BrahMos Cruise Missile

Successful Firing Of Longer Range Air-Launched BrahMos Cruise Missile

In a major success for the indigenous weapon systems, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has carried out a successful restoration of the air-launched version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in the Bay of Bengal.

The BrahMos air-launched version missile was testfired from a Su-30MKI fighter jet which has the capability to launch the BrahMos cruise missiles that can hit enemy targets at long ranges.

“The BrahMos air-launched missile was fired from a Su-30MKI fighter jet in the last few days. The aircraft had taken off with the missile from an air base in the southern peninsula and travelled over 1,500 Km to successfully strike a target from a longer range than before,” defence officials told ANI.

The missile was the longer-range version of the supersonic weapon system which has been one of the unique weapons possessed by India in partnership with the Russian industry.

India has been working towards developing a very long-range version of the air-launched BrahMos cruise missiles which would be able to hit

The Indian Air Force had recently carried out two trials of the land attack missile system and the results were very good as missiles hit bull’s eye in the user trials, the sources said.

India is also exporting the missiles to friendly foreign countries including the Philippines which would be using them in the coastal battery role.

The BrahMos Aerospace corporation is also looking at exporting the missiles to more countries and helping achieve the export targets set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (ANI)

India Sugar Export

India Extends Sugar Export Restrictions Until Further Orders

India has extended the restrictions on the export of sugar beyond October 31, 2023, and until further orders, according to a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued on Wednesday.

The raw sugar, white sugar, refined sugar, and organic sugar are under export restrictions.

The restriction is, however, not applicable to sugar being exported to the EU and the US under the concession (CXL) and TRQ quota as was announced last year.

Initially, the restrictions were imposed starting June 1 to October 31, 2022, and later extended by a year till October 31, 2023. A tariff rate quota essentially is a quota for exports at relatively low duties. Once the limit is exhausted, a higher tariff applies to additional shipments.

The idea behind the sugar export restriction initially was to make prices of sugar stable domestically.

Earlier, in July, India prohibited the export of non-basmati white rice to check the domestic prices and ensure domestic food security.

While amending the export policy, DGFT maintained that the export will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their government.

By that virtue, India has allowed the export of non-basmati white rice in varying quantities to Nepal, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, Seychelles, UAE, and Singapore.

West African country Benin is one of the major importers of non-basmati rice from India. Other destination countries are UAE, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Cote D’ Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Vietnam, Djibouti, Madagascar, Cameroon Somalia, Malaysia, and Liberia.

In late August, India also introduced additional safeguards by way of imposing a minimum floor price on exports of basmati rice so as to prevent exports of non-basmati white rice, which was already under the prohibited category since July.

Last week, the central government extended the 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice till March 31, 2024, an official notification said. Rice which is partially boiled with husk is called parboiled rice.

Initially, the duty was introduced on August 25, 2023, and was due to remain effective till October 16, 2023, aimed at maintaining adequate domestic availability and checking its price.

India in September 2022 banned the exports of broken rice and imposed a 20 per cent duty on exports of non-Basmati rice, except for parboiled rice amid concerns about low production due to a fall in area under the paddy crop. It later lifted the ban in November. (ANI)

Ability To Fuse Tradition, Tech Sets India Apart On Global Stage: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, on Tuesday engaged with the Indian community in Vietnam and emphasised the importance of blending tradition and technology in shaping India’s future.

During his address, the External Affairs Minister underscored that it is India’s ability to seamlessly fuse its rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge technology that positions the country on the global stage.

The event, which took place in Hanoi, served as a platform for Jaishankar to reflect on the deepening ties between India and Vietnam and explore opportunities to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

He acknowledged the importance of people-to-people connections and commended the Indian diaspora for their role in strengthening India’s global outreach.

Jaishankar began his address by addressing the question of what lies in India’s future. He stated, “You know one part of it is tradition, and one part of it is technology. It takes a society like India to be able to fuse tradition and technology and be equally comfortable with both. That’s really what will actually give us our standing in the world.”

Jaishankar further emphasised the role of the Indian community in Vietnam in strengthening the bilateral relationship. He said, “There is no question today that in many ways our relationship is a good fit, there is a lot that we can do, but at the end of the day, when we speak about cooperation, it is done by people, and you are the people.”

The Indian diaspora plays a crucial role in fostering cultural exchange and economic cooperation between India and Vietnam. Their contributions in various fields, including business, education, and culture, have helped strengthen the ties between the two nations.

As India continues to expand its global presence, its unique ability to balance tradition and technology is becoming increasingly prominent. Jaishankar’s message to the Indian community in Vietnam resonates with India’s broader vision of fostering inclusive growth, preserving its heritage, and embracing the opportunities of the modern world.

Earlier today, Jaishankar attended the unveiling ceremony of the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Ho Chi Minh City and highlighted the significance of values and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi in modern scenarios.

“This is a very symbolic moment of our friendship…Mahatma Gandhi is without question one of the most iconic figures of our contemporary world and his contributions to truth, non-violence, independence and freedom of people have been recognised by the United Nations by proclaiming his birthday, 2nd October as International Day of non-violence,” he said.

Prior to that, the External Affairs Minister also met Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen and appreciated the contribution of HCMC to the India-Vietnam partnership.

The EAM is on an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of his counterpart Bui Thanh Son.

During his visit, the EAM unveiled the bust of Rabindranath Tagore in Bac Ninh province of Vietnam and watched a performance by the Quan Ho Art Theater group. (ANI)

Israeli Min Thank India

Israeli Min Thank India For Standing With Them

Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Chikli has thanked the Indian leadership, and the people of India for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel in its fight against Hamas.

“I want to thank the leadership of India, the people of India for being with us shoulder-to-shoulder in this fight against brutal jihadist barbaric Islamist. This is not just our war, this is your war too and we will win it together with your support,” he said.

He further said: “I want to tell the people of India – we share the same values, we cherish life, we cherish good…We believe in human values.”

He said that there are more than 120 confirmed hostages. “We will make every effort to bring them back home. It won’t be simple. As you know, Hamas has absolutely zero mercy, zero human values…So, we have no expectations from Hamas. Still, we believe we might, with intelligence, with efforts, maybe we can rescue some of them,” he said.

“My recommendation for Hamas militants – lay down your weapon, raise up your hands, come from your tunnel and maybe there will be mercy,” he added.

One of the towns that bore the brunt of the Hamas’ attack is Sderot in the South of Israel. Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi says Hamas must be destroyed.

“I have six children. All of them live in this situation. More than 50,000 people live in this situation. All of this time, I have asked the government to destroy Hamas” said the Sderot Mayor while speaking to ANI.

“We now see that the Hamas is the new ISIS of the world. Now, it’s not just Israel’s but everybody’s role to destroy the Hamas. It is like the Hezbollah, the ISIS,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator for the Captives and Missing Brigadier-General (Ret.) Gal Hirsch in his Second Meeting with Deputy US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Steven Gillen, said: “I thank you for standing alongside Israel and greatly appreciate the assistance.”

US State Secretary Antony Blinken has said the US stands with Israel as it defends itself. “The United States is also actively working to ensure the people of Gaza can get out of harm’s way and the assistance they need — food, water, medicine — can get in. Hamas does not care if Palestinians suffer,” he said.

Blinken arrived in Israel on Monday, the second time within a few days, to pledge support for the country as it prepares a major military offensive in Gaza, the Washington Post reported.

Blinken who was in Israel on Thursday returned to the country after a tour in which he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II of Jordan.

The visit comes amid reports in Israeli media that during a phone call on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Biden to Israel, the US daily reported.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) meanwhile continues to attack the Gaza Strip.

In the last few hours, dozens of operational headquarters and mortar bomb launching positions were destroyed. In addition, the military headquarters of Ali Kachi, one of the commanders in the Najaba force of the terrorist organization Hamas, who was eliminated a few days ago, was destroyed.

Earlier, Israel President Isaac Herzog revealed a disturbing Hamas booklet found on the body of a Palestinian terrorist killed in one of the Gaza-area communities on Sunday.

“This booklet is an operating manual, how to enter citizens’ yards, kibbutz, city, moshav, how to break in there. And first – and what do you do when you find the citizens? You torture them. This is the booklet that says exactly how to torture them, how to kidnap them,” Herzog told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

In a copy of the guide provided for the press, the manual — titled “The Warrior’s Guide: Jihadi Version” — outlines tactics, which include creating chaos, intimidating captives, and using tactics such as electric shocks and even live executions.

The eight-page guide instructs the kidnappers to utilize captives as human shields if attacked, regardless of their religion, race, or gender. The hostages should be “killed when necessary,” especially if there is any sign of revolt among them, it said, while instructed terrorists to document their actions live.

Many of the terrorists wore GoPro cameras and their footage was uploaded to social media. (ANI)

World Cup

India Outshine Pakistan In World Cup Cricket Match In Ahmedabad

India skipper Rohit Sharma’s flowing form dismantled Pakistan’s famed bowling attack as the Men in Blue put up a dominating performance with bat and ball in the marquee World Cup clash here to register a comprehensive seven-wicket victory.

The Indian batters looked well poised from the beginning to chase the Pakistan total of 191 as Babbar Azam-led men suffered a collapse, losing the last eight wickets for 36 runs. India won the toss and put Pakistan to bat.

Shubman Gill, who made his first appearance in the ODI World Cup, scored some scintillating hits before losing his wicket. He struck three consecutive fours off Hasan Ali in the second over of the Indian innings.

Shubman was out on Shaheen Shah Afridi’s bowling and the hope his wicket may have generated among Pakistan fans was short-lived.

Virat Kohli joined Rohit, who was smooth in his power hitting. Kohli also came up with some strong blows before he was caught off the bowling of Hasan Ali during the powerplay.

Rohit and Shreyas took charge and strode along even as Pakistan bowlers tried hard to get a breakthrough.

The sea of Indian fans, many of them dressed in blue, cheered and waved as Indian batsmen struck in the match played at the Narendra Modi Stadium here.

Rohit fell short of his well-deserved century by 14 runs. Shaheen claimed his second wicket of the night with Rohit walked back to the pavilion with a score of 86.

In his well-paced innings, Rohit crossed the milestone of 300 ODI sixes which have come in 254 matches. With 351 sixes in 308 games, former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi leads the tally, while West Indies legend Chris Gayle hammered 331 maximums in 301 encounters.

After Rohit’s departure, Shreyas 53* and KL 19* guided India to a comprehensive 7-wicket victory to make it 8-0 in the World Cup between the two arch-rivals.

Earlier in the innings, Indian bowlers shattered Pakistan’s batting lineup as Bumrah, Siraj, Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja bagged two wickets each.

Pakistan were all out for 191 runs in 42.5 overs. Captain Babar Azam scored the highest for Pakistan with 50 (58 balls) while Mohammad Rizwan scored 49.

Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq started in a positive fashion. While playing cautiously against the disciplined Jasprit Bumrah, the duo took their chances against some loose deliveries from Mohammed Siraj.

Rohit, however, persisted with his pacers, and the move bore fruit as ‘Miya Magic’ Siraj struck in the eighth over and got one to jag in, trapping Abdullah Shafique’s leg before.

Imam and captain Babar Azam tried to ensure that Pakistan went ahead at a healthy scoring rate.

Babar got off to a fine start pretty quickly, hitting three fours off Hardik Pandya in his first 10 balls. Just when Pakistan was closing into a run rate close to six, Imam went for an expansive drive and ended up edging a Pandya delivery to wicket-keeper KL Rahul.

Ravindra Jadeja provided India with a chance for another wicket, however, Mohammad Rizwan reviewed and survived the call after it turned out that the ball was straying down the leg side.

hit the pads of Mohammad Rizwan, and the umpire raised his finger. However, Rizwan reviewed and survived the call after it turned out that the ball was straying down the leg side. Rizwan then joined forces with Babar to keep Pakistan close to five at the 20-over mark.

Over the following few overs, India’s spinners consistently controlled the game, with Kuldeep Yadav in particular displaying excellent control. When the Pakistani duo scored 13 runs against Siraj in the 28th over, they were freed from their chains. Babar’s magnificent four through the point against India helped him to his ODI half-century.

But in the 30th over, Siraj beat Babar’s outside edge and his delivery slammed into his off-stump.

India’s star spinner Kuldeep then gave Pakistan two big blows as he removed Saud Shakeel for 6 and Iftikhar Ahmed (4) in the 33rd over.

In the 34th over, Jasprit Bumrah completely bamboozled Rizwan with a beauty and removed the Pakistan batter. Rizwan failed to get to his first ODI fifty against India and went back to Pavellion just one run shy away from fifty.

Bumrah castled another wicket in quick succession as he sent Shadab Khan packing after scoring just 2 runs.

Hardik delivered a superb ball to dismiss Mohammad Nawaz for 4 in the 40th over while in the next over Ravindra Jadeja sent Hasan Ali packing for 12, leaving Pakistan tottering at 187/9.

Jadeja then dismissed Pakistan’s last batter Haris Rauf, bundling out arch-rival for 191 in 42.5 overs.

Brief score: Pakistan 191 (Babar Azam 50, Mohammad Rizwan 49; Jasprit Bumrah 2-19) vs India 192/3 (Rohit Sharma 86, Shreyas Iyer 53*; Shaheen Afridi 2-36). (ANI)

Ferry India-Lanka

Shorter Time, Higher Baggage Allowance; Ferry Service Between India-Lanka Launched

The newly launched passenger ferry service from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthurai will have a travel time of approximately 3-4 hours, sources said.

According to official sources, there will be a higher baggage allowance of 50 kg compared to 15 kg in the Chennai-Jaffna sector by air. Travellers carrying large baggage (50 kg) could easily travel to the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka in 3-4 hours instead of undertaking a long journey by air to Colombo followed by a tedious 8-10 hours’ road journey to the northern part of Sri Lanka.

Pilgrims visiting India could easily travel to Temples (Saneeswaram temple at Thirunallar, Rameshwaram, Madurari and Tanjore), Church (Velankanni) and Mosques (Nagore).

Sources further mentioned that the Ferry will continue until October 2023 this year before the North-East Monsoon sets in Tamil Nadu and the Sri Lankan coast. “Post that ferry operations would be difficult,” it mentioned.

The ferry services will again resume during the post monsoon season or during the fair weather season in January 2024.

Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) will operate the ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai.

Nagapattinam is 60 nautical miles (approximately 110 km) north of Kankesanthurai and the distance could be covered in approx 3-4 hours based on sea conditions.

Earlier on the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (TMB)’s request, MEA had sanctioned Rs 8 crore for the upgradation of Nagpattinam port. The work includes dredging of the channel, and refurbishment of Passenger Terminal Building and approach road.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the launch of ferry services between Nagapattinam and SrilLanka’s Kankesanthurai is an important milestone in strengthening the relations between the two countries.

“We are embarking on a new chapter in the diplomatic and economic relations between India and Sri Lanka. The launch of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai is an important milestone in strengthening our relations,” he said.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday also called the launch of a ferry service between Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam and Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthurai an “important step” in increasing the connectivity between the two nations.

In a video message on the launch of the ferry service, Wickremesinghe stated, “This is an important step in increasing the connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. For thousands of years, people have traversed the Palk Strait to travel from the Indian subcontinent to this island and from Sri Lanka back to the Indian subcontinent. This is how our culture has developed. This is how our trade developed.”

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said that the launch of a passenger ferry service between Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam and Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthurai is “truly a big step” for people-to-people contacts between India and Sri Lanka.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the ferry service between Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam and Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthurai. (ANI)

India Wins Toss; Shubman Gill Returns

India won the toss and opted to field in the marquee World Cup match against Pakistan here on Saturday.

Shubman Gill has returned to the Indian side replacing Ishan Kishan while Pakistan will play with the side that won against Sri Lanka.

“We will bowl first, cannot get bigger than this, fantastic atmosphere. Sure lot of us are going to experience something really extraordinary. It’s a good track, not going to change much. Dew could be a big factor and keeping that in mind, we want to bowl first. We want to keep striving for the best, we want to come out there and give our best in every game. Keeping the atmosphere in the team relaxed is the most important thing in a tournament like this. Gill is back in place of Ishan, unfortunate for Ishan to miss out, feel for him, he stepped up when we needed him.”

Pakistan captain Babar Azam also said they wanted to bowl first.

Indian Withdraws From World Cadet Chess C’ship In Egypt

Amid Israel’s war on Hamas, which followed rocket attacks and a ground assault by the terror group, leaving over 1,300 dead and more than 3,300 injured, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) on Friday withdrew the Indian team from the World Cadet Chess Championship, 2023, which will be held at Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt from October 14 to October 23.

Egypt stands barely 613 km apart from Israel, which is currently carrying out air strikes on suspected Hamas targets in Gaza.

“Considering the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip, between Israel and Hamas, and the age of participants, after due deliberations, it was decided to withdraw the participation of the Indian team in the World Cadet Chess Championship-2023,” read a press release issued by the AICF.

The decision came after due deliberations on the safety of security of the Indian chess masters at the event. Egypt shares a maritime border with both Gaza as well as Israel.

“The All India Chess Federation took this decision considering all the aspects of safety and security of young players as Egypt shares the border with Gaza as well as Israel. Sharm el Sheikh, the host city for the championship is less than 400 KM from the Israel border and the conflict can significantly impact commercial airlines in the Middle East on short notice,” the release stated.

“The Federation took this hard decision based on force majeure and unforeseen scenarios as we give paramount importance to the safety of our players even though our players put in almost one-year training to participate in this important event,” the AICF added in its release.

On October 7, Hamas terrorists launched ‘surprise’ rocket attacks, combined with a ground assault on civilians in Israel.

Israel responded to the attacks with a counter-offensive, which has so far claimed scores of lives on the other side.

At least 1,537 Palestinians have been killed and 6,612 others injured in the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, CNN reported citing the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

At least 36 people have died and more than 650 have been injured in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah. (ANI)
