Army Recruitment Rally For ‘Agniveers’ Begins In Haryana’s Hisar

The recruitment rally for the ‘Agniveers’ began in Haryana’s Hisar on Sunday, according to an official.

“This is our third day of the recruitment rally covering four districts. We are conducting it on the occasion of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ which makes it even more significant. Four more rallies are underway in other cities,” said Major General Ranjan Mahajan while addressing the media.

Meanwhile, an aspirant, Gagan Tiwari welcomed the Agnipath scheme for the armed forces and said that he had started preparing two years ago.

“I had dreamt of joining the army since I was a child. I started preparing two years ago. There are adequate arrangements for food and water here. The ‘Agniveer’ is a welcome scheme,” he said.

The first-ever examination for the recruitment in Indian Air Force through the new ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme began across the country on July 24 morning amid tight police security.

The Union Cabinet on June 14 approved a recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the three services of the Armed Forces called Agnipath and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers.

The Agnipath scheme allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The Agnipath Scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces.

‘Agnipath’ is a pan India merit-based recruitment scheme for enrolling soldiers, airmen and sailors. The scheme provides an opportunity for youth to serve in the regular cadre of the armed forces. All those recruited under the ‘Agnipath’ scheme will be called ‘Agniveers’.

‘Agniveers’ will be enrolled for a service duration of 4 years including the training period. After four years, only 25 per cent of the Agniveers will be retained or re-enlisted in the regular cadre based on merit, willingness and medical fitness.

The Agnipath scheme has been brought to strengthen India’s security. The ‘Agniveers’ will be given a good pay package and an exit retirement package after a service of four years.

The first four years, served under a contract, are not likely to be taken into consideration for the fixation of the final pensionary benefits.

The other 75 per cent ‘Agniveers’ will be demobilized, with an exit or “Seva Nidhi” package of Rs 11-12 lakh, partly funded by their monthly contributions, as well as skill certificates and bank loans for help in their second careers. (ANI)

Five Things That Happened Last Week (and what to make of them)

Tricolour in every home is a good campaign

In the majority of nations around the world, the national flag is an object of pride that is revered, adored, and held with respect. In large democracies such as the USA, the national flag can be displayed and adorned by citizens in almost any way they want to. Sometimes this has led to controversy. There have been instances where the flag has been used in clothing (such as in bikinis or T-shirts) or in art form that have been construed as being disrespectful.

But then, the right to freedom of expression in American society can lead to ludicrous interpretations of what you can do or say and get away with. In most nations, however, the flag is treated with reverence. In many European nations, the national flag is hoisted multiple times during a year: to celebrate events that can range from religious events to birth anniversaries of national icons and other momentous historical events.

In India, till relatively recently (2002, to be precise), there were restrictions on how the national flag could be hoisted and by whom as well as even the material that it could be made of. The new Flag Code of India did away with it. Now there are no restrictions on members of the general public or institutions from hoisting the national flag as long as it is not perceived to be desecrated or disrespected in any manner.

Recently, under the aegis of the central government and espoused by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has launched a campaign to mark the 75th anniversary of the country’s Independence. Under the campaign citizens have been urged to hoist the national flag at their homes in the run-up to Independence Day on August 15. The campaign, entitled Har Ghar Tiranga, is aimed at invoking the spirit of patriotism among Indians. The effort should be lauded.

In recent times, Indian society has become divisive and extremely polarised. The federal structure of governance in India means that there are two levels of government: one at the central level and the other at the level of the states. The uniqueness of the Indian federal model is the extremely diverse nature of its population and the regional disparities. Language, customs, clothing, food, culture and so many other things are so different between regions that each state in India could easily be considered as a different country.

Then, there is the diversity of religion. While Hindus make up 1.094 billion of the 1.4 billion Indians, if you take the minority communities, in absolute numbers their population is huge. For instance, there are an estimated 204 million Muslims in India. Just for contextual purposes, consider that Russia’s population is 144 million; Germany’s 83.2million; and the UK’s 67.2 million. The fact that the once-latent Hindu majoritarianism has been fanned up of late to become increasingly overt has further sharpened the divisiveness in Indian society.

In that context, a campaign to revere, celebrate, and respect Indian Tiranga should be welcomed. It could be one way of uniting and bringing together a diverse, multicultural, and often conflicting population. Yes, you could say that it is only symbolic to hoist the tricolour at home but the spirit of patriotism can be one that brings together a sharply diverse society.

A heinous attack on Salman Rushdie

The India-born author Salman Rushdie, 75, was stabbed during an event in New York state last week during an event and had to be hospitalised. Rushdie’s agent said he was on a ventilator and wasn’t able to speak. The author could even lose an eye.

Ever since Rushdie wrote The Satanic Verses, published in 1988, he has been facing death threats from Islamic fundamentalists. It began with the Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini placing a fatwa on him calling for his assassination. Rushdie’s book had portrayed the Prophet Mohammed in a fictionalised version and his interpretation of the Koran had incensed Islamic communities.

Following the fatwa and threat to his life, Rushdie had to spend years in hiding and was granted protection by authorities in the UK and the US.
Last week, a 24-year-old man, identified as Hadi Matar, stabbed Rushdie as he was about to begin a lecture at a literary event. Matar was arrested. Rushdie is still in hospital and has suffered injuries to his neck and abdomen.

The enigma of Nitish Kumar

If you look at the career of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, two things can emerge. First, is his longevity in that office. He first became chief minister of the state in 2000 for a short while. Then, he held the office between 2005 and 2014. And, following the elections in 2015, he has been chief minister of the state since that year.

The second thing to note about Nitish Kumar is his quick political crossovers. Since 2003, Kumar has been leading the Janata Dal (United). But it is his changing alignments that are notable. Between 2003 and 2013, Kumar aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Then he left the alliance and opposed it till 2017 when he again rejoined it. Now, in 2022, he has decided to quit the NDA and join the Mahagathbandhan, an alliance of opposition parties that include Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), Indian National Congress (INC), and Left parties including Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation-CPIML(Liberation) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM).

As leader of the Mahagathbandhan, which is in opposition to the NDA, Kumar continues as the chief minister of Bihar and the RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav is the deputy chief minister. Incidentally, RJD was Kumar’s arch rival only till recently.

The political implication of Kumar’s newest realignment is a bit complex. The next Bihar state assembly elections are scheduled for 2025 so that is not an immediate event. However, there is much speculation about whether Kumar’s recent decision to move away from the NDA is a precursor to a possible plan to pitch himself as a prime ministerial candidate against Narendra Modi when the parliamentary elections are held in 2024. Kumar’s camp denies this but with Kumar’s enigmatic political career, the speculation continues.

Why mandatory masks in Delhi is a good thing

Last week the Delhi government mandated that masks should be worn in public spaces by everyone once again asCovid cases began to rise in the city. It is a welcome move that ought to be adopted by the authorities in other populous Indian cities.

The several waves of the Covid pandemic that has hit India have revealed a behavioural pattern that is unmistakable. Every time Covid’s spread ebbs, people get back to their old ways, disregarding the precautions of masking or hand hygiene.

India’s population density, particularly in its large cities, does not afford its citizens the luxury of taking it easy every time the virus’ spread slows down. It is quite clear that the Covid virus is continuing to mutate and new variants are emerging constantly. According to esports, the current variant, albeit milder than the dreaded Delta variant, is the BA.2.75 strain. This strain is believed to be causing the ongoing surge in Covid cases in the National Capital Region (NCR).

In this context, the Delhi government’s move is one that should be emulated elsewhere.

Will China invade Taiwan? The answer is not unambiguous

The recent surge in Chinese fire drills and continuing incursions by fighter jets and warships into Taiwan’s neighbourhood have given rise to speculation over a possible invasion of Taiwan by China in the near future.

The ongoing tension escalated after the visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, speaker in the US House of Representatives. China does not recognise Taiwan and aggression towards the island nation has been continuing for years. But will the hostilities lead to an all-out military strike?

That question does not have an easy answer. For one, China has over the past couple of decades built up its military might like never before. Also, its economic strength is at a significantly high level, driven mainly by its manufacturing sector that dominates the globe.

However, will China risk triggering a worldwide conflict by attacking Taiwan? The consequences of doing that can have both geo-political and economic implications for China that may not be altogether desirable. Experts are divided on China’s next moves and the speculation continues.

India@75: Kashmir Gears Up For Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

As India celebrates 75 years of Independence – Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has planned a series of special events to mark the glorious occasion.

India is all set to commemorate its 75th Independence Day on August 15 this year with celebrations around the theme – ‘Nation First, Always First’.

However, in Kashmir, the occasion is also special because the UT and central authorities have been making zealous efforts to usher in a new era of development and harmony. After the abrogation of Article 370, strong efforts are being made to attract investment and boost employment in the region.

However, to foil inimical designs, security arrangements have also been beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on Monday.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha would preside over the main Independence Day function to be held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar.

The Central Reserve Police Force on Friday organised a massive walkathon rally in the Budgam area. The event was conducted under the aegis of the CRPF 181 battalion. The rally was arranged as part of the ongoing “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations saw numerous participants from across the region.

In a signal of changed ground realities, the families of two fugitive terrorists hoisted the Tricolour at their residences in Doda under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. “We always hoist the Tiranga on Independence day. My brother is in Pakistan. He was underage when he went. We want him to come back,” says a member of one of these families.

The Youth Services and Sports Department of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday organised a Tiranga Shikara rally at the Dal Lake in Srinagar.

‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is the campaign launched by the Government of India to encourage every citizen of our great nation to bring home the tricolour and hoist it with pride.

The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign’ under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav is a big hit in Jammu and Kashmir with a large number of people joining the celebrations to mark the 75 years of India’s Independence.

Various activities are being conducted by different departments and schools across the Kashmir Valley as part of this initiative.

Earlier on August 5, J-K LG Sinha flagged off ‘The Great India Run’ from the iconic Lal Chowk Srinagar, where the marathoners were supposed to cover a distance of more than 800 kilometres from Srinagar to New Delhi with the message of peace and national integration. This run was also dedicated to the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to mark ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

Meanwhile, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav is a big hit in Jammu and Kashmir with a large number of people joining the celebrations to mark the 75 years of India’s Independence.

The common citizens, politicians and soldiers are jointly campaigning to show patriotism toward the country.

In Kupwara, the councillor of Ward 4 Lateef Ahmad hoisted the National Flag at his residence to mark the celebrations.

People in the Kashmir Valley are willingly and enthusiastically hoisting flags at their buildings – be it homes, hotels or restaurants.

Women and young girls in the Baramulla District of North Kashmir volunteered to stitch Tiranga for the houses in far-flung villages of Trikanjan and Bernate in Boniyar Tehsil close to the Line of Control (LoC) rose to the occasion. Tiranga fluttering high in all houses close to LoC is a matter of pride and determination. (ANI)

Indian Students Will Soon Be Able To Resume Studies In China

Thousands of Indian students who had come back from China after the outbreak of COVID-19 may now soon get a chance to resume their education as the first batch comprising many such youngsters could soon leave for the neighbouring country, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong said on Saturday.

The governments of both countries are working in tandem to ensure that the students can complete their education.

“China welcomes Indian students. The first batch of Indian students to resume studies in China in the near future. Concerned departments of both countries are working together,” said Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to India while speaking to ANI.

Thousands of Indian medical students, stuck back home due to the COVID-19 visa restrictions, have been awaiting a return to China.

China in July said that the country has made progress on facilitating the return of Indian students and is working in tandem with relevant departments to see that the first batch of Indian students can come back to study in China at the earliest.

Indian students pursuing medicine from Chinese Universities are unable to return to China to attend classes due to COVID-19-induced restrictions.

“We have been working intensively for the return of foreign students to China, as you can see. Some foreign students have already returned to China to continue their studies. As for the return of Indian students, as we have said before, the relevant departments in China and India have been in contact and made progress on this. The responsible departments in both countries will stay in close communication and work for the early return of the first batch of Indian students,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin had said.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting stressed the need for expediting the process of return of Indian students to China to attend classes on an early date.

In order to facilitate the return of Indian students, Jaishankar met with Wang Yi on March 25.

Jaishankar in March had said he strongly took up with the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi the predicament of Indian students studying in China who haven’t been allowed to return to that country citing COVID-19 restrictions.

The External Minister hoped that China will take a non-discriminatory approach on the issue since it involves the future of many young people.”I also took up strongly the predicament of Indian students studying in China who haven’t been allowed to return citing COVID restrictions. We hope China will take a non-discriminatory approach since it involves the future of many young people,” he had said.

Jaishankar said the Chinese Foreign Minister had assured him that he would speak to relevant authorities on his return to China.”Minister Wang Yi assured me that he would speak to the relevant authorities on his return on this matter. He also recognised the particular concerns that medical students have in this difficult situation,” Jaishankar added.

Earlier in April, the Chinese side had expressed its willingness to consider facilitating the return of Indian students to China on a need-assessed basis, said the Indian Embassy in China. (ANI)

Telangana Minister Opens Fire From Police Gun At Public Rally

Telangana Minister of Prohibition and Excise, Srinivas Goud, landed into a controversy after he allegedly opened fire from a loaded police gun at a public rally on Saturday.

The video of the incident is shared across social media and it is going viral. Srinivas Goud participated in the Swatantra Bharat Vajrotsavam celebrations and the rally started from Zilla Parishad to Tank Bund.

The viral video shows that there was a panic situation as Srinivas Goud allegedly opened fire from a self-loaded rifle of a cop. He fired a bullet into the air. Netizens and the common people questioned him about how the Minister can open fire by taking the law and order under his control.

In view of these developments, Goud broke his silence on the controversy, He said that he fired a “rubber bullet” and all the speculations about him firing a real bullet is fake.

Goud further said to the reporters that he is a Sports Minister and a member of the All India Rifle Association which makes him eligible to use the weapon. The Minister further said that he is ready to submit his resignation if allegations against him are proved to be true.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the people of India to hoist the tricolour at their homes between August 13th and 15th to celebrate the 75th Independence Day.

In a tweet on July 22, PM Modi had said, “This year, when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, let us strengthen the Har Ghar Tiranga Movement. Hoist the Tricolour or display it in your homes between 13th and 15th August. This movement will deepen our connection with the national flag.”

Last month, Prime Minister Modi launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to encourage people to bring the Tiranga home and hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s independence. The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Culture said.

PM Modi on Friday shared pictures of people taking Tiranga rallies from all over India. Sharing a photo in which hundreds of people took out a Tiranga march, PM Modi said: “This is a great collective effort by the people of Visakhapatnam. I admire the enthusiasm towards #HarGharTiranga.” (ANI)

Sri Lanka Allows Chinese Spy Ship To Dock At Hambantota

Sri Lanka on Saturday granted permission to Chinese vessel Yuan Wang-5, widely believed to be a spy ship, to dock at its Hambantota port, local media reported.

According to a report by Times Online, the Sri Lankan government gave approval to the Yuan Wang-5 ship to dock at the port on Friday.

“Yuan Wang 5 will now berth at the Hambantota International Port on August 16, five days later than scheduled. It was originally due to arrive on August 11. This was delayed after India raised strong concerns citing national security,” the report said.

Earlier this week, Sri Lanka confirmed that it has communicated to China to defer the visit of the Chinese vessel Yuang Wang 5 to Hambantota port.

The Chinese vessel was scheduled to dock at Chinese-leased Hambantota port on August 11 for refuelling and leave on August 17.

“The Ministry has communicated to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Colombo to defer the visit of the said vessel to the Hambantota port,” the foreign ministry had said in the statement.

The Foreign Ministry had stated it wishes to reaffirm the enduring friendship and excellent relations between Sri Lanka and China which remain on a solid foundation, as reiterated most recently by the two Foreign Ministers Ali Sabry and Wang Yi at a bilateral meeting in Phnom Penh on August 4.

India had expressed its security concerns over the docking of the vessel at Hambantota as it was shown as a research vessel while the spy ship can map the ocean bed which is critical to anti-submarine operations of the Chinese Navy.

Designated as a research and survey vessel, Yuan Wang 5 was built in 2007 and has a carrying capacity of 11,000 tonnes.

During this significant visit to the key Sri Lankan port, it could conduct satellite research in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean region, prompting security concerns for India.

Hambantota port, located around 250 kms from Colombo was built with high-interest Chinese loans. The Sri Lankan government struggled to repay the debt they had taken from China following which the port was handed over to the Chinese on a 99-year lease. (ANI)

Omicron Variant BA 2.75 Is Dominant Covid Strain In Delhi

Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital Medical Director Dr Suresh Kumar on Saturday said that Omicron sub-variant BA 2.75 is the dominant variant in Delhi having been found in a majority of cases.

“We did a study where we wanted to know which sub-variant is having the highest transmission. We analysed data from 90 samples in August and found that more than half of the patients were infected with BA 2.75. It is the leading cause of transmission and it spreads faster,” Dr Kumar told ANI.

LNJP MD mentioned that usual symptoms are sore throat, running nose, low-grade fever, headache and body ache.

“We have also noticed viral pneumonia and low oxygen in some cases,” he added.

Dr Kumar highlighted that reinfection has also increased as BA 2.75 sub-variant can escape the immunity and can infect people who took the vaccine earlier.

“I would suggest people to take the third dose soon as due to prior vaccine, the severity of the disease can be reduced. Recovery time is usually 5-7 days,” he said.

Talking about the recent surge in COVID cases in Delhi, Kumar said, “Positivity in the national capital is around 15 percent and those who have chronic disease are getting hospitalised. Only 6 percent hospitalisation is there, the infection rate is high but hospitalisation is less if we compare with the earlier wave.”

India reported 15,815 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours with a daily case positivity rate of 4.36 percent, stated the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. The active caseload in the country now stands at 1,19,264 accounting for 0.27 percent of the total cases.

According to the Ministry, 20,018 COVID patients recovered in the last 24 hours. The total number of recovered patients from the disease in the country rose to 4,35,93,112. The recovery rate currently stands at 98.54 percent.

According to a bulletin by the Delhi Health Department on Friday, the national capital reported 10 COVID deaths and 2,136 new cases. There are currently 8,343 active COVID cases in the national capital. (ANI)
