Indian Cricket Fraternity Lauds Shami Following Arjuna Award Honour

Several members of the Indian cricket fraternity congratulated pacer Mohammed Shami after he received Arjuna Award from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony here.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the governing body of cricket in India, took to X and said it is “memorable moment” for the pacer.

“A memorable moment for #TeamIndia pacer Mohd. Shami who is conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu at the National Sports Awards #NationalSportsAwards | @rashtrapatibhvn| @MdShami11,” it said.

Star India batter Virat Kohli congratulated Shami by commenting on his Instagram post.

“Mubarak ho lala,” Virat said.

Former Indian batter and captain Mithali Raj congratulated Shami and other athletes who received the Arjuna Award, calling it a “testament to their soaring achievements for India”.

“Heartiest congratulations to @MdShami11 and the other 25 athletes who have received the Arjuna Award for their sporting excellence in 2023! This award is a testament to their soaring achievements for India. #ArjunaAward,” she said.

India’s former World Cup-winning all-rounder Yuvraj Singh posted an Instagram story to laud Shami and said it was “result of his hard work”.

Indian spin veteran Yuzvendra Chahal expressed his happiness at Shami being honoured.

“Congratulations @MdShami11 bhai for receiving the prestigious, Arjuna Award You deserved it,” said Chahal.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan lauded Shami’s accomplishment, saying that his “skill, hard work and passion for cricket truly shine”.

Former Indian middle-order batter VVS Laxman said it is a fabulous achievement. “Many congratulations @MdShami11 on this fabulous achievement. Truly deserve this great honour.”

The Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sports honour, is given for good performance over a period of the previous four years and for showing qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and a sense of discipline.

Shami ended as the leading wicket-taker in last year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in India with 24 scalps and broke several records. He was crucial in helping India reach the finals. He was also part of the team which finished as runners-up in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23. (ANI)

Unfit Shami ruled out of Test series against Proteas

Star India pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the upcoming two Test matches against South Africa after he failed to recover from the injury he sustained during the ODI World Cup earlier this year.

In a further blow, seamer Deepak Chahar withdrew himself from the ODI series, which kicks off on Sunday, citing a family medical emergency.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that rising Bengal fast bowler Akash Deep will replace Chahar in the ODI squad against the Proteas.

“Deepak Chahar has informed the BCCI that he will not be available for the upcoming ODI series due to a family medical emergency. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Akash Deep as his replacement,” BCCI stated in an official release.

The apex governing body of Indian cricket stated further that the BCCI’s Medical Team did not clear Shami for the upcoming Test series after assessing his recovery and fitness.

In another development, the BCCI informed that Shreyas Iyer will join the red-ball squad to prepare for the Test series and will not be available for the second and third ODIs.

“Mohd Shami, whose participation in the Test series was subject to fitness, has not been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team and the fast bowler is ruled out of the two Tests. After the conclusion of the first ODI in Johannesburg on 17th December, Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad to prepare for the Test series. He will not be available for the second and third ODI and will take part in the inter-squad game,” the BCCI added in the release.

The first match of the ODI series will be hosted at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday while the second and third matches will be played on December 19 and December 21, respectively.

The first red-ball fixture will be hosted from December 26 while the second Test will be played from January 3. (ANI)

Mohd Shami Clinches 100th IPL Wicket In Match Against CSK

Mohammed Shami bagged his 100th wicket on Friday in the opening match of Indian Premier League 2023 season.

He achieved the feat in the match against Chennai Super Kings and Devon Conway became his 100th wicket in IPL. Conway failed to read Shami’s delivery and ended up missing the ball completely and the stumps went flying into the air.
Shami has played 94 IPL matches and his best figures are 3/15. With an economy of 8.48, Shami has managed to maintain his economy quite well as a pace bowler.

Shami’s 100th wicket also became the first wicket of IPL 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad struck the first four and six of the 16th edition of IPL. The match is being played at the Narendra Modi stadium.

The 32-year-old pace bowler’s experience has always come in handy for GT as also the Indian team. Shami is the 19th player to achieve 100-wicket milestone in the IPL.

Chennai Super Kings Dwayne Bravo is the leading wicket-taker in IPL with 183 wickets in 161 matches and an economy of 8.38.

Mumbai Indians legend Lasith Malinga holds the second position with 170 wickets in 122 matches with an economy of 7.14. Malinga spent over a decade with MI.

The 32-year-old Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has 166 wickets in 131 matches with an economy of 7.61. (ANI)
