‘Forcible Removal of Farmers From Shambhu Border a Heartless Act by AAP Govt’

Nidhi Arora, who has been a keen watcher of farmer protest, says Punjab Police action raises more questions than it answers. Her views:

The sudden removal of farmers protesting at the Shambhu border by Punjab Police has left many stunned. For months, these farmers had been braving the elements, holding onto their demands for fair policies and the fulfilment of promises made to them. And then, overnight, everything was wiped away. The protest site was cleared in a swift police action, leaving people questioning—was this done to ease trade disruptions, or was there something more to it?

As someone born and raised in Chandigarh but now living in NCR, I have been keenly watching this drama unfold from a distance, yet it feels very personal. The Shambhu border had become a symbol of resistance, a place where farmers, many of them old and frail, sat day after day, hoping for justice. The police acted quickly, without much confrontation, but the suddenness of it all has led to speculation.

Some say the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government was under pressure from local and state traders who had been facing logistical nightmares due to the blocked highway. With trade routes disrupted and transporters complaining of losses, was this a move to appease business interests rather than address the genuine grievances of farmers?

Of late, the Aam Aadmi Party has been struggling to find its moorings. While it suffered a humiliating defeat in Delhi Assembly elections, in Punjab its balancing act has never been easy. On one side, the party has traditionally championed itself as pro-farmer political entity. On the other, governance means keeping businesses run smoothly. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, caught between these two forces, had to make a choice, and he chose to side with business community. But clearing the site without offering a concrete solution to the farmers only deepens suspicions—was this truly for public welfare, or was it a calculated move to keep influential economic players happy?

Of course, there’s another side to the story. There have been media reports quoting government sources that the eviction was primarily a law-and-order measure. There had been reports quoting intelligence output that suggested that prolonged sit-ins at protest sites could turn volatile. Indeed, the everyday commuter had been facing difficulties, and there were concerns about public inconvenience. Maybe, from an administrative perspective, the removal was simply about restoring normalcy. But the sudden action in the late hours raises many doubts too.

The biggest question now is: where does this leave the protesting farmers? Many of them are still dealing with the trauma of the 2020-21 agitation. They feel abandoned. The way the protest was dismantled—without dialogue, without an alternative forum for discussion—only reinforces their belief that they are being sidelined. For them, this isn’t just about MSPs and agricultural policies; it’s about dignity, about being heard.

I can’t help but wonder—where does this leave us as a society? The struggle between economic progress and social justice is an ongoing one. Governments will always have to walk that fine line. But if farmers, the backbone of our nation, continue to feel unheard, how long before this unrest spills over again? For now, the debate rages on, and only time will tell if this was truly an administrative decision or a political compromise.

Bathinda Military Station Firing

Bathinda Military Station Firing: Soldier Confesses Role

An Army personnel detained by Punjab Police in connection with the April 12 firing at the Bathinda Military Station has confessed to involvement in killing four of his colleagues, the Indian Army said in a statement on Monday.

After sustained interrogation, Gunner Desai Mohan, from the Artillery unit where the incident occurred has confessed to police to his involvement in stealing an INSAS rifle and killing four of his colleagues, according to the statement by South Western Command Headquarters, Indian Army.

Initial investigations indicated that personal reasons or animosity could be reasons for the shooting.

Referring to his confession, the Army said that Mohan had stolen the weapon along with a filled magazine in the early morning hours of April 9 and hid it somewhere. On April 12, at around 4.30 am while he was on sentry duty, he moved to the first floor and killed all four personnel while they were asleep.

Mohan then threw the rifle into a sewage pit. The weapon and additional ammunition have been recovered from the sewage pit, said the Army statement.

The statement made by Desai Mohan while filing the initial FIR on April 12, mentioning two persons in civil dress with INSAS rifle and axe was an attempt to divert the attention of investigating agencies.

Mohan is currently in police custody and further details are being ascertained.

“There is no terror angle as speculated earlier in some media reports,” said South Western Command Headquarters, Indian Army.

“Indian Army practices zero tolerance to such acts of indiscipline and is committed to ensure that the guilty will get punished as per law. All possible assistance is being provided to Punjab Police and other agencies for the early conclusion of investigations,” said the Army statement.

Four Army jawans were killed in their sleep in the firing incident which took place on April 12. According to Punjab Police, the four slain jawans have been identified as Sagar, Kamlesh, Santosh and Yogesh.

They were asleep in their rooms post the end of duty when two masked men, in white kurta pyjamas, attacked them with rifles and sharp-edged weapons. The four jawans were found in a pool of blood in their rooms.

The police informed that one of the weapons used in the crime was seized. Four army personnel of an artillery unit succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during the incident.

According to the Army statement, no other injuries to personnel or damage to property have been reported in the incident.

The Army said an INSAS rifle along with 28 rounds were reportedly missing for the past two days and some personnel might be behind this incident. Following the incident, the area was cordoned off and the army conducted a joint investigation with the Punjab Police to establish the facts of the case.

Sources said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also received a briefing on the incident from Army Chief General Manoj Pandey. (ANI)

Amritpal’s Aide Papalpreet Singh Arrested

In a major crackdown against ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief, the Punjab Police in a joint operation arrested pro-Khalistani sympathizer Amritpal Singh’s aide Papalpreet Singh arrested from Hoshiarpur, informed sources on Monday.

Papalpreet Singh was arrested in an operation conducted by Punjab Police and its counter-intelligence unit.
On March 30, ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh surfaced in a new video and said he was not “a fugitive” and would soon “appear in front of the world”.

In the unverified video, Amritpal Singh sought to address some comments about the video that surfaced on Wednesday.

“I uploaded a video yesterday. It was addressed to people. Public thinks that maybe the video was made in police custody because I was looking here and there in that video while talking. You can see other earlier video, I don’t talk too much looking at the camera,” he said.

Amritpal Singh said those who think that he has run away or left friends, “get that thing out of your mind”.

Earlier on March 18, Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal and his aides.

According to the police, the accused identified as Amrik Singh, a resident of RS Pura, and his wife Paramjit Kour were detained for reportedly having links with Papalpreet Singh, a key aide of Amritpal Singh.

The accused duo were handed over to Punjab police later, an officer of Jammu police said.

Delhi Police said that the head of the pro-Khalistani outfit Waris Punjab De is suspected of having left the national capital.

According to sources, Delhi Police and Punjab Police were conducting a search operation in Delhi and its borders after receiving intelligence inputs of a sighting of Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal at Delhi’s ISBT bus terminal.

Intelligence inputs had suggested that he may be disguised as a sadhu. Papalpreet Singh is accompanying Amritpal Singh, sources said.

The Punjab Police had expressed doubts about Amritpal entering the Delhi border using any vehicle other than a bus. Following the input, Delhi Police went on alert mode and are trying to track Amritpal’s movements.

Amritpal is on the run since March 18, the day Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt for him.

The crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters stormed Ajnala police station in Amritsar on February 23 demanding the release of one of his close aides, Lovepreet Toofan. (ANI)
