Several Bollywood Personalities Want #JusticeForRhea

Several Bollywood personalities on Tuesday demanded justice for actor Rhea Chakraborty by posting a quote on smashing the “patriarchy” and a hashtag #JusticeForRhea.

This comes briefly after the Narcotics Control Bureau arrested Chakraborty in a drug case linked to the demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Celebrities like Vidya Balan, Shibani Dandekar, Anurag Kashyap, and others took to social media to share a quote that was written on the T-shirt that Rhea had worn on Tuesday which happened to be her third day of interrogation with the bureau.

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Let’s smash the patriarchy me and you,” the quote read.

While celebrities like Dia Mirza, Shaheen Bhatt, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Huma Qureshi only posted the quote on social media, others like Vidya Balan, Shibani Dandekar, Anurag Kashyap, and musician Ankur Tewari complimented it with “#JusticeForRhea.”

Actor Sonam Kapoor on the other hand, penned down a quote on “witch hunt” by American novelist Walter Kirn.

“Everyone loves a witch hunt as long as it’s someone else’s witch being hunted. Walter Kirn,” she wrote in the caption.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday said that after assessment, besides the Y plus security, the DGP has decided to provide actor Kangana Ranaut with extra security at her house in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Thakur said, “Kangana Ranaut is scheduled to go to Mumbai on September 9. We are assessing the situation that might arise there. As far as Himachal Pradesh is considered, she is safe here. But despite that, we have directed DGP to give her proper security. After the assessment, the DGP has decided to place a guard at her house, and PSO (Personal Security Officer). In all, seven police personnel of Himachal Pradesh police will be present at her house.”

“Moreover, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved Y+ security to her, 11 CRPF personnel have been deployed for the same,” Thakur said.

“Her sister called me and her father wrote to me after which this decision was taken. I also spoke to Kangana ji and she thanked me for the moral support at this time. She will return back to Himachal after 4-5 days,” he added.

On Monday, Thakur had said that the state government has decided to provide security to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut after conducting a security assessment.

The development comes a day after Ranaut’s father wrote to the Chief Minister asking him to provide security for his daughter in the light of her recent spat with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. (ANI)

3 Arrests That Disclose Drug Mafia’s Nexus With Filmdom

In a battery of recent arrests from film industry, the most high-profile being the arrest of Rhea Chakraborty on Tuesday, an unholy nexus of Indian filmdom and drug mafia is emerging to the fore.

On September 4, Kannada actress Ragini Dwivedi was arrested for allegedly being part of a drug cartel, along with several others from Kerala and Karnataka, including an African national. According to Bengaluru Police, the Narcotics Control Bureau had arrested several drug peddlers on August 21, which led them to Kannada film personalities procuring and passing on the drugs.

The glamworld and drug mafia links become clearer from the remand application of actor Rhea Chakraborty filed in Mumbai court by the NCB officials. The plea has stated that Chakraborty had been an active member of a “drug syndicate” and at times even financed for drug procurement along with his late boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput.

The Bureau said that Chakraborty’s disclosure/statement had made it clear that she was connected with drug supplies. Her involvement in the procurement of drugs and financial transactions is believed to be linked to Dipesh Sawant, Showik Chakraborty and Miranda, all three now in custody.

On Tuesday, while the national media was busy reporting arrest of actress Rhea Chakraborty in Mumbai, yet another Kannada actress, Sanjana Galrani, was arrested by the Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru Police in Sandalwood drug bust racket (Kannada film industry is known as Sandalwood a la Bollywood).

LokMarg spoke to several narcotics experts who reaffirmed that there exists a deep nexus between the glamour world and drug mafia in the country. Besides, Bollywood and Sandalwood, Telugu, Malayalam and other regional cine industries are involved in this cartel. Other than the film world, the fashion & advertisement are also believed to be the part of this nexus.

Owaisi’s Party Opposes Bharat Ratna to Narasimha Rao

Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) members on Tuesday boycotted the Telangana State Legislative Assembly in which it has unanimously passed a resolution requesting the central government to confer the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna posthumously on former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.

“Our party’s stand was clearly stated on the floor of the Assembly on February 15, 2005, when the then Chief Minister Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy had moved the condolence resolution on the demise of the former PM. I may recall that our party’s floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi had pointed out that the Indian Muslims were still angry with the former PM over the demolition of Babri Masjid,” AIMIM MLA and general secretary Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri said while speaking to ANI.

Quadri said that party or “even history, will not forget the demolition of Babri Masjid, which was caused by Rao’s political inaction as the Prime Minister of India.”

He alleged that “By remaining a silent spectator to the demolition of Babri Masjid and by allowing the construction of a makeshift temple on December 6, 1992, Narasimha Rao was responsible for the rise of Hindutva forces and majoritarian communalism directed against the minorities in general and Muslims in particular in the country in the last three decades. This paved the way for the NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee during 1998-2004 and again the present BJP government since 2014.”

“We do not want to recall Narasimha Rao’s actions vis-a-vis the Muslims in the united Andhra Pradesh State when he became the Chief Minister in 1971 after Telangana agitation was ruthlessly suppressed with the killing of 300 youth by the then Congress regime.” He added.

AIMIM had earlier stated that it “could never forget the fact that it was during his regime that Babri Masjid at Ayodhya was demolished”.

“Simultaneously the AIMIM Legislative members have boycotted today’s proceedings in Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council during which the resolution was passed. Our Party Cannot Support resolution and discussion on Centenary Celebrations of Late P.V Narasimha Rao,” it said.

The Telangana assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution urging the central government to confer the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna posthumously on former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.

The resolution described the late leader as the son of Telangana and a statesman and said he was the first person from South India to become the Prime Minister of the country. The Telangana government earlier this year launched the birth centenary celebration of Narasimha Rao. (ANI)

Narcotics Bureau Arrests Rhea Chakraborty

Actor Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday in a drug case linked with Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

“Actor Rhea Chakraborty arrested by Narcotics Control Bureau in Mumbai,” said KPS Malhotra, Deputy Director, NCB.

She is the ninth person arrested in the ongoing case by the NCB.

Earlier in the day, Chakraborty reached NCB office in Mumbai for the third consecutive day for interrogation.

Her brother Showik Chakraborty and her associate Samuel Miranda have also been arrested in the same case. Both of them have been sent to the NCB custody till September 9.

Chakraborty had earlier filed a complaint before Mumbai Police requesting that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered against Sushant Singh Rajput’s sister, Priyanka Singh, Dr Tarun Kumar of RML Hospital, Delhi and others under IPC, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines.

In her complaint to the Senior Inspector of Police, Bandra Police Station, Chakraborty stated that Priyanka Singh had sent Rajput a prescription by Dr Tarun Kumar and he “appears to have prescribed medication controlled under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 to Sushant without any consultation as mandated by law.”

The case filed on the complaint of actor Rhea Chakraborty had been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as per the orders by the Supreme Court, according to the Mumbai Police on Tuesday.

“As per the complaint of Rhea Chakraborty, a case had been registered at Bandra police station under sections of IPC, and NDPS Act. In line with the orders by the Supreme Court of India, the case has been transferred to the CBI for further investigation,” Mumbai Police spokesperson, N Ambika said.

The CBI has registered an FIR against Chakraborty and others in connection with the actor’s death. The Enforcement Directorate had on July 31 registered an Enforcement Case Information Report in the late actor’s death case after an FIR was filed by Rajput’s father KK Singh against Rhea Chakraborty in Bihar on July 28.

India’s Fiscal Deficit To Widen To 8.2% In FY21: Fitch

Fitch Solutions has revised its fiscal deficit forecast for India to 8.2 per cent from 7.2 per cent earlier due to quicker divergence in expenditures and non-debt receipts which saw the deficit exceed the full-year target in only four months.

Accordingly, including the state deficit, the total government deficit forecast for FY21 is 11.8 per cent of GDP. “Our revision is due to a higher than previously anticipated willingness of the government to spend amid weak revenue collection,” it said.

“We expect the government to maintain its spending expansion through increased government securitiesissuances that will be absorbed by the banking sector under an increased statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) threshold up to March 31, which allows more funds to be invested in these securities.”

The Reserve Bank of India’s announcement that SLR for banks will be raised to 22 per cent of net demand and time liabilities up to March 31 from 18 per cent at present indicate the government will seek to ramp up its borrowing through bond issuances over the coming months with local banks being the bulk of the lenders.

“We maintain our FY21 central government revenue forecast at minus 18.4 per cent,” said Fitch Solutions. Revenue collection over the first four months of FY21 suffered a major hit as a result of a slump in economic activity in light of the nationwide Covid-19 induced lockdown from March 25 to May 31.

“However, we expect a gradual recovery in the economy over the coming months to support improvement in revenue collection.”

Non-debt receipts over the first four months of FY21 amounted to Rs 2.3 lakh crore, a 42 per cent year-on-year decline over FY20. The Centre’s gross tax revenue also suffered, falling by 29.6 per cent over the first four months of FY21 to Rs 3.8 lakh crore from Rs 5.4 lakh crore in FY20.

Among indirect taxes, Centre Goods and Services Tax fell by 34 per cent over the period to Rs 92,900 crore while a slump in the trade as a result of lockdown restrictions also saw custom duties fall by 54 per cent to Rs 23,700 crore over the period.

However, a sharp increase in central excise duty on petrol and diesel from Rs 22.09 per litre and Rs 18.83 per litre respectively on March 14 to Rs 32.98 per litre for both categories by May 6, supported a 23.7 per cent rise in excise duties to Rs 67,900 crore over the period.

For direct taxes, corporate taxes recorded a fall of 39.2 per cent to Rs 53,700 crore and income taxes fell by 29.1 per cent to Rs 91,200 crore.

Fitch Solutions said it has revised its FY21 central government expenditure forecasts to 12.7 per cent over FY20 revised estimates from 6.5 per cent previously, putting in line with the FY21 Union Budget projections.

This is on the back of the Centre’s commitment to maintain spending despite a wide revenue shortfall with spending maintained by additional market borrowing.

Over the first four months of FY21, total expenditures reached 34.7 per cent of FY21 budget estimates which suggests a consistent approach towards the disbursement schedule of funds as opposed to front-loading despite the ongoing economic crisis, said Fitch Solutions. (ANI)

India Army Returns 13 Yaks To China In Humane Gesture

In a humane gesture, Indian Army extended its arm of compassion by handing over yaks and calves strayed across the Line of Actual Control to China, said the Eastern Command, Indian Army on Monday.

The eastern command said that the Chinese officials thanked the Indian Army for the “compassionate gesture”.

“In a humane gesture, the Indian Army handed over 13 Yaks and four Calves that strayed across the LAC on August 31 in East Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh to China on 07 Sep 20. Chinese officials present thanked the Indian Army for the compassionate gesture,” the Eastern Command tweeted.

The situation with China has been tense and India is continuously engaging with them at the military and diplomatic level, Army Chief General MM Naravane said on Friday, who visited Ladakh to review the situation.

India recently outflanked China by taking control of strategic height near Pangong lake’s southern bank. It thwarted an attempt by the Chinese army to transgress into Indian areas near the southern bank of Pangong Tso near Chushul in Ladakh.

India and China are engaged in a standoff since April-May over the transgressions by the Chinese Army in multiple areas including the Finger area, Galwan valley, Hot springs and Kongrung Nala. The situation worsened after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent clashes with Chinese troops in Galwan valley in June.

The talks between the two sides have been going on for the last three months including five Lieutenant general-level talks but have failed to yield any results, so far. (ANI)

Kannada Actor Sanjana Galrani Held In Drugs Case

Kannada film actress Sanjana Galrani along with her mother were detained on Tuesday by the Central Crime Branch (CCB), Bengaluru for their alleged involvement in a drug case, the police case.

The mother-daughter duo has been sent to the CCB office situated in Chamrajpet area of the city for further interrogation.

Earlier in the morning, after obtaining a warrant from a court, a search was being conducted at Galrani’s house in Bengaluru, informed Sandeep Patil, Joint CP crime.

Notably, Kannada filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh, a couple of weeks back, had appeared before the CCB and revealed information about the use of drugs in the Kannada film industry. (ANI)

Covid-19 Has Maimed Sports Fraternity

If you thought Covid-19 has played havoc only with daily activities in India since this March, spare a thought for those whose life revolves around sport. The last six months have been one of turmoil for athletes, be it those competing at the international level, national level or local level in various cities, big and small.

The resumption of sporting activity, which has been permitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs since June-July, is only for the elite athletes training for the postponed Tokyo Olympics. Even those in the development group are facing immense problems in training, as several stadia and sports complexes remain shut. In the case of venues which are open, coaching has not been allowed, which is quite baffling.

It is easy to blame the number of rising Covid-19 cases in the country for sporting activities to come to a screeching halt. However, where the government has wanted to help, it has done so with a large heart, with permission being granted for conducting the Indian Premier League in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

To be sure, when one talks of sport in India, one immediately thinks of cricket. Yes, cricket remains the No. 1 sport but to stifle other sport at all levels is something grossly unfair.

On social media, we see Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju singing paeans day in and day out about Fit India Movement and how a fit nation is a healthy nation. All this is nothing more than lip service, as playing sport has become impossible.

A common grouse among sport lovers is, if so much planning can be done by the government for the IPL, why ignore all other sporting activity. Sports minister Kiren Rijiju would do well to answer it.

Lakhs of coaches, assistant coaches, sports venue administrators, ground staff and related personnel have been made to suffer immense financial losses in India today. Not only have they been unable to ply their trade, minus coaching schemes in place, their revenue and reserves have dried up.

LokMarg spoke to some coaches, and the reactions from coaches who have helped produce national champions was one of huge distress. Surinder Khanna, former India wicket-keeper batsman, who lives in South Delhi, and former Test cricketer Madan Lal said that shutting cricket academies so long was painful.

“I have cricket academies, and with no permission to run coaching programmes, the financial impact is huge. How long can one pay coaches and groundsmen? There is no revenue model for sustaining the academies and I do not know how long this will continue. An entire season has been wiped out and so many young cricketers with talent have been hit,” said Khanna. Madan Lal echoed the sentiment: “Parents are reluctant to send children, so cricket academies are in a state of inertia.”

In Delhi alone and the neighbouring NCR region, there are thousands of academies in cricket, football, tennis, badminton, table tennis and other sport. “I have my coaching centres in DDA complexes and we have not been allowed to impart coaching. When every activity has been opened up, it is baffling why academies should not function,” said senior tennis coach Vinod Kumar.

Badminton coach Malvinder Dhillon was more emphatic in his observations. “Summers are the best time for young kids to learn the sport. Covid-19 has done immense damage to the entire season. Still, there is no answer as to why coaching should not be allowed. We are ready to follow the guidelines but there is huge confusion, as a result of which, academies cannot function,” said Dhillon.

The worst hit are the swimmers. While permission has been given for pubs, gyms, malls and Metros to run, swimming pools have been shut for over six months. If the fear is of contamination in the pool, then the authorities need to realise that a higher chlorine content in water does help in providing a safer atmosphere. Abroad, in Europe and the United States of America, swimming pools were never shut even during the peak onset of Coronavirus.

At the school, college and university level, sporting activity has ceased. It has killed an entire year and many budding sportspersons have no idea how they can make up for a lost year. The worst hit will be students who hope to do well in sport and then hope to find small jobs.

This year, admission to universities is expected to take place without any seats being allotted to sports quota aspirants. If at all admissions take place under sports quota, it will be only on the basis of national certificates the students hold and no open trials. The advantage with trials is it gives a chance to weed out dubious certificate holders. However, this time, no thought has been given to this aspect.

With respect to the elite athletes in India, from athletics to boxing, and hockey to weightlifting, national camps have sprung to life slowly but suffered due to increasing cases of COVID-19. From National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala to the elite Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru, camps have not been able to build up intensity due to the pandemic.

Athletes who are supposed to be physically stronger, with better immunity, are struggling to hit peak form. In athletics, the parent federation (AFI) has kept the athletes in Patiala under close watch under a sort of bio bubble. With a bit of luck, once normal train services resume, Patiala could host a few national events.

The same could be tried out in Bengaluru as well as for the men’s and women’s hockey teams training for the Tokyo Olympics. They need match practice and sharpness. Nobody knows how this will take shape, as Covid-19 continues to rage.

All talk of a bio-bubble is good but it does not mean an athlete or coach will never be affected by the virus. It is a matter of chance, despite best efforts, that you could still contract the deadly virus. The bottom line is that preparations must go on, SOPs (standard operating procedures) followed, and hope one day there will eventually be herd immunity in India.

At local level, players without competition and coaches drawing small salaries have virtually quit. Some have turned into vegetable sellers in Delhi and others have chosen to drive e-rickshaws or autos. They are doing this out of compulsion and do not want to be identified out of shame.

What is appalling in a place like Delhi is that the central government and the state government has done nothing for sportsmen and coaches. Each day, more athletes are losing hope as survival has become so tough.

For many, sport was a dream to become a champion like Virat Kohli or PV Sindhu. Sadly, Covid-19 has not only ruined their dreams but even leading a normal life filled with sporting activity has become impossible. It is anybody’s guess how long this trend will continue.

At the school level, almost all kids attend Zoom classes and so on. But the time lost, when they should have been on the playgrounds, can never be recovered. It would not be a bad idea to encourage children to play a sport in their own neighbourhood so that they do not become couch potatoes. This is something which schools need to plan for in Zoom meetings.

Once China’s Ally, Thailand Cancels Def Deals, Projects

Thailand, which once was the strongest ally of China in the South China Sea region, had decided to not only postpone the procurement of two submarines from China but has also put on hold the Chinese proposal for building a canal in the Bay of Bengal and replaced it with its own project.

According to EurAsian Times, under a 2015 deal, Thailand was one of the first countries to buy Chinese naval hardware and finalised its purchase of three submarines in 2017, with the first one expected to be delivered in 2023.

Following a public outrage on the USD 724 million purchase of two submarines from China amid the country’s declining economic situation, Thailand decided to not only postpone the procurement of two submarines from China but has also put on hold the Chinese proposal for building a canal in the Bay of Bengal and replaced it with its own project.

“The navy will negotiate with China to delay for another year,” Anucha Burapachaisri, a government spokesperson, was quoted as saying.

“The Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has given priority to the concern of the public who are worried about the economy,” he added.

Thailand has also taken a step back from the Kra Canal proposal, thus, dampening Beijing’s hopes for a strategic alternative to the Strait of Malacca.

The Kra Canal proposal was to construct a 120-kilometre mega canal cutting through the isthmus of Kra in Thailand.

Citing a report in the Foreign Policy, EurAsian Times reported, “The real concern is that it [Thai Canal] would further undermine the independence of poor southeast Asian countries like Myanmar and Cambodia, which have comparatively weak civil societies that are highly vulnerable to Chinese interference. And it absolutely imperils Thailand.”

Thailand’s step to replace this proposal with its own project will be a relief for all.

With Thailand is going against the interests of China, the latter is now left with almost no allies in the South China Sea region. (ANI)
