Kohli Runs In ODIs

Kohli Breaks Sachin’s Record, Becomes Fastest Player To Reach 13,000 Runs In ODIs

India’s batting talisman Virat Kohli on Monday created a record by becoming the fastest to reach 13,000 runs in the ODI format.

Kohli achieved the milestone during the Asia Cup Super 4 clash against arch-rival Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Monday.

He broke a long-standing Sachin Tendulkar record during a brilliant ODI knock against Pakistan.

Kohli is the fifth player to reach the landmark in men’s ODIs.

Apart from Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene are the other cricketers to reach the milestone.

Tendulkar took 321 innings to get to the mark and Kohli has reached the milestone in 267 innings. Ponting (341) and Sangakkara (363) also took over 300 innings while Jayasuriya reached the mark in 416 innings.

Kohli is also the only batter among the five to average over 50. With 47 ODI hundreds, Kohli is also just two away from equalling Tendulkar’s record tally of ODI tons. (ANI)

Agarkar BCCI Chairman

BCCI Appoints Agarkar As Chairman Of Senior Men’s Selection Committee

Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the Chairman of Senior Men’s Selection Committee by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday.

BCCI released an official statement to announce his appointment which read, “The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape, interviewed applicants for the position of one selector in the Men’s Selection Committee. The three-member CAC has unanimously recommended Mr Ajit Agarkar for the said position.”
The committee further recommended Agarkar for the role of Chairperson of the Men’s Selection Committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches).

Men’s Selection Committee: Ajit Agarkar (Chairperson), Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sridharan Sharath.

Agarkar has been one of the most decorated players in the history of Indian ODI cricket as he has made over 191 appearances and picked up 288 wickets with a cost-efficient economy of 5.07. In Test format, Agarkar has featured 26 times and bagged 58 scalps with an economy of 3.39. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Agarkar played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He made 42 appearances and picked up 29 wickets with an economy of 8.83.

Agarkar shared some memorable moments with the bat despite his prowess with the ball. The biggest moment of his international career with the bat came in 2002 when he scored a century against England at Lord’s. With this breathtaking knock, his name is now on the Lord’s Honor Board.

He even went on to break the record for scoring the fastest half-century in the ODI. Agarkar smacked an unbeaten 67(27)* while batting at number eight against Zimbabwe in 2000.

He also broke Australia’s pacer Dennis Lillee’s record of clinching the fastest 50 wickets in the ODI format. Lillee achieved the remarkable feat in 24 matches. But Agarkar managed to break Lille’s record in his 23rd ODI match.

The Indian pacer held the record for almost a decade but in 2009, Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis overtook him by reaching the milestone in his 19th ODI. (ANI)

Shreyas, Siraj Find Berth In ICC's ODI Team For 2022

Shreyas, Siraj Find Berth In ICC’s ODI Team For 2022

Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Siraj became the only Indians to feature in the ODI team of the year for 2022, announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday.

The ICC Team of the Year recognises 11 outstanding individuals who have impressed one and all – be it with the bat, the ball or their all-around exploits in a calendar year.

  1. Babar Azam (c) – Pakistan Pakistan captain Babar Azam once again showed his prowess in the 50-over format, displaying once again why he has ruled the roost at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings since July 2021. In the nine matches Babar played this year, the 28-year-old registered eight scores of more than fifty, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the year with 679 runs at a stunning average of 84.87. It was a memorable year for Babar as captain of the Pakistan ODI team, winning three series out of three. Pakistan were unstoppable in the ODI format, losing just one match (against Australia) out of nine. His leadership skills means that he leads the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2022.
  2. Travis Head – Australia With former skipper Aaron Finch calling it quits from the 50-over format, Australia have already found his long-term successor at the top of the order. Usually an attacking middle-order batter, Head brilliantly reinvented himself as an opener in ODIs, becoming one of Australia’s most consistent batters in the format. It was a year to remember for Head – who became one of the first names on the Australian team sheet – notching up 550 runs from nine games at 68.75. His runs came at a strike-rate of 112.24 and included two centuries and three fifties.
  3. Shai Hope – West Indies Hope had a brilliant year in 2022, being at his consistent best for the West Indies in the 50-over format. Hope did not get off to the greatest of starts in 2022 but in typical fashion started to grind out runs in the latter half. He finished the year with 709 runs, which include three hundreds and two fifties, at an average of 35.45.
  4. Shreyas Iyer – India Shreyas Iyer emerged from 2022 as one of India’s most consistent batters in the 50-over format while also become the anchor of their middle-order. Mostly slotting in at No.4, Iyer played 17 games during the calendar year and scored 724 runs at an average of 55.69. His scored his runs at a brisk pace of 91.52, which included one century and six fifties. With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fast approaching, Iyer has moved ahead of the competition to become a regular fixture in the India ODI setup.
  5. Tom Latham (wk) – New Zealand Often regarded as a solid batter, Tom Latham added a new dimension to his game in 2022, often playing the role of a finisher from the No.5 position. Latham scored 558 runs from 15 matches at an average of 55.80 and a sizzling strike-rate of 101.27. He notched up two fifties and two centuries in the year becoming a vital cog of the New Zealand middle-order. Latham was also solid behind the stumps, affecting 16 dismissals.
  6. Sikandar Raza – Zimbabwe 2022 witnessed the resurgence of Zimbabwe on the international scene and a lot of it was down to one man – Sikandar Raza. Raza aggregated 645 runs at an average of 49.61 and strike rate of 87.16, making two fifties to complement three centuries. With ball in hand, Raza was ever-reliable, scalping eight wickets while giving away just more than five an over.
  7. Mehidy Hasan Miraz – Bangladesh Mehidy Hasan Miraz emerged as one of the most consistent all-rounders in ODI cricket in 2022, with some brilliant displays. With his bowling as effective as ever, Miraz developed his batting further, often bailing Bangladesh out of some tough situations. He picked up 24 wickets in 15 games at an average of 28.20 with a best performance of 4/29. He also scored 330 runs at a stunning average of 66, with one century and one fifty.
  8. Alzarri Joseph – West Indies Joseph developed from a highly-rated prospect to a reliable performance with the ball for the West Indies in the year 2022. Not lacking in pace but sometimes in accuracy, Joseph worked on his shortcomings and became a fearsome prospect for the batters to face. Joseph played 17 matches and scalped 27 wickets at an average of 25.70 and a strike-rate of 33.4. He was also miserly with an economy rate of 4.61, with best figures of 3/36.
  9. Mohammed Siraj – India Mohammed Siraj’s skillset in white-ball cricket, especially the 50-over format developed in leaps and bounds in 2022. With Jasprit Bumrah often missing due to injury, Siraj emerged as the most potent weapon of the India pace unit. Delivering with both the new and old ball, Siraj played 15 matches and picked up 24 wickets. His wickets came at an economy of 4.62 and an average of 23.50, with best figures of 3/29. Siraj has moved ahead of the pack and has a good chance of being a part of the India pace battery come the Cricket World Cup in home conditions scheduled for later this year.
  10. Trent Boult – New Zealand The left-arm pacer has been a beacon of consistency for almost a decade and the year 2022 was no different. Batters again struggled to counter his swing with the new ball, while finding it troubling to face him due to his skills in the middle and death overs. Boult played only six games in 2022 but made a massive impact in them. He scalped 18 wickets at a stunning average of 12.38 and a miserly economy of 3.98, with best figures of 4/38. Another year, another sensational set of displays from the consistent New Zealand seamer.
  11. Adam Zampa – Australia Adam Zampa continued to show why he has been such a vital cog in the Australian white-ball setup, finishing the year as the highest wicket-taker for his country in ODI cricket. The leggie enjoyed his joint-most prolific year in ODI cricket, matching his tally of 30 wickets from his debut year in 2016. His feat was even more impressive this year considering nine of the 12 matches he played were at home, where conditions aren’t favourable for spinners. (ANI)

India Registers Biggest Win In ODI, Victorious By Margin Of 300 Runs

India Registers Biggest Win In ODI, Victorious By Margin Of 300 Runs

Team India became the first-ever team in ODI cricket to register a win by 300 runs or more, becoming the team with the biggest victory margin in terms of runs in the history of 50-over format on Sunday.

The Men in Blue accomplished this during their third and final ODI against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram.
Centuries from Virat Kohli (166*) and opener Shubman Gill (116) powered India to 390/5 in their 50 overs. In their chase of 391, Lanka did not put up even an inch of fight and the match appeared to be over after Mohammed Siraj (4/32) delivered a brutal powerplay spell. The visitors were bundled out for 73 runs and India won the match by 317 runs.

Previously, the biggest win by runs in ODI cricket was recorded by New Zealand. Back in July 2008 at Aberdeen, they defeated Ireland by 290 runs after setting up for them a target of 403 runs.

Coming to the match, a destructive powerplay spell from Mohammed Siraj continued Sri Lanka’s downfall for the third straight ODI, helping the hosts clinch a massive 317-run win in the final ODI at Kerala on Sunday.

With this, India has won the ODI series 3-0.

Chasing 391, Sri Lanka once again experienced troubles in tackling Mohammed Siraj with the new ball. The pacer wasted no time and dismissed opener Avishka Fernando (1) and Kusal Mendis (4), reducing SL to 22/2 in four overs.

Sri Lanka was looking forward to build a partnership after this. However, Siraj did not let the visitors catch a break. After his senior pace partner Mohammed Shami sent back Charith Asalanka for just one run, the 28-year-old pacer continued his powerplay exploits, dismissing Nuwanidu Fernando (19), who was the only double-digit scorer for SL till yet and all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (1). At the end of the first mandatory powerplay, SL was 39/5, with Chamika Karunaratne (1) joined by skipper Dasun Shanaka (4). Siraj could simply do no wrong as he ran out Karunaratne for just one. The alarms sounded wildly for the Asian champions, who were reduced to 39/6.

SL managed to cross the 50-run mark in 14.2 overs. But it was Kuldeep Yadav, which gave India spin its first success of the match, dismissing skipper Shanaka for 11 off 26 balls.

Shami dismissed Dunith Wellalage for just three runs, continuing SL’s downward spiral. The visitors were left reeling at 51/8.

Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Lahiru Kumara for nine off 19 balls, ending the first 20-run plus stand of SL’s innings. Kuldeep got his second wicket of the match. With the last batter Ashen Bandara retired hurt, SL was deemed all out at 73 and India registered a massive 317-run win to clean sweep the series.

Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking 4/32. Kuldeep and Shami also took two wickets each.

Earlier, centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubhman Gill helped India post a mammoth total of 390 runs against Sri Lanka in the third ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Virat (166*) played a breathtaking knock while Gill (116) played a scintillating knock to present a strong case for himself as Rohit Sharma’s batting partner for the upcoming World Cup. The former India captain was also involved in two-century stands. Kasun Rajitha picked two wickets for the visitors. Opting to bat first, the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill started steadily. But once they got their eyes set, the pair went ballistic and began to find boundaries regularly.

The hosts were 11/0 at the end of four overs but went hell for leather in the next six to take India to 75/0 at the end of 10 overs with the Indian captain batting at 36(32) and Gill 35(28). Rohit looked set for a big score after missing out in the first two ODIs but was dismissed in the 16th over by Chamika Karunaratne for 42(49). The right-hander’s downfall came off a short-pitched delivery, trying to send it over the fence but could only time it to find Avishka Fernando at deep backward square leg.

However, Gill continued his rich vein of form in ODIs and ensured that the hosts kept scoring at a brisk rate. Virat Kohli took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers right from the word go. Gill survived a close call in the 24th over against Wanindu Hasaranga after being struck on the pads while attempting a sweep. The right-hander then went on to score his second ODI hundred off just 89 balls in the 31st over. Virat too reached his half-century in the same over helping extend India’s dominance in the match.

The Indian opener struck four boundaries in the next over against Jeffrey Vandersay before being dismissed for 116(97) that included 14 boundaries and two massive sixes. Gill shared a massive 131-run partnership with the former India captain.

Virat had a stroke of luck when batting on 82(76), Vandersay misjudged a catch on the ropes and failed to grab the catch. The 34-year-old made the most of the reprieve and went on to smash his 46th ODI century.

Shreyas Iyer too made use of the excellent batting conditions on offer and kept striking boundaries regularly but was dismissed for 38(32) in the quest for more quick runs.

KL Rahul (7) and Suryakumar Yadav (4) perished while trying to end the Indian innings with a flourish. Both the batters were dismissed in deep extra cover while trying to send the ball over the ropes.

‘King Kohli’ as he is known by his fans, unleashed a flurry of strokes after reaching his hundred. The right-hander struck seven sixes after reaching his hundred and raced to 166* in the last over. He struck two sixes in the last over to help India end with 390/5 in the second ODI.

Brief score: India 390/5 (Virat Kohli 166, Shubhman Gill 116; Kasun Rajitha 2-81) defeated Sri Lanka 73 (Nuwanidu Fernando 19, Kasun Rajitha 13, Mohammed Siraj 4/32). (ANI)
