Silkyara tunnel Uttarakhand

Rat Miner Team Celebrate Successful Rescue Of 41 Workers

When heavy machinery broke down in an effort to drill through the debris that had trapped 41 workers in the Silkyara tunnel, the rescuers resorted to rat-hole mining, a banned practice in the country.

Rat hole mining involves digging of very small tunnels, through which skilled workers enter and extract coal or debris.

Rat mining rescue team leader Vakeel Hasan while recounting his memories of the moment when the team of the miners saw the workers, said that it was like offering water to the person who is about to die with thirst.

“It was a very emotional feeling when we saw them and they saw us. It was like a person getting some water on a deserted land. It was like everyone accomplished their purposes. We fulfilled the commitment that we made… All the workers came out of the tunnel without a scratch…” Hasan said.

Rat-hole miners emerged as the heroes as they drilled with their hands to safely evacuate all workers on Tuesday.

Speaking about the process and technique of going into tight spaces to reach the trapped workers on Tuesday, Hasan said that the miners had installed a pipe to 18 meters.

“We installed a pipe till 18 meters… Munna and I are partners, and the other 10 are workers… actually, we had to dig for 15 meters but when we couldn’t reach the workers, we dug more three meters….In the pipe, we started the ‘chuha boring’ technique- this is the same way, a rat digs the soil. The way it pushes the soils behind it and then proceeds, this is the same technique,” Hasan added.

Munna, the partner of Vakeel Hasan said that the trapped workers were hugely relieved and showered them with love when they saw them for the first time.

“When four of my workers went inside the tunnel where the workers were trapped, the labourers asked them to call me and when I reached there, they asked me what I wanted. As soon as they saw me, they showered all their love to me and asked whether I wanted their lives, money, or the position of God. I said that I only need your love,” Munna said.

This rat-mining method has faced severe criticism due to its hazardous working conditions and numerous accidents leading to injuries and fatalities.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned the practice in 2014 and retained the ban in 2015.

The 41 workers had been trapped since November 12 when the part of the tunnel they were helping to construct in Uttarakhand gave way, blocking their only exit with more than 60 meters of broken rock, concrete, and twisted metal.

Of the 41 men, eight are from Uttar Pradesh, 15 are from Jharkhand, two are from Uttarakhand, five are from Bihar, three are from West Bengal, five are from Odisha, two are from Assam, and one is from Himachal Pradesh.

The first workers were brought out following a series of agonizing setbacks, during which rescue efforts were halted when the heavy drill meant to break through the debris broke down, forcing workers to adopt riskier methods. (ANI)

Rahul Gets Extension As Head Coach Of Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the extension of contracts for head coach Rahul Dravid and the support staff of Team India (Senior Men).

“The BCCI engaged in productive discussions with Rahul Dravid after the term of his contract ended following the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and unanimously agreed to further the tenure,” BCCI said in an official statement.

“The Board acknowledges Dravid’s instrumental role in moulding the Indian Team and commends his exceptional professionalism. The Board also appreciates VVS Laxman for his exemplary roles as Head of NCA and as the stand-in head coach. Similar to their legendary on-field partnerships, Dravid and Laxman have worked closely in driving Indian Cricket forward” the statement added.

Batting coach Vikram Rathour, fielding coach T Dilip and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey will continue their stint with team India as BCCI also extended contracts of support staff of Team India.

Dravid’s second stint with the Team India will be the tour of South Africa from December 10, which will have three ODIs and T20Is each and two Tests. The red-ball leg will start from December 26.

Following that will be a five-match Test series against England at home, before the ICC T20 World Cup in June in West Indies/USA.

Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri following a disappointing ICC T20 World Cup campaign in 2021, which saw India exit in the Super 12 stage. He was appointed for a two-year term, which ended with India’s runners-up finish in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup at home.

On the contract extention, Dravid said, “The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable. Together, we have witnessed the highs and lows, and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal. I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. It’s a culture that stands resilient, whether in moments of triumph or adversity. The skills and talent that our team possesses are phenomenal, and what we’ve stressed is following the right process and sticking to our preparations, which has had a direct impact on the overall result.”

“I thank the BCCI and the Office Bearers for placing their trust in me, endorsing my vision, and providing support during this period. The demands of this role necessitate considerable time away from home, and I deeply appreciate my family’s sacrifices and support. Their instrumental role behind the scenes has been invaluable. As we embrace new challenges post the World Cup, we remain committed to the pursuit of excellence,” he added. (ANI)

new Holiday calendar Muslim Holiday Nitish

BJP Accuses Nitish Of Appeasement Over New Holiday Calendar

An all-out war of words has broken out between the BJP and the ruling BJP-RJD in Bihar after the state government issued a new Holiday calendar for school. The BJP has accused the Bihar government of appeasment claiming that Muslim holidays have been increase while those on Hindu religious festivals have decreased.

“People say that in Bihar and UP, as the age increases, people become religious. Nitish Kumar is becoming religious but by turning religious towards other religions, He is forgetting the Hindu religion. Do one thing, get a resolution passed in the assembly that Bihar is going to be made an Islamic state and the first religion will be Islam and send it to the Centre,” Ajay Alok BJP spokesperson said.

“You will cancel the holiday of Makar Sankranti, the whole of Bihar takes a bath in the Ganga here and offers worship to the Sun God. Will you cancel the Rakshabandhan holiday? People all over the country celebrate Rakshabandhan. You will cancel the Mahashivratri holiday, you will cancel the Janmashtami holiday, the limits have been crossed. Last time Nitish Kumar did the same thing by decreasing holidays on Hindu Festivals. Will you do appeasement politics for Islamic sycophancy?” added Ajay Alok.

The JDU however says the BJP has politicises a non-issue.

“The holidays of Shab-e-Barat have been reduced and there is no discussion over it…Maha Shivratri, Krishna Janmashtami, Basant Panchami, Holi and Dussehra holidays have been retained…The education department can only give an explanation as to why certain holidays were increased…Instead of looking at it through a political lens, BJP should give an opinion after the clarification from the education department” Neeraj Kumar JDU Spokesperson said.

Earlier several leaders of the BJP attacked Nitish Kumar on the issue. BJP MP Sushil Modi said that the decision showed that Nitish was Anti-Hindu.

“The Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has shown an anti-Hindu face and taken a decision to hurt the sentiments of the Hindus…The holidays for Hindu festivals have been selectively slashed, while holidays for Muslim festivals have been increased” BJP MP Sushil Modi said.

Minister of Panchayati Raj Giriraj Singh claimed that Nitish Kumar has issued a “Tughlak farman” for the third time.

“The way Lalu Yadav and the Nitish government are attacking Hindus, in the future they will be known as Mohammad Nitish and Mohammad Lalu,” he said in a video message posted on his social media platform X.

The Bihar education department on Monday issued the holiday calendar for 2024 and said the chart has been created to ensure at least 220 teaching days under the Right to Education. The holiday calendar for the year 2024 has seen wholesale change, with the number of summer vacation days increased from 20 to 30. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi

Bye Bye KCR: Rahul Ahead Of Telangana Polls

As campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections ended on Tuesday in Telangana, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to the people in the poll-bound state to get rid of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for their own good and asked the public to follow the party’s slogan ‘Bye Bye KCR’.

Rahul Gandhi alongside General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Telangana Congress President Revanth Reddy held a roadshow from Anand Bagh Chowrasta to Malkajgiri Chowrasta on Tuesday.

Addressing the public at a roadshow event, Rahul Gandhi said,” If your Chief Minister is fighting against PM Modi then why not a single case has been filed against him. Why no IT, CBI, or ED cases are filed against him? I have seen with my own eyes, that BRS helps the Centre in Lok Sabha be it demonetisation or farm bills. On the other hand, AIMIM tries to cut in our vote share. Be it Assam, or Rajasthan. AIMIM, BJP, and BRS are one unit.”

“We have to do Bye Bye KCR in these elections. BRS needs to be removed from Telangana and PM Modi from Centre,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi further stated that he only fights against Prime Minister Modi stating that the PM tries to spread hatred in the nation.

“They (BJP) took away my official residence. I said I don’t want it. My home is in the hearts of people. I have 24 cases against me on directions of PM Modi,” the Congress leader said.

“My relation with you is not political, but it is a family relation. We walked from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. We do not want an India of hate or violence. My fight is against PM Modi because he tries to spread hate in the nation. We want an India of love. A nation is formed with love,” he added.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi also appealed to the voters and said that her party would form an honest government in Telangana if voted to power.

“There has been a KCR and BRS government for ten years. Were you given employment? What was given to women? KCR family members were made ministers. Only one government in the country is running from a farmhouse and this is that government. If you form a Congress government, we will fulfil our six guarantees, and we will form an honest government for you,” she said.

The polls for the Telangana polls ended on Tuesday.

Telangana is set to witness a triangular contest between the ruling Bharat Rasthtra Samithi, Congress and BJP as the state goes to the polls on November 30.

In the last Assembly elections in 2018, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), previously known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), won 88 of the 119 seats, hogging 47.4 per cent of the total vote share. The Congress came in a distant second with just 19 seats, while the BJP drew a blank. (ANI)
