Geopolitical Turmoil Will Hurt Indian Economy: Bernstein

India’s macro outlook faces rising risks amid escalating US-Iran tensions and a sustained spike in crude oil prices, noted a report by global equity research and brokerage firm Bernstein.

The report cautions that the current geopolitical shock could expose structural vulnerabilities in the Indian economy if it persists, noting that “a prolonged period of elevated crude and tighter external financing conditions could play out for India’s macro.”

Highlighting historical parallels, Bernstein warned of a potential “GFC moment,” recalling that after the global financial crisis, “India’s economic growth slipped from ~10% to 5%, inflation spiked to 10%, and rupee depreciated 30%.”

The report underscored that crude remains a key pressure point, stating that “the crude price threatens to push inflation back above the tolerance range,” while also flagging risks to growth and external balances.

In a worst-case scenario involving a prolonged conflict through 2026, Bernstein said the repercussions could be severe, including “double-digit inflation, economic growth in 2-3% range, rupee beyond 110 and nifty going well below 20,000.”

Even under more moderate assumptions, the outlook remains challenging. The report expects “realistic chances of inflation breaching 6% this summer,” which could delay monetary easing, with “rate cuts to get pushed for two quarters at the least, and GDP growth to taper.”

On external accounts, elevated crude prices are likely to widen imbalances. Bernstein noted that “elevated crude and trade almost go hand in hand,” potentially leading to a surge in the merchandise trade deficit and pressure on the current account.

Currency pressures are also building, with the report warning that “it is only a matter of time before 97-98 levels for the Rupee are breached” if hostilities persist.

Despite the possibility of near-term de-escalation, Bernstein emphasised that structural damage may already be underway, stating “a structural change has happened already,” with crude unlikely to return to earlier low levels this year.

Summing up the broader impact, the report warned that sustained geopolitical stress could materially hit growth, with “the potential to set back the growth by 3-4 years,” adding that even in less severe scenarios, the environment could “shelve a full percentage point off the annual GDP growth.”

Bernstein maintained a cautious stance on markets, advising that “waiting out for clear signals, in such times, is often the best strategy,” amid elevated uncertainty driven by geopolitics rather than fundamentals. (ANI)

Houthi Rebels Fire First Missile Against Israel

A missile was launched on Saturday morning from Yemen towards Israel, making the attack the first by the Houthis since “Operation Roaring Lion” began a month ago, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

According to the Jerusalem Post, citing the military, air defence systems were activated to intercept the threat, as sirens sounded across Beersheba and surrounding communities in the Negev.

According to the news report, there are no immediate reports of casualties or direct impacts.

The first missile launch comes as Yemeni Armed Forces on Friday declared readiness for direct military intervention if “American-Israeli aggression” against Iran and the “Axis of Resistance” (regional resistance) groups continues to escalate, according to Iranian State Media Press TV.

“We confirm that our hands are on the trigger for direct military intervention,” spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said as quoted by Press TV in a statement on Friday.

The warning came nearly a month after the United States and Israel launched what Press TV described as “the latest bout of unprovoked aggression targeting the Islamic Republic”, alongside intensified operations against groups aligned with the “Axis of Resistance”.

Saree said intervention could also be triggered by the involvement of additional parties in the conflict or the use of the Red Sea to carry out hostile operations against Iran or other “Muslim” countries. “We will not allow that,” he asserted as per Press TV.

As per Press TV, he stated that Yemen’s stance is rooted in a “religious and moral responsibility” amid a broader campaign targeting not only the “Islamic Republic”, but also the “Resistance Axis and the wider Muslim world”.

The statement, as per Press TV, further alleged that the “aggression” is linked to Israel’s so-called “Greater Israel” ambitions, accusing Tel Aviv of seeking territorial expansion across West Asia. It described Yemen’s position as part of the “legitimate right” of regional populations to confront such plans and those backing them.

Saree added that Yemeni forces are motivated by regional cooperation and the aim of inflicting a “major defeat” on “aggressors”, while aligning with broader support for Muslim nations facing conflict.

The spokesperson also issued demands, urging the United States and Israel to respond to diplomatic efforts to end hostilities. He described the attacks as “unjust, oppressive, and unjustified” actions “that harms global and regional stability and security and harms the global economy.”

The statement, according to Press TV, called for implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which was signed last October under a US-backed plan aimed at ending the conflict.

It also warned against increasing pressure on Yemen, cautioning against any tightening of the blockade on the country, the Press TV reported. (ANI)

Nepal Ex-PM Oli Arrested For Suppression of GenZ Protests

Former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been arrested by Nepal Police from his residence in Bhaktapur, in connection with an alleged culpable-homicide-related case linked to the alleged suppression of the September 2025 Gen Z-led anti-corruption protests.

Nepali Congress leader and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak was also arrested earlier from his residence. The arrests follow a formal complaint filed by the Home Ministry, which triggered an investigation and led to the issuance of arrest warrants.

According to a report in the Kathmandu Post, police officials said the action is being carried out to implement recommendations made by a commission led by former Special Court judge Gauri Bahadur Karki.

The commission recommended that Oli, Lekhak and then Inspector General of Police Chandra Kuber Khapung be charged under Sections 181 and 182 of the National Penal Code for criminal negligence, with a proposed prison sentence of up to 10 years.

The report also recommends action against then-home secretary Gokarna Mani Dawadi, Armed Police Force chief Raju Aryal, former head of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and then-chief district officer of Kathmandu Chhabi Rijal, suggesting prosecution under Section 182 of the code.

It further recommends that other officials found responsible be dealt with under the respective laws governing their organisations. The report attributes the crackdown to criminal negligence and recklessness, citing failure to act on prior intelligence about possible escalation that led to multiple deaths.

During the Gen Z protests in Nepal in September 2025, a total of 77 people were killed, while government and private property worth billions were destroyed.

A Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Friday decided to implement the commission’s report, paving the way for legal action against those named.

The first Cabinet meeting also decided to form a study committee to look into matters related to security personnel, based on the recommendations of the Karki Commission.

The Cabinet decided to form a separate investigation committee to examine the role of security agencies, and it will be implemented immediately in cases involving political leaders and others.

The newly formed government has publicised the decisions taken at its first Cabinet meeting held on Friday.Apart from that, the first meeting of rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah also took four major decisions, including the implementation of the report of the commission formed to investigate the suppression of the Gen-Z movement.

The Cabinet decided to express respect and pay tribute to all known and unknown martyrs of the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025, as well as to the martyrs of earlier movements. It also appointed Sasmit Pokharel, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, as the official spokesperson of the Government of Nepal. (ANI)

Injured Dhoni Likely to Miss First Two Weeks of IPL Contests

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Indian cricketing icon MS Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to a calf strain, announced the franchise on Saturday.

A statement issued by the Yellow franchise said, “MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026. Get well soon, Thala!”

CSK will be starting the season on March 30 against the 2008 champions, Rajasthan Royals, at Guwahati, with the former RR player Sanju Samson now having joined the Yellow franchise and the veteran CSK, India legend Ravindra Jadeja getting a homecoming to RR after a trade ahead of the auction. The trade also involved English all-rounder Sam Curran being traded from CSK to RR, but the pace bowling all-rounder will miss out the tournament due to injury.

It has long been speculated that this season, after all, could be Dhoni’s last season, with his knee issues persisting. Dhoni even acknowledged his declining level of fitness during the ‘ROAR 26’ fan event at Chepauk stadium recently, saying that “it is on the way down”. These fitness, age and knee-related issues have caused him to shift to the lower-middle-order and unleash some big hits during the death overs phase, preserving his body and also entertaining the ‘Thala Kingdom’.

With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the franchise for a while and the franchise roping in a fan favourite wicketkeeping option in Samson and investing Rs 14.20 crores in uncapped Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, the speculations of IPL 2026 being Dhoni’s swangsong have only intensified, with these investments looked as preparations for a life after Dhoni for CSK.

In 278 matches, Dhoni has made 5,439 runs in 242 innings at an average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45, including 24 fifties and a best score of 84. He is the sixth-highest run-getter in the tournament history. In last season’s wooden spoon finish, Dhoni scored 196 runs in 13 innings at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of over 135, with a best score of 30. (ANI)

IRGC Claims Impact-Driven Strike On Al-Kharj Base

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has claimed the destruction of several US refuelling vehicles and a logistical support fleet during the latest phase of its ongoing military campaign. According to a report by Iran’s state-owned Press TV, the strike was carried out as part of the “84th wave of Operation True Promise 4.”

The IRGC issued a statement on Friday explaining that the mission was launched in response to the “hostile exploitation of regional airbases by the terrorist US regime.”

The operation was described as a “special joint missile and drone operation during wave 84,” conducted by the IRGC Aerospace Force with assistance from the IRGC Navy.

Elaborating on the tactical details, the military wing noted that its units “destroyed anti-missile defence systems and successfully penetrated the Al-Kharj base with solid- and liquid-fuelled missiles.”

Press TV reported that the forces specifically aimed at the “stationed refuelling and air support fleet with a barrage of missile and drone fire” located at the facility.

The IRGC characterised the mission as an “impact-driven” operation, asserting that the strikes led to the destruction or severe damage of multiple wide-body and heavy support aircraft belonging to US forces.

According to Press TV, this 84th wave was dedicated to the employees and martyrs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

This follows a sustained campaign involving 83 previous strikes targeting military assets across the region, including facilities in the occupied territories and US occupation bases.

The escalation in retaliatory strikes began following the February 28 military action by the US-Israeli coalition, which resulted in the killing of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders and over 170 schoolchildren in Minab.

Press TV further highlighted that groups such as the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have joined this regional front.

These coordinated efforts by the Iranian armed forces and allied resistance groups have reportedly decimated the enemy’s “military and strategic infrastructure,” inflicting significant blows on their logistical capabilities. (ANI)
