Weekly Update: Biden As King Henry II; Badals The Invincible; Slap Gets The Oscar

The ageing King, sorry President, Joe Biden, probably forgot he is not absolute sovereign. In Poland he got into King mode and thundered in his emotionally charged but barely audible voice, ‘Who will rid me of that Pesky Putin’ or something like that.

It was King Henry II of England in 1170 who got exasperated with Archbishop Thomas Becket as the somewhat Godly Becket wouldn’t twist Christ’s teachings to suit Henry. In his court with his nearest Knights present, Henry II is reputed to have said. “Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest!” (or perhaps meddlesome).

Henry of course was sovereign King with absolute power. Four of his knights standing in the room, took this as a megaphone hint and went and clobbered the poor pious Archbishop (head priest of England) to death. Henry got his wish or command done. No questions asked and no Government enquiries, police investigation or charges.

When Biden said “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power” at a public function for every bounty hunter in the world, every wannabe assassin and all his arsenal of intelligence services to hear, the world went a bit, ‘What!’. He even spoke on a mic live on TV so it was loud and clear. Every news channel worth a penny or paisa was broadcasting it.

Times have changed. The President of the world’s foremost power that is meant to police international law and order, democratic accountability, and State sovereignty all across the world (except in USA) just seemed to have said, ‘go break the law, fulfil my wish’.

Every leader of almost every NATO state distanced itself from this, plunging America’s already faltering status further into a hungry blackhole. Even Britain’s Boisterous Boris took cover.

America’s first minister to the leader, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, quickly did a somersault and tried a damage exercise saying, ‘He didn’t mean what you think he meant’. English language has its advantages. It can apparently be translated in several frames of hermeneutic dexterity.

In contrast to the 1170 court of Henry II, the four knights of the United States of America 2022 who were probably meant to get the hint, charge on Putin and dispose him in the way they do, went underground for the first time. The CIA, the FBI, the State Department and Homeland Security, all with ‘unlimited licences to kill’ responded, ‘not my job’ or ‘not done this way, Boss’.

It is possible that Biden got carried away in Poland. It has a lot of old castles and lots of stories of monarchs with great powers and gory deeds in the past. Its current President also ignores EU when he wants to. Biden thought as head of the most powerful country (or once most powerful country before the Taliban ran it out of Afghanistan with WW2 weapons and sandals) he could do a Henry II. Even the megalomaniac Trump didn’t go that far. But Biden has a history.

Badals The Invincsibles

It seems that some political parties have a unique approach to politics playing ‘loser takes all’. The family firm, the Indian National Congress, has been doing this for nearly a decade. Losing seats like a drying stream evaporating water in summer heat, the Congress has repeatedly placed its faith in the unwinnable leadership, the Gandhis. Rahul who has the look of a fish out of water in politics, has had numerous votes of confidence confirming his ‘extraordinary leadership’. Move over Indira Gandhi, Rahul will reign Congress longer than you if the losing streak carries on.

Now it is once great party, the Akali Dal that is outdoing the Congress. From a formidable 75 seats in 1997, it has now landed hard in 2022 with just three. This is the party that once defeated the might of British Empire in the plains of Punjab. It is the party of the Sikhs in the Sikh heartland!

The decline has been inversely proportional to the level of confidence expressed in its leader Sukhbir Singh Badal. It gained just 15 seats in 2017. Every Akali flocked around him saying ‘great result, only Sukhbir can save us’.

In 2022, it has been reduced to a rump. So much so that 94 year old senior Badal who will probably be fighting elections even from his dying bed when he gets there, and son Sukhbir Badal, both lost their seats. The message of the Punjab voters seems to have gone with hypersonic speed through one ear out of the other ear. Consequently, all the Akali Dal (Badal) high command got together and elected Sukhbir as the best Akali leader ever. ‘Only Sukhbir can lead us to victory!’ And its not even a Pollywood comic.

The Akali Dal (Badal) perhaps took its cue from another sister party, the Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar. Its leader Mann gets elected unanimously after losing every election with the promise of the one messiah that will lead Sikhs to political nirvana, despite the fact that almost no one wants him to.

There must be some logic in this somewhere. As long as these parties were winning, there were constant criticisms and challenges to the winning leaders. But when they started losing, there started unending bowing to the ‘dear leader’, knees first.

Will Bollywood Follow Hollywood

Bollywood has a habit of copying Hollywood. It copies films, dance style, stories, even character types. After all it is celluloid. If it does not mimic life, it mimics competitors.

Hollywood has its Oscars, Bollywood has its International Indian Film Academy. The word Academy gives it a pretence of the Hollywood Academy Awards.

Since Bollywood likes to Indianise or Hindi-ise most of Hollywood, one wonders if in the next IIFA there will be a version of the Will Smith drama simulated in the award ceremony. It’s good for the rating and the mimic game.

As every Bollywood wallah knows, Will Smith couldn’t stomach a joke at his wife’s expense made by Chris Rock. So he got up and threw a right (or may be left) hook or slap on Rock right in the middle of the ceremony while the world was watching.

He even swore in the bargain. Many thought it was an act. But it was real. Will Smith apologised when he went to pick his own best actor award.

We don’t know what it will do to Will Smith’s image. But it certainly got the Oscars more audience than the Ukraine war which is reaching a fatigue point with audiences. Everyone is talking about ‘not talking about’ Will Smith and that slap or outburst. ‘Did you watch that Simi, Bunty or Radha or whoever?’ It is burning out the social media. It is headlines on the main media.

So wait for good old mimic Bollywood version of this in the next IIFA. It may not be an exact narrative, but the crystal ball says there will be some drama that will get IIFA in the news. You heard it ‘prophesised’ first as Saturn joins pattern.

Ranveer Shakes A Leg With Anurag Thakur

There’s hardly a chance to not ask Ranveer Singh to shake a leg on one of his most hit dance songs ‘Malhari’ if he is present on stage for an event. The same happened during his Monday visit to Dubai Expo 2020, where he was joined by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.

On the 3rd day of his visit to Dubai, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur today held a conversation with Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh on ‘The Global Reach of Indian Media and Entertainment Industry’ at the India Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020.

During the event, Ranveer was asked to perform a step on his hit dance song ‘Malhari’. The 36-year-old actor also made the 47-year-old minister shake a leg with him.

For the unversed, Anurag Thakur during the conversation said that Indian people in Dubai are the real brand ambassadors of India as the India Pavilion has been a huge crowd puller with 1.7 million visitors.

The minister added that the country is celebrating 75 years of India’s independence and the celebrations are taking place not just in India but abroad also.

Acknowledging the contribution of films to India’s soft power projection, the Minister said India is a land of storytelling and the film industry has left a great impact on people of foreign countries who identify India for its films.

He said his aim is to “make India the content sub-continent of the world. This can generate millions of jobs in India and help create content for the whole world.”

Ranveer also said that Indian content is on the cusp of making its presence felt on the world stage. “Indian entertainment is going to explode globally,” he said adding “Our stories resonate with people and transcend cultural boundaries and Indians abroad connect with India through films.”

Ahead of the lively discussion, Anurag Thakur and Ranveer Singh took a tour of the India Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020.

The minister also extended a warm invitation to Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, to India to discuss further collaboration opportunities in the tourism and media and entertainment sector. (ANI)

Baghel Requests 17 CMs To Seek GST Compensation

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in his letter to the states, shared the disadvantages of the ending of GST compensation and said that “We should talk to the Centre together.”

In regard to Central Government’s decision to discontinue the GST Compensation after June 2022, Chief Minister Baghel has written a letter to the Chief Ministers of 17 states to discuss this issue.

Through his letter, Baghel has discussed the losses that will be faced by all the states due to this decision taken by the Centre.

Baghel has sent letters to the Chief Ministers of Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Delhi.

In the letter, Baghel has requested the CMs of 17 states to make a joint request to the Central Government to continue the GST compensation for 10 years, so that the revenue of the states can be saved from a huge loss, otherwise, the central government should create an alternative arrangement.

Baghel talked about three key points: the first point was that in the pre-budget meeting under the chairmanship of the Union Finance Minister on December 29 in New Delhi, CM and state finance ministers present in the meeting expressed deep concerns over the closure of GST Compensation after June 2022.

Hoping for a positive response from the central government, they had requested to extend the GST compensation for five years in the meeting itself.

In the second key point, he discussed the issues that will be faced by manufacturing states like Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. He further added that these states will face huge financial losses if GST Compensation is discontinued and added that there would be a loss of around Rs 5,000 crore in the coming financial year only to Chhattisgarh.

He added that other states will also have fewer revenue receipts in the coming financial year which will make it very difficult for the states to arrange money for public interest works and development works.

In the last point Baghel pointed out that after the introduction of the GST regime, the independence of the states on tax policy has been greatly reduced. Apart from commercial tax, the states are left with no option but to increase the revenue on other items.

He added, in order to recover from the impact of COVID-19 on the state’s economy and get the due benefits of GST compensation, the states should request the central government to implement the continuation of this existing mechanism of compensation for GST, at least for the next five years.

Baghel exuded confidence that the states would agree to his point of view and together would make a common request to the Centre to agree on this issue. (ANI)

Birbhum Violence: WB Governor Meets Amit Shah

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi.

The agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed yet. The meeting comes amid the ongoing row between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party over the issue of Birbhum violence.

Earlier on Monday, five BJP MLAs including the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari were suspended from the West Bengal Assembly on Monday following a clash with TMC MLAs on the floor of the House over Birbhum violence.

Slamming West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over Birbhum violence earlier had said that it is high time to revisit confrontational unconstitutional stance so that democratic values and human rights get restored and people get a reprieve from repressive ‘fear’ and suffering.

In a three-page reply letter to Banerjee, the Governor said that there was a “political conspiracy” behind the violence. He also said that the number of casualties may be higher.

As many as eight people were burnt to death in the Rampurhat area of West Bengal’s Birbhum after a mob allegedly set houses on fire following the killing of Trinamool Congress leader Bahadur Shaikh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe of the Birbhum violence case following the Calcutta High Court order. (ANI)

Taliban Bans BBC, VOA Broadcast In Afghanistan

The Taliban on Sunday banned British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Voice of America (VOA) broadcast services in Afghanistan.

The ban is the latest in a series of restrictions the Islamist group has imposed on Afghan media to stifle freedom of expression since taking control of the country last August, reported VOA.

“The BBC’s TV news bulletins in Pashto, Persian, and Uzbek have been taken off air in Afghanistan after the Taliban ordered our TV partners to remove international broadcasters from the airwaves,” Tarik Kafala, head of languages at BBC World Service, said in a statement.

The head of languages at BBC World Service also called on the Taliban to immediately remove the ban on its news bulletins, reported VOA.

He noted that “more than six million Afghans consume the BBC’s independent and impartial journalism on TV every week and it is crucial they are not denied access to it in the future.”

VOA, which is headquartered in Washington, has swiftly denounced the Taliban for taking its programs off-air.

“We ask the Taliban to reconsider this troubling and unfortunate decision,” Acting VOA Director Yolanda Lopez said in a statement Sunday. “The content restrictions that the Taliban are attempting to impose are antithetical to freedom of expression that the people of Afghanistan deserve,” said Lopez.

The American broadcaster produces a half-hour news bulletin in Pashto and Dari, the two main languages are spoken in Afghanistan, five days a week for its Afghan partners, TOLO news and Shamshad TV, reported VOA.

The ban on VOA and BBC programs comes as the Taliban are under increased international pressure and condemnation for keeping schools shuttered for teenage Afghan girls.

The Taliban reopened secondary schools after the winter break Wednesday, March 23, which also marks the start of the school year for most Afghan provinces.

But the de facto authorities at the last minute decided against allowing girls above the sixth grade to return to the classroom, citing a lack of arrangements for them, including school uniforms, in accordance with Sharia or Islamic law.

A Taliban information ministry spokesman, when asked for his comments on whether they have ordered Afghan channels to remove the international broadcasters from their airways, told VOA he would collect information and get back.

Domestic and international critics say media and freedom of speech have worsened under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

Afghan journalists have been repeatedly detained and subjected to violence by security forces. In December, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released a survey, showing that at least 40 per cent of Afghan media outlets have disappeared and more than 80 per cent of women journalists lost their jobs since the Taliban takeover of the country.

Hundreds of journalists have also left Afghanistan since August for fear of Taliban reprisals or because of problems associated with practising their profession under the new rulers.

More than 6,400 journalists and media employees have lost their jobs since August 15 when the Taliban seized control of the Afghan capital, Kabul, according to the RSF survey. (ANI)

No Contracts For Purchase Of Crude Oil From Russia

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, the Central government clarified in the Rajya Sabha on Monday that its Oil Public Sector Undertakings, presently, do not have any contracts for the purchase of crude oil in Indian Rupees (INR) from Russia or any such other countries.

“At present, Oil Public Sector Undertakings neither have any contract nor is any such proposal under consideration from Russia or any other country for the purchase of crude oil in Indian Rupees (INR),” Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli said in a written reply.

The Minister’s response came when Biju Janata Dal MP Sujeet Kumar asked: “Whether India is under any contract with any country to purchase crude oil in rupees instead of dollars, either partially or wholly”.

The reply is significant amid assumptions that both India and Russia trade may take place in local currencies.

Amid reports that New Delhi is planning to buy Russian oil at a discounted rate following the surge in global oil prices after the Ukraine conflict, sources said India’s legitimate energy transactions should not be politicized.

The sources further stated that the jump in oil prices after the Ukraine conflict has now added to our challenges.

According to some media reports, Indian Oil Corporation purchased 3 million barrels of Russian crude oil, the first such transaction since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February. (ANI)
