Delhi Chalo Protest: Farmers Clash With Police at Shambhu Border

Haryana police detained several protesting farmers as they marched towards Delhi on Tuesday.

The protesting farmers were seen attempting to break the multi-layered barricades using their tractors and hand weapons.

Scenes of chaos filled the Shambhu border as the police tried to stop the protestors from entering the national capital.

Visuals from the border showed farmers running towards nearby farmland on the sides of the road as police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protestors.

Concrete slabs, iron nails, barricades, barbed wires, police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed by the police at several parts of the border.

Speaking on the protest, Sibash Kabiraj, IG, Ambala Range said, “We welcome the farmers coming from Punjab but if they travel on tractors it will create problems for the people.”

“They can travel on buses, trains or foot. If they come on tractors, we will not allow them. Section 144 has also been imposed,” he added.14:37 13-02-2024

Union Minister Arjun Munda, in response to the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, emphasized the necessity of time and deliberation to address the concerns raised by the farming community.

“We care about the interests of the farmers. It is not our concern if someone is doing politics over this issue. We have always been ready for talks and discussions and we are ready to do everything possible to find a solution to this issue.”

Arjun Munda is among the team of ministers holding talks with the farmer leaders that also includes Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal, MoS Nityanand Rai and Punjab Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal.

The farmers have put forth 12 demands before the central government for which they’re marching to Delhi.

The protest this time has been called by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee led by farmer union leaders Jagjeet Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher.

According to the protesting farmers, the centre promised them better crop prices after which they ended the 2021 protest.

They are demanding to enact a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for all crops, as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission report.

They are also demanding a complete debt waiver and a scheme to provide pensions to farmers and farm labourers.

The farmers have also urged to scrap the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 and are demanding to reintroduce the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, ensuring consent from farmers and compensation at 4 times the collector rate.

Further, they are demanding to punish those involved in the Lakhimpur Kheri killings.

An appeal to provide 200 days of employment per year and a daily wage of Rs 700 under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) linking it with farming has also been made by the farmers.

Also, a demand to provide compensation to the families of farmers who died during the protests in 2021 and a job for any family member has been put in place. (ANI)

Sandeep Case: Haryana Woman Coach Claims Offered Rs 1Cr To Leave Country

The woman coach, who alleged sexual harassment by Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh, on Tuesday claimed that she is receiving phone calls asking her to leave the country for which she has been offered Rs 1 crore.

She claimed that Haryana Police is putting pressure on her.
Her remarks came while speaking to the media after she appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chandigarh Police.

“I have told everything in detail to the Chandigarh Police SIT. I also told the pending issues to the SIT. I heard the Chief Minister’s statement this morning, in which the Chief Minister himself is taking the side of Sandeep Singh. Chandigarh Police did not put any pressure on me. Haryana Police is trying to put pressure on me,” she claimed.

“I’m receiving phone calls that I can leave and go to any country I want and I would get Rs 1 crore for a month,” she added.

The coach’s advocate Dipanshu Bansal alleged that the Chandigarh Police has not arrested the former minister, nor have the police interrogated him.

“This whole matter was of Chandigarh. Chandigarh Police had given notice under Section 160 after which we reached the police station to record the statement. There was interrogation for 8 hours. Whatever records were with my client were presented before the police. We have submitted the phone to the police. The police have neither interrogated Sandeep Singh nor arrested him. We have talked to the SIT in charge regarding the interrogation of Sandeep Singh. We have given the police two three days’ time to arrest the minister,” he said.

“Non-bailable sections have been imposed on Sandeep Singh, still why are the police not arresting him? The victim’s phone has also been seized by the police,” the advocate said.

Representatives from Dhankhar Khap along with the father of the woman coach, who accused sports minister Sandeep Singh of sexual harassment, met Haryana Home minister Anil Vij in Ambala today.

Earlier, the woman, who is a junior athlete coach, held a press conference at the office of the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), wherein she alleged that the minister harassed her from February to November last year, by repeated messages in social media and had touched her inappropriately and also threatened her in messages.

During the press briefing, the woman demanded that the Manohar Lal Khattar government in Haryana immediately sack Sandeep Singh and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.

Notably, on Sunday, the woman told ANI that she opened up about the incident to the public after her she lost patience.

“I am also a player, think how much patience I would have to tolerate such ill behaviour of this person from February till now,” the woman said, adding that she didn’t open up about the incident earlier as she was afraid of negative impact on the sports industry.

“I tried as much as I could. He created such an atmosphere officially that a girl comes to him automatically,” she added.

The woman reiterated that she opened up to the public only after her patience broke.

Hours after sexual harassment allegations were leveled against him, Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh on Sunday said that he has handed over the responsibility of the Sports department to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar until the report of the investigation is out. (ANI)

Multiple raids were conducted as a part of the drive. A total of 710 FIRs were registered under relevant sections of IPC, NDPS, Arms and Excise Act.

Sh. P.K. Agrawal, the Director General of Police (DGP) told ANI that drive was aimed at a crackdown on the criminal elements.

“The drive was aimed at taking effective action against the criminal elements, put a check on street crime, illegal weapons and unearth illegal arms, liquor and narcotic substances. The senior police officers personally took part in these raids and closely monitored the entire crackdown on criminal elements,” Agrawal said.

“We wish to create fear of law into the hearts of criminals and anti-social elements in each district by raiding their streets/houses without leaving a scope for them to escape,” he added.

As per the reports from the field units, 645 teams comprising around 3500 police personnel raided a number of locations. The police also managed to nab 45 proclaimed offenders and 34 bail jumpers, many of whom were evading their arrest for a long time.

The DGP also said about the raid conducted inside the jail premises and how it is of great deterrent value against the criminals.

“Police had also conducted raids in jail premises across the state to check unlawful activities, devices and other substances. Assessing the special drive, I found it to be of great deterrent value for criminals and a step towards instilling confidence in the rule of law amongst the general public. The operation will be conducted in future as well,” he added.

It is worthwhile to mention that ‘Operation Akraman’ is a special state-level drive of carrying out simultaneous raids on multiple targets. Under this, raiding parties have been formed that jointly crack down on the target without leaving scope for the criminal elements to escape. (ANI)
