Melania Condemns Capitol Riots But Mum On Trump Role

US First Lady Melania Trump has broken her silence on the attack on the Capitol and issued a statement condemning the violent riots at the Capitol on Wednesday, yet remained mum on the role of her husband President Donald Trump in inciting a mob of his supporters.

The first lady also said the attack on Capitol had led to “salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks and false misleading accusations” about her.

In a statement published on the White House website titled “Our Path Forward” Melania Trump said “It has been inspiring to witness firsthand what the people of our great nation will do for one another, especially when we are at our most vulnerable.

“… Most recently, my heart goes out to: air force veteran Ashli Babbit, Benjamin Philips, Kevin Greeson, Rosanne Boyland, and Capitol police officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Liebengood. I pray for their families comfort and strength during this difficult time” she wrote.

The first lady said she is “disappointed and disheartened with what happened last week.

Following the violence at the Capitol, two of the first lady’s top aides, chief of staff Stephanie Grisham, who also served as Trump’s closest adviser, speechwriter and spokesperson, and Anna Cristina “Rickie” Niceta, White House social secretary, submitted their resignations effective immediately in the wake of the violence.

CNN had reported that during the breach at the capitol, Melania was allegedly overseeing a photoshoot. “Photos were being taken of rugs and other items in the Executive Residence and the East Wing,” a person familiar with the day’s activities with the first lady told CNN.

In her statement on the White House website, Melania said: “I find it shameful that surrounding these tragic events there has been salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks and false misleading accusations on me – from people who are looking to be relevant and have an agenda.

“This time is solely about healing our country and its citizens. It should not be used for personal gain.”

“Our Nation must heal in a civil manner. Make no mistake about it, I absolutely condemn the violence that has occurred on our Nation’s Capitol. Violence is never acceptable,” she said.

Melania further asked people to stop the violence, and never make assumptions based on the colour of a person’s skin or use differing political ideologies as a basis for aggression and viciousness.

“It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your First Lady. I want to thank the millions of Americans who supported my husband and me over the past 4 years and shown the incredible impact of the American spirit. I am grateful to you all for letting me serve you on platforms which are dear to me,” she added.

Chaotic and violent scenes erupted at the Capitol on Wednesday as supporters of Trump stormed the building to protest the Electoral College vote, forcing a lockdown and confrontations with the police. Five people died in the ensuing scuffle.

Wednesday’s violence came hours after Trump encouraged his supporters to fight against the election results as Congress was certifying Biden’s victory in the November vote.

On Monday, the US House of Representatives have introduced a resolution to impeach Trump for a second time, on charges on ‘incitement of insurrection’ during the riots. (ANI)

Is End Of Qatar Blockade End Of Saudi Era?

On January 5, during a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced that they were ending the air, land and sea boycott of the state of Qatar. The summit issued a solidarity statement in which all sides vowed not to interfere in each other’s affairs while retaining the freedom to follow their own foreign policy.

This was presented to the world as some sort of victory for the GCC, which had been practically paralysed because of the rift, and for Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS), but in reality, it was a big victory for the tiny state of Qatar and one more failure of the misguided policies of MBS.

It should be mentioned that the declaration of conflict with Qatar in June 2017 was one of the first actions of Mohammed Bin Salman, who became the Saudi Crown Prince in the same month. The three countries together with Egypt accused Qatar of supporting Islamist groups in the region and of having close ties with Iran.

Moreover, they presented a list of 13 demands for the lifting of sanctions, which included limiting relations with Iran, ending support for the Muslim Brotherhood and closing down Al Jazeera, which exposed the corruption prevailing in Arab states. Qatar flatly refused to comply with these demands.

Throughout this period, the tiny but oil-rich Qatar stood its ground and managed to overcome the difficulties it was facing, used the Iranian airspace for the flights of its airline and forged closer relations with Turkey and Iran, with which it shares a giant gas field. It also built factories to manufacture consumer goods and increased its national investment fund with more than USD 320 billion.

It is reported that the only concession Qatar made for the lifting of sanctions was to withdraw claims for USD 5 billion in compensation for damages caused due to the boycott. For its part, Saudi Arabia withdrew its demand to close Al Jazeera.

In the past decades Saudi Arabia, as home to Islam’s holiest sites and as a country having the second-largest oil reserves in the world, had a lot of religious and economic power among the Arab and the Islamic countries. In 1978 in the wake of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan the following year, the Saudi regime became a most valuable ally of the United States.

The end of this state of affairs started with the death of King Abdullah and the leadership of King Salman and his son Mohammed, who became Defence Minister and afterwards Crown Prince. Soon MBS embarked on an anti-corruption campaign and arrested dozens of rich Saudis, including princes and government officials, forcing them to pay billions of dollars into government coffers. He tried to turn Qatar into a vassal state and make the Gulf Cooperation Council impose sanctions on Qatar. Only UAE, Bahrain and Egypt- which is not a GCC state- followed him and boycotted Qatar.

Mohammed bin Salmanguided the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen against the Houthi rebels, who in 2015 had seized Sana’a and ousted the Saudi-backed Hadi government. Saudi airstrikes during the intervention have resulted in thousands of civilians killed or injured, prompting accusations of war crimes in the intervention. Despite hundreds of billions of Saudi arms purchases, the five-year war continues with no one emerging victorious, while one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world has been created there. Meanwhile, Yemeni Youthis are escalating their missile attacks on Saudi Arabia.

In October 2018, a Saudi journalist and a critic of the crown prince named Jamal Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish officials say Khashoggi was first tortured and then murdered by a 15-man Saudi team. Prince Mohammed has denied any involvement in the murder and blamed the assassination on rogue operators. However, Western countries are not convinced and believe this couldn’t have happened without the knowledge or approval of the prince. US President Donald Trump described the Saudi response to the killing as “one of the worst in the history of cover-ups.

Although MBS appeared prepared to take some liberalisation measures, e.g. significantly restricting the powers of the religious police, allowing Saudi women to open their own business without a male’s permission, opening the first public cinema in ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia and lifting the ban on women driving, he has consistently suppressed human rights activists, some of whom were murdered by death squads.

As Marwan Bishara, a senior political analyst at Al Jazeera points out: “The initial optimism and excitement about greater social mobility and empowerment of women soon gave way to pessimism and despair, as Saudi economic reform and multibillion-dollar megaprojects stalled, while youth unemployment remains at a high 29 per cent. The Saudi kingdom is in disarray, its regime utterly disoriented and disrespected throughout the region and beyond.”

Omer Ozkizilcik, an analyst for the SETA Foundation, says: “A withdrawing Saudi Arabia, an increasingly influential UAE that focused on Turkey and Qatar, and the continuing Russian-Iranian cooperation made Saudi Arabia the primary loser of the geopolitical chess game in the Middle East. From Syria to Yemen, Saudi Arabia’s role was relegated to a footnote.”

Politicians Mustn’t Jump Queue For Vaccine: Modi

Ahead of the COVID vaccination campaign set to begin from 16th January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a meeting with state Chief Ministers on Monday emphasised that politicians should not jump the queue to take the vaccine rather they should wait for their turn.

“In the meeting with Chief Ministers held on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on ensuring that politicians don’t jump the queue and take the vaccine when their turn comes,” said sources.

The Prime Minister chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers and Administrators of all States and Union Territories to review the status and preparedness for COVID-19 vaccination on 11th January 2021, via video conferencing.

Prime Minister said that the country is in a decisive phase of this fight, with the start of the world’s biggest vaccination campaign from 16th January. He underlined that it’s a matter of pride that both the vaccines for which Emergency Use Authorization has been given are made in India. He highlighted that both the approved vaccines are highly cost-effective in comparison to other vaccines from across the world, adding that India would have faced great difficulty if it would have had to depend on foreign vaccines.

Prime Minister noted that India’s vast experience with vaccination will prove handy in this endeavour.

“The priority of vaccination has been decided as per the advice of the experts and scientific community after consultation with the States. Health workers, from both government and private sector, will be the first ones to receive the vaccine. Along with them, Safai Karmacharis, other Front Line Workers, police and paramilitary, Home Guards, Disaster Management Volunteers and other jawans in Civil Defence, and Revenue Officials associated with containment and surveillance, will also receive the vaccine in the first stage,” said PM Modi.

The total number of such personnel is around 3 crore. Prime Minister announced that State governments will not have to bear any cost towards vaccinating these 3 crore people in the first stage. Centre will bear this cost, he added.

In the second stage, those above 50 years of age, and those below 50 years of age with comorbidities or with a high risk of infection, will be vaccinated. Preparation for infrastructure and logistics has been done with all States and UTs, the Prime Minister said, adding that dry runs for vaccination have also been done across the country. He said that our new preparations and SOPs for COVID have to be linked up with our old experiences of running universal immunization programmes and conducting elections throughout the country. He noted that the booth level strategy used for elections needs to be used here as well.

Prime Minister remarked that the most important factor in this vaccination drive is the identification and monitoring of those who need to be vaccinated. For this, Co-Win digital platform has been created. With the help of Aadhaar, beneficiaries will be identified as well as timely second dosage will be ensured. Prime Minister underlined the significance of ensuring that real-time data related to vaccination gets uploaded on Co-Win.

After a person receives the first dose of vaccination, Co-Win will immediately generate a digital vaccination certificate. This certificate will also act as a reminder for the second dose, after which, a final certificate will be given.

Prime Minister said that the vaccination drive in India is also significant since several other countries are going to follow us. He said that vaccination for COVID-19 has been going on in about 50 countries for the past 3-4 weeks, and till now, only about 2.5 crore people have received the vaccination. India aims to achieve vaccination for 30 crore people in the next few months, he said. (ANI)

Sikh Museum Set Up At Singhu Border To Inspire Youth

By Sahil Pandey

Mohali-based artist Parvinder Singh has set up a Sikh museum at Singhu Border in order to inspire the protesting farmers and youth at the site.

“This is a museum based in Mohali. By profession, I am a scooter mechanic and have been working for the past 20 years. In our religion, we have many martyrs who sacrificed their lives for us and the present generation doesn’t know about the Sikh history. I want to make a museum which teaches them about the past,” Parvinder Singh told ANI.

Two trolleys displayed at Singhu border display four sahibzaade’s martyrdom and Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice.

“I have shown three Sikhs martyred by Aurangzeb. One was Matidas who was forced to convert but after his refusal, he was killed. His brother Dayalaji was thrown in boiling hot water and another brother of his, Satidas was set on fire,” Singh added.

Singh aspires to make a wax museum like Madame Tussaud’s of London based on those who contributed to build the country.

“If Sangat (Sikh congregation) supports us then we will make wax museum just like Madame Tussaud of London. We will make models of all those who have done good for the country and hope to expand it. Although we have less budget right now but we expect people’s support in future,” Singh said.

Talking about what inspired him to bring the museum to Singhu border, the artist said, “I read daily about the protest and then I decided to bring these models to Delhi and I hope to get the support of the Sangat.”

The Sikh museum became a star attraction as many people saw these decorated trolleys as a way to showcase the past history of the religion and also it serves to inspire the youth.

A protesting farmer from Amritsar, Amrik Singh said, “I really feel good after seeing these models and it refreshes the old history of our culture. The present generation will see this and get inspired.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Darshan Singh from Punjab’s Sangrur who said, “We have been hearing about the culture and Sikh history since childhood. These models will tell people about the culture to those who are not aware of it as our forefathers have gone through a lot for us.”

He said quick decisions were taken with full sensitivity and, as a result, COVID-19 has not spread in India on the scale on which it spread in some other parts of the world.

China Moves Back 10,000 Troops From Depth Areas Near LAC

By Ajit K Dubey

In a significant development, the Chinese Army has moved back around 10,000 troops from the depth areas near the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh.

However, the deployment in the frontline areas has remained the same and the troops from both sides remain in an eyeball to eyeball situation at several locations in that sector.

Government sources told ANI that the Chinese Army has moved back around 10,000 troops from its traditional training areas opposite Eastern Ladakh sector and areas near it.

The Chinese traditional training areas are around 150 kilometres and beyond the Indian side of LAC. The Chinese had maintained these troops there since April-May timeframe last year.

The heavy weaponry brought in by the Chinese Army in the deployment close to Indian border has also remained in the area, the sources said.

Sources said the reason for moving troops away from the depth areas may be due to the extreme winters and they may be finding it difficult to deploy a large number of troops in that extremely cold region.

It is difficult to say whether they will bring back the troops once there is a rise in temperature after February-March this year, the sources said.

Since April-May timeframe in 2020, the Chinese army had deployed close to 50,000 troops opposite Indian boundary there in Eastern Ladakh sector in aggressive posturing.

The Indian side had responded rapidly and deployed almost the same number of troops there to prevent any further misadventure by the People’s Liberation Army. The Chinese started transgressing into Indian areas in the garb of an annual training exercise in the area opposite India after which multiple clashes took place between the two forces.

Indian Army has been keeping a track of their activities closely and preempted them in southern Pangong lake area by capturing the Rezang La and Rechen La strategic heights there along with some on the northern bank too. (ANI)

Order On Pleas Challenging Farm Laws On Tuesday: SC

The Supreme Court will pass orders on Tuesday on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of farm laws.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde, is hearing a batch of petitions, including those filed by DMK MP Tiruchi Siva, RJD MP Manoj K Jha, regarding the constitutional validity of three farm laws, passed by the Central government along with the plea to disperse protesting farmers.

The bench had said that the government should have passed these laws after discussing with all stakeholders.

“We do not think the Centre is handling this issue correctly. We have to take some action today. This is a very serious matter. We are proposing and facilitating to try to form a committee and we are also thinking that we will hold the implementation of the laws till further orders,” the CJI suggested to one of the petitioners.

Expressing his displeasure over the way the case is being handled, CJI Bobde said: “You have made a law without enough consultation resulting in a strike.”

“We are suggesting staying the implementation of farm laws only to facilitate the talks before the Committee,” the CJI said.

“We don’t want to say anything, the protests can go on, but who is going to take the responsibility?” he asked.

The CJI asserted, “If the Centre does not want to stay the implementation of farm laws, we will put a stay on it… The Union of India must take responsibility for all this. You (Centre) are bringing the laws and you can do it in a better manner.”

“We will stay the implementation of laws. You can carry on the protest. But the question is whether the protest should be held at the same site. Some people have committed suicide, old people and women are a part of the agitation. What is happening?” said the CJI.

He added that not a single plea has been filed that said the farm laws are good.

“We don’t know what negotiations are going on? Can the farm laws be put on hold for some time? the CJI asked.

“Each one of us will be responsible if something goes wrong. We don’t want anybody’s blood on our hands,” he said.

Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for one of the farmers’ unions said: “How can such important laws be passed through a voice vote in Parliament? If the government is serious, then the government can hold a joint session of Parliament and why the government is shying away from it.”

The farmers should be allowed to go to the Ramlila Maidan. “We are not interested in any violence,” he added.

“If the government is serious, then the government can hold a joint session of Parliament and why the government is shying away from it,” Dave said and questioned the way the government had passed the law.

Attorney General KK Venugopal said there are Supreme Court precedents saying that the Courts cannot stay legislation. “The Court cannot stay legislation unless it finds that the law is passed without legislative competence and the law violates fundamental rights,” he asserted.

“What happened with Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar (rally) cannot happen? On January 26, farmers with their tractors are planning to march down to Rajpath to destroy a day of national importance,” Venugopal said.

Senior lawyer, Harish Salve (representing one of the petitioners) stated that there are few elements, which should be weeded out from the protest. Salve mentioned about a Vancouver-based organisation collecting money under the banner ‘Justice for Sikhs’.

Farmers have been protesting at different borders of the national capital since November 26, 2020, against the three newly enacted farm laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
