India Supplies 5,000 Tons Of Diesel To Bangladesh Amid Fuel Crisis

Amid the energy crisis in Bangladesh caused by the conflict in West Asia, India has supplied an additional 5,000 tons of diesel, a senior government official said on Friday night.

“An additional 5,000 tons of diesel have arrived in Bangladesh from India. With this, Bangladesh has now received a total of 15,000 tons of diesel from India in recent times,” Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager (Commercial), Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), told ANI over the phone.

“On March 28, pumping will be done to send an additional 6,000 tons of diesel to Bangladesh,” he added.

“In the coming month of April, India has proposed to supply 40,000 tons of diesel to Bangladesh. We have officially accepted this proposal,” Azad said, without elaborating.

The diesel is being supplied from the refinery located at Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, India, via a pipeline through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline to Parbatipur depot in Bangladesh.

The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline was halted after the mass movement against the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024.

After the general election in February, the current government, led by Tarique Rahman, took office, and the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline was resumed. Through this pipeline, 15,000 tons of diesel have been delivered so far.

“Bangladesh’s annual diesel demand is 4 million tons, which is entirely met through imports from abroad,” Ezaz Ahmed, an energy expert, told ANI.

“The crude oil, imported from abroad in half a million tons, can be refined at Bangladesh’s Eastern Refinery and used. The remaining diesel, of course, is directly imported as refined diesel,” Ahmed added.

Bangladesh imports diesel primarily from India, Singapore, and the Middle East. (ANI)

Murshidabad, WB: Clash Erupts At 3 Places During Ram Navami Procession, Sec 144 Imposed

A clash erupted in Raghunathganj, Murshidabad, at three separate locations, between two communities, during a Ram Navami procession.

The violence escalated, involving acts of vandalism against shops and establishments, looting, and arson, and several individuals sustained injuries.

Central forces and the local police subsequently arrived and took control of the area.

Officials said Section 144, prohibiting the assembly of four or more people, has been imposed across the entire town. The atmosphere remains tense.

DIG of the area, Ajit Singh Yadav, declared that authorities are trying to identify the culprits through CCTV footage, vowing to take strict action against the perpetrators.

“In view of the clash that took place at the Ram Navami procession, we have deployed additional forces and senior officers. Currently, the situation is under control; as you can see, traffic has returned to normal. However, we have dispatched our raid teams, and raids are being conducted at various locations. Additional forces from the CRPF and CAPF are also arriving from outside to properly normalise and dominate the area. The culprits will not be spared; we are identifying them using CCTV footage. We will take strict action against whoever was involved, and no one will be spared,” Yadav told reporters.

Further details are awaited. (ANI)

‘Part of the Blame for a Weakened Federal Structure Lies With Greedy Regional Parties Too’

Dev Chand Uttarakhandi is the kendriya mahamantri and spokesperson of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, the oldest regional political party in Uttarakhand, established to fight for a separate hill state. In a no-holds barred interview with LokMarg’s Rajat Rai, he lambasts the current BJP-led Centre for using investigation agencies like ED, CBI and even Election Commission to usurp power in every state by hook or crook. Excerpts:

Q. The original motive behind the formation of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal was rooted in regional development and, hence, also federal structure. However, it was Central parties which have ruled the state since its formation. How do you see this alleged ‘injustice’?

Ans. Ever since the UKD came into existence in 1979, our sole motto was a separate hill state with autonomy in everything – from resources, employment to locals and everything related to us. We had a 30-point demand for the formation of a separate state and it was Deve Gowda who gave a positive consideration to our demand. However, the state came into existence only in the year 2000 with much of our demands yet to be fulfilled.

We are the only regional political entity in the state and with our three to four legislators in the beginning we supported both the Congress and the BJP in the formation of the government in the years 2002 and 2007. However, both the governments ditched us, forcing us to part ways but we have continued with our battle for the rights of the indigenous people of the state. We are still fighting for the original cause of our region and our people. We hope someday the people will give us an opportunity to serve them.

Q. Do you believe federalism, where power is decentralised, is steadily getting weakened after Narendra Modi took over the Centre in 2014? Please give examples to support your view.

A. It was due to the untiring efforts of Sardar Valabh Bhai Patel that the Rajwadas and the princely states of India were united after Independence and since the very first day, all the central governments have tried to run states from the Centre. However, federalism has been hit harder since the BJP came to power in 2014 and it is not a good practice to seize the powers of state governments and try running the states from the Centre. Free and independent state governments, working in collaboration with the Centre, are important for the all-round and speedy development of any state. But the tradition is slowly dying or fading away and it is very dangerous for a healthy democracy.

Q. There have been allegations that increasingly there is lesser space for regional parties to prosper because and the BJP wants a strong Centre which can influence areas and powers that fall under States list. How far do you find such allegations true?

A. It is a known fact that the governance model and the work culture of the BJP is, in a way, inspired or nourished by the RSS. It has also become a tradition of the BJP to form state governments by hook or by crook if they do not win an absolute majority. The biggest losers are the regional parties like us whose existence depends on their state related local issues which hardly matters for national parties when they come to power in states. And above that, there are central agencies like ED and CBI who work hand in glove with them to ensure dominance over regional parties that lack in all kind of resources. This certainly is a reason why regional parties are losing significance gradually.

Q. Are minorities in Uttarakhand feeling increasingly targeted amid a rise in Hindutva forces? We saw several such instances in the past be it Uttarakashi or Haldwani. Please substantiate your views with examples.

A. Both the BJP and the Congress are provoking such issues in the manner which suits them. Since the years soon after Independence i.e. early 1950s, the population of minorities (including Christians, Jains, Buddhs, etc) was around 10 to 15 per cent and there was a cordial atmosphere in the region as everyone (including minorities) fought shoulder to shoulder for the cause of a separate hill state.

However, after the formation of the state, the Muslim population increased rapidly and in some regions, it now stands at 25 to 30 per cent with people flooding in from states like West Bengal. Who is to blame: The Congress for its vote bank or the BJP milking the issue for its convenience? They also impact election results now in four to five constituencies and a burning example is regional parties of UP like Samajwadi Party and BSP winning seats in Uttarakhand! It is also surprising that an MP from BJP (Ajay Bhatt) is also advocating including minorities in SC, ST reservation. Is it not a bid to eat on the basic rights of the SCs and STs of the state? We are hopeful the issue is addressed by the SIR which is a good initiative and will add to the cause of the locals.

Q. What are the limitations and challenges before a regional party like UKD while countering a powerful political network like the BJP? Do they lack moneybags or muscle power even when they have popular support?

A. I still admire the late Atal Bihari Vajpaee and a person of principles like him will never be born. No doubt that the BJP is the most powerful (in terms of money and muscle power) party in the country but it also has an added advantage of the Election Commission and the ED. Their principle seems to be clear: if you cannot overpower a person or party with the legal means, let loose the government institutions and they will do it for you. Let me give you a recent example. The serving CM of Uttarakhand was seeking votes for his mayoral candidate in the Srinagar district where, during a public speech, he openly threatened people by saying that if you do not vote for him the developmental works and schemes will not reach here. This is how they threaten or manipulate voters.

Q. The BJP is seen as cannibalizing on its own regional allies, gradually weakening them and then pushing them to margins. This was seen in Maharashtra recently. Why do think BJP feels threatened by regional political groups, including its own allies?

A. You cannot blame BJP or Congress for this – it is the greed of the regional parties that is costing them their existence. If you, just with two or three or 1 seat, bow down to the stronger party just for the sake of getting a ministerial berth of red and blue beacon, it is not the fault of the ruling party. It is you who is compromising with your principals and the faith that the people have entrusted in you. A stronger competitor is bound to end smaller ones just to secure its future and it depends on the morality of the regional parties either to surrender for instant gains or to stand with its principles for the cause of its people and its region.

Q. Do you believe that Uttarakhand Kranti Dal has a future like Trinamool in Bengal, BJD in Orissa or DMK in Tamil Nadu? Elaborate why?

A. We definitely are a very small force but people in the UK are getting aware gradually and are getting associated with us. We put all our efforts in every election, from local body to Panchayat to Vidhan Sabha and the Lok Sabha and it is never the end of roads after any elections. We will contest with full force and commitment in the upcoming 2027 Vidhan Sabha election and then the 2029 general elections and all other small and big elections to come.

We ignited a large movement – for an autonomous hill state long ago and slowly, our motive is being perceived well by the natives (Uttarakhandis). We will make it big someday as we are connecting with the people with an honest motive. We admit that we do not have any money or muscle power but our honesty and commitment will yield results some day and we may be in a position to ask what we wanted from day one for our state.

Virat Gets New Full Sleeve Tattoo With Lotus Element Ahead Of IPL 2026

Virat Kohli’s love for tattoos is well known. The star batter, who already sports several tattoos, recently got inked again, just a few days before the start of IPL 2026.

The studio behind Kohli’s new tattoo, Aliens Tattoo, provided an in-depth glimpse into the design of the former RCB skipper’s ink on his left arm.

As per Aliens Tattoo, the design of Kohli’s ink symbolises his personal evolution over the years. Instead of just adding a single design, the intention was to craft a unified piece that blends his past experiences with his present mindset.

The artwork features motifs such as the lotus and peony, which are commonly linked to resilience and growth. The personal meaning of each element was intentionally kept private.

The project involved artists meticulously working with Virat Kohli’s existing tattoos, including an incomplete armband inspired by Shiva, alongside other designs reflecting various stages of his life.

“His left arm was not a blank canvas. It already carried years of ink, an incomplete armband, older tattoos, elements that belonged to different phases of his life. Some had aged. Some had lost their clarity. Some no longer reflected the precision and intent they once held. The approach was deliberate. Some parts needed to be covered. Some needed to be refined and restored. And much more needed to be added — with purpose. To take scattered fragments and transform them into a single, cohesive sleeve that flows as one,” according to Aliens Tattoo.

Meanwhile, on the cricket front, Virat will be eyeing another fiery IPL season with the bat that would keep the crowds happy and statisticians busy.

Currently at 8,661 runs in 267 matches with eight centuries and 63 fifties, Virat will also be aiming to become the first player to reach the 9,000 run mark in IPL history.

Having made 9,085 runs in 282 matches for RCB across IPL and now-defunct Champions League T20, Virat is one extraordinary season away from becoming the first-ever player to score 10,000 runs for a single IPL team in all of T20 cricket.

Having made 13,543 runs in 414 T20Is, including nine centuries and 105 fifties, Virat will also be aiming to join West Indies titans Chris Gayle (14,562 runs), Kieron Pollard (14,482 runs), England’s Alex Hales (14,449 runs), and Australian legend David Warner (14,028 runs) as the fifth member of the 14,000-run club in T20 cricket.

Last season, Virat scored 657 runs in 15 innings at an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 144.71, with eight fifties to his name, finishing as the team’s leading run-getter and third-highest run-getter overall. (ANI)

Saudi Arabia Intercepts Fresh Drone Strikes Over Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry has announced that its air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed two additional drones targeting the Riyadh region. According to a report by Al Jazeera, this marks the second aerial assault directed at the Saudi capital within the span of a single hour.

The ministry noted that in a preceding attack earlier today, military defences downed two drones. Meanwhile, four other unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly fell into the Arabian Gulf or landed in uninhabited open areas. As detailed by Al Jazeera, the Saudi military remains on high alert following these back-to-back attempts to strike the capital and surrounding zones.

Adding to the scale of the aerial threat, Major General Turki Al-Malki, the spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Defence, confirmed that 17 drones were successfully intercepted and destroyed over the Kingdom’s Eastern Region. According to a report by Gulf News, this defensive action comes amidst a period of heightened regional activity that has impacted travel and logistics across the country.

In response to these volatile conditions, the Saudi Ministry of Interior has launched a new initiative to address the legal status of foreign nationals holding expired visit, Umrah, and transit visas, as well as those with final exit permits. Gulf News detailed that the move follows significant disruptions that have prevented many individuals from departing the Kingdom as originally planned.

The ministry stated that these corrective measures are specifically applicable to visas that reached their expiry date from February 26. Under the new guidelines, affected individuals have been provided with two distinct avenues to regularise their stay or facilitate their departure amidst the ongoing instability.

The first option allows for the extension of expired visas upon a formal request by the host. This extension, which is valid until April 18, can be processed via the Absher platform following the payment of the standard applicable fees.

As reported by Gulf News, a second alternative has been established for those wishing to leave the country immediately. Visa holders will be permitted to exit through international ports without the requirement to extend their current visas or settle any overstay fines and fees.

The Ministry of Interior emphasised that these steps are designed to assist visitors and residents caught in the current situation. The policy aims to maintain orderly travel operations across the Kingdom’s borders while ensuring all residents remain in compliance with national regulations.

Gulf News further noted that the initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to facilitating smooth procedures for those unable to leave due to the prevailing regional circumstances. (ANI)

‘Defence Shall Persist As Long As It Is Needed’, Iranian FM Araghchi At UN

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday slammed the United States and Israel for the attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran, most notably the Minab Elementary Girls’ school which killed over 160 people. Calling the actions a war crime, he urged the world to come together against the injustice towards Iran and underlined that the country would continue to defend itself as long as needed.

He made the remarks while virtually addressing the UN debate over the fatal school strike in Iran.

“Indifference and silence in the face of injustices would bring no security and peace. It would invite more insecurity and right violations. The United Nations and the core values it embodies as well as the overall human rights framework are at serious stake. You all need to call out the aggressors and let them know that the community of states, the human collective conscience hold them accountable for the abhorrent crimes they are committing against Iranians”, Araghchi said.

He underlined that while Iran has never sought a war, it would, however, continue to defend itself as long as needed.

“Iran has never sought war. Iranians are a peaceful noble nation inheriting one of the richest civilizations on Earth. Yet they have demonstrated absolute resolve and determination to defend themselves against the brutal perpetrators who know no boundary in perpetrating all sorts of crimes. The defence shall persist as long as it is needed.”

He slammed the strike at the school as “deliberate and intentional”, saying that it took place despite the US and Israel possessing cutting-edge technology and military data systems.

“This atrocity cannot be justified, concealed and must not be met with silence and indifference”, he added.

He highlighted that several other civilian infrastructure has been targeted in the US-Israeli strikes and said that in the last 27 days, which includes Red Crescent rescuers, refineries, ambulances, hospitals, health workers, water sources and residential areas. “More than 600 schools have been demolished or damaged across Iran and more than 1000 students and teachers have been martyred or wounded as a result.”

The Iranian Foreign Minsiter said that war-crimes does not describe the depth of atrocities being committed against Iran.

“The aggressors’ targeting pattern accompanied by their rhetoric leaves little doubt as to their clear intent to commit genocide”, he added.

Calling it an “unjust war of whims” against Iran, Araghchi urged the world to act saying that the values of United Nations are at stake.

The remarks come as US-Israeli strikes continue to target key infrastructure in Iran. Earlier, US President Trump signalled a thaw in operations against Iran, saying that Iran had sought a seven-day pause on American strikes targeting its energy infrastructure, but he decided to extend the window to 10 days to April 6, however the strikes by the combined US-Israel forces continue. “No Lockdown Planned,” Nirmala Sitharaman Dismisses West Asia Crisis Rumours

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has dismissed reports that suggested the government could consider a lockdown like measure as fuel shortages loomed.

The Finance Minister called such reports baseless and said that there was no such move being considered

“I want to reassure people that there shall not be any lockdown. I am surprised that some leaders are saying there will be a lockdown and there will be shortages of fuel. These are baseless. Such remarks coming from those in political domains are worrisome. There will be no lockdown such as we saw during Covid. I want to reassure people that there shall be no such lockdown as we saw in Covid,” she said.

Earlier, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, also made it clear that there will be no lockdown of the country, which was previously implemented during the pandemic period. The Minister also criticised rumours of lockdown, calling it “irresponsible and harmful.”

“Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. Let me state this clearly, there is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India. In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united. Attempts to spread rumours and create panic in such a situation are irresponsible and harmful,” Puri said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister said the main aim of pushing excise duty cuts for Petrol and Diesel was to insulate consumers from the rising price of Crude Oil due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

“First of all, whenever such a crisis comes in the world and its impact falls on India, before this whether it was COVID or now, the way the Honourable Prime Minister immediately responds to it is so that the burden doesn’t fall on the public and the public doesn’t face any difficulty or shortage of petrol, diesel, and LPG. For this reason, now, because prices are rising in the international market of crude oil, and because of that, petrol, diesel, and ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel), the Honourable Prime Minister wanted the consumer price not to increase. For that reason, we have decided to support Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) so that the government will help them with the things they are buying at higher prices, but the rate should not be increased for the public,” she said.

“Yesterday, on the day of Ram Navami, the Honourable Prime Minister called an emergency meeting and held a discussion on these topics and immediately took a decision. And whatever work had to be done, our ministry and the Petroleum Ministry sat together last night and did the work, and today we are announcing this decision,” she added.

The Finance Minister said another aim of the excise cuts was to protect the Oil Marketing companies which were facing issues because of the cost of crude oil shooting up. This she said would also ensure there is no shortage in fuel supplies.

“Prices are increasing abroad, because of which oil marketing companies might stop buying–such a situation should not occur. They should continue to buy, bring it in, and make arrangements to ensure our public gets the right quantity at the right time. That’s why, due to this decision today, there will be no shortage in supply, no shortage in availability, and the public will get diesel, petrol, and crude,” the FM said.

The government on Friday slashed excise duties for petrol and diesel bringing them down to Rs 3 per litre of petrol and zero for a litre of diesel. Windfall tax on export of diesel has been set at 21.5 rupees/litre.

The reduction comes amid a global energy crisis due to the US-Israel war on Iran and the consequent Tehran-imposed blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s crude oil and gas supply, between 20 and 25 million barrels per day, is shipped. Before the conflict, India bought 12 to 15 per cent of that oil. (ANI)
