Arvind Kejriwal

Kejriwal Agrees To Appear Before ED Virtually

In response to the eighth summons of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) which asked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appear before ED on March 4, the Aam Aadmi Party leader has written a reply to the Directorate of Enforcement stating the ED’s summon as “illegal”, however he has agreed to appear before the agency virtually on any date after March 12.

Earlier on February 27, The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) issued an eighth summons to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering probe related to irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 case, asking him to join the investigation on March 4.

The fresh summons to the Delhi Chief Minister followed the seventh summons which he had skipped on February 26.

Kejriwal has so far skipped seven previous summons issued by the ED on February 26, February 19, February 2, January 18, January 3, November 2 and December 22, calling them “illegal and politically motivated”.

The ED wants to record Kejriwal’s statement in the case on issues like the formulation of policy, meetings held before it was finalised, and allegations of bribery.

While skipping the seventh summons issued by the ED, AAP, in a statement, termed it “illegal”, saying that the ED should stop sending summonses and wait for the court’s decision as the probe agency has already approached the court on the matter.

A day after Kejriwal skipped the fifth summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate, the agency on February 3 approached a Delhi court against him for “non-compliance with the summons”.

The case is based on a First Information Report (FIR) alleging multiple irregularities in the formation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy (2021-22) by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The policy was withdrawn after allegations of corruption.

In its sixth charge sheet filed in the case on December 2, 2023, naming AAP leader Sanjay Singh and his aide Sarvesh Mishra, the ED has claimed that the AAP used kickbacks worth Rs 45 crore generated via the policy for part of its assembly elections campaign in Goa in 2022.

The excise policy was aimed to revitalise the city’s flagging liquor business and replace a sales-volume-based regime with a license fee for traders. It promised swankier stores and a better buying experience. The policy introduced discounts and offers on the purchase of liquor for the first time in Delhi.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena’s move to order a probe into alleged irregularities in the regime prompted the scrapping of the policy. The AAP has accused Saxena’s predecessor, Anil Baijal, of sabotaging the move with a few last-minute changes that resulted in lower-than-expected revenues.

Two senior AAP leaders — Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh — are already under judicial custody in the case. Sisodia, who was the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the CBI on February 26 following several rounds of questioning and on October 5, the ED arrested Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha member. Maliwal Begins Her Rajya Sabha Stint With Hanuman Temple Visit

Ahead of the start of the interim budget session, Aam Aadmi Party leader Swati Maliwal offered prayers in Hanuman Temple at Connaught Place, Delhi on Wednesday.

“Today, before taking oath in the Rajya Sabha, CP took blessings by bowing his head at the feet of Bajrang Bali at the ancient Hanuman temple. Jai Shri Ram, Jai Bajrang Bali,” Swati Maliwal posted on X.

The former Delhi Commission for Women chief will take the oath as a Rajya Sabha Member of AAP today.

“This budget should be such that it benefits the women, the farmers, the poor, the youth and also the middle class,” said Aam Aadmi Party leader Swati Maliwal.

Earlier on January 12, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members Sanjay Singh, Swati Maliwal and ND Gupta were elected unopposed as Rajya Sabha members.

After being elected Rajya Sabha MP, Swati Maliwal said that she would fulfil her duties with true devotion and honesty.

“A new responsibility is starting today. Thousands of women came today to encourage them. I assure all the people of Delhi that I will serve you with true devotion and honesty. Gratitude to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,” Swati Maliwal said.

The AAP leader has also called for the government to take special interest in issues relating to crimes against women.

“Women across the country are breaking all barriers and obstacles to move forward… Women’s safety is a burning issue in the country. Every hour, crimes against women and children are only increasing. It is my request to the central government to pay special attention to this issue and come up with a hard-hitting solution to this problem… If a person sitting at the helm of the government indulges in such crimes, they should be tried even more strictly. Additionally, I demand laws to protect domestic helpers from such crimes…” the AAP leader had said on the occasion of Republic Day.

The three candidates had filed their nominations on January 8 in the national capital.

AAP has renominated Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term, while Swati Maliwal, who was the former Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), has been sent to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. Swati Maliwal is replacing Sushil Gupta. (ANI)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha

I Challenge: Raghav Hits Back At BJP Over Forged Signatures Allegation

Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha on Thursday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over “forged signatures” allegations by five Rajya Sabha MPs and challenged the BJP to show him the piece of paper where they are claiming the forged signatures.

Chadha’s statement came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha alleged fraud after five MPs of the Upper House — S Phangnon Konyak, Narhari Amin and Sudhanshu Trivedi of BJP, M Thambidurai of AIADMK and Sasmit Patra of BJD — said that their name was included without their consent in a motion moved by Chadha in the House.

While addressing a press conference in the national capital, Chadha said, “I challenge the BJP leaders to bring the paper on which forged signatures were done.”

Citing the rule book AAP leader said that MP can propose the name for the formation of any committee and neither the signature nor the written consent of the person whose name is proposed is required.

“But a lie was spread that forged signatures were done,” he added.

He further requested the media to show the truth and said that will file a case against small section of the media who were running propaganda against him.

“I request the media to show the truth. A small section of the media was running propaganda against me and I will have to file a complaint against them. I will also have to file a complaint in Court and Privileges Committee against those MPs who claimed that the signatures were forged,” he added.

Meanwhile, AAP leader Sanjay Singh was also present during the conference and said that BJP government wants to end Chadha’s Rajya Sabha membership just like they did with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“A new tradition has started that whoever speaks against Modi ji, take action against him. Home Minister Amit Shah should know that no signature is required to propose the name. The party is trying to end the membership of Raghav Chadha like Rahul Gandhi,” Sanjay Singh said at a press conference.

“The BJP’s mantra is to tell a lie 1,000 times to make it sound like the truth. The BJP floated this false narrative that signatures were forged,” he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah speaking in Rajya Sabha on Delhi Services Bill yesterday said, “Two members (BJD MP Sasmit Patra and BJP MP Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi) are saying that they have not signed the motion (to be part of select committee) moved by AAP MP Raghav Chadha. Now it is a matter of investigation how the motion was signed.” (ANI)
