training to ensure capacity building. (ANI)

Modi Unveils $50 BN Trade Target With Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday outlined a bold vision for India-Canada relations, aiming to take bilateral trade to $50 billion through the lens of a “light-year leap” and strategic synergy after the leadership change in Canada (with Mark Carney as PM), leading to a strategic “reset.”

Addressing the India-Canada CEO Forum, PM Modi highlighted that PM Carney has been in office for less than a year; however, established a “new chapter.”

“Friends, today we are going to write a new chapter in India-Canada relations,” he said. “Prime Minister Carney has not even completed one year in office, but our relations have taken a light-year leap. In the last few months, trust has grown, clarity has emerged, and a new momentum has been built.”

PM Modi declared that bilateral ties are entering a transformative phase and called on business leaders to power the next stage of growth alongwith emphasis on bilateral trade targets and finalisation of CEPA, noting that the renewed engagement comes amid global economic challenges.

“And this is happening at a time when the world is going through a period of economic uncertainty. The global economic order is under pressure. At such a time, the deliberation of business leaders from India and Canada will prepare a new blueprint for our partnership,” said PM Modi.

Highlighting the shared foundations of the relationship, PM Modi said, “India and Canada are vibrant democracies, two major economies of the world, and societies based on shared values. Democracy, diversity, and development inspire us to move forward as natural partners. “

On trade and economic cooperation, the Prime Minister said, “Prime Minister Carney and I took some important decisions to advance our shared vision. We are continuously moving forward to take bilateral trade to the level of 50 billion dollars. We will finalise the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement as soon as possible.”

He underlined the role of industry in realising the vision.” Governments can create frameworks and provide policy direction. However, the power to turn that vision into reality lies with all of you, my fellow business leaders.”

Calling India one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, PM Modi said, “India is among the world’s fastest-growing major economies. Behind this transformation are strong domestic demand, a young population, large-scale investment, and the power of digital technology. This is the result of our continuously running Reform Express. From policy simplification to Production Linked Incentives (PLI), and from logistics modernisation to tax and bankruptcy reforms, we are strengthening the ease of doing business in every sector.”

PM Modi framed the relationship not through the lens of past grievances, but through a $6 trillion economic force to be throttled forward.

He added, “When India and Canada stand together, we don’t just connect two economies. We create an economic force of capital and capability. Our combined GDP is more than 6 trillion dollars. But our real strength lies in our ambitions. To move these shared ambitions forward, I will make some suggestions to you.”

PM Modi highlighted opportunities for collaboration in clean energy, infrastructure, AI, manufacturing, and food processing.

Outlining five priority areas, PM Modi said, “First, Clean Energy: This is a priority for both countries. Today, we have increased cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and contracted for a long-term supply of uranium. A while ago, we had the opportunity to hear positive thoughts from the CEO of Cameco. We should move forward together in the fields of small modular reactors, advanced reactors, and the nuclear value chain,” he called for joint progress in small modular reactors and the nuclear value chain.

On critical minerals, he said, ” We have also taken steps to create resilient supply chains for critical minerals. We can move forward by combining Canada’s innovation with India’s scaling capability in batteries and energy storage.”

On infrastructure, he said, “The second area is Infrastructure and Capital Partnership: In this year’s budget, we have made a record allocation of 130 billion dollars for infrastructure. Under the National Infrastructure Pipeline, an investment of 1.3 trillion dollars is being made. Canada’s pension funds have invested 100 billion dollars in India. This shows deep trust. I invite you to become a part of India’s infrastructure growth story.”

Turning to technology, PM Modi proposed, “Third, AI: We can work together to create joint AI compute corridors and AI innovation sandboxes for startups.” He also emphasised collaboration in electronics, aerospace, and engineering and highlighted food processing as another strong avenue for cooperation.

He said, “Fourth, Manufacturing and Technology: In electronics, aerospace, and engineering, we can strengthen global value chains by combining Canada’s technology and India’s scale.”

He added, “The fifth area is Food Processing: Today, mega food parks, cold chains, and food testing labs are being built rapidly in India. This could be another strong example of our win-win cooperation.”

Stressing the importance of substantial partnerships, he said, “Our partnership should not be limited only to national capitals. We must take it to the states and provinces. We must link Alberta’s natural resources with the renewable ambitions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. We must combine Ontario’s manufacturing strength with the industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. We must integrate Montreal’s tech ecosystem with the innovation hubs of Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Only then can we turn this partnership from policy to prosperity.”

In a lighter moment, PM Modi referenced cricket diplomacy. He said, “Some of you must be watching cricket. We were all happy to see Canada play in the T20 Cricket World Cup going on in India. Just like in T20 cricket, with fast decisions, fearless strokes, and match-winning partnerships, India and Canada will shape the future together.”

“With this resolve, I invite all of you to join India’s development journey,” the Prime Minister concluded. (ANI)
