Russian MiG-31 Fighter Jets Violate Finnish Airspace

Two Russian MiG-31 fighter jets reportedly violated the Finnish airspace near the coastal city of Porvoo on the Gulf of Finland on Thursday.

The incident came as Finland seeks NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The incident of suspected violation happened at 06:40 GMT on Thursday and the jets were westbound, the defence ministry’s communications chief Kristian Vakkuri said, adding the aircraft were in Finnish airspace for two minutes, Al Jazeera reported.

“The depth of the suspected violation into Finnish airspace was one kilometre,” Vakkuri said.

In order to tackle the suspected violation, the Finnish air force sent up “an operational flight mission” and identified the MiG-31 jets.

The Border Guard launched an investigation into the violation, reported Al Jazeera.

Finland, which shares a 1,300-km eastern border with Russia, broke decades of military non-alignment by seeking membership in the North Atlantic alliance in May.

Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO would mark one of the biggest shifts in European security in decades and further increase Russia’s strategic isolation.

According to a NATO list, seven-member countries are yet to give a nod to the new double-entry: the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey, according to Al Jazeera.

Earlier, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO) 30 allies signed accession protocols for Sweden and Finland, kickstarting the process to admit the two Nordic countries into the alliance.

NATO’s 30 members formally invited Finland and Sweden to join their alliance at the NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, just seven weeks after both countries handed their applications in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In the first instance, the accession process was blocked by Turkey, a NATO member that raised concerns over the fight against terrorism, however, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Finland and Sweden, Turkey lifted its veto ahead of the NATO Madrid summit. (ANI)

Several false cases were lodged against him. Raids were conducted on me as well, on Satyendar Jain, on Kailash Gehlot – but nothing was found. They won’t get anything even now.”
Exuding confidence in his leaders the chief minister also stressed that there’s nothing to be scared about.

“CBI is doing its work, there is no need to be scared. We should let CBI do its work, they have an order from the top to hassle us. Obstacles will come but work won’t stop,” said Kejriwal.

He also outlined that it takes ages to gain international applause however, Sisodia’s picture in America’s biggest newspaper itself a proof of his revolutionary work.

‘What Rushdie or Nupur Did Is Shameful… So Is Violence Against Them’

Mufti Manzur Ziyaee, an Islamic scholar in Mumbai, says Muslims should condemn all acts of hatred and violence in equal terms

The recent violent attack on Salman Rushdie in the US has become a major talking point. The writer had made disparaging remarks against Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) in his book The Satanic Verses. Closer home, we have seen calls for violence against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over similar charges. I see both cases as different sides of the same coin. Both these persons willfully and knowingly denigrated the revered Prophet (SAWS) through their acts, which must be condemned.

However, I maintain that any act or call of violence against them is also equally condemnable. No one has the right to issue a Fatwa, or physically harm them. Such form of violence has no place in either a civil society or in Islam. Let me explain.

Except for the matters related to family, marriage and personal relations, Islamic law does not hold in a country that has an established constitution. Islam never allows anyone to take the law of the land in their hands. Penal actions must fall under the purview of the constitutional order.

Second, a Fatwa is not a Huqm (decree), it is merely a Raay, an opinion, which can only be offered by a Mufti, a legal expert in Islam. The confusion over such matters among Muslims and non-Muslims must be cleared by our leaders and opinion makers. The socio-cultural fabric of this country is a valuable asset and lately there have been attempts to harm it. Religious and political leaders must push back such vested interests.

Muslims need to condemn each and every act of hatred with equal force. Be it lynching of innocents in India or an attack on a writer in the US, killings in Udaipur and Amaravati or elsewhere. Only when each such act is equally condemned, will we have the moral right to demand justice and representation.

From being born in Bihar’s Munger district, raised and educated in Kolkata, I have travelled nearly half the world and worked continuously for harmony and peace through various fora. In this long journey, from what I learnt and experienced, I can say that Indian culture and Constitution are this country’s real strength; we have to build the nation on these two foundations.

The country is currently passing through a challenging phase. There is little doubt that Muslims have faced injustices; their youth have been put behind bars under TADA and UAPA over political vendetta by all parties. But instead of heeding to hate calls, Muslims must educate themselves and hold faith in the Constitution given to us by Babasaheb Ambedkar. They must strive for justice and representation in public life. Hatred will only take us back to medieval era.

Excise Policy: CBI Raids 7 States; Searches 21 Locations In Delhi-NCR

Officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrived at the residence of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia as part of the investigative agency’s raids at 21 places across Delhi and the National Capital Region.

The raids are being conducted in seven states of the country in connection with the CBI’s investigation into the alleged irregularities in formulation and execution of the Delhi Excise Policy brought in November 2021. The CBI has registered an FIR in this connection.
Sisodia took to Twitter to post: “CBI has arrived. We are honest, building a future for lakhs of children. Unfortunate that in this country, whoever does good work is hassled just like this, that is why our country is still not number-1.”

“I extend my welcome to the CBI. I will cooperate with the investigation so that the truth comes out at the earliest. Till now many cases have been filed against me but nothing has come out. Nothing will come out of it either. My work cannot be stopped for a good education in the country,” Sisodia tweeted.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted his support for Sisodia saying that nothing will come out of this raid and many such happened in past. “I welcome CBI. We will cooperate fully. There have been many such probes, raids in past. Nothing came out. Nothing will come out this time too,” Kejriwal tweeted.

A top CBI official said: “Raids are going on at 21 places in Delhi and NCR, including the residence of Manish Sisodia and premises of four public servants in the Excise Policy case.”

Among the premises raided include those of the former Excise Commissioner of Delhi Arava Gopi Krishna during whose tenure the revamped Excise policy was approved.

Earlier in July, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena had recommended a CBI probe into Delhi’s revamped excise policy. He approved the suspension of 11 officials over “lapses” in the implementation of the Excise Policy 2021-22.

The suspended officials included Gopikrishna and deputy excise commissioner Anand Kumar Tiwari.

Sisoida today tweeted that allegations made against him and the Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain were not true.

“These people are troubled by the excellent work of Delhi’s education and health. That is why the health minister and the education minister of Delhi are on the radar so that the good work of education and health can be stopped,” Sisodia wrote.

Soon after the CBI arrived at Sisodia’s residence, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and said that they (AAP) will give full cooperation to the investigations.

“CBI is welcome. We will give full cooperation. Searches took place earlier too, but nothing was found. Nothing will be found now too,” Kejriwal tweeted mentioning that the CBI has raided Sisodia’s residence on the day when the picture of the Delhi Model and Sisodia appeared on the front page of America’s biggest newspaper- New York Times.

Earlier on August 6, former Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal was accused by Deputy CM Manish Sisodia of changing his stand on the issue of opening liquor shops in unauthorized areas of Delhi. (ANI)

CBI Summons Sisodia

Sisodia’s Residence Raided In Connection With Liquor Policy

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday morning conducted searches at the residence of the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia in connection with an alleged scam in the recently withdrawn excise policy of the Aam Aadmi Party government.

Raids were conducted at 21 places in Delhi-NCR including the residence of Manish Sisodia and the premises of four public servants, according to a CBI official. The official said that raids were conducted in locations across 7 states.
“CBI has arrived,” Sisodia confirmed through a tweet, adding “We are honest, building a future for lakhs of children. Unfortunate that in this country, whoever does good work is hassled just like this, that is why our country is still not number-1.”

What exactly is the controversy around the Delhi’s Excise policy?

A report on July 8 by Delhi’s Chief Secretary established prima facie violations of GNCTD Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR) 1993, Delhi Excise Act 2009 and Delhi Excise Rules 2010.

The Chief Secretary’s report indicated substantively of financial quid pro quo at the top political level and that the Delhi Excise Policy was implemented with the sole aim of benefitting private liquor barons for financial benefits to individuals at the highest rungs of the government leading up to Manish Sisodia.

Sisodia, who is in charge of the excise department, is under the scanner for alleged deliberate and gross procedural lapses which provided undue benefits to the tender process for liquor licensees for the year 2021-22.

Sisodia is believed to have executed decisions in violation of the statutory provisions of the Excise Policy, which could have huge financial implications. Such “undue financial favours” to the liquor licensees after the deadline for awarding tenders caused huge losses to the exchequer, sources earlier claimed.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor recommends CBI probe:

Taking into account the Chief Secretary’s report, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had recommended a CBI investigation into the matter.

The LG office said that Sisodia also extended financial favours to the liquor licensees much after the tenders had been awarded and thus caused huge losses to the exchequer.

The excise policy was passed in chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Cabinet in the middle of the deadly Delta Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

However, the Delhi government’s version is that the policy was formulated to ensure the generation of optimum revenue, and eradicate the sale of spurious liquor or non-duty paid liquor in Delhi, besides improving user experience.

Following LG’s recommendation, the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Delhi Police’s Economic Offence Wing (EOW)issued a notice to Delhi’s Excise Commissioner asking him to provide all documents relating to the award of liquor licenses under the new excise policy.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, EOW had sought the date of floating of tenders for grant of liquor license under the new policy, date of grant of a license, and application forms of all successful applicants.

The procedures that were followed to check monopolies and cartels of successful applicants granted liquor license was also sought.

“Whether any SOP was prepared to check monopolies and cartels of successful applicants granted liquor license under New Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. If yes, please provide the relevant SOP,” it had asked.

Further, it sought whether the Delhi Excise Department has issued any show cause notice for cancellation of the license granted to any applicant or cancelled license under the new excise policy.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s reaction after today’s raids:

“CBI is welcome. We will give full cooperation. Searches/raids took place earlier too, but nothing was found. Nothing will be found now too,” Kejriwal tweeted mentioning that the CBI has raided his deputy’s residence on the day when the picture of the ‘Delhi Model’ appeared on the front page of America’s biggest newspaper- the New York Times.

Earlier too, Kejriwal rubbished the allegations made against his deputy and termed the matter to be a false case and alleged that the central government could not bear to see the expansion of the Aam-Aadmi Party (AAP).

“Whole case is false. I know Sisodia for the past 22 years. He is honest. When he became minister, Delhi government schools were in poor condition. He worked day and night to bring them up to a level where a judge’s child and a rickshaw driver’s child sit together to study,” Kejriwal had said.

The central government, Kejriwal said, has levelled several allegations against our people as the Aam Aadmi Party has been growing since its win in Punjab.

“They cannot bear to see us rise to a national level and thus are resorting to such measures. But nothing will stop us,” he said adding that he is neither “scared of jails, nor scared of the noose.” (ANI)

Raghav Chadha Calls Out BJP’s CBI Raid On Sisodia

As Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia came under the CBI’s radar and a raid was conducted at Sisodia’s residence, the leaders from the Aam Admi Party sounded on one track and so did AAP Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha who lauded the Delhi government led education revolution in the region and said that there were many such raids in the last eight years that resulted in nothing.

The AAP leader also hailed Sisodia’s efforts as the education minister and said that the Kejriwal-led government was attracting international acclaim.
“In today’s New York Times, there has been a lot of applause for the education revolution of the Kejriwal government. The same morning the BJP’s CBI raided the house of Manish Sisodia, the hero of that education revolution,” tweeted Chadha.

He further stated that the party is ready for cooperating during the raids.

“He got a lot of raids done in 8 years but got nothing. Keep doing it even further – we will fully cooperate in the investigation,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrived at the residence of the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, which he confirmed via a tweet on Friday morning.

Playing Hockey For India Has Given Me Everything: Salima Tete

In recent years, the Indian women’s hockey team has gone on to become one of the most memorable chapters in the country’s sporting history. Often considered underdogs at the highest level, the Indian women’s hockey team has consistently punched well above their weight category, giving the fans plenty to cheer about.

One of the youngest players in the Indian set-up, Salima Tete has been instrumental in the team’s success stories in the last half-decade or so, and of course, she hopes to be central to many more moments of glory.
Salima Tete, who was part of the Bronze medal-winning team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, looks back at her journey and more.

Salima, who is now back in her home town in Simdega in Jharkhand after a very long season, explained that ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham the team was focused on ensuring they don’t return without a success story to narrate.

“After we had a bad campaign at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Spain and Netherlands 2022, the team’s aim and our focus were very clear. We wanted to do well at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, there was no other option. We were sure we had to get a medal before returning back to India. Kuch na kuch karna hi hai,” Salima said.

A forceful presence in the Indian defensive line-up, Salima believes that the players’ meetings with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi are nothing short of motivating, and not just for someone like her.

“Meeting the PM was a very big thing for someone like me. All of us meeting the PM is a source of motivation so that we keep working hard and trying to achieve good results, and it is also very encouraging for the younger players coming through the system,” she said.

Rolling back the clock by a few years, Salima threw some light on her journey, speaking fondly about the likes of Asunta Lakra and Nikki Pradhan, both of whom have been influential mentors in her career.

“I came to hockey through the junior nationals and I had a role model in Asunta Lakra. I wanted to become like her, when I saw her playing, I felt that if she can do it, so can I. Nikki Pradhan’s a very important figure in my development and has always had enough time for me,” said the Indian hockey player.

“My family too is very supportive and they don’t think of the difficulties, my family, my parents and siblings are very supportive. The outlook for them is that we should do well irrespective of everything, we want to be the best version of ourselves,” Salima recollected.

Having learnt to play the sport on grass grounds as a young kid, one of the biggest moments in Salima’s career so far has been the 2021 Tokyo Olympics campaign, where India finished fourth. While that has done a lot for the athlete, Salima says it’s ensured that her village has better training facilities and that it is no more tucked away from the glare of the spotlight.

“Before the Tokyo Olympics, no one knew about our village and after I came back, the focus on our native place increased a lot. We have people visiting us from different places, people recognising the village I come from. It is really heart-warming. Even my family, feel very good when people come to visit. The whole atmosphere has changed and it makes me very happy,” Tete said.

“Playing for India has really changed my life a lot, it has given me everything I could have asked for. I just want to keep performing for the country and winning more matches,” she added. (ANI)
