Extension Of Scientist Behind ‘Project Cheetah’ Withdrawn

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Tuesday withdrew the extension granted to noted biologist and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) dean YV Jhala on his superannuation on February 28, 2022, till February 28, 2024.

In an order issused on February 28, 2022, the Union ministry said, “Dr. Y.V. Jhala, Scientist-G, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun was granted an extension of two years from the date of his superannuation, i.e.,28.02.2022. In this context, the undersigned is directed to mention that the said extension period is curtailed and restricted to one year i.e., up to 28.02.2023.”
“The vacancy arising, as a result, shall be filled up with the ongoing process of recruitment of Scientists. This issues with the approval of the competent authority,” the order stated further.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Jhala had said, “The (Cheetah) project itself was mine, but the government is the parent. The government can do whatever it wants. What can we do about it? Last evening, I was told that my tenure is over. No reason was given to me by the government.”

However, contesting Jhala’s claim, an official in the Union ministry told ANI, on the condition of anonymity, “‘Project Cheetah’ is a project of the Union government in association with the Madhya Pradesh government and the WII. It’s not an individual-driven project.”

Jhala was one of the scientists involved in preparing the technical ground for the ambitious ‘Cheetah project’, under successive Union governments since 2009. He was a member of the Ceetah Task Force’ set up in 2010 under conservationist M K Ranjitsinh.

To a question from ANI on the withdrawal of the extension granted to Jhala, the official said, “Dr. Y V Jhala had already retired from the Wildlife institute of India, Dehradun, and was serving on extension. So, it would be wrong to say that his tenure has been curtailed.”

On allegations of Jhala being sidelined from the ‘Cheetah Project’, the official said the claim is unfounded as he had participated in every meeting of the task force. (ANI)

Raid On Atiq’s Residence In Lucknow, Seizes Two Luxury Cars

Raid On Atiq’s Residence In Lucknow, Seizes Two Luxury Cars

Prayagraj Police conducted a raid on gangster-turned-politician and former Samajwadi Party leader Atiq Ahmed’s residence in the Mahanagar area of Lucknow, seizing two luxury cars from the Universal Apartments, police sources said on Wednesday.

The raids were conducted on February 27 late night, sources said, adding that the action followed a shootout in which the prime witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, advocate Umesh Pal, was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24.
Atiq Ahmed, along with his son Asad Ahmed and wife and BSP leader Shaista Parveen were named in the FIR in connection with the murder.

The police conducted the raid after receiving an input that some shooters had taken shelter in that apartment. However, they had left the place before the raid, police sources said on Wednesday.

The police, however, impounded two luxury cars and took them to the Mahanagar police station.

“STF and Prayagraj Police raided Universal Apartment flat number 202 and impounded two luxury vehicles, which were brought to Mahanagar police station. The vehicles are registered in the names of Atiq Ahmed’s family members,” a source said.

A guard at the building said the CCTV has been out of order for nearly two years.

“They left the flat on February 24 evening. There were 3 to 4 people. They (shooters) were not seen thereafter. The police took away the cars day before yesterday. Personnel from the STF and Mahanagar police station were here. Nobody was found in the flat,” a guard at the building said.

Earlier, in a major development in the Umesh Pal murder case, an accused was shot in an exchange of fire near the Nehru Park area in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj on Monday, a top police officer said.

The accused, identified as Arbaaz, was driving the car used in the murder of Umesh Pal, who was a prime witness in several cases, including the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

The police said Arbaaz was injured and succumbed at the hospital.

“Accused Arbaaz was shot during the encounter that took place near Nehru Park in Dhoomanganj, Prayagraj earlier today. He was driving the car that was used in the murder (of Umesh Pal) and was fired upon,” ADG law and order Prashant Kumar said on Monday.

“Arbaaz died during treatment at the hospital. The UP administration and the police have initiated a campaign against all such miscreants, gangsters, and mafia. There is also a crackdown on those sheltering such people,” he added.

Umesh Pal and one of his two armed security escorts were shot dead in Prayagraj’s Sulem Saray area on February 24. Several rounds were fired and bombs hurled at Umesh and his gunners.

The incident came days after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath lashed out at the Samajwadi Party in the Assembly on February 25, saying that his government would destroy the mafia.

Describing the Prayagraj incident as sad, CM Yogi said “The government has taken cognisance of it and the results of our policy of zero tolerance for crime would be there for everyone to see very soon. No one should have any doubts about it.”

“Is it not true that the accused against whom the FIR has been lodged, was made an MP by Samajwadi Party? You raise and nurture all the criminals, garland them and then blame others when a crime takes place. By doing this, you are just making a spectacle of yourself,” the CM added, in an attack on SP members.

Meanwhile, SP MLA Pooja Pal (wife of Lt. BSP MLA Raju Pal) met CM Adityanath on Tuesday, demanding for Y+ security for herself and family. (ANI)

AAP Legislators Bhardwaj, Atishi Likely To Be Elevated As Ministers

AAP Legislators Bhardwaj, Atishi Likely To Be Elevated As Ministers

In a major rejig in the Delhi cabinet necessitated by the resignations of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sent the names of Aam Aadmi Party MLAs Saurabh Bhardwaj and Atishi to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to be elevated as ministers, sources said on Wednesday.

The development comes after Sisodia, who headed 18 departments, and Jain, who has been in jail for months in a money laundering case, stepped down as ministers.
Sources on Tuesday had said the departments held by Sisodia will be redistributed to senior AAP leaders Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand.

“Sisodia held 18 departments, some of which will now be handled by Kailash Gahlot and the rest by Raaj Kumar Anand,” a source said on Tuesday.

Sisodia was earlier arrested by the CBI in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

Sisodia was arrested on Sunday in an ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the new excise policy of the Delhi government.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain Sisodia’s plea challenging his arrest in the excise policy case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said the top court is not inclined to entertain the petition at this stage, suggesting that Sisodia move Delhi High Court.

“We cannot interfere in the matter as it may open the gate of people approaching the top court in every such matter,” the bench observed.

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Monday sent him to CBI custody for 5 days.

The CBI had also quizzed AAP leader Jain in Tihar Jail in connection with alleged corruption in the implementation of the now-junked Delhi Excise policy.

Jain is currently lodged in judicial custody in connection with a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Recently, the CBI and ED made several arrests for alleged corruption in the implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy. (ANI)

FBI Chief Confirms Covid-19 Originated From Lab Incident In Wuhan

FBI Chief Confirms Covid-19 Originated From Lab Incident In Wuhan

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday (local time) confirmed that the Covid-19 pandemic originated from a lab incident in Wuhan, China.

“FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed that the Bureau has assessed that the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic likely originated from a lab incident in Wuhan, China,” tweeted the FBI.
This development comes after new intelligence had prompted the Energy Department to conclude that an accidental laboratory leak in China most likely caused the novel coronavirus pandemic, reported The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

“The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan… I will just make the observation that the Chinese government… has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate the work here, the work that we’re doing, the work that our US government and close foreign partners are doing,” said FBI chief.

The update, which is less than five pages, wasn’t requested by the Congress. But lawmakers, particularly House and Senate Republicans, have been pursuing their own investigations into the origins of the pandemic and are pressing the Biden administration and the intelligence community for more information.

The Energy Department now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory, reported WSJ.

The Energy Department’s conclusion is the result of new intelligence and is significant because the agency has considerable scientific expertise and oversees a network of US national laboratories, some of which conduct advanced biological research.

The Energy Department’s insights come from its network of national laboratories, some of which conduct biological research, rather than more traditional forms of intelligence like spy networks or communications intercepts.

The novel coronavirus first circulated in Wuhan, China, no later than November 2019, according to the US 2021 intelligence report. The pandemic’s origin has been the subject of vigorous debate among academics, intelligence experts and lawmakers.

The emergence of the pandemic heightened tensions between the US and China, which US officials alleged was withholding information about the outbreak. It also led to a spirited and at times partisan debate in the US about its origin.

China, which has placed limits on investigations by the World Health Organisation (WHO), has disputed that the virus could have leaked from one of its labs and has suggested it emerged outside China.

The Chinese government didn’t respond to requests for comment about whether there has been any change in its views on the origins of Covid-19.

However, the fact that Wuhan is the center of China’s extensive coronavirus research, has led some scientists and US officials to argue that a lab leak is the best explanation for the pandemic’s origin.

Wuhan is home to an array of laboratories, many of which were built or expanded as a result of China’s traumatic experience with the initial severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, epidemic beginning in 2002.

They include campuses of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, which produces vaccines. (ANI)

‘Police Threatened To Dispose Bust’: Brother Of Galwan Martyr

‘Police Threatened To Dispose Bust’: Brother Of Galwan Martyr

The brother of Galwan Valley martyr Jai Kishore has alleged that the Bihar Police ordered them to remove a memorial that they built for the fallen jawan, in Vaishali, failing which they will “dispose it in the waters”.

The claim comes a day after the kin of the jawan, who was among the 20 Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the clash with Chinese PLA troops in the Galwan Valley in 2020, alleged that his father was thrashed and arrested by the police for building a memorial for his son on government land at Jandaha in Bihar’s Vaishali.
The police claimed that the memorial was built on land owned by someone else, amounting to encroachment.

“I don’t have any idea why they arrested my father or why an FIR was filed against him. All the information that has come out in the public domain in the matter is fabricated. This memorial was built following due process. The DSP ordered us to remove the memorial, threatening to dispose it in the waters if we do not comply,” Nand Kishore, brother of the slain jawan Jai Kishore, told ANI on Tuesday.

Manju Devi, the mother of the fallen soldier, told ANI that the police manhandled her husband and gave no information on the legal action taken against him. She added the police “threatened” the family with consequences if they do not remove the memorial.

“The police came and took away my husband. They manhandled him and didn’t even inform us of his arrest or the legal action being taken against him. They repeatedly threatened us with consequences if we do not remove the memorial,” the jawan’s mother told ANI.

The police had earlier claimed that no permission was sought to build the memorial on the land, which they claimed belonged to someone else.

“On January 23, a case was registered under SC/ST Act over a bust installed on the land belonging to Hari Nath Ram and on government land in Jandaha. Later, boundary walls were erected around the memorial. They (family of the fallen jawan) did not seek official permission. If they wanted, they could have made it their own land or seek land from the government. There would not have been any issue then. The landowner’s rights were violated due to encroachment,” the SDPO Mahua said on Tuesday.

However, the jawan’s brother, Nand Kishore, who is also in the armed forces, accused the police of thrashing his father and abusing him.

“DSP ma’am visited us, asking us to remove the statue within 15 days. I said I will show her the paperwork (for raising the memorial). Later, the police station in-charge came to our home and beat up my father before arresting him. They also abused my father. I am also in the armed forces personnel,” Nand Kishore said.

The locals protested against the police action and also chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. (ANI)

Bola Tinubu Wins Nigeria’s Presidential Election

Bola Tinubu Wins Nigeria’s Presidential Election

Ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu WAS declared the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election on Wednesday, against Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, reported The Washington Post.

Tinubu won for the ruling party despite the unpopularity of its outgoing president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, the opposition, including the campaigns of both outsider candidate Peter Obi and former vice president Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to challenge the results, saying that a new election should be held under a new elections chief, reported The Washington Post.

Tinubu, 70, known as a kingmaker in Nigerian politics, received 36 per cent of more than 24 million votes cast, according to results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He also received over 25 per cent of the vote in more than two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states and Abuja, thus meeting both requirements to win Nigeria’s presidency.

Tinubu, who had the support of Buhari and a massive get-out-the-vote effort behind him, ran on the slogan “It’s my turn”.

He benefited because the Opposition was divided between Obi, 61, a former governor popular among the youth, and Abubakar, 76, on his sixth bid for the presidency, reported The Washington Post.

Now, Obi’s and Abubakar’s campaigns have joined forces to call for a fresh election, saying that INEC’s poor performance overseeing the election led to a loss of confidence in the results.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, key Opposition figures alleged widespread technological problems, delays in poll openings on Election Day, violence and voter intimidation, and manipulation of results, reported The Washington Post.

Pockets of protest, including in the capital, Abuja, emerged Tuesday, and political analysts warned it could spread. Leaders in the opposition and ruling parties urged calm.

While analysts said it is not clear whether delays and vote discrepancies could have altered the election outcome, they said that such problems undermined the confidence of voters in Africa’s largest democracy. Many were already deeply frustrated with their government after years of spiraling economic and security crises.

President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after two terms in office, marked by economic stagnation and growing insecurity around the country — from an Islamist insurgency in the north-east to a nationwide crisis of kidnapping for ransom and separatist attacks in the south-east.

Tinubu now has the task of solving these problems, among others, in Africa’s most populous nation and the biggest oil exporter to the continent. (ANI)

Sangh Parivar’s Callous Disregard For Humanity: Vijayan Remembers Jafri

Sangh Parivar’s Callous Disregard For Humanity: Vijayan Remembers Jafri

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday remembered Congress former MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the 2002 Gujarat riots, demanding “accountability” of the riot.

“Former MP Ehsan Jafri’s memory ignites our outrage over the 2002 Gujarat riots, a chilling reminder of the Sangh Parivar’s callous disregard for humanity,” CM wrote in his tweet.
https://twitter.com/pinarayivijayan/status/1630468501424197632?s=20

He further said, “Let’s stand with Zakia Jafri in her fight for justice and demand accountability for these unspeakable crimes.”

Jafri was a member of the 6th Lok Sabha. He was killed by a mob in the Gulbarg Society massacre on February 28, 2002, following the Godhra incident the previous day.

While on Facebook, Kerala CM said that Ehsan Jaffrey’s memory is a call to secular India to unite with Sakia’s fight against the “aggressive communism” of the Sangh Parivar.

“On February 28, 2002, when Sangh Parivar rioters attacked Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad, residents of the colony sought shelter at Ehsan Jaffrey’s house. Even though Jaffrey contacted the authorities over the phone to save those who rushed to his house for their lives, but the authorities refused to act. Then 69 people including Jaffrey were burnt to death in the Gulberg Society in a fire set by the Sangh Parivar,” he added.

He went on to say that the Gulberg Society witnessed the epitome of “minority hunting” that took place in Gujarat during the genocide.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President K Sudhakaran also took to Twitter to say, “Remembering Ahsan Jafri, Congress MP, who was brutally murdered on this day in 2002 Gujarat riots.” (ANI)
