Wankhede Arrives At Police Station In Connection With Forgery Case

Former Mumbai Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Director Sameer Wankhede arrived at Thane’s Kopri police station on Wednesday in connection with an alleged forgery case on a complaint by the state excise department.

The Bombay High Court has granted him interim protection till February 28.

Meanwhile, Wankhede has moved the Bombay High Court seeking quashing of FIR by Thane Police against alleged fraudulent bar licence. The court has fixed the hearing in the matter on February 22. He had moved another petition in the Bombay High Court seeking restoration of cancelled bar licence by Thane Collector.

An FIR was filed against Wankhede on Sunday for forgery in Mumbai’s Thane for allegedly obtaining a licence for a hotel by willful misrepresentation of his age, said the Kopri police on Sunday.

The action was taken following the complaint of State Excise Department official Shankar Gogavale who alleged that Wankhede was below 18 years of age in 1996-97 while obtaining a licence for Sadguru Bar in the city.

Thane collector had issued an order to cancel the licence of the bar.

As per the FIR, the former zonal NCB director was not eligible to do these agreements but he claimed to be a major on a stamp paper in his agreement deed for Sadguru Hotel of Thane. (ANI)

Google Begins Rolling New Pitch-Black Dark Mode

Google has recently begun rolling out its new pitch-black dark mode.

As per The Verge, the previous dark mode was a grey that was soothing on the eyes, but Google switched to a true black that should really pop on OLED and AMOLED displays.

Google announced the wider availability of dark mode earlier this month, but thus far, the release has been slow. Few people seem to have it, and as per reports, some users have received the new theme only to lose it.

Google said it was testing a new dark mode in February of last year and later announced that the new dark theme was available on desktop and mobile in a tweet earlier this month.

The new display could be a win for those who thought the dark grey wasn’t dark enough. But it could also be a win for those who want to save some battery life on devices with OLED displays. (ANI)

The Politics Behind Hijab

‘All Women Must Support Muslim Girls’ Right To Wear Hijab’

Smriti Hegde*, a school principal in Gulbarga (Karnataka), says the politics behind hijab row seeks to fracture the social fabric of the country

It’s sad to see how girls, once again, are being targeted for their choice of clothing — jeans, T-shirts, shorts and now hijab. It’s more painful to see this time, as these girls are being denied of education because they chose to wear a headscarf.

I sense a lot of politics in it. I have the same questions what others have. Since my school days I have been seeing Muslim girls, many of my friends, attending schools in hijab. This issue never came up. One day, we hear that girls in hijab are not allowed in schools. This hijab controversy has been forcefully created.

The purpose of schools was to provide education and not divide children on the basis of gender, colour, caste and religion. This is also affecting the minds of innocent children. The main aim of the education was to develop the thinking and mindset which adopts everyone, but young children are learning something else — differences between communities. I am afraid even among children it’s gradually turning into ‘us’ vs ‘them’ issue, which is extremely bad for the society and the country.

Since this hijab issue started, I am observing our students very closely. This controversy has been going on far from here but I can see the shift in their behaviour. The camaraderie among students of two different faiths seemed to be waned. I sense a kind of cold war among them. It’s extremely disheartening to witness this. We never grew up like that. Some of my close friends are from Muslim community. Religions never came between us.

I blame the politicians for it. They are destroying an entire generation for their temporary electoral gains. Had the government wanted, they would have nipped the issue in the bud. But it appears that it was rather allowed to spread — from one school to another. Then, we witnessed disturbing videos where students were clashing with police. Kids, who were supposed to be in schools, they were brought on roads with stones in their hands.

I personally believe that women from all faiths should come together and support Muslim women. This is not a matter of hijab. I am afraid that today, it is about hijab; tomorrow, they might force Hindu girls to wear sari.

While this controversy is going on, there’s one group of people who advocate of barring all kinds of religious activities from schools. However, I am of the different opinion. India is a highly religious country. People practise their faith openly and removing the sign of religions from schools is not going to remove religions from the personal lives of students. We should rather teach assimilation and the idea of tolerance to students, who can develop the idea of India where everyone can live peacefully together despite having religious differences.

As told to Md Tausif Alam

“I am confident that we will win as many seats as we did in the 2017 Assembly polls,” Singh told ANI.

Singh also stated that the BJP is stronger than it was five years ago because of the performance of the Yogi Adityanath government in the state.

“People have realised that if there is any party that can bring good governance and development, it is the BJP. There’s no alternative to the BJP across India when it comes to governance and development,” he added.

Polling for the fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections began in 59 constituencies at 7 AM on Wednesday.

BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj Demands Law Against Hijab

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Unnao, Sakshi Maharaj, on Wednesday demanded a law to ban the wearing of hijab across the country. He also slammed the Opposition for stoking the hijab row.

“Opposition brought the Hijab issue into elections. This rule (for uniform) was formed in Karnataka, and people did this (row) in reply. But I think, a law should be made to ban (wearing of) hijab across the country,” the BJP leader told ANI today.
On Monday, the Karnataka High Court bench observed that the petitioners were not only seeking permission to wear the headscarf but also wanted a declaration that it becomes part of a religious sanction to bind everyone who followed Islam. The government also reiterated that hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam.

The Karnataka High Court will continue hearing on Friday various petitions challenging the ban on headscarves in educational institutes.

The hijab protests in Karnataka began in January this year when some students of Government Girls PU college in the Udupi district of the state alleged that they had been barred from attending classes.

During the protests, some students claimed they were denied entry into the college for wearing hijab.

Following this incident, students of different colleges arrived at Shanteshwar Education Trust in Vijayapura wearing saffron stoles. The situation was the same in several colleges in the Udupi district.

The pre-University education board had released a circular stating that students can wear only the uniform approved by the school administration and no other religious practices will be allowed in colleges. (ANI)

Japan will mull new measures for adoption in the event of the deterioration of the situation around Ukraine, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Wednesday, commenting on Russia’s recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics (DPR, LPR).

PM Modi also emphasised for more Startups to come up in rural India. “The target of ‘Leaving no citizen behind’ can only be achievable with such,” he added.

The theme of the programme ‘Leaving No Citizen Behind’ listed its aims to brin industry leaders, policymakers and government officials together to deliberate upon the positive impact of the Budget and identify actionable strategies to collectively work towards furthering the common goal of upliftment of everyone, a saturation of each household and village, leaving no one behind.
