Bangladesh Groups Tell Pak To Close Kashmir Terror Trap

Bangladesh has slammed Pakistan High Commission for celebrating ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ in Dhaka and demanded Islamabad to stop sending terrorists to Kashmir.

Bangladesh Daughters’ Foundation, Manusher Majhe Manusher Kajey and Yes Bangladesh condemned Pakistan for committing 1971 mass genocide in Bangladesh and demanded Islamabad to stop giving shelter to the murderers of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

They also gave slogans such as — “Pakistan, We want you to put infamous terrorists behind bars” and “Stop sending terrorists to Kashmir”.

“While Pakistan celebrates ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’, it is necessary to ask Islamabad about the violation of human rights in Balochistan,” said the organisations.

Pakistan observes Kashmir Solidarity Day every year as a political stunt for renewing the country’s pledge of continuing support to the Kashmiris.

Despite Pakistan’s recent attempts to extend friendship to Bangladesh, Dhaka has always maintained that the country has not forgotten Pakistan’s gruesome killing of some 30 lakh Bangladeshis and rape of hundreds of thousands of women during the Liberation War in 1971.

“Pakistan has not yet apologised for the genocide it committed during the 1971 Liberation War. We want to maintain a friendship with everyone but how is that possible if they could not make an apology?” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said in an interview last year. (ANI)

China Cautious To Save Its Investment In Myanmar: Report

After a military coup in Myanmar on February 1, China is again poised to be the “friend in need” it has always been in times of crisis for the country, reported Asia Times.

China has made huge investments in Myanmar. In order to save its investments, China took the stand of ‘understanding the coup’ in Myanmar while globally the act was derided and condemned.

Among the major projects that were on the table before the coup are a new railroad linking the Chinese border town of Ruili with Mandalay in Myanmar, and a China-financed deep-sea port at Kyaukpyu on the Bay of Bengal, which already also serves as a terminus for oil and gas pipelines that reach across Myanmar and flow into China’s southern Yunnan province, reported Asia Times.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, at a news briefing on February 1 hours after Myanmar’s elected government members were detained, said Beijing “noted what has happened in Myanmar and are in the process of further understanding the situation.”

He then went on to say that “all sides in Myanmar” should “appropriately handle their differences under the constitution and legal framework” in order for “political and social stability to be maintained.”

Meanwhile, the US President Joe Biden’s administration quickly threatened to impose new punitive sanctions on Myanmar’s coup-makers.

Bertil Lintner, writing in an opinion piece in Asia Times viewed the Chinese move as a continuation of their support to the Myanmar military. China has already come to the defense of Myanmar’s coup-makers and will likely see its interests grow under the new era of military rule, he wrote.

China has been utilising the situation with utmost care to save its investments in Myanmar. Earlier also, China has helped Myanmar in its previous outrages, including the Rohingya refugee crisis that was condemned by the West. China had helped Myanmar after the Rohingya refugee crisis in 2016-2017, reported Asia Times.

At that time, Aung San Suu Kyi’s now-ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) was in power. Beijing had cozied up to her and her party before the coup because its policymakers and business groups found it easier to deal with them than the staunchly nationalistic military, known as the Tatmadaw, reported Asia Times.

Myanmar, under Suu Kyi, joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) when Suu Kyi attended a forum for International Cooperation in Beijing in May 2017. The two countries then signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly build the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) in 2018, aiming to further enhance bilateral cooperation within the BRI’s framework, reported Asia Times.

Lintner is of the view that China will not likely criticize Myanmar’s new military government, even if its new direction and policies dent somewhat its interests and ongoing projects in the country.

Even though Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-in-chief of Myanmar’s defense forces and now national leader under the emergency rule is wary of Chinese hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region, recognizes that China is the only top foreign power he can rely on after his coup, Myanmar insiders say, reported Asia Times.

As per Lintner, Beijing will thus likely not risk even the mildest hiccup in its relations with strategically important Myanmar, the only neighbour that via the CMEC provides it with ready access to the Indian Ocean for trade and an alternative avenue for its fuel shipments from the Middle East that travel mainly through the strategically fraught Malacca Strait.

Moreover, Aung Hlaing latest move to appoint new Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin is a clear indication that he wants to move closer to China, said Lintner. Wunna Maung Lwin served as foreign minister from 2011 to 2016 under then-president Thein Sein.

He visited China several times over that period and was the first to vouch for Chinese “economic corridors” to be built through Myanmar. During a visit in August 2015 — before the NLD won its first election victory in November of that year — he was quoted in a Chinese Foreign Ministry bulletin saying that “Myanmar thanks China” for its humanitarian support and “Myanmar cherishes China as a friend in need,” reported Asia Times.

Indeed, he is known for his anti-Western and pro-Chinese stance. At one point he even told Thein Sein not to meet then-US president Barack Obama, insiders say, reported Asia Times.

Now Wunna Maung Lwin is back and his cordial relations with Chinese officials will likely prove pivotal as the West contemplates renewed sanctions and other punitive measures against the coup-makers. Hence, China is poised to benefit from the Myanmar military coup. (ANI)

Keep Government School Toilets Clean & Functional

‘Govt Gives Fund For Toilets, Overlooks Maintenance’

Archana K R, a menstrual hygiene and sanitation activist, has been campaigning for increased state funding to keep government school toilets clean and functional

I wear many hats: a ninja representative of Reap Benefit Solve; a change-maker with Change.org Foundation; a network fellow at Youth Ki Awaaz Action and; the founder of Stand4SHE. I am active menstrual hygiene and sanitation campaigner too.

The Union Budget this year has sanctioned ₹1,41,678 crore for Swachh Bharat mission 2.0. It will be great if the authorities concerned also use the money on maintenance of toilets instead of building new structures. Maintenance of school toilets, especially in rural areas, is key to girl child education.

While working with government school students across Karnataka, I found that parents stop sending their daughters to school once they reach puberty, because of inadequate toilet facilities in schools.

Archana KR with girl students inspecting a facility in their school.

As a woman who grew up in Sakleshpur, a town in Hassan district, I have first-hand experience of the appalling state of this basic facility. From Grade 1 to 10th I studied in a Government school. This elementary school had no washrooms. While I enjoyed my school activities, I dreaded having to answer the call of nature in the open. I would even drink less water. I did not see a clean toilet till the age of 17.

Unfortunately, not much has changed over the years. For my work related to ‘active citizenship’, I used to visit schools and hold sessions for Grade 8 and 9 students. During once such session at a government school, I asked my students to guide me to the washroom. The girls reluctantly took me to the teacher’s washroom, supposedly better than the ones meant for students. I was appalled at the condition. The students’ one was worse, with broken door, choked commode and used sanitary pads piled in a corner.

Constructing a toilet building is important, but its maintenance is even more important as also the behavioural change of the user. I started working with the students of that school on behavioural change and after six months of follow-up, these students took responsibility of their school washrooms. They understood their sanitation rights and they built their DIY solutions. Today, this school is one of the model schools.

Encouraged, I started working towards this end with other schools. I found the main issue is that Government schools don’t have enough funds for maintaining toilet hygiene. They get ₹5,000-25000 maintenance funds per year according to the strength of their students. However, this amount includes school maintenance, like electricity, water supply, teaching aids, wall paint and desk repair among others. Toilet maintenance, obviously, is low on priority.

Archana interacting with schoolgirls

I started an online campaign asking the Karnataka government to increase the funding government schools so that they can regularly clean and maintain toilets, linking the issue to continued girl child education.

It requires about ₹15,000 per month for a school to provide clean and running water and menstrual hygiene kits to girls. Around 60 percent girls drop out from schools in rural area due to lack of toilets. My aim is to bring these girl students back to the government school.

In my online efforts, I began tagging state education minister S Suresh Kumar on social media and once he responded as well. But soon enough, his office even stopped taking my calls. But I will give not up. As a ‘sanitation ninja’, I owe it to all the kids I have taught.

I started my petition on this working with 300 government schools in Karnataka, training students on behavioural change and management on maintenance issue. I am also running an online campaign with Change.org/SwachhHighwayToilets supported by almost 1,30,000 people. The campaign demands from the authorities to ensure that Swachh Bharat toilets for women are functional, safe, and clean on NH-75 in Karnataka.

If we make ourselves heard in time, we have a golden chance of ensuring funding to keep toilets clean all year round. No child will ever have to squat in the open again.

Why Get Rattled By Greta, Rihanna: Cong Asks Centre

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday asked why we are getting so much rattled over the attack on the international celebrities who tweeted in support of farmers.

“When singer Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg sought to express solidarity with the Indian farmers, why are we getting so much rattled?” he asked.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said no questions were asked when some “nationalists” pleaded in America ‘Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar’ or when India protested during the ‘Black Lives Matter’ against the brutality on George Floyd.

“Some of our nationalists pleaded in America that “Aab ki bar, Trump ki sarkar”, what did it mean? When we protested in chorus against the brutality on George Floyd, nobody has questioned!!!” the Congress leader said in a series of tweets.

“We are living in a global village. Why should we be afraid of any criticism whatsoever, just have an introspection. You have all been grown up by the food produced by our food givers. Better you should have expressed solidarity with those Indian farmers also,” he added.

International pop star Rihanna teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg and others extended their support to farmers protesting on the borders of India’s capital against the three agriculture laws introduced by the Central government last year and asked why people were not talking about it.

On Wednesday, the MEA issued a statement to counter the tweets by international celebrities including singer Rihanna, climate activist Greta Thunberg and others saying that the laws were passed after a full debate and discussion.

“The Parliament of India, after a full debate and discussion, passed reformist legislation relating to the agricultural sector. These reforms give expanded market access and provided greater flexibility to farmers. They also pave the way for economically and ecologically sustainable farming,” the MEA said.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. Pakistan Is Being Destroyed Systematically: SC Justice

Emphasising that Pakistan is being destroyed in a systematic manner, the country’s Supreme Court Justice Qazi Feez Isa lashed out at the government over the state of democracy, media freedom and governance.

During the hearing on a matter related to local government election, the Supreme Court said Punjab province’s government had “killed” democracy by dissolving the local government before the expiry of its term, Geo News reported.

In 2019, the Punjab province government dissolved the local bodies system.

Justice Isa inquired why that was done. “Local governments (LG) were dissolved in the martial law era, but it is unheard of in a democracy,” the judge said.

He asked if Punjab was in the mood to abolish the LG system altogether. To this, the Punjab additional advocate-general said a new law had been made for local governments in the province.

By dissolving the local government, the Punjab government has clearly violated the Constitution, Justice Isa said, adding that, like this, Punjab can continue dissolving local governments till a government of its choice comes along.

If democracy is lost, half the country will be gone, he warned. “ECP (Election Commission of Pakistan) says there will be huge cost of Rs 18 billion on local bodies elections,” Justice Isa remarked. “Yet huge development funds are being released for politicians.”

The senior judge also made strong statements over the state of media freedom in Pakistan.

He said he won’t shy away from saying that the media is not free and that it is being controlled, with real journalists being thrown out of the country.

Pakistan, he said, is being destroyed in a systematic manner. He said when media is destroyed, a country is destroyed.

“Tell me. Is media free in Pakistan?” Justice Isa asked Attorney-General Khalid Javed Khan. (ANI)

Oppn Leaders Seek Separate Debate In LS On Farm Laws

With the Lok Sabha witnessing repeated adjournments for the past two days, leaders of different opposition parties met Lok Sabha Speaker and insisted on their demand for a separate discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s Address and the new farm laws.

“We talked to the speaker for one hour. We want a separate discussion on farmers and do not want the matter of farm laws to be clubbed with the Motion of thanks to the President’s Address. Speaker has no problem with it. The ruling party has not agreed to it,” TMC leader Saugata Roy told ANI.

NCP leader Supriya Sule said MPs from 10 parties visited Ghazipur border today.

“The things we saw there were worrying. We were there just to meet farmers but we were not allowed. The atmosphere there is not in the interest of the nation. It will be our effort to see that a solution comes out. A solution needs to be brought out with discussions,” she said.

Congress leaders said the government should agree to their demand for a separate discussion. Farmers are protesting on different borders of Delhi against new farm laws. (ANI)
