Shiv Sena To Support Droupadi Murmu: Uddhav

The Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray has decided to support Droupadi Murmu, the BJP-led NDA’s candidate, in the Presidential polls on July 18.

“We decided to extend our support to Droupadi Murmu for her presidency, considering that a tribal woman is getting an opportunity to become the President. Yes, I know politics will start after this but there is no politics in it. We had supported Pratibha Patil for the presidency in the past as well,” said Uddhav Thackeray today.
He added, “There was no pressure on me for this decision as it is being circulated that my MPs brought pressure on me and I had to forcefully take this decision. All my MPs unanimously said that till now no one has been given an opportunity to represent the Adivasi community at that level. Thus, we all should support Droupadi Murmu ji and we decided to give our support to Murmu in the presidential election. There was no pressure on us in this matter, nor did we think about any political angle in it.”

Sixteen of the 18 Shiv Sena MPs from Maharashtra have urged Uddhav Thackeray to support NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu in the Presidential election. In a meeting called by Thackeray in Mumbai yesterday, 16 MPs said the party must extend its support to the NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.

The presidential elections are scheduled to be held on July 18. There is no whip for the presidential elections and MPs can vote as per their will.

Earlier, Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar told the media that 16 of the party’s MPs had agreed that Sena should support Murmu as she is a woman belonging to the tribal community. Kiritkar said, 16 out of the total 18 Lok Sabha MPs of the Sena physically attended the key meeting on the presidential elections and all agreed on supporting Murmu. He said, out of 18, two MPs Bhavana Gawali and Shrikant Shinde were absent from the meeting. (ANI)

Fake Cricket League With Russian, Pak Link Busted In UP

Days after an elaborate betting con, targeting Russian punters and involving farmers in a Gujarat village, was busted for organising a fake ‘Indian Premier League’-like tournament, a syndicate with a similar modus operandi in Uttar Pradesh was uncovered with two accused landing in police net.

The fake cricket league which went by the name “Big Boss T20 Punjab League” was held at cricket grounds in Meerut, nearly 60 kilometres from New Delhi, with organisers luring punters to bet on the matches through a mobile application “Cric Heroes.” The ‘mastermind’ of this caper ran the entire operation remotely from Russia’s capital Moscow according to police officials, with a methodology similar to the fake cricket league busted in Gujarat a few days ago. Two accused in the caper, identified as Shitab alia Shabbu and Rishabh were arrested near the Meerut bypass road by a police team.
“Ashok Chaudhary, the ‘mastermind’ used to pay Rishabh Rs 40,000- Rs50,000 per match. ‘Players’ were also paid for the matches,” said Deepak Bhuker, Superintendent of Police, Hapur.

“After analysing WhatsApp calls and messages of the arrested suspects it was found that the phone numbers were from Russia and one number was of the Pakistan series. We will further probe these numbers…these matches were being held in Meerut for the past four to five months,” said the police official.

SP Bhuker added that videos were also found of volleyball matches and plans were being hatched to start betting on these matches.

The Gujarat betting syndicate began three weeks after the real IPL matches culminated. For the fake”T-20 League” in which the gang leased a farmland in a remote village in the state and paid farmers and unemployed youth for games that were then streamed online on an Youtube Channel called ‘IPL’ to reel in Russian punters who placed bets in roubles, the Russian currency on a Telegram channel. The syndicate managed to reach the ‘quarter finals’ of the fake ‘IPL league’ when they were busted after police received a tip-off earlier this month. The setting was high tech with high-resolution cameras installed on the field, a live streaming scoreboard and even recorded crowd noise, that when streamed seemed to create an impression of a major tournament!

In Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, coordinated action by police teams of Hapur Rural and the district surveillance cell led to the arrest of two people who set up the entire thing in such a way that it resembled real matches.

Police said after investigations it was found that the “mastermind” of the racket was Ashoke Chaudhary who was in close coordination with one Asif Muhammad who ran the “league” from Russia with the help of equipment provided by Chaudhary.

Elaborating on the modus operandi of the gang, police said that the accused used to pay local boys to participate but uploaded on the app, the names of Ranji players instead of theirs.

“Accused Shitab alias Shabbu used to select the ground to play the cricket matches and his accomplice Rishabh used to upload details of local boys instead of Ranji players on the Cric Heroes app. The matches were then streamed live on YouTube where active punters placed bets. The masterminds of the racket are Ashoke Chaudhary, who is based in Russia and Asif Muhammad,” police added.

A total of Rs 15,150 in cash, 7800 Sri Lankan rupees, six mobile phones, two debit cards, two cameras, an LCD monitor, and a number of gadgets used in betting have been recovered from the two accused, police said. (ANI)

To Excel, Madrassas Must Impart Skill Training

Ever since their emergence, the Madrassas in India have persisted with a curriculum that has seen few changes. The fact that literally, lakhs of Muslim children acquire their primary, and perhaps their only formal education, in these Madrassas where only literature and Islamic studies with a cursory knowledge of social sciences thrown in, are taught, should be a matter of concern not only to their parents but also to anybody concerned with education in any manner.

The format of education imparted to the students of Madrassas ought to be modified keeping in view the shifting demands of the job market – a concern that can no longer be under-played.  And this is perfectly possible without an erosion of the cultural and religious identity.

Developing suitable answers for today’s dilemmas requires an examination of the essentials of education. Education involves transference to others, of knowledge and values accumulated by mankind. Even though schools and teachers have been part of the process of education for hundreds or even thousands of years, it is the spirit of enquiry that has enriched mankind with knowledge. We learn through reading, experience by watching others and by observing the world in general.  Inculcating a spirit of scientific enquiry in students will perhaps be the best manner of propelling them on the path of learning.

Even though this may be the general agreement, it is a fact that in this country particularly, whenever an attempt is made to institute any profound change, a resistance begins to act from its very inception. The critics flinch at the vision of a Madrassa system where modern education or skills enhancement would jettison religious knowledge and make education “worldly” and “impersonal”.

It is a matter of satisfaction to note that of late, some Madrassas, have realised the significance of modern education, and have introduced teaching science, English and Computer skills in their curricula. For example the two largest Madrassas in India, Darul Uloom-Deoband and Nadwa-tul Ulema-Lucknow have braced themselves to be the harbinger of change and have introduced English language teaching and computer skills as part of their curriculum. But both have not been able to bring about any noticeable improvement in the quality of education they impart to their students.

It is often argued that if modern education is so sensational, why hasn’t it brought any notable improvement to education in the few Madrassas that have adopted it? In reality, in spite of modern education being imparted, thousands of Madrassas don’t have a well-formulated curriculum, and/or couldn’t implement it even if they wanted to, as they don’t have sufficiently trained and proficient staff.

It is also a fact that in the earlier years of madrassa education, the founders of Darul Uloom-Deoband, insisted on imparting skills enhancement to their students. Thus enabling them to earn their livelihood and also continue with their religious duties. These skills enhancements included calligraphy, book binding, printing and tailoring. However, over time these components were removed from the madrassa training.

But as it is the wheels of history continue turning round and round, and indeed now-a-days Skills Enhancement has become a buzzword for the whole world not just for madrassa students.

In the given scenario, madrassa authorities could very well take advantage of different skills enhancements programmes run by the GoI, government and private institutions and different universities and colleges throughout the country.

Madrassa authorities across India can collaborate with National Skills Foundation of India, National Skill Development Corporation, NSIC, Delhi Skill & Entrepreneurship University, Jamia Millia Islamia, AMU and Jamia Hamdard University to name a few, to initiate skills enhancement and development programmes for their students.

In addition, madrassas can also collaborate with various NGOs, who have a credible record of delivering Skills Enhancement and personality development courses over the years.

Madrassa students have an edge over students of modern education system, their memorisation capacity is honed so well that this capacity can be utilised to guide them through various skills enhancement courses related to computers and IT, like data analytics and programming. In the past, organisations, which had embarked on this path, report of highly encouraging results.

If the madrassa authorities in collaboration with central bodies like the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Maulana Azad National Foundation carry forward such successful programmes, whose results have been quantified and documented well, then this could augur well both for the country and madrassa. It will also ensure taking the sting out of the critic’s blame that madrassa students are inferior to the students who have pursued courses under the modern education system.

Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, Orange Alert, Traffic Snarls

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday amid an ‘orange’ alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Several parts of Mumbai have been affected by waterlogging, including the Andheri subway and Bhoiwada, leading to traffic snarls in the city.

Hindamata junction in the city’s Southbound has reported 0.5 feet of water being logged.
The administration has, however, requested the commuters to plan their travel accordingly, as the traffic from Milan Subway and Andheri Subway has been diverted to S.V. Road and D.N Nagar Chowki after the former experienced the logging of water to heights up to 2 feet.

As the traffic got slow at the Neelam Junction in the city has 0.5 feet of waterlogging, the pace of several parts of the city including Dattaram Lad Marg, Sardar Hotel, and Bhoiwada also slowed down.

The IMD predicted that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, for the next 24 hours, in the city and its suburbs, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places and has forecast the maximum and minimum temperature of the city as 28 degrees Celcius and 24 degrees Celcius, respectively.

“Moderate to heavy rain in city and suburbs. Possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely,” Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai predicted.

The weather forecasting agency further predicted that occasional gusty winds are also reaching the city at a “very likely” speed of 40-50 kilometres per hour.

It also said that a 4.47 metres High Tide can be expected to take place around 10.54 AM, and hence two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Mumbai, while three have already been on standby.

Meanwhile, the national weather forecasting agency, IMD on Sunday, predicted intense wet spells over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and coastal Karnataka from today onwards.

“A fresh intense wet spell likely over Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka from 12th July, 2022,” it said in a tweet.

The heavy rainfall in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, during the past few days, has resulted in waterlogging and incessant downpours that have created a flood-like situation.

According to the Maharashtra SDMD report on Sunday, a total of 76 people have died (till July 10) since June 1 and as many as 838 houses were damaged due to the rain-related incidents in the state.

“At least 4,916 people have been shifted to safer locations, and 35 relief camps were set up by the disaster management department and rehabilitation department,” it said.

The SDMD said 125 animals have also lost their lives in rain/flood-related incidents in Maharashtra since June 1. (ANI)

Two trains 12927 – Dadar – Ektanagar Express and 12928 – Ektanagar – Dadar Express were partially cancelled, Western Railway said.

Western Railway, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Sumit Thakur said due to incessant rains in the last few days, it has had a massive impact on some sections of Western Railway and has also affected the operation of trains.

Godhra Junction railway station was flooded which affected the oncoming vehicles. Especially the Rajdhani Express going to Delhi from Mumbai, Thakur said.

“Heavy rains affected a total of 30 trains. Along with this, the track has also been damaged on Vadodara and Ekta Nagar line near Vadodara. Gehlot: BJP Should Clarify Alleged Links With Udaipur Accused

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday made serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party of having links with the accused involved in the gruesome murder of Kanhaiya Lal Teli in Udaipur and asserted that the BJP should issue a clarification.

Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor was beheaded in Udaipur on June 28 by Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse Mohammad for supporting Nupur Sharma.
“The relationship of the accused with BJP in (Udaipur beheading) case is known to everyone. Recently it was found that the accused lived in a rented place, owned by another Muslim person,” said CM Ashok Gehlot.

Gehlot asked the BJP to respond to the allegations of its links with one of the accused in the recent murder of a tailor in Udaipur.

Gehlot asked the BJP to come clean on the allegations that the BJP helped one of the accused by requesting the police to drop the complaint against the accused as he is a BJP worker.

“Owner of the house had alleged that they (accused who beheaded Kanhaiya) were not paying rent, he approached the police for it. But even before the police could investigate the matter, BJP workers started calling them (landlord) stating they were BJP workers and warning the landlord of not troubling the party worker,” added Gehlot.

He asked BJP leaders to issue a clarification on the “connection” of the accused with the party.

As the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested the seventh accused in connection with the Udaipur killing, photographs of the main accused, Riaz Akhtari, with some BJP leaders, including the Leader of Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria, emerged on social media, prompting the Congress to allege that Akhtari was a BJP worker.

However, the BJP has denied the allegations.

The deceased, Kanhaiyya Lal Teli, who was a tailor by profession was killed brutally for putting social media posts in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on June 28.

The beheading incident had sparked public outrage across the country.

The assailants identified themselves in the video as Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad. In the video, Riyaz was seen attacking 47-year-old Kanhaiya Lal with a sharp-edged weapon while the other, Ghouse, recorded the crime on his mobile phone.

Riyaz and Ghouse were arrested from Bhim in the Rajsamand district.

The seventh accused has been identified as Farhad Mohammad Sheikh aged 31.

The accused was arrested yesterday, Farhad Mohammad was a close criminal associate of one of the main killers accused Riyaz Attari and was an active part of the conspiracy to kill Kanhaiya Lal.

The NIA took over the investigation of the Udaipur beheading case and re-registered the case on June 29.

Earlier six accused persons were arrested in this case on June 29, July 1 and 4 respectively. (ANI)

Siddaramaiah Accuses Prahlad Joshi Of Conspiring Against Yediyurappa

Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Monday accused Union Minister Prahlad Joshi of conspiring against BS Yediyurappa and removing him from the Chief Minister’s chair.

“BS Yediyurappa, who built the BJP in the state, was sent to jail and removed from the post of Chief Minister by whose conspiracy? Aren’t you into it?”, Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly questioned Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.
Siddaramaiah, in a series of tweets, came down heavily against Pralhad Joshi.

Joshi had criticised the Siddaramaiah birthday event which has been described by BJP as “Siddaramothsava” organized by Congress leaders.

Siddaramaiah tweeted, “BS Yediyurappa who built the party with blood and sweat for four decades. Who cornered Yadiyurappa? Whose conspiracy sent him to jail and removed him from the post of Chief Minister when the party was in power? Aren’t you involved? BS Yediyurappa wanted to be the chief minister and who performed Operation Kamala on him? Who finally removed him from the post of Chief Minister?” Siddaramaiah attacked Prahald Joshi.

“MLA Basavanagowda Patil Yatnal is pouring accusations against former Chief Minister @BSYBJP and Vijayendra every day due to whose connivance? Whose hands are preventing action against MLAs who speak disparagingly against a senior party leader @JoshiPralhad?”, he asked in tweets.

“Who is happy that the bench is standing tall to prevent former chief minister @BSYBJP

‘s son Vijayendra from getting a ministerial position? Who is involved in that joy? Whose plot is leaking his name in scams @JoshiPralhad?” he added in another tweet.

Speaking about the Lingayats in Karnataka, he said, “By wooing the Lingayats and the lords of the Lingayat Math, who formed the party and now they are cornering each and every Lingayat in the party? Former Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar and MLA Arvind Bellada, who was dreaming of the post of Chief Minister, who poured water to his desire @JoshiPralhad?

“The BJP, which had three chief ministers in its first tenure, deposed the first and made a second chief minister by the end of the year of the second term. It is funny that you talk about Congress dissension when you are going to drop the second one and install the third one @JoshiPralhad,” added Siddaramaiah.

“It is not written on your forehead to gain a majority and come to power by virtue of achievement. Whatever you say, Operation Kamal is a dirty business,” tweeted the Congress leader.

Amid the ongoing crisis in the Goa unit, Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that the BJP is offering Rs 50 crores for each MLA.

The remarks of the Congress leader came a day after rumours of a split in Goa Congress surfaced. Congress removed party MLA Michael Lobo as the Leader of the Opposition in the Goa Assembly alleging that he along with Digambar Kamat hatched a conspiracy to engineer defections in “total coordination” with the BJP.”

By offering Rs 50 Crores for each MLA…they (BJP) are not believing in democracy. Not only in Goa, everywhere they do Operation Kamala. They will offer money, they will purchase MLAs,” said Siddaramaiah.

Karnataka Congress MLA MB Patil said that the trading of MLAs has “spoiled the system” of the country.

“CT Ravi’s statement is undemocratic…Buying MLAs for Rs 40 Crores. This has spoiled the system of our country, we’re ashamed that such things happen in our country,” Patil said. (ANI)
