Mohammed Shami

Unfit Shami ruled out of Test series against Proteas

Star India pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the upcoming two Test matches against South Africa after he failed to recover from the injury he sustained during the ODI World Cup earlier this year.

In a further blow, seamer Deepak Chahar withdrew himself from the ODI series, which kicks off on Sunday, citing a family medical emergency.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that rising Bengal fast bowler Akash Deep will replace Chahar in the ODI squad against the Proteas.

“Deepak Chahar has informed the BCCI that he will not be available for the upcoming ODI series due to a family medical emergency. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Akash Deep as his replacement,” BCCI stated in an official release.

The apex governing body of Indian cricket stated further that the BCCI’s Medical Team did not clear Shami for the upcoming Test series after assessing his recovery and fitness.

In another development, the BCCI informed that Shreyas Iyer will join the red-ball squad to prepare for the Test series and will not be available for the second and third ODIs.

“Mohd Shami, whose participation in the Test series was subject to fitness, has not been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team and the fast bowler is ruled out of the two Tests. After the conclusion of the first ODI in Johannesburg on 17th December, Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad to prepare for the Test series. He will not be available for the second and third ODI and will take part in the inter-squad game,” the BCCI added in the release.

The first match of the ODI series will be hosted at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday while the second and third matches will be played on December 19 and December 21, respectively.

The first red-ball fixture will be hosted from December 26 while the second Test will be played from January 3. (ANI)

Virat Kohli Australia

Kohli Becomes Second-Highest Run Scorer In History Of ODI WC

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli overtook former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting and became the second-highest run scorer in the history of the ODI World Cup on Sunday.

Following his 54-run match against Australia in the final match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Virat scored an overall 1,795 runs after playing 37 matches at an average of 59.83.

In his 37 games at the ODI World Cup, the former India skipper smashed five centuries and 12 fifties. His best score is 117.

Virat has gone past Ricky Ponting (1,743 runs) to become the second-highest run scorer in the history of the World Cup. Currently, the top run-scorer in WC cricket is Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. The ‘Master Blaster’ scored 2,278 runs in 44 innings with six centuries and 15 fifties.

The 36-year-old also ended his ODI World Cup 2023 journey with the most runs by a batter in a single edition of the prestigious tournament and overtook Tendulkar’s 673 runs scored by him in 2003.

Virat ended with the most fifty-plus scores in a single World Cup edition with nine half-centuries and passed through Tendulkar’s seven fifties in 2003 and Shakib al Hasan in 2019.

In the 28.3 overs, Pat Cummins picked up a humongous wicket after he dismissed the highest run scorer of the ongoing tournament. The Aussie skipper delivered a short-length ball that took an inside edge and got into the stumps, which forced Kohli to move out of the crease on Sunday.

Pat Cummins-led Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first against India in the World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The ‘Men in Blue’ will be looking forward to getting hold of the World Cup title for the third time; meanwhile, the Aussies will be aiming to clinch their sixth trophy.

Bumrah video of his bowling in nets

Star Pacer Bumrah Posts Video Of His Bowling In Nets

Amid speculation over his fitness, India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has apparently increased the frequency of his bowling in the nets.

The ace pacer posted a video on social media where he is seen bowling in the nets.
The pacer’s recovery indicates that he may be fit before the next Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.

Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 owing to his injury and missed the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He also missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, a tournament in which he represents Mumbai Indians.

In April, Bumrah underwent surgery on his lower back in New Zealand. While fans wait to see Bumrah back on the field with his unique bowling action, he has been unable to join the team due to a recurring injury. He has attempted to make a comeback more than once since suffering a back injury in August last year.

Initially, the injury did not seem serious as he was named in India’s T20 World Cup squad in September and even played the last two T20Is against Australia on September 23 and September 25 last year.

Three days later, Bumrah did not play the first T20I against South Africa and it was learnt that he was taken for scans, which revealed a stress-related injury in his back. He was rushed to NCA and the scans confirmed that the injury was serious. It ruled him out of the T20 World Cup, in which India achieved a semi-final finish.

Bumrah resumed his rehab in November and started to bowl in mid-December. His progress seemed to be positive as he was added to the white-ball series played in January against Sri Lanka more than a week after the original squad was picked up.

Bumrah performed the match simulation exercises in the NCA, but discomfort resurfaced while taking up higher workloads during fitness drills in January. Scans revealed the development of a fresh niggle, which ruled him out of the Sri Lanka series and Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

India’s star batter KL Rahul, who is recuperating from a thigh injury that he sustained while playing for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL 2023), hinted his return as he posted a picture where he can be seen resting after a training session.

After a successful surgery on May 9 in England, Rahul reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to begin his recovery. He has hinted that he is getting close to being fully healthy, much to the pleasure of his supporters.

World Cup will be held in India from October 5. (ANI)
