Tokyo Paralympics: Shuttler Krishna Nagar Wins Gold

Indian shuttler Krishna Nagar clinched the gold medal at the ongoing Paralympic Games by defeating Chu Man Kai 2-1 in the men’s singles SH6 -final match here at Yoyogi National Stadium on Sunday. Battling it out on Court 1, the second-seed Indian overwhelmed Chu Man Kai in three sets by 21-17, 16-21, 21-17 in 43 minutes. This is India’s fifth gold medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.

As expected, the early exchanges of the match were very close and the shuttle kept changing on the racquet of both players. The unseeded Man Kai then stepped up his game to gain a one-point lead by 11-10 going into the mid-game interval. Krishna came back strongly after the resumption as he wasted no time whatsoever in gaining the lead back. With his quick feet, the Indian managed to keep the rallies short and then was able to clinch the first set by 21-17 in 14 minutes.
Man Kai wasn’t ready to get bogged down as clawed his way back in the second set. A series of errors by Krishna saw the Indian trailing by 11-7 at the one minute break. Man Kai continued with his momentum to put a scintillating display and closed out the second game by 21-16 in 14 minutes and pushed the match to the decider.

The third set saw the Indian firing on all his cylinders and grabbing the handy 11-7 lead going into the interval. Man Kai showed great fightback after the resumption as he levelled the match against the second seed at 14-14. But it was Krishna who held his nerves better as Man Kai’s resistance soon perished as Krishna ran off to a 19-16 lead. Krishna won the third game by 21-17 in 15 minutes. The Indian grabbed the gold medal and Chu Man Kai had to settle with silver.

Earlier in the day, Suhas L Yathiraj, the Noida District Magistrate, bagged the silver medal after going down fighting in the final of the men’s singles SL4 event against France’s Lucas Mazur. Lucas won by 15-21, 21-17, 21-15 in 1 hour and 2 minutes. (ANI)

Kisan Mahapanchayat Underway In Muzaffarnagar Amid Tight Security

Kisan Mahapanchayat organised by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha is being held in Muzaffarnagar, on Sunday against the three central farm laws.

Uttar Pradesh Police has beefed up security in Muzaffarnagar to ensure law and order during Kisan Mahapanchayat which is termed as the ‘biggest ever congregation of farmers’ in the last nine months as the SKM stated.
“Appropriate arrangements have been made in view of the Kisan Mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday to ensure that no law and order problem arises. There is a possibility of farmers from neighbouring states Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand also attending the gathering,” Director General of Police Mukul Goel told reporters.

Protesting farmers have been demanding repeal of the three farm laws. A woman farmer said, “We have gathered here demanding repeal of the three farm laws. We request the PM to take back the three laws.”

Sanyukt Kisan Morcha organized “Kishan Mahapanchayat” at the Government Inter College grounds in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

While speaking to ANI, a Farmer from Haryana, said, “Our Prime Minister has no respect for the farmers. What type of king is Modi Ji if he is making the farmers sit in the winter? “

A woman farmer from the Jind district of Haryana said, “We have gathered here demanding repeal of the three farm laws. We request the PM to take back the three laws.”

“The Kisan Mahapanchayat of September 5 in Muzaffarnagar will be historic. Let us go to Muzaffarnagar on September 5. All of you are invited to the Kisan Mahapanchayat,” tweeted Rakesh Tikait.

The farmers have been demanding the repeal of the laws which they are afraid will do away with the MSP system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Farmer leaders and the Centre have held several rounds of talks but the impasse remains. (ANI)

Weekly Update: India’s Paralympics Winners; Schools Reopen Again

Four golds; seven silvers; six bronzes. That was India’s tally this weekend at the Paralympics in Tokyo. For the record, one of the golds was won by javelinist Sumit Antil who matched the achievement of his compatriot, Neeraj Chopra, in the recently concluded regular Olympics. Paralympics are a series of international contests for athletes with disabilities that are associated with and held following the summer and winter Olympic Games. And India’s showing this year has been notable. Besides Antil, Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal and Pramod Bhagat also won golds in shooting events.

Of course, given the size of its population (also considering that India’s population consists mainly of young people), India has been faring modestly at the Paralympics (which were still ongoing at the time of writing). India’s tally of medals got it a ranking of 26 with countries like Azerbaizan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan securing positions higher than that. But it is still a cause for celebration because winning at international events, if they don’t happen to be connected to cricket (a game that is not exactly universally played) is not an occurrence that recurs for India’s athletes and sportsmen.

This year, at the regular Olympics, India ranked at 48 with one gold and while the gold medallist (javelinist Chopra) was feted and bestowed with rewards and accolades, it brought home the hard fact that India needs to do much more to nurture sporting talent. In particular, the focus and efforts to nurture disabled sports persons need to be increased. As has happened this time, in the previous Paralympics in Rio, the Indian team of athletes fared better than their compatriots who competed in the regular Olympics. And that was notwithstanding the fact that disabled athletes get a raw deal compared to their able-bodied counterparts.

For instance, in the past television channels have given short shrift to the Paralympics because they felt it was not commercially viable. Many disabled athletes have to train without coaches. Some come from households that are underprivileged and their access to proper equipment, nutrition, and other facilities are constrained. Things have improved in recent years with funding, sponsorships, and state assistance increasing but the divide between India’s athletes and para-athletes is still quite wide. Perhaps the Indian contingent’s performance in Tokyo this year will bring the focus back on them.

Schools Reopen But Things Aren’t Normal Yet

Many schools in India’s bigger cities have been allowed to reopen and conduct regular in-person classes. When the second wave of Covid had ravaged India, schools were ordered to be shut down and classes could only be held online. While many schoolchildren have spent months at home (schools did reopen before the second wave but had to be closed down because of spikes in infections) learning online instead of in their classrooms, the reopening of schools now has led to mixed reactions.

Many parents as well as teachers have welcomed the move as online classes, especially for younger schoolchildren, are not really a substitute for classroom teaching. Besides, in India millions of children don’t have access to the internet. And while there is little researched statistics on this, the school shutdowns, particularly in rural areas with low internet penetration, might have led to many children dropping out of school involuntarily. The reopening could see many of them get back to school and resume their education.

What is significant, however, is that many parents are unwilling to send their children back to school again for fear of them getting infected by Covid. India’s vaccination rate is still low (a little less than 28% are fully vaccinated) and very few in the 12-18 age group have received full vaccination. Some parents are apprehensive about sending their kids to school if every child attending classes is not vaccinated. In some schools, attendance in classes is as low as 60%.

The government, on its part, is trying to roll out vaccination for children faster but innoculating 470 million (that is the estimated number going to school) is going to be hard. Moreover, as the Covid virus mutates and new variants are found to infect even those who are vaccinated, the fears of parents are not completely unfounded.

What then is the solution? If every child cannot be vaccinated quickly; and if new variants of the virus can be carried and spread by those who are asymptomatic, school authorities, parents and their communities would likely have to ensure protocols to minimise the possible spread of the virus. While that may not be an easy task, innovative solutions to protect children even as they get the opportunity to attend school have to be evolved. Living with Covid is now a reality for everyone. In a country with a predominantly young population that would mean devising ways in which schoolchildren can continue their education and yet be protected against the pandemic. That has to be the focus of the government, society, and India’s educational system.

Bengal BJP MLA Soumen Roy Joins Trinamool

In a fresh jolt to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, its MLA Soumen Roy joined Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

Roy, who was earlier associated with TMC joined BJP before the West Bengal Assembly polls. He is an MLA from Kaliaganj Assembly constituency in Uttar Dinajpur district.
He rejoined TMC in presence of state minister and party leader Partha Chatterjee in Trinamool Bhavan in Kolkata.

“I had to contest from Kaliaganj on the BJP ticket due to some circumstances. But my soul and heart belong to TMC. I joined the party again to support Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s efforts. I am apologetic to the party for the time I was not here,” Roy told mediapersons after joining TMC.

West Bengal has been witnessing a reverse trend of leaders rejoining TMC from BJP after assembly elections results. Earlier, BJP heavyweight Mukul Roy and his son Subhranshu Roy joined TMC.

The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC registered a landslide victory in polls winning 213 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly. Despite aggressive campaigning, the BJP lost the polls but emerged as the second-largest party with 77 seats. (ANI)

Ahmad Masoud Vows To Fight For Panjshir, Afghan Rights

Commander of the anti-Taliban resistance forces in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province, Ahmad Shah Masoud, has vowed to save the valley from the outfit and said that he will never stop his resistance for the sake of “God, justice and freedom,” local media reported on Saturday.

Masoud said that the resistance in Panjshir and protests by women’s rights in Afghanistan indicate that Afghans never give up when it comes to standing for their legitimate rights, the country’s Khaama Press said today.
The war over Panjshir province escalated from Friday night and reports have emerged that Panjshir may collapse soon. However, resistance forces denied such claims.

The valley lies in the Hindu Kush mountains, approximately 90 miles north of Kabul. The Taliban have been unable to take this major holdout of resistance after steamrolling across pro-government troops in a matter of months.

In a Facebook post, Ahamd Masoud said, “The defeat only happens when you give up the fight for your legitimate rights and when you get tired.”

Masoud has accused the Taliban of stopping humanitarian supply to the province. He has also urged the UN to press the Taliban to allow humanitarian aid to the province.

On Wednesday, Khaama Press reported that the Taliban’s commission for guidance and encouragement’s head Mullah Amir Khan Motaqi said that negotiations with Panjshir’s leaders failed and asked the people of the province to motivate their leaders.

“This is the first time in the recent history of Afghanistan that a newly appointed government announces general amnesty and why should the people of Panjshir still be in trouble and they do not avail themselves of the freedom,” Khaama Press quoted Motaqi as saying. (ANI)

Indian shuttler Pramod Bhagat clinched the gold medal after defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell by 2-0 in the men’s singles SL3 — final match here at Yoyogi National Stadium on Saturday.

Battling it out on Court 1, the first-seed Indian overwhelmed the second-seed Daniel Bethell in straight sets by 21-14 and 21-17 in 45 minutes. This is India’s first medal in badminton at the Tokyo Paralympics.
There was very little to separate both players in the initial minutes of the first set but soon Pramod who was first trailing 3-5 gained his way back into the match. The Indian went into the mid-game interval with an 11-8 lead. Bhagat continued with his agility as he dictated the pace and moved Bethell back and forth on the court. In 14 minutes, Pramod clinched the first set by 21-14.

Bethell made Bhagat work very hard in the second set as he tested the number-one seed’s patience thoroughly.
