Nawaz Owns Up Kargil War, Targets ISI Chief, Gen Bajwa

While addressing the third anti-government rally of Pakistan opposition’s 11 -party alliance, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif said that a few generals, were behind the 1999 Kargil war between India and Pakistan, and not the army.

“The task of initiating the Kargil war, which witnessed the deaths of our brave soldiers, and disgraced Pakistan in front of the world, was not done by the Army, but by a few generals. They threw not only the Army but the country and community in the war in such a place, that nothing could be achieved from it. The moment was painful for me when I learnt that our brave soldiers lamented that when they were sent to the peaks, without food. They did not even have weapons. They sacrificed their lives. But what did the country or community achieve?” said Sharif, who spoke through a video link from London.

He said these generals, who were behind the Kargil war, were also the ones who plotted a coup on October 12, 1999 and declared martial law to hide their actions and escape punishment.”Pervez Musharraf and his companions used the Army for personal gains, and disgraced them,” he added.

Sharif said the PDM has risen against unconstitutional power “that has made Pakistan hollow from inside and out”, reported The Dawn.
“Looking at this enthusiasm, I am sure that no one will be able to violate the respect for the vote now. I saw this enthusiasm in Gujranwala and Karachi, and now I’m seeing it in Quetta,” said the former Prime Minister from London.

He criticised the PTI government’s performance and claimed that he was disqualified as premier over a “flimsy charge”, according to Dawn.

In his speech, Sharif also addressed the arrest of PML-N leader retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, stating that it was “shameful” how police officials barged into the room and violated the privacy of his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her husband.

“On whose order is the privacy of people violated? On whose orders are doors broken down. If even the province’s chief minister doesn’t know, then who is behind it?” he said. Sharif also questioned the role of Inter Service Intelligence chief in political matters of Pakistan.

The former Prime Minister also targeted Army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa over installing a puppet government led by Imran Khan in place of a democratically elected government.

The third anti-government rally of Pakistan opposition’s 11-party alliance, PDM, took place in Quetta, Balochistan on Sunday.

PDM had earlier organised two mammoth rallies in Gujranwala and Karachi as part of countrywide agitations, calling for the resignation of Imran Khan. The police had “arrested” Safdar Awan, from the hotel they were staying in Karachi, hours after the PML-N vice-president had lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan and the PTI government at the second power show of PDM.

“Police broke my room door at the hotel I was staying at in Karachi and arrested Capt. Safdar,” Maryam tweeted early Monday.Several police officers on Tuesday applied for leave in order to “come out of the […] shock” caused by the registration of an FIR and arrest of Safdar, according to Dawn. France Recalls Envoy From Turkey Over ‘Islam Comments’

Paris condemned on Sunday Ankara’s strong-worded reaction to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement against radical Islam and recalled its ambassador from Turkey, according to a press release by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

“In the absence of any official token of condemnation or solidarity from the Turkish authorities after the terrorist attack in Conflans Sainte-Honorine, now come hateful and slanderous propaganda against France in recent days, expressing a will to stir hatred against us and in our midst, as well as direct insults against the President of the French Republic, expressed from the highest level of the Turkish State,” the minister said in a press release.

Such conduct is “unacceptable, especially from an allied nation,” the diplomat went on.

“The French Ambassador to Turkey has been recalled and is returning to France this Sunday 25 October 2020 for consultations,” he added.

On October 21, Macron delivered a speech during a commemoration ceremony for French history teacher Samuel Paty, who was brutally murdered by a radicalized teen. The president urged to “free Islam in France from the foreign influence and strengthen control on the mosques’ funding,” and stressed that France would continue to defend freedom of expression and step up battle against radical Islam.

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the French president disrespected millions of French Muslim citizens and “needed mental treatment.” He added that “manifestation of hostility to Islam means hostility to Turkey.” (ANI/Sputnik)

Chinese Communist Party Doesn’t Speak Truth: Pompeo

In the wake of draconian national security law imposed in Hong Kong, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Sunday slammed China for not keeping its promise to people of Hong Kong that they would get 50 years to live in a different political system.

“The whole world can see that the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t speak the truth, right? It made this promise to the people of Hong Kong that they would have 50 years where they would operate under a system that was different… Instead, they lied,” the State Department tweeted.

Anti-government protests have been rocking Hong Kong since last year. The enactment of draconian national security law in Hong Kong in June to stop people from protesting has intensified the demonstrations.

The national security law imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong criminalises any act of secession (breaking away from China), subversion (undermining the power or authority of the central government), terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, with punishments of up to life in prison. It came into effect from July 1. (ANI)

Can Socialism Find Its Feet?

After President Donald Trump, Republican Party candidate for next month’s presidential election has used the term ‘socialist’ to demonize his vice presidential adversary Kamala Harris, it is time to ponder over what has become, and future role of the socialists, and not just in the United States.

It is not that the rival Democrats are pushing the world’s biggest capitalist powerhouse towards socialism. Even Bernie Sanders was edged out of the race for fear of annoying among others, the business and industry, the multinationals and the arms and energy exporters.

Any debate on democratic socialism or such other ideological issues has been overshadowed by a myriad day-to-day issues about the American people and their place in the world affairs. We will know which way they will vote next month, and hope Vox Populi prevails – peacefully and smoothly.

While this is the state of the world’s ‘greatest’ democracy, the ‘oldest’ set the trend earlier with thrashing the Labour under Jeremy Corbyn received in the last British elections. People rejected Corbyn’s democratic socialist platform.

The two powers have, however, often combined forces to thwart the rise of any socialist leader or party with centrist or left-of-centre leanings in the vast developing world. Many nations remain under their thrall, gaining little, and some that they have intervened in, directly or through proxies, are virtually ungoverned, or are ungovernable. Western democratic yardsticks are applied to judge them. But a demagogue/dictator is okay if he is pliable and buys arms and technology.

To my poser last year about end of the era of liberals, I add socialists, although it’s not that all liberals are socialists and vice versa. And they have themselves to blame. But consider socialist republics that have adopted the capitalist course for economy while retaining political controls. Or, the growing number of ‘nationalist’ leaders who take the democratic course to win elections and then trample upon political opponents, civil society and media. They justify their actions, varyingly, in the name of “popular will,” ‘mandate’, “national security” and call their critics ‘traitors’.

If the ‘greatest’ and the ‘oldest’ are working on their agendas, what about the ‘largest’? This, again, is pertinent to ask. India has baffled the world with its long tradition of socialists of various hues deeply embedded in its body politic. Even before the socialists, the communists have also held sway for a century now, if the 1920 textile mills’ strike is considered their beginning.

Both are on the back-foot today even as a communist-led government runs Kerala state. The Left Front ruled two other states, West Bengal and Tripura and had 60 in the Lok Sabha alone till only a decade back. They are now reduced to three in the Lok Sabha, five in the upper house and roughly a hundred state legislators.

As for socialists, the only party flaunting the ‘Samajwadi’ label has five members in the Lok Sabha and eight in the Rajya Sabha, but is out of power in Uttar Pradesh, its only bastion, and its numbers will dwindle.

The rest, their legislative strength ebbing or non-existent, have got themselves embroiled in caste-driven politics. Whatever work on the ground, as with the communists, is being done by dedicated individuals and bodies that are about the last hope for the poor, but have no role and with their cadres fleeing, no say in the electoral game.

But then, India’s socialists had been a spirited lot, displaying a bohemian streak, living austere lives, wearing home-spun khadi without the laundry-washed starch unlike the Congressmen and interested more in agitating than seeking power.

They had a bright place under the political sun in the early years post-independence. The ‘progressives’ of both the communist and socialist variety held sway over the cultural world, contributing some of the best literature in ink, on political platforms and on celluloid. They influenced the minds of generations of people across South Asia and wherever Hindi/Hindustani/Urdu was understood.  They ignited minds, but as time passed, do not win votes, if that is the yardstick of their success. They failed to offer electoral options or political alternatives in policymaking.

As a political force, the socialists have always been badly organised and remain divided, often fighting each other. The political lore in the last century was that they cannot stay united for more than two years — and cannot stay divided for over three.

They began as part of the Congress during the freedom struggle against the British, but moved away from it under Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia. They became disillusioned, even angry, with Congress’ Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and later Indira Gandhi.  Visceral anti-Congressism became the fulcrum on which much of the socialists’ politics evolved.

Yet, hundreds of them, like George Fernandes, must be credited for fighting the Indira-imposed Emergency (1975-77). Fernandes’ railway strike call shook India. Chandra Shekhar who could have compromised with Indira, refused and went to jail with fellow-socialists like Madhu Limaye and Madhu Dandavate. They are all gone, leaving behind lesser leaders.

When the Janata experiment failed, those of the right-wing orientation consolidated and are now in power. But the socialists got embroiled, happily, in caste-driven politics. And to survive, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party bandwagon – if only to spite the Congress and bypass the communists.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, ageing and ailing and side-lined by son Akhilesh, is one of the last of this lot. Bihar’s long-time chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is imprisoned for graft. His wife and squabbling sons are conducting the current election campaign in Bihar.

Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan routinely switched sides to survive and be a minister in most governments in the last two decades. He died this month, leaving the Bihar fight to son Chirag. The common ally-turned-adversary of them all, Nitish Kumar, is fighting to retain his chief ministership of the state. There was nothing socialist about his opposing Modi and then switching to his side.

Although with socialist roots struck deep during the movement led by Japrakash Narayan (JP), none of them is text-book socialist. They are all dynasts who have done well for themselves. Hindi-speaking India remains poor, backward, and lawless – no matter who rules.

Their gambit of forging vote-winning caste-combinations failed in Uttar Pradesh and is now under test in Bihar in the face of the BJP’s Hindutva onslaught. Their wooing other backward castes (OBCs) has also been neutralised. Their Muslim support base also stands impaired, despite vigilante-led violence and government apathy.

Sharad Yadav who sought to strike a different course is ill. He had scored a shock Congress defeat way back in 1974 and shot to national fame. Today, Subhasini, his daughter and political heir, is contesting on the Congress nomination. The circle is complete for at least this socialist.

Can a Biden-Harris victory in the US or a Nitish/BJP defeat in Bihar bring the socialists back on the track? Perish the thought.

Nitish Will Go To Jail If LJP Comes To Power: Chirag

Chirag Paswan, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader, claimed at a rally on Sunday that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would be behind bars if his party is voted to power.

“Nitish Kumar and his officers will be behind bars if we come to power,” Paswan said.

Addressing a rally in Dumraon, Buxar in the run-up to polling in Bihar, Paswan raised several questions before the present state government.

“Alcohol ban in Bihar has failed. Illicit liquor is widely being sold and Nitish Kumar is receiving kickbacks,” Paswan said.

The LJP leader sought votes from BJP supporters for a “Nitish-free government”.

“I request you to please vote for LJP candidates to implement #Bihar1stBihari1st. Everywhere else vote for the BJP. The coming government will be a #Nitish-free government,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Paswan, chief of the LJP–a former ally of the NDA–has been vocal in his criticism of Kumar, who is the chief ministerial candidate of the NDA. He has, however, pledged support to the Prime Minister, calling himself “Modi’s Hanuman”

Bihar Assembly elections will be held in three phases on October 28, November 3, and November 7. The result will be declared on November 10. (ANI)

Lalu Performed Tantrik Rituals To Kill Me: Sushil Modi

Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections 2020, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi has claimed that Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav had performed tantric rituals to kill him three years ago.

Taking to Twitter, Sushil Modi made a number of serious allegations about Lalu Yadav’s lifestyle and his belief in black magic.

“Lalu Prasad is so superstitious that he not only stopped wearing a white kurta at the behest of the tantrik, but also made Tantrik Shankar Charan Tripathi the national spokesperson of the party,” Sushil Modi tweeted.

“The same tantric had performed tantric puja for Lalu Prasad at Vindhyachal Dham (Mirzapur). They have also done tantric rituals to kill me three years ago,” he further claimed.

He continued saying that Lalu Prasad Yadav does not trust the public, so he kept performing rituals like black magic, animal sacrifice and praying of spirits. Despite this, he neither escaped from jail nor could save his power. He can still spend 14 years in jail, he added.

Sushil Modi has also claimed that Yadav is about to sacrifice three goats on the day of Navami, before the Bihar Assembly elections, in the Kaili bungalow of Ranchi, flouting the jail manual.

“On May 26, 2014, when BJP’s top leader Narendra Damodar Das Modi took oath as Prime Minister, Lalu Prasad called the oath-taking event inauspicious and said that the government would not run for five years,” Sushil Modi tweeted.

“Prime Minister Modi not only changed the landscape of Indian politics, but ran a corruption-free government, gave Jan Dhan accounts to the people, gave free gas connections to nine crore poor and gave a befitting reply to Pakistan by conducting surgical strike,” he added.

“In 2005, when the public rejected Lalu-Rabri’s misrule, Lalu Prasad had spent a month and a half to leave the Chief Minister’s residence and later said that he has put such a thing (related to black magic) in the wall of residence that now no one will be able to stand there,” Sushil Modi tweeted.

Staying in the same residence, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been serving Bihar for 15 years and the state is moving towards development, he added.

“When Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reached Taregana to see a full solar eclipse in 2009, and he ate biscuits during the time of the eclipse, superstitious Lalu Prasad said that it would cause famine. However, agricultural yields rose during NDA rule in Bihar,” Sushil Modi tweeted.

Slamming Congress Government Sushil Modi also tweeted, “The body of a migrant Bihari girl, a victim of rape has been found in Hoshiarpur in Congress-ruled Punjab. Will Rahul Gandhi go there? RJD has given ticket to the wives of two rapists in Bihar assembly elections.”

While the body was being brought to Tanda Hospital, the Punjab Police was trying to save the culprit from the rage of the public. Why is Rahul Gandhi silent, asked Sushil Modi.

“Why has Rahul Gandhi not yet reached Hoshiarpur where a six-year-old Bihari girl was burnt alive after cruelty? RJD’s silence is understandable as they have given ticket to the wives of two rapists in Bihar. RJD and Congress is seen standing with the rapists today,” he added.

Sushil Modi’s attack RJD supremo has come just four days ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. (ANI)

Air Quality Turns ‘Severe’ In Parts Of Delhi

The air in the national capital on Sunday further deteriorated with the rise of pollutants in the atmosphere. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 422 in Bawana, 423 in Mundka and 416 in Jahangirpuri, all three in ‘severe’ category as per the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) data.

The national capital witnessed a thin layer of smog this morning.

According to experts, the severe category affects the health of people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.

An AQI between 0-50 is marked good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor and 401-500 is considered severe.

Amid the rise in pollution levels, people are having problems with breathing and some children have started facing throat problems due to contaminated air.

Recently, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) submitted before the Delhi High Court that it has issued directions to implementing agencies including State Pollution Control Boards, construction agencies, municipal bodies, traffic police and transport department of Delhi and NCR for strict action against air polluting activities. China Is No. 1 Security Threat To US: Nikki Haley

China is the United States’ “absolute number one” national security threat, said Indian-American Republican politician Nikki Haley on Saturday (local time), adding that US President Donald Trump has made sure Beijing does not steal American intellectual property.

Speaking during a fireside chat event organised by the Indian Voices for Trump in the battleground state of Philadelphia, Haley, former US Ambassador to the UN, said President Trump has “put China on notice”.

“China is our absolute number one threat right now, a huge national security threat. With the trade deal that the President did, not only did he get a better trade deal for us, he put China on notice with intellectual property,” the 48-year-old said.

“He has made sure that they know that they can not turn around and steal the intellectual property. They cannot go and spy on our universities, and that we are going to hold them accountable as we go forward,” she added.

The two-term governor of South Carolina, Haley was the first Cabinet-ranking Indian-American in any presidential administration. She is now campaigning for Trump ahead of the US election.

The US and China relations have swiftly deteriorated in the past few months over a range of issues including COVID-19 origin, Indo Pacific, Hong Kong and trade disagreements.

During the event, Haley also hit out at Democratic Presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden and accused former US President Barack Obama’s administration of sponsoring terrorism.

“The last administration, under Biden, Obama gave literally planes full of cash to the largest sponsor of terror. And they took that cash and funnelled it and spread terrorism throughout Yemen, and Lebanon, and Syria, and Iraq. And all these places. The President pulled out of the Iran deal so they will have the money to spend,” she said.

The presential elections in the US will be held on Tuesday, November 3. (ANI)
