News Analysis: Isolated Turkey Seeks Truce With Egypt

By John Solomou

Facing increasing international isolation, while pressure is increasing on Ankara with the recent US sanctions, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday expressed his intention “to strengthen relations with Egypt, if current diplomatic contact between the two countries leads to positive results.”

For his part, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in an interview with Anadolu Agency said: “We have contacts both at the level of intelligence and foreign ministries with Egypt. Diplomatic level contacts have started”. He hastened to add that “lack of trust is normal” and added that neither side put forward preconditions. “Negotiations take place and continue under a certain strategy, a road map.”

In recent years, relations between Cairo and Ankara fluctuated from very friendly to extremely tense. They fractured in 2013 when Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, who was warmly supported by Erdogan, was ousted in a coup by current president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. El-Sisi immediately started a crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood, something which angered the Islamist President of Turkey. The two Presidents on many occasions traded barbs and both countries withdrew their ambassadors.

Erdogan, who espouses an expansionist pan-Islamist ideology, saw the overthrow of Morsi as a serious blow and openly expressed support for the Muslim Brotherhood, prompting an Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman to say that Ankara attempts to “influence public opinion” and is supporting “meetings of organizations that seek to create instability in Egypt.”

Both Turkey and Egypt are politically and culturally influential players in the Middle East but they follow opposite foreign policies. In fact, they formed or joined two opposing alliance networks.

As Dr Mawa Maziad, of the Moshe Dayan Centre for Middle East Studies, points out: “A regional fault line of power competition in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and North Africa has emerged. Two alliance networks accentuated this rivalry: first, the Turkey-Qatar pan-Islamist alliance; and second, the Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, statist militarized-secularizing pact (also known as the Arab Quartet). The Arab Quartet increasingly converged on shared interests with Israel, as the Abraham Accords came to prove. The Arab Quartet and Israel also share mutual interests with Greece, Cyprus, and France, as opposed to those of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean region.”

In the past few years, Turkey raised tension in the Eastern Mediterranean when it sent its ships to carry out hydrocarbon explorations in the Cyprus EEZ and in the Aegean Sea. Furthermore, it reached an agreement with the Government of National Accord of Libya for the demarcation of the EEZ between Turkey and Libya, ignoring the relevant rights of Cyprus and Greece under international law.

In their attempt to counter Turkey’s encroachments, Egypt and Greece also signed an agreement defining their maritime borders and exclusive economic zones–cancelling Turkey’s attempt to set a similar deal with Libya earlier in 2020. This added friction between Ankara and Cairo.

As Egypt is generally acknowledged to be a leading Arab state, Turkey realised that until Ankara does get some sort of dialogue going again with Cairo, its relations with most of the Arab world are likely to languish and be unproductive. This is increasingly damaging to Erdogan’s prestige inside the country as well as internationally.

Turkish Foreign Minister MevlutCavusoglu last week claimed that high-level contacts between Ankara and Cairo have resumed at the level of intelligence and Foreign Ministry. “Our contacts at diplomatic level had started,” he told Anadolu news agency.

However, according to several Egyptian and Arab media, an Egyptian foreign ministry official denied claims by the Turkish government that there has been resumption and restoration of ties with Cairo.

Another Egyptian diplomat told Al-Sharq newspaper that Cairo has no intention to negotiate a maritime deal with Turkey in the short run, adding that Cairo maintains its rejection of the maritime deal reached between Ankara and Libya’s Government of National Accord.

It is evident that the Turkish government now fervently wishes to restore diplomatic relations with Cairo, but Erdoganwho presents himself as the defender of Muslims all over the world is reluctant to denounce publicly the Muslim Brotherhood, a group designated by the Egyptian government as a terrorist organisation. Moreover, Turkey’s military presence in Libya and Erdogan’s anti-Sisi posture still remain major barriers to the improvement of bilateral relations.

Huseyin Bagci of the Foreign Policy Institute, a think tank in Ankara, explains Cairo’s reluctance concerning Erdogan’s overtures: “For tango, you need two, and Egypt is not so interested. Egypt wants to show to its public that Turkey has done wrong. Turkey is like a demanding gentleman who wants to dance. But the lady who’s been disappointed before by the gentleman, so it will take time to dance again. But Egypt will realize it’s in its interests economically, politically, technologically, diplomatically to work with Turkey.” (ANI)

Active Politics Can Be Draining

‘I Won’t Be Comfortable With An 88-Yr-Old CM For My State’

Prajesh Peter, 38, a software engineer from Kochi, says active politics can be draining and at 90 E Sreedharan will not be able to cope with the obligation required of a lawmaker

E Sreedharan is nearly 90! I totally don’t think it is the right age for him to enter politics. The Kerala voter makes well-informed choices and just bringing in a celebrity or a celebrated personality would influence only those who don’t have the capacity to think for themselves.

A couple of days ago, Mr Sreedharan’s name came up as the Chief Ministerial candidate, but they later backtracked. I wonder why this happened. But it’s good that this happened. I wouldn’t feel very comfortable with him as our CM. Leading a corporate, where everyone is self-disciplined is one thing, leading a town, city, state, with all kinds of people, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

I don’t think Mr Sreedharan’s entry into Kerala politics will change things for the BJP. The pandemic has shown us how important it is for us to have robust leadership at every level, but more so at the local level. I am not sure Mr Sreedharan is cut out at this age for all the actual physical hard-work that is required of a local MLA.

Peter (inset) feels engineering and politics are two different ballgames altogether

Also, what happened to BJP’s rule of not fielding candidates above the age of 75? The party bends so many rules of its own to suit its narrative. But then so many people don’t question anything that the party does.

It is rare that a person who has excelled in a particular field (be it arts, sports or engineering), will also excel in politics. These fields are about individual hard work and excellence, while politics is different ballgame altogether. I don’t see former Rajya Sabha members like Sachin Tendulkar and Rekha having brought any change even to their own fields, forget social issues at large.

Similarly, for Mr Sreedharan, good reputation isn’t necessarily going to translate into a good political innings. In politics, you have to have a keen understanding of local issues and how they intertwine with national level and international level politics. A politician should be a social worker first.

In June 2019, when the Delhi government proposed free commute for city women in Delhi Metro, Mr Sreedharan wrote a letter to the Prime Minister saying it would set a bad precedent. Why couldn’t the ‘Metro Man’ communicate directly with the state government of Delhi, where the issue belonged? I had an inkling then itself that he might join politics in future.

Many people laud him as the force behind the ambitious Metro projects. But it is not the achievement of Mr Sreedharan alone. The Delhi Metro Project was brought in by the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government. It was the political backing that made everything possible, from the doing away of bureaucratic roadblocks, getting international loans sanctioned to see the Delhi Metro built through heavily-populated areas.

So far in his career, he has to be answerable to only a few. I would love to see how Mr Sreedharan fields questions asked by the media, and would love to know his views on important matters and just how much hard-work he is ready to put in as a political candidate.

A Wounded Tiger Is More Dangerous, Says Mamata

Leg in a cast and sitting on a wheelchair, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said the “game is on” in the upcoming assembly elections, adding that “a wounded tiger is more dangerous”.

Addressing the public, Banerjee said, “If people vote for us, we will ensure that democracy returns to them. May all conspiracies against Bengal be destroyed. I assure you that I will campaign on a wheelchair with a broken leg. Khela Hobe (game is on). A wounded tiger is the most dangerous animal.”
Banerjee on Sunday held a roadshow — days after sustaining injuries during election campaigning — on a wheelchair from Gandhi Murti to Hazra in the state capital. It was her first public appearance after she was allegedly attacked by some people in Nandigram earlier this week.

On March 10, Banerjee had alleged that she was pushed by a few unidentified people during her election campaigning.

Banerjee sustained “severe bone injuries” on her left foot and ankle as well as bruises and injuries on her shoulder, forearm and neck, according to the report of her initial medical examination.

The Chief Minister was discharged from the hospital on March 12.

West Bengal is likely to witness a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and the BJP in the fray.

Elections will be held in eight phases in the state starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will be held on May 2. (ANI)

BJP Will Win Over 200 Seats In West Bengal: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who held a roadshow in Kharagpur on Sunday, said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will form the next government in West Bengal winning over 200 seats.

Speaking to ANI, Shah said, “With over 200 seats, BJP is going to form the government in West Bengal under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Indeed, the people of West Bengal want a change.”
Besides Amit Shah, West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and actor Hiran Chatterjee also took part in the roadshow that witnessed a huge crowd.

From ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogans to tunes of Rabindra Sangeet, the roadshow happened to be a vivacious event. The 1 km-long roadshow started from Premhari Bhavan and concluded at Malancha petrol pump of the town.

BJP has fielded Hiran Chatterjee from the Kharagpur Sadar assembly seat in the upcoming polls.

Shah will also address public meetings in Jhargram in West Bengal on Monday.

Elections to 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2. (ANI)

Chinese Coast Guard Will Harass Taiwan Soon: Analyst

Chinese Coast Guard vessels could soon join the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) warplanes in harassing Taiwan now that China’s Coast Guard Law is in effect, a Taiwanese analyst said.

“Chances are the harassment by Chinese Coast Guard assets will be more serious than that of Chinese military planes,” Focus Taiwan quoted Su Tzu-yun, a senior analyst at the government-funded Institute for National Defense and Security Research, as saying.
That’s because “Coast Guard ships operate with more flexibility due to their supposed civilian nature” and can carry out “gray zone” tactics, which refer to moves by a state to achieve its objectives but that are less likely to cause a military conflict, Su warned.

Last month, China implemented a new law that allows Beijing’s quasi-military force to use weapons against foreign ships that Beijing sees as illegally entering its waters.

Implemented on February 1, the law explicitly allows the Chinese coast guard to use weapons against foreign ships it sees as illegally entering China’s waters. Chinese coast guard vessels have been spotted near the uninhabited islets since the law took effect, Kyodo News reported.

Beijing claims full sovereignty over Taiwan, a democracy of almost 24 million people located off the southeastern coast of mainland China, despite the fact that the two sides have been governed separately for more than seven decades.

Taipei, on the other hand, has countered the Chinese aggression by increasing strategic ties with democracies including the US, which has been repeatedly opposed by Beijing.

In recent months, China has increased its military activities around Taiwan. According to China, it is responding to what it calls “collusion” between Taipei and Washington, Taiwan’s main international backer and weapons supplier, according to CNN. (ANI)

JLo Denies Reports Of Split With Alex

American celebrity couple Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have denied the reports of calling off their engagement.

According to Fox News, after the reports surfaced on Friday that claimed the ‘On the Floor’ singer and former MLB professional breaking up, both the couple shared a joint statement to refute the rumours.
The joint statement, shared with Fox News on Saturday, reads “All the reports are inaccurate. We are working through some things.”

A source close to the stars further claimed that while reports of their breakup were premature, the two have recently run into some issues.

“Nothing was concrete. They hit a rough patch but are working through it,” the source said.

An initial report before the news of their split surfaced claimed that Lopez was busy in the Dominican Republic filming a movie while Rodriguez is currently in Miami, getting ready for baseball season.

The recent reports also pointed that the reason of the power couple deciding to split may have stemmed from earlier rumours regarding an alleged romance between Rodriguez and ‘Southern Charm’ star Madison LeCroy.

However, various sources indicated at the time that there was no connection between the two, where one even claimed that Rodriguez doesn’t know the reality star.

A source close to the power couple also claimed to Fox News on Saturday that a third party did not contribute to the couple’s recent troubles. “Jennifer and Alex have much bigger things like businesses and their respective kids to worry about,” the source said.

On the other hand, Lopez earlier revealed that she and Rodriguez were seeing a therapist during the lockdown because of the ongoing tensions between them.

“It has been actually really good. We got to work on ourselves. We did therapy. I think it was really helpful for us in our relationship,” she told.

As reported by Fox News, the couple was also planning to buy a mega-mansion together but the idea didn’t materialise

The last official public event Lopez and Rodriguez attended together appears to be President Biden’s inauguration, where Lopez performed.

Lopez’s relationship with Rodriguez was confirmed in March 2017, and a month later, Lopez opened up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show about connecting with her future husband.

The couple made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala in May 2017 and celebrated Christmas as a family later that year. Lopez raved about Rodriguez in August 2018 as she accepted the MTV Video Music Awards’ Video Vanguard Award honour.

Rodriguez popped the big question in March 2019 as the couple enjoyed a tropical vacation. He announced the news on Instagram, sharing a photo of Lopez wearing a massive square-cut diamond ring. “She said yes,” he captioned the picture.

Lopez was previously married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, to Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003, and to Marc Anthony father of her twins, Max and Emme from 2004 to 2014. She was also engaged to Ben Affleck from 2002 to 2004.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez was married to Cynthia Scurtis from 2002 to 2008. They have two daughters, Natasha and Ella. (ANI)
