Big Blow To Cong, Anand Resigns From PCC Committee Post

Congress party faces another big blow as veteran leader Anand Sharma on Sunday resigned from the post of steering committee chairman for the Himachal Pradesh assembly polls.

He has written a letter to Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and submitted his resignation from the post.
He was feeling ignored and sidelined for the decisions regarding the Himachal Pradesh assembly polls, sources close to Anand Sharma said, adding that he will continue to work as a CWC member and another post for the party.

This came days before the
Himachal Pradesh
state assembly elections.

This is the second blow for Congress in recent days as before this Gulam Nabi Azad resigned as the campaign commit chairman after writing a three-page note to Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi.

According to sources, Azad, in his resignation letter had written that some other important person should be given the post of campaign committee chairman as he was upset due to some appointments in the PCC and other committees for the Jammu and Kashmir polls.

However, some people say that Azad refused to assume the post of Campaign Committee chairman of Jammu and Kashmir due to health reasons.

The recent developments have again rung the bell for the Congress Party that the G23 camp — members who are critical of the party — may again become a problem.

For the record, Congress on Tuesday constituted the campaign committee, political affairs committee, coordination committee, manifesto committee, publicity and publication committee, disciplinary committee and Pradesh election committee for Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)

Five Things That Happened Last Week (and what to make of them)

At 75, India is still a young nation

The high point of the past week in India was the celebration on 15 August of the 75th anniversary of the nation’s Independence. While the highlight of the day was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation from Delhi’s historic Red Fort, equally notable was the success of the nationwide campaign, Har Ghar Tiranga, which urged all Indians to hoist the national flag as a symbol of patriotism.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi, touched upon various aspects of the nation’s journey since it struggled to fight off the shackles of colonialism. He spoke about the invaluable contributions of freedom fighters and revolutionaries. He urged Indians to shake off the hangover of colonialism by not seeking approval from foreign powers but by judging things in the light of India’s own heritage and traditions. He spoke about empowering women, emphasised the need for achieving self-reliance; and emerging as a developed nation.

But the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence has another interesting aspect to it. For the first time in decades, India’s most prominent politicians, regardless of their ideology, beliefs or party colours, are those who have been born after 1947 when India achieved Independence. Take Prime Minister Modi himself. He was born in 1950, three years after Independence. Or India’s newly-elected President, Droupadi Murmu. She was born even later in 1958, which makes her 64.

Glance across the spectrum of India’s political parties, and you will come across leaders who are all younger than independent India. In Bihar, where he recently created a kerfuffle by exiting the National Democratic Alliance, chief minister Nitish Kumar is 71. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is 52 and was born 23 years after Independence. His mother, Sonia Gandhi, president of the Congress party, though is probably among the few living Indian political leaders of consequence who is pre-Independence born. She was born in December 1946.

If you look elsewhere, Bahujan Samaj Party’s leader Mayawati, born in 1956, is 66; the feisty chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is even younger at 59; and Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is only 54.

As we all know, India is a young nation and it  has the largest youth population in the world. Over half of India’s population of around 1.4 billion is under 30. And as the age of India’s politicians begins to reflect that aspect of the nation’s demography, the average age of India’s prominent leaders will, unsurprisingly, also decline.

Another young politician creates ripples

Speaking of young politicians, in 2019 when Finland’s Sanna Marin became prime minister of her country (population: a little over 5.5 million), she was 34. She will turn 37 this November. Marin has quite a few achievements to her credit. Prominent among these is her much-lauded efforts to lead her government’s efforts during the Corona pandemic, which broke shortly after she had taken charge. Finland’s efforts to control the spread of the pandemic and gear up its healthcare infrastructure to minimise fatalities has won plaudits from around the world.

However, Marin now finds herself in the eye of a curious controversy. Last week a privately recorded video was leaked on social media that showed the young prime minister at a party with revellers, dancing and living it up. In the video, Marin and “her friends”, which included some Finnish celebrities, were seen drinking, dancing and singing. This has created a controversy in the small Nordic nation with many people questioning the propriety of a nation’s leader to party like a teenager and what example it sets for the nation’s citizens. Marin defended herself by saying it was a private party where she had not indulged in any illegal activities but had drunk alcohol moderately and danced, none of which is socially considered to be taboo.

Some observers pointed out that in the video, some people in the background were heard to refer to drugs such as cocaine. As a response, Marin has said she has never taken drugs and also stated that she had voluntarily taken a drug test after the controversy erupted last week.

The thing is that cultures differ. Not long ago, Marin was in yet another controversy when she had gone out clubbing with her husband and omitted to take her official cell phone with her. The cell phone in question had received messages about how she might have been exposed to people infected with the Coronavirus. Marin had then apologised and the controversy blew over. More recently, she was portrayed in social media posts, fashionably dressed and attending music festivals in Finland.

None of this, in Finnish culture, is anything that raises eyebrows. A public person’s private persona is respected and as long as there is nothing that can be considered as an illegal activity, no one really bothers about it.

The problem, however, is that when you are the prime minister of a country, you have an international image and status. Finland is in the process of joining NATO. The country shares a 1340-km border with Russia, which is in the midst of a prolonged conflict in Ukraine. Domestically, Finland, as are many other countries, is battling with rising costs of living, inflation, and economic hurdles. In that context, does it behove the Finnish prime minister, however young she might be, to be seen in videos partying like a high-schooler?

Wait, are the Chinese watching?

Yes, they probably are. Last week, the Indian authorities were concerned that a Chinese research and space-tracking vessel was docked in Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port and this could be the beginning of a concerted move by China to regularly use Sri Lanka as a base for surveillance in the region.

For all practical purposes, Hambantota is Chinese owned. It was built by China Merchants Port, a conglomerate headquartered in Hong Kong, and it owns 70% of the port’s equity capital. China has free access to the port. As is well known, China also has bases for “logistics” in the Cape of Horn in Africa, and easy access to the Karachi and Gwadar ports in Pakistan. China has a String of Pearls strategy, which is a network of military and commercial facilities and relationships along its sea lines. Ostensibly, this is a strategy to protect its trade interests.

India, obviously, sees this as a concern. With China building more bases in the Indian Ocean region, strategically it could be in a position to threaten India. What has especially bothered India is that the Sri Lankan port is freely used by China, perhaps for surveillance and non-commercial purposes, even though India (and not China) has come to the aid of the island nation with finance and aid when it recently faced acute economic crises.

CBI targets Delhi’s deputy CM

Drama is a de rigueur when it comes to Indian politics. On the same day that the New York Times carried a prominent article on how the Delhi government, under Manish Sisodia, its deputy chief minister who also oversees the education ministry, has achieved remarkable improvement in government-run schools, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided Sisodia’s residence.

The raids were in connection with allegations that the city-state’s new liquor policy had violated rules and had irregularities.

The Delhi government, run by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Union government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have always had a confrontational relationship. Even as the raids and charges flew, BJP leaders accused the Delhi government of planting favourable stories in the foreign media by using money spun from a corrupt liquor policy.

Nine months after Delhi allowed private players to sell liquor in the state, the government withdrew the policy and reinstated the old system where only government agencies could sell liquor at the retail level. The reason for backtracking was partly economic. The private players faced huge licensing fees and price-gouging. The BJP has alleged that in the process of introducing a new policy and then withdrawing it, the Delhi government has made huge financial gains. An allegation that is yet unproved.

But what is most bizarre is the charge that the Delhi government has used these gains to enable planting favourable stories in international media! The drama goes on.

Japan wants people to drink more

One of the criticisms against the Delhi government’s ill-fated liquor policy was that it would encourage alcoholism because allowing private players would mean more competition and perhaps lower prices. In Indian culture, by and large, alcohol has a social stigma attached to it.

Apparently, not so in Japan. The Japanese government is worried that young people are not drinking enough. For one, the impact of Covid has meant fewer people go to bars and other drinking establishments. Moreover, Japan is an ageing country demographically and this means there are more old people in Japanese society than there are young. And an old, retired population is unlikely to spend much on alcohol. This has affected the beleaguered Japanese economy’s tax revenues.

So Japan has launched a campaign that has a competition inviting the public to suggest ways and means of making its citizens drink more alcohol. Different strokes, as they say, for different folks!

Govt Refutes Reports, No Plan To Import Wheat

India has no plan to import wheat as it has ample stocks to meet the domestic requirements, Department of Food & Public Distribution on Sunday clarified after a media report said India was likely to start importing the staple foodgrain.

“There is no such plan to import wheat into India. The country has sufficient stocks to meet our domestic requirements and FCI has enough stock for pubic distribution,” the department said on Twitter responding to the news item.
Earlier this year, multiple rounds of heat waves in several wheat-growing regions in India ahead of the rabi harvest affected some wheat crops.

As per the fourth advance estimate of production of major agricultural crops released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, production of wheat during 2021-22 is estimated at 106.84 million tonnes, as against the reported earlier estimate of 111 million tonnes.

As the tensions between Russia and Ukraine turned into a full-blown war, export demand for wheat got a boost, resulting in lifetime high prices of the staple foodgrain in the local mandis. Heat wave-led crop loss too led to price rises. Notably, both the countries involved in the conflict — Ukraine and Russia — are two major suppliers of wheat.

In Indore in Madhya Pradesh, which is considered one of the key mandis, wheat prices touched as high as Rs 2,400-2,500 per 100 kg, against Rs 2,000-2,100 until the conflict in Ukraine broke out. Prices of wheat usually remain on the lower side during this time of the year as freshly harvested rabi crops make their way into the physical markets or mandis.

Still, the current wheat price in India is well above the Centre’s assured Minimum Support Price of Rs 2,015 per 100 kg, which in itself is a rare phenomenon. Currently, wheat is trading a little below Rs 2,400 per 100 kg in Indore. In other markets too, wheat prices have somewhat softened.

However, wholesale prices of wheat in the domestic mandis have lately managed to fall from their lifetime highs and have stabilized as the central government timely brought in a slew of policy interventions on the exports of the foodgrain.

For the record, to manage the overall food security of the country as well as meet the needs of the neighbouring and other vulnerable countries, India amended the export policy of wheat by putting its export under the “prohibited” category.

The government while banning exports of wheat had stated that the move was made with the purpose to manage the overall food security of the country as well as meeting the needs of the neighbouring and other vulnerable countries.

The Indian government did not stop at just restricting exports of wheat.

After a ban on exports of wheat grain, the Centre then put restrictions on the exports of wheat flour (atta) exports and other related products like maida, semolina (rava/sirgi), wholemeal atta and resultant atta.

During the recent Parliament session, the government said that there was no shortage of wheat stock in the central pool.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha during the recent Parliament session, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said: “As on 01.07.2022, the actual stock of wheat is 285.10 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) against the Buffer norm of 275.80 LMT.”

In reply to another question on whether it is true that wheat procurement from farmers has fallen since there was a rise in private procurement who bought wheat directly from farmers, the minister agreed with it.

“The procurement of wheat has fallen due to higher purchase of wheat by traders as the market price of wheat had shot up due to prevailing international geopolitical situation,” the Union minister said.

“Moreover, if the farmer gets better price in comparison to MSP, they are free to sell their produce in the open market.”

Wheat prices rising above MSP essentially means the Centre had to purchase lesser quantities under the price guarantee scheme as the farmers are already getting higher prices for their produce from the private buyers. (ANI)

BJP Takes Jibe At Sisodia’s Comment On LOC Against Him

Taking a jibe at Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia after he reacted to the Look Out Circular issued in his name by the Central Bureau of Investigation, BJP’s Parvesh Verma alleged that Sisodia was trying to mislead the public.

“Look Out Circular does not mean that the police is searching for you, but it means that you cannot leave the country,” Verma said mentioning that it is the “habit of AAP” to mislead the people.
“It (LOC) means to prevent you from escaping the country just like your partner-in-crime Vijay Nayyar who collects money after the policies are framed while sitting in the United States,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Sisodia had tweeted attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “All the raids issued by you have failed, the foul play of not even a single penny has been found. Now, you have issued a Look Out Circular that Manish Sisodia is absconding, what is this gimmick, Modi Ji? I am openly roaming in Delhi, tell me where do I need to come?”

Meanwhile, the former president of the BJP Delhi Manoj Tiwari remarked on Sisodia’s claims that the public would give a LOC to BJP in 2024.

He said, “I think right now Manish Sisodia should talk about the huge scams of liquor that are worth crores, the rest of the things are being watched by Delhi as well as the country.”

He also alleged that the AAP is not giving justified answers to the questions asked. “The AAP is talking about everything except the liquor policy which is been questioned as no eyebrows are raised on any education, health or foreign policy.

“I believe that who is clear cannot be defamed. If Kejriwal and Sisodia are true, no one can harm them and if they are guilty, no one can even spare them,” he added.

“It is not a casual thing to get a LOC issued. LOC means that the allegations that are put upon you ‘are very serious’ and there is a possibility that the accused would leave the country. This is a natural procedure of investigations as agencies are more aware now,” the former Delhi BJP chief said.

“LOC is a regular procedure, in any major crime, such an action is taken. There is no need to panic as much as Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal are panicking. Roaming in Delhi is not forbidden.”

“The LOC is not issued against Sisodia only but several others also so that they do not escape the country without informing the court,” he mentioned.

However, the CBI sources have clarified that no LOC has been issued against the excise policy scam accused as of now as its processing is currently underway. (ANI)

Pak Hospital Forms 4-Member Panel To Decide On Gill’s Health

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has constituted a four-member medical board to determine Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shahbaz Gill’s health condition and recommend whether or not he should be discharged.

Gill, who was arrested by the police on August 9 after he made controversial remarks against the Pakistan Army on television that were deemed as “highly hateful and seditious” by the country’s media authority, is being treated at PIMS, The Express Tribune reported.
He was admitted to the hospital after complaining about a chest infection, body pain and sore throat.

The doctors at PIMS said Gill was being administered antibiotics for his chest infection. They added that the PTI leader’s blood pressure, sugar and pulse were recorded in a normal range. The doctors have decided to make him undergo a CT pulmonary angiography to examine his lungs.

Gill was provided with all the facilities like AC, TV, sofa and food, as per Geo News citing the doctors.

Head of Medicine Department Associate Professor Shafaat Rasool will head the medical board. The other members are General Surgeon Atif Inaam Shami, pulmonologist Dr Zia, and Medical ICU’s Assistant Professor Dr Salman.

In another development, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary on Saturday called for the formation of an independent panel to investigate Gill’s torture allegations, reported The Express Tribune.

In a tweet, the former information minister suggested the names of PTI’s Shireen Mazari, PPP Senator Mustafa Khokar and PML-N’s Khawaja Saad Rafique to probe into the custodial torture claims.

“In my personal opinion, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Dr Shireen Mazari should form a panel to investigate the torture being inflicted on Shahbaz Gill, and to bring those involved in it to the forefront,” he wrote.

“This way, there would be no accusations of the panel being pro-PTI,” he added.

Meanwhile, the information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb released videos of Gill showing that the PTI leader is “perfectly fine” and no signs of torture can be seen on Imran Khan’s chief of staff.

The Information Minister on Saturday castigated PTI chief Imran Khan and party members for spreading “fake propaganda” on media regarding Shahbaz Gill.

Marriyum said that for the last three days “false propaganda” is being spread on social media as “fake” videos of Gill are being spread on all media platforms regarding him being tortured during his imprisonment, reported Geo TV.

The information minister said that an inquiry is being held regarding this matter and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah “will soon present evidence in front of everybody.”

However, she hinted that all “dots of the story connect to Khan”; reiterating that the PTI chief wanted to divert attention from the reality “which is against him.” (ANI)
