A New Dawn Rising In Kashmir: President Kovind

Addressing the nation on the eve of Independence Day, President Ram Nath Kovind said that a new dawn is rising in Jammu and Kashmir and urged the people, especially the youth, of the union territory to work on realising their aspirations through democratic institutions.

“A new dawn is rising in Jammu and Kashmir. The government has initiated the process of consultation with all stakeholders who have faith in democracy and the rule of law. I urge the people, especially the youth, of Jammu and Kashmir to utilise this opportunity and work on realising their aspirations through democratic institutions.

With all-round progress, India’s stature is rising in the international arena, as it was reflected in our participation in several key multilateral forums as well as in consolidating bilateral relationships with several countries,” said President Kovind.

The President also applauded rural India, particularly the agriculture sector, which has kept growing against all odds. He said, “On a recent visit to my ancestral village Paraunkh in Kanpur Dehat district, I was quite pleased to find that better infrastructure is being developed to make life better for people in rural areas. The psychological distance between the urban and the rural is now much less as compared to the past. After all, India lives in its villages which cannot be allowed to lag behind in development. That is why special campaigns, including the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, are being implemented for the welfare of our farmers.”

“These efforts are consistent with the vision of an Atma Nirbhar Bharat, a self-reliant India. With abiding faith in the inherent capacity of the economy, the government has further opened up defence, health, civil aviation, power and other sectors. The government’s new initiatives to promote eco-friendly, renewable sources of energy, particularly solar power, have won praise around the world. If there is an improvement in the ease of doing business, it has a positive impact on the ease of living for all. In addition to these, special emphasis is being given to public welfare. For example, the dream of having a home of one’s own is being realised, thanks to the Rs 70,000 crore credit-linked subsidy scheme. The series of agricultural marketing reforms will empower our ‘annadata’ farmers and help them get better price for their produce. These are some of the measures the government has taken to unleash the potential of every Indian,” said the President.

Diversity Essence Of Democracy: Advani On I-Day Eve

Veteran Bhartiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani on Saturday extended his greetings to people on 75th Independence Day, stating that the essence of India’s democracy is respect for diversity and freedom of expression and people should collectively strive to strengthen it.

In a message on the eve of Independence Day, the former Deputy Prime Minister said India had blossomed into a strong, prosperous and robust nation over the last 75 years.
“It has been my strong belief that the essence of Indian democracy is respect for diversity and freedom of expression. It is that has contributed to India being a successful democracy. Hence it is my sincere desire that all of us should collectively strive in strengthening this important democratic ingredient,” he said.

Advani recalled his school days in 1930s and said the only prayer they had was to see the country liberated from foreign bondage.

“This occasion brings to me vivid memories of my own school days in the 1930s, when the only prayer and dream we had, was to see our country liberated from foreign bondage and move rapidly towards ‘Param Vaibhav’- The Pinnacle of Glory.”

He said the triumph of independence was accompanied by the tragedy of partition.

“Having been a victim of the event myself, I painfully recall the physical and emotional trauma this tragedy caused to the displaced people on both sides of the border,” he said.

“It has been 75 years since and over the years, India has blossomed into a strong, prosperous and robust nation despite its many challenges. India’s global profile has risen remarkably, the world is looking to our country for leadership in overcoming many pressing challenges – from accelerating the global economy to meeting the climate change obligations. I am happy to see a wave of national pride and self-confidence among Indians of all walks of life,” Advani said.

Advani said he was also grateful that life gave him an opportunity to devote his life in service of the nation in the post-Independence era and make his contribution through Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) “that was co-founded in association with some of the most dedicated and selfless patriots”.

“The theme of this Independence Day is ‘Nation First, Always First’. I feel this echoes with the guiding principle of my own life and the BJP- ‘Nation First, Party Next, Self last'”,he said. (ANI)

Kejriwal Okays ‘Deshbhakti’ Curriculum In Delhi Schools

Delhi Government on Saturday initiated the rollout of the Deshbhakti Curriculum which will be taught to students in government schools of Delhi.

Kejriwal on receiving the curriculum said, “When we started working on this Curriculum 2 years ago, we did not know how it would be. It is a dynamic and constantly evolving process.”

Sisodia while talking said, “The government seeks to combine patriotism with the guidance of teaching and learning in Delhi Government schools.

The Deshbhakti Curriculum Framework draws three primary goals that are Knowledge, Values, and Behavior. (ANI)

Delhi Couple Providing Free Ambulance Services For 20 Years

A Delhi-based couple is providing free ambulance ride to people in need of emergency for the past 20 years.

Twinkle Kalia, India’s first woman ambulance driver along with her husband, has been giving free ambulance services in the Delhi-NCR region since 2002. Twinkle said that the couple’s personal experiences prompted them to take this step.
“My husband was 14 years old when his father met with a road accident. They changed around 6-7 hospitals but they couldn’t get any ambulance. Because of delayed treatment, his father fell into a coma for 2 years,” she said.

While talking about how she got inspired and started working with her husband, she said that she was diagnosed with Hepatitis B in 2008 and it was because of the support of the people, she recovered soon. After this, Twinkle took the initiative to help the needy by driving the ambulance herself.

Twinkle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. When asked about her experience, she thanks God for giving her this life. “When my chemotherapy was going on during the COVID, people used to call me asking for help, to provide them oxygen cylinders. I don’t know from where I used to get the energy and I used to go to help them. I believe my life is a bonus life and I want to spend it by serving people,” she added.

Twinkle recounted an incident where she rushed an injured boy who had lost his one leg to the hospital in a record time of three minutes and 52 seconds.

She said that the couple has a total of 12 ambulances and they have provided a free ride to 80,000 people till now. The couple also cremated dead bodies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

When asked about the problems they faced in this endeavour, Twinkle said that they faced a financial crunch during the lockdown as the couple was engaged in providing food to the people along with the free ambulance rides.

“Many people extended help. So I want more people to come and join hands. Even if we will die, this ambulance service will be continued. We also have to sometimes compromise with our kids’ school fees,” she added.

Twinkle’s husband Himanshu Kalia said that their objective is to help those people who don’t have any vehicles or money and they have a target of running 150 ambulances in the Delhi-NCR region.

Twinkle was conferred with Nari Shakti Puraskar by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2019 and was even acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he invited her for lunch. Himanshu recalls that the couple was really worried at that time due to financial issues.

He further said that he has already made arrangements for the future. “I have an insurance of Rs 8 crore. So even if I die, this ambulance service will continue,” he stated.

“We intend to add capable people in this mission to join hands with us. We are trying to coordinate with them so that such service continues to be provided to people,” he added. (ANI)

Banning of Porn by Government

‘Porn Makers Are Merely The Supply Part Of The Problem’

Pragati Adhikari, 48, an artist and editor in Bengaluru, says the Raj Kundra case should have highlighted the lack of female actors’ consent in an exploitative industry but few are discussing it

When I heard about the Raj Kundra case, I was shocked like most people. It is less about the person who did it and more about what had been done. India has had a difficult relationship with sexuality, and thus porn and deep down with understanding women. It is a long road that India needs to trudge before it understands the meaning of ‘consent’.

Banning of porn by government is not the solution. The way porn is sold on apps or other platforms sneakily, is the problem. Were the men and women involved in the film paid as per the contract for their work? Were they filmed as per their consent? Were they forced or were their boundaries and consent respected? In some cases, were their identities kept safe?

Many people are asking why Poonam Pandey and Sherlyn Chopra (who have accused Kundra of misbehaving with them) are complaining now. But the real issue is of consent. As a human being, they can decide to what extent and the ways in which they want to navigate their bodies. The people associated with the various apps or those involved in the shoot were alleged to have forced, threatened, coerced and misinformed the women involved in the shoot

Try to understand why is it ok to see men and women in the nude in Renaissance paintings? As an artist, my understanding is that the models and painters both had respect for each other and they both understood that they were part of a creative process. Consent was taken care of, boundaries were maintained. The difference is between aesthetics and titillation. The latter just devalues everyone involved.

Adhikari (left) feels Shilpa Shetty must not be seen complicit in the case just because she is accused Kundra’s wife

Raj Kundra and people he networks with are part of the supply, but one cannot say that the demand doesn’t exist. When even videos of rape victims are circulated in India, what does one say on the Kundra episode? We need more stringent laws, social sensitisation as well as individual responsibility when it comes to matters like these.

There were reports that porn consumption went up during the lockdown. I would say the lockdowns only amplified what already existed; staying indoors didn’t create the problem. Cases of child abuse including online grooming, sexual abuse, domestic violence and addiction, cases of morphing images using computer tools, all went up during the lockdown and showed us that we need urgent solutions now.

Porn without consent is an example of power-play. Many men think they know about women’s lives better than they themselves do, and act as guardians of grown up women. They need to understand women can think and feel for themselves, as can any other individual. Mansplaining needs to go out of the window too. A society can’t develop if there’s power play, we need cooperation.

Another point. Shilpa Shetty should not be seen as complicit in this case, just because she is Kundra’s wife. So many men don’t communicate with their wives and someone like Shilpa who has businesses of her own might have been too busy with her own work. We should let the law take its course.

Sometimes I feel the Indian society considers gaslighting women as par for the course. It is a deeply embedded social pattern. If a woman stands up for how she has been treated, they are gaslighted into believing that something must be wrong with them. Each member of the society needs to look inwards to change the scenario.

4 Lakh Displaced As Taliban Advances In Afghanistan

Amid Taliban advances in Afghanistan post US drawdown, 400,000 people have been displaced unfolding humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that about 400,000 people have been displaced in the country, including 120,000 who have fled to the capital Kabul, reported NHK World.
As widespread fighting intensifies, the United Nations in Afghanistan continues to call for a permanent ceasefire and a negotiated settlement in the interests of the Afghan people, reported UNHCR.

The human toll of spiralling hostilities is immense. The United Nations Assistance Mission has warned that without a significant de-escalation in violence, Afghanistan is on course to witness the highest ever number of documented civilian casualties in a single year since the UN’s records began, said UNHCR spokesperson Shabia Mantoo.

Our teams, as part of the broader UN effort, have assessed the needs of almost 400,000 internally displaced civilians this year. Responding initially to the most critical priorities, we are providing food, shelter, hygiene and sanitary kits and other life-saving assistance, together with partners, added Mantoo.

UNHCR has called on countries neighbouring Afghanistan to keep their borders open in light of the intensifying crisis in Afghanistan.

Ongoing fighting has been reported in 33 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.

The overwhelming majority of Afghans forced to flee remain within the country, as close to their homes as fighting will allow. Since the beginning of this year, nearly 120,000 Afghans have fled from rural areas and provincial towns to Kabul province.

The anti-government forces are overrunning large parts of the country as the US military proceeds with a withdrawal that is set to finish by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, the Taliban declared they had seized the capital of southeastern Paktika Province on Saturday. They are now believed to have taken more than half of the country’s 34 provincial capitals.

The agency says about 80 per cent of those who have been displaced since May when fighting intensified are women and children, and warns of a heightened humanitarian crisis caused by the lack of support, reported NHK World.

Following the deterioration of the security situation, European countries have started evacuating embassy staff, reported NHK World.

The UK and Germany said that they will reduce staff at their embassies in Kabul, moving some members to other countries.

The UK will send a military unit consisting of 600 troops to help evacuate its nationals.

Norway and Denmark said on Friday that they will temporarily close their embassies and evacuate their staff to other countries. (ANI)
