Sania Congratulates Indian Contingent For Fine Performance

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza congratulated the country’s contingent for their magnificent performance at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

India finished 4th in the medal tally with 22 Gold, 15 Silver and 23 Bronze medals and with a total of 61 medals at the Commonwealth Games.
“What an incredible CWG it has been for us at Birmingham this year. Congratulations to the entire contingent, all the medal winners and their teams involved in making all these champions .. and in making India a champion the entire country is so proud of you. Jai Hind,” tweeted the tennis star.

India has delivered its fifth-best performance of all time in their Commonwealth Games history, with their best being a total of 101 medals when the games were held at home in 2010.

However, achieving 61 medals this time around holds a lot of significance since shooting, which is India’s most successful discipline historically with 135 medals, was not included in the games this time. The numbers could have been way higher had it been included.

The Indian contingent also saw some first-time medals like in lawn bowls and cricket. Notably, the women’s cricket team was sent as a part of the contingent. India lost to Australia by a narrow margin of nine runs in a thrilling final.

Also, the Indian Lawn Bowls team consisting of Rupa Rani Tirkey, Nayanmoni Saikia, Lovely Choubey and Pinki Singh created history by winning its first-ever medal in the sport, capturing Gold by defeating South Africa by 17-10 in the final of the women’s fours event. Men’s fours team also clinched a silver later.

India dominated contact and strength-based sports of weightlifting, wrestling and boxing. The country’s contingent won 12 medals in wrestling, its most successful sport in the 2022 edition of the multi-sport event. India captured medals in every category in which its stars wrestled. This includes six gold medals as well by Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Naveen.

India won 10 medals in weightlifting, including three golds by Mirabai Chanu, Achinta Sheuli and Jeremy Lalrinnunga.

Indian boxers won a total of seven medals in boxing. This includes gold by Amit Panghal, Nitu Ghangas and Nikhat Zareen.

In athletics, the nation’s athletes won a total of eight medals. It includes gold by Eldhose Paul in the men’s triple jump. Avinash Sable (silver in men’s 3000 m steeplechase), Annu Rani (bronze in women’s javelin throw), Murali Sreeshankar (silver in men’s long jump) were some other prominent medal winners.

India won quite a few medals in racquet sports as well. Seven medals came in table tennis, which includes four gold medals by Achanta Sharath Kamal in men’s singles, men’s team, para table tennis player Bhavina Patel and the mixed duo of Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula.

Badminton stars of India clinched six medals in the sport. PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen won gold in the men’s and women’s singles category while the men’s doubles team of Chirag Shetty and Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy also won gold.

India’s hockey teams also returned home with medals. The men’s team won silver while the women’s team is coming back home with a bronze.

The country also won three medals in judo, with Shushila Devi and Tulika Mann capturing silver medals and Vijay Kumar Yadav winning a bronze medal.

The Squash contingent also returned home with two bronze medals. Saurav Ghosal won one in men’s singles while the other in mixed doubles with Dipika Pallikal.

Also, para-powerlifter Sudhir captured India’s first gold in para powerlifting.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 came to an end with a stunning closing ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Monday. The Commonwealth Games flag was presented to the Governor of Victoria. The state of Victoria, Australia will be the next host of the Commonwealth Games in 2026. (ANI)

JD(U) MPs, MLAs To Meet On Tuesday Over Rift With BJP

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called for a meeting of JD-U MLAs and MPs on Tuesday at 11 am amid speculation of a rift with ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said JD-U party chief Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan on Monday.

Simultaneously, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has convened a meeting on Tuesday at 11 am to discuss political developments in Bihar.

Earlier on Monday, the Congress party also convened a meeting of its legislature party in Bihar to contemplate the evolving political scenario in the state.

The rumours of a possible spilt between JD-U and BJP escalated after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar skipped the NITI Aayog meeting.

While talking to the mediapersons in Patna, JD-U National President Lalan Singh said, “I read in the newspapers that RCP Singh has said that he was told by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that his name had been approved for ministership.”

“He claimed to have taken oath after informing the CM. But this only confirms what we have been accusing RCP Singh of,” the JD-U national president added.

“Our charge is that RCP Singh became a minister as per his own free will. He has dropped the name of Shah. Does Shah belong to our party? Can the BJP decide which JD-U leader will become a minister,” Lalan questioned.

Earlier on Sunday, Nitish Kumar skipped the NITI Aayog meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while RCP Singh announced his exit from the party after JD-U sought a reply on corruption allegations against him on Saturday. (ANI)

CWG 2022: India Ends Campaign With 61 Medals, 4th Slot In Tally

India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2022 officially came to an end, with 61 medals on the last day of the prestigious multi-sport event.

While the figure is five short of last edition’s tally of 66, the Indian contingent can certainly be pleased with the number, given that shooting was not a part of this edition at Birmingham.

India had a fruitful campaign at Birmingham 2022, winning 61 medals (22 golds, 16 silvers and 23 bronzes). Wrestling topped the medal chart with 12 medals including six golds while weightlifting accounted for 10 medals.

PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen bagged their first-ever CWG singles titles in badminton while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty too claimed their first CWG men’s doubles gold on the last day.

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s hockey team was unable to overturn the dominant Aussies and had to settle for a silver after suffering a 0-7 defeat.

Ace Indian paddler Sharath Kamal won his second singles gold, expanding his overall medal tally to 13 at the Games. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, meanwhile, clinched his first CWG singles medal, a bronze.

The men’s triple jump team created history with a 1-2 finish, as Eldhose Paul won gold and Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevid bagged a silver in the final of the men’s triple jump. Avinash Sable bagged the silver medal smashing the Kenyan monopoly on the podium in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Tulika Maan and Shushila Devi headlined the success in judo with their silver medals.

India won their first CWG medals in lawn bowls, gold for the women’s fours and the men’s fours team clinched a silver. Boxers Nitu Ghanghas, Amit Panghal and Nikhat Zareen won golds too in their respective categories.

India won the silver medal in the inaugural women’s T20 cricket competition as well as a bronze medal in women’s hockey.

Sanket Sargar was the first Indian to win a medal in Birmingham, clinching silver in the men’s 55kg weightlifting category. Mirabai Chanu was the first Indian to win a gold medal at CWG 2022 while Jeremy Lalrinnunga was the first Indian man to clinch gold and finish the podium on top at Birmingham.

Sudhir bagged the first medal for India, a gold, in para-sports at the Birmingham 2022. He became the champion in the para powerlifting men’s heavyweight category.

It was a spectacular campaign for India in wrestling as they won 12 medals in Birmingham 2022 campaign.

Bajrang Punia successfully defended his title and won his second successive gold medal in CWGs. While Deepak Punia bagged his maiden medal in CWG and he got it done with gold under his kitty. Sakshi Malik also returned to her best and claimed gold to add more to India’s tally.

It was a wrestling bonanza on Day 9 as India won six medals. Vinesh Phogat bagged gold at the Commonwealth Games. Ravi Dahiya and Naveen, meanwhile, clinched their first medal at the CWG, coloured gold. Pooja Sihag, Pooja Gehlot and Deepak Nehra — all won bronze. (ANI)

‘Why I Support The Call To #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha’

Shobhamoti Day, a resident of greater Noida West and a movie buff, explains why she is not going to watch Laal Singh Chaddha

There is a reason why #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha has been trending on social media of late. There is anger among movie-lovers against Aamir Khan and his public posturing, either through his movies or speeches on various TV programmes. Seemingly, Aamir has projected himself to be a forward-looking, secular being who is taking up social causes but the reality is far from it. And his time is up.

I will only raise two instances here to prove my point. First, if you remember his statement a few years back where he said the intolerance in India was growing and he was alarmed by several incidents. During that time there was a wave of similar statements by political leaders and Left intelligentsia.

Many people saw it as a smear campaign against the BJP which was the ruling party in power then. However, Aamir wanted to ride the ongoing wave and gain traction, which many film stars do to stay in news. So, he joined the so called ‘secular bandwagon’ which sought to project India as an Islamophobic nation. Very smartly, he attributed this view to his now estranged wife, a Hindu.

Now, when the tide has turned and his own movie is facing boycott calls, he has changed tack. Aamir is now saying he loves his country. This is hunting with the hounds and running with the hare.

ALSO READ: ‘Why Waste Time On A Remake, When Original Is Available’

The second point: In several of his movies, he has ridiculed Hindu beliefs and deities. Although he was not the director of these movies, everybody in filmdom knows Aamir has a big say in most movie sequences where is he acting. When he was confronted about his stand on Hindu sentiments, the superstar defended it by saying he was only trying to expose the fallacies of the religion.

I want to ask him if he has similar motives about other religions too. All religions have certain oppressive and obsolete practices. Take for example, some Islamic medieval practices like triple talaq, female genital mutilation, polygamy etc. I have never heard Mr Aamir Social Worker Khan to raise his voice against these practices, either in any of his movies or public speeches. Are all those moral platitudes restricted to the majority community only?

Of course, Aamir Khan is entitled to his opinion and choice. We too have the choice to watch or boycott his film. Simple. In a modern world, banning a book or movie is not the answer; if the readers and audience choose to reject them, the message is delivered. And it will set an example for others in the Hinduphobic club too. Freedom of expression and freedom of choice is not a one-way street.

During one of the episodes in ‘Satyamev Jayate’ Aamir Khan had said something like: “One glass of milk poured on a religious idol costs ₹20. If the same is offered to poor children, it will feed them with nutrition.” I completely agree with Mr Khan on this score. One movie ticket at a multiplex costs me ₹500. I will save that money to provide a few meals to the poor.

Taliban Forces, Pak Soldiers Exchange Gunfire Near Kunar

In yet another incident of a border clash at the disputed Durand line, Taliban-led forces and Pakistani soldiers exchanged gunfire in the Dangam district in Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

Afghanistan’s TOLO news reported that clashes took place on Sunday and continued until 10 pm. Both sides used light as well as heavy weapons.
Taliban official Najibullah Hanif said that the attempt by Pakistani soldiers to build military facilities on the side of the Durand Line is what sparked the clashes.,

After the clash, Pakistani forces fired mortar shells in the Dangam area. Hanif said that both sides are now trying to resolve the issue.

The ties between Taliban-led Afghanistan and Pakistan have been frosty of late and matters have been exacerbated by recent border tensions. Last month, a number of videos emerged from border standoff in Balochistan and Nimroz provinces of the two countries.

Earlier, the Taliban-appointed Defence Minister said that Afghanistan will not allow any other country to act aggressively against its interests.

The refusal to accept the status of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan by the Taliban regime has clearly shown the cracks in the relationship between the two countries.

During his visit to the Durand Line in Paktia province, Mawalwi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid said the Taliban wants good ties with all neighbouring countries and expects the same from them.

Regional analysts believe that Pakistan has committed a strategic blunder in thinking that the Taliban, which the country helped in fighting a US-backed Afghanistan for over two decades, will fulfil Islamabad’s wishes.

The Taliban have so far not shown any signs of acceding to these wishes. Rather, on several occasions, they have rejected Pakistan’s demands, including the one to recognise the Durand Line.

‘Borders’ that have remained porous for centuries have suddenly been shut down, dividing clans and families, according to Toronto-based think tank International Forum For Rights And Security (IFFRAS).

“The enormous harms that have been suffered by the Pashtun community have engendered a deep distrust of the Pakistani state in the minds of Pashtuns on either side of the Durand Line,” IFFRAS said. (ANI)

No plan to return to politics: Rajinikanth

Superstar Rajinikanth has finally denied all the rumours about him starting a political party and also spilled beans about his upcoming movie ‘Jailer’.

On Monday, the ‘Lingaa’ actor met with Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi after which he clarified all the rumours.
In an interaction with media outside his residence, No,” says Rajinikanth when asked if he plans to return to politics. He directly said “No.”

When the Megastar was asked if he and Governor RN Ravi discussed anything about politics or the upcoming Parliamentary elections. In response, Rajinikanth shared that talked a lot about politics, but cannot divulge anything to the media.

He added by giving the details about the media, “he loves the spirituality and beliefs in Tamil Nadu. He promised he will do everything in his power for the benefits of the people of TN.”

When also asked about his thoughts on GST on food products like milk and curd, he refused to comment on this matter.

Rajinikanth stated that the shooting for his upcoming movie might commence on the 15th or 22nd of this month.

Rajinikanth has teamed up with filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar for a new film titled ‘Jailer’.

The project will also star Kannada actor Shivrajkumar in a key role.

Few months ago, the makers of the film, Sun Pictures shared the title poster of Jailer.

The poster features a blood-stained sickle.

The film’s announcement has left fans excited. It seems like ‘Jailer’ will be an action thriller.

Rajinikanth was last seen in ‘Annaatthe’, directed by Siva, which was released to mixed reviews for Diwali in 2021. (ANI)

China Goes Ballistic Over Taiwan

The paranoid Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its authoritarian Chairman Xi Jinping reacted furiously to the historic Taiwan visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) shuffled naval and air assets, and angrily fired ballistic missiles and rockets into the sea to vent its wrath. Taiwan recalled its armed forces, putting them on alert soon after they had completed annual Han Kuang war games. Some are already calling this the “Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis”.
Notably, at least four ballistic missiles flew over or past northern Taiwan. The authorities did not sound air raid warnings, though the populace was expecting such an eventuality. One Taiwanese citizen told ANI that he was worried. “China has never been that aggressive before. After they taste blood, they sure would like to know what the meat tastes like,” he fretted.

He added, “There’s a bit of tension. Also, TV programs and the news are running the topic all day long.” Nonetheless, he said, “For average people, life is moving on.”

Taiwanese netizens remained defiant, and some went so far as to claim that any imagery revealed by China was fake. Most Chinese would never have heard of the American politician before, but the name “Pelosi” has now become a sensitive topic in China.

Such was the alarm that owners of the Pelosi Italian fashion outlet in China were covering up the shop name to prevent becoming a target of protestors. Those Chinese netizens calling for calm tended to be drowned out by the nationalistic fervor.

Indeed, the following comment can be viewed as a moderate voice: “China has been a wise country since ancient times, and attacking Taiwan without sending any troops is the correct choice … In short, Chinese should not question the decisions made by the government. Our aim was never war, but the reunification of the motherland. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is not the end, but the beginning.”

Another began calmly but then advocated unquestioning fealty to the CCP: “All Chinese people want to start a war, but nobody is talking about the consequences of fighting a war. Our government is not an incompetent one. It’s a government with a clean mind. We should trust them. If it tells the country to start a war, then fight; if not to fight, then defend.” One China Daily, one reader enthused, “We witnessed the return of Hong Kong, the return of Macau. We too will witness the reunification of Taiwan.”

Yet social media brings out the worst too. One photo circulating online showed a Chinese car that had sign-written on the back this offensive comment: “Recover Taiwan. Gang rape Tsai Ing-wen.” Other misogynist comments against Taiwanese women were common. This kind of nationalistic hubris is rampant in China, with Xi and the CCP firing up people with undiluted visions of Chinese supremacy.

Chinese officials were little better. What about the Chinese Ambassador to France, for instance? Lu Shaye discussed CCP plans for Taiwan after “reunification” (i.e. military conquest). Lu declared that re-education programs would be necessary for the “effectively indoctrinated and intoxicated” Taiwanese public. He added, “It must be re-educated to eliminate separatist thought and secessionist theory”.

The CCP is already busy formulating a Taiwanese version of “one country, two systems”, drawing lessons from Hong Kong’s subjugation. China’s military reaction to Pelosi’s overnight stay in Taiwan was robust yet calculated. The scale and extent of the joint exercise was greater than hitherto seen, and it was controlled by the Eastern Theater Command of the PLA. This is one of the military’s five commands, and the one responsible for the theater facing Taiwan.

The Chinese exercise kicked off on 4 August, with the Eastern Theater Command specifying seven exclusion zones surrounding Taiwan as restricted areas for ships, aircraft and missiles to execute live firing. These zones pretty much encircled the island nation, but at the same time they revealed the key areas where China might intimidate and blockade Taiwan again in the future. PLA actions, as outlined below, telegraphed China’s operational approach to isolating Taiwan.

The PLA exercise echoed an “invasion” scenario, and four distinct phases were discernible. In one sense, while this was worrisome to Taiwan, it could prove a treasure trove for the Taiwanese, Japanese and American militaries, since it exposed what PLA strategy and tactics might be in a real shooting war.

Indeed, the US military was out in force to suck up all manner of intelligence and to glean valuable insights into the PLA’s thinking and capacity. For instance, on 5 August the USA fielded at least one RC-135S, one RC-135V, three P-8As, one E-3G and one U-2S aircraft. These were supported by six KC-135 air-to-air tankers.

In phase one, the PLA crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, while in phase two the PLA moved to open waters east of Taiwan to “target” important military bases in Hualien and Taitung. Such eastern facilities, which include large underground aircraft bases, have been used as fallback positions for the Taiwanese military since the 1980s.

In addition, Chinese warships, aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles took up a posture to prevent US strike groups and assets from Japan or elsewhere from interfering in the PLA exercise. This is what experts call anti-access/area denial operations.

The PLA conducted these first two phases on the opening day of the exercise. China also fired an unknown number of PHL-16 long-range artillery rockets from Pingtan in Fujian, plus approximately 11 ballistic missiles (likely DF-15B and DF-16 short-range ballistic missiles) from brigades of the PLA Rocket Force’s 61 Base. The units involved were 613 Brigade at Shangrao, 616 Brigade at Ganzhou and 617 Brigade at Jinhua, and their missiles splashed down in the designated exclusion zones.

Moving on to phase three, the PLA intended to seal the entrance to Bashi Channel that separates Taiwan from the Philippines, and control maritime traffic in and out of the South China Sea.

The final phase saw the PLA “encircle” Taiwanese military bases in Kaohsiung, and it used naval vessels to create a blockade of Taiwan. Spotted, and monitored by Taiwanese navy and coast guard vessels not too far beyond the territorial waters of eastern Taiwan, were Chinese destroyers, frigates and corvettes. No aircraft carriers were involved.

In the air, the PLA Air Force and PLA Navy proved equally provocative. An average of 60+ aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line in large formations from day one of the exercise. Fighters were accompanied by airborne early warning and electronic warfare aircraft.

The PLAN might be the largest navy in the world, but this does not automatically equate to an innate ability to coordinate and sustain numerous vessels at sea. The coming days and weeks will thus enable an assessment of the sustainability of PLA operations, particularly naval ones.

As well as testing the “jointness” of the Eastern Theater Command, air-sea integration was another important facet, as were the inclusion of electronic warfare and space-based capabilities. Careful observation by the USA and allies may well have identified weaknesses or gaps that can be exploited in the future. There have been recent tense incidents between Chinese and foreign aircraft and vessels.

For example, Australia complained of an unsafe interception of a P-8A maritime patrol aircraft over the South China Sea in May. China has already established a baseline for unsafe practices, and this lowers the threshold for accidental incidents that could quickly escalate in such episodes as China’s latest antics against Taiwan.

Hu Xijin, the former editor of the Chinese tabloid Global Times, joyously tweeted, “The PLA has announced six exercise areas around Taiwan island, the closest being only 9 nautical miles from the island, and the waterways of Taiwan’s main ports will be blocked during the drills. This is what Pelosi’s visit has brought to Taiwan.”

China is belligerent enough to blockade Taiwan, but just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and someone attempted to do the same to China! Beijing would likely begin shooting. This merely shows how unacceptable China’s behavior has become. Its default position is to throw its weight around militarily, which is a very dangerous practice.

On the other hand, Taiwan exercised restraint, with its Ministry of National Defense (MND) commenting: “ROC Armed Forces are operating as usual and monitor our surroundings in response to irrational activities from PRC, aiming for changing the status quo & destabilizing the region’s security. We seek no escalation, but we don’t stand down when it comes to our security and sovereignty.”

In the lead-up to and during the exercise, China displayed nearly the full range of deterrence activities. These included: unveiling/highlighting advanced weapons (through video releases), enhancing combat readiness (as announced by the MND on 3 August), conducting military exercises (via the Eastern Theater Command), boosting the disposition of military units (units were relocated closer to Taiwan), information attacks (innumerable cyberattacks against Taiwan) and restrictive operations exclusion zones around Taiwan).

Rod Lee, an analyst with the US Air Force’s China Aerospace Studies Institute, commented: “In short, what we’re seeing is aggressive textbook deterrence activities, as the PLA discusses in the 2020 Science of Military Strategy. But we also haven’t seen the PLA exercise the full range of peacetime deterrence options (yet). Within the military realm, the PLA still has options to expand the scope of deterrence operations horizontally (beyond the Eastern Theater) or vertically (creating an atmosphere of war, demonstrative strikes or other activities they’ve already conducted but on a larger scale).”

Unfortunately, China is certainly not acting like the responsible global power it pretends to be. It suspended 2,066 types of imports from Taiwan, amounting to 64% of all products. Then Beijing said on 5 August that it would cancel military phone calls with the USA, as well as defense meetings and cooperation on anti-drug efforts. Furthermore, it would no longer take part in talks on maritime safety or climate change.

This only illustrates how China has never considered confidence- and security-building mechanisms as a proper means of crisis management. These boycotts show that such measures are simply expendable bargaining chips designed for it to up the ante.

In a time of crisis, when such mechanisms are needed more than ever before, China simply suspends them like a spoilt child. Even the Kuomintang political party in Taiwan has sharply criticized Beijing. It warned, “We strongly denounce the continued harassment of our air defense identification zone and the median line in the Taiwan Strait. The Beijing authority’s excessive military actions have significantly disrupted regional peace and stability as well as civil aviation and maritime traffic.”

China, through its bullying, is ironically promoting resistance and bipartisanship within Taiwan, with local elections less than four months away. China is being careful not to stumble into any accidental conflict. Xi does not want a war with Taiwan to distract from his re-enthronement for a third term, but he has sent a clear warning to Taiwan and the USA to dissuade any similar high-level Western political visits in the future.

Remember, too, that Xi cannot unilaterally change the status quo established with the USA in 1979, for that could push the USA into changing its One-China policy. It must be noted that China and the USA are both largely playing to domestic audiences, with neither leader wishing to appear weak. Yet how will the USA react to what China has just done? And how will a credible red line be reestablished, or is it indeed too late for that already?

In many respects, China has just set a precedent. It bodes ill if China, every time it senses a slight or insult, blockades and bullies democratic Taiwan. Pelosi’s visit presented Xi with a golden opportunity to stamp his authority on the CCP, on China, on Asia, and he has done so. (ANI)

Parl Panel Wants Illegitimate Child Reference Removed, Law On Guardianship

A Parliamentary Committee has raised strong objection to the term ‘illegitimate’ being used in the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act (HMGA) and suggested the government omit the word, “as no child is illegitimate, asserting that “the law should be the same for all children whether born within or out of wedlock”.

The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, headed by Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi, made its observations in the One Hundred Eighteenth Report on ‘Review of Guardianship and Adoption Laws’. The report was submitted on Monday in both Houses of Parliament.
The Committee notes that “Section 3(1) of the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act makes use of the term ‘illegitimate’ in reference to a child born out of wedlock”.

“The Committee strongly feels that the word ‘Illegitimate’ should be omitted as no child is illegitimate and the law should be the same for all children whether born within or out of wedlock,” the report reads.

The Committee is of the considered view that Section 6 of the HMGA lays down that in the case of a Hindu minor boy and a Hindu minor unmarried girl, the father is the natural guardian and ‘after’ him the mother, it mentioned.

“Section 7 of the same Act provides that the natural guardianship of an adopted son who is a minor, passes, on adoption, to the adopted father and ‘after’ him to the adoptive mother. The said Act does not provide for joint guardianship nor does it recognize the mother as the guardian of the minor legitimate child unless the father is deceased or is found unfit. Since the Act gives preference to father over mother, it goes against the Right to Equality and Right against discrimination envisaged under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution.”

Further, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) envisages that state parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in all matters relating to marriage and family relations, the report observed, and said “the Committee feels that there is an urgent need to amend HMGA and accord equal treatment to both mother and father as natural guardians”.

The Committee is of the view that under the Guardians and Wards Act, parental authority supersedes the welfare principle, while under the HMGA, the welfare principle is of paramount consideration in determining guardianship. Thus, for deciding questions of guardianship for Hindu children, their welfare is of paramount consideration which will override parental authority.

But for non-Hindu children, the Court’s authority to intervene in furtherance of the welfare principle is subordinated to that of the father, as the natural guardian. However, what constitutes the ‘Welfare’ of the child is undefined. The Committee feels that there is a need to amend the Guardians and Wards Act to give primacy to the ‘welfare principle’ over parental authority.

The Committee is of the view that there is a need to define what constitutes the ‘Welfare’ of the child in broader terms in both the Acts.

“The Committee is of the view that the recommendation made by the Law Commission be taken into consideration that provisions relating to Custody, child support, and visitation arrangements should be incorporated in the Guardians and Wards Act. Parents should be granted equal rights with respect to guardianship and custody,” the official data read.

“The Act should empower the Courts to award joint custody to both the parents in circumstances conducive to the welfare of the child, or award sole custody to one parent with visitation rights to the other. The Act must also empower the Courts to fix an amount specifically for child support to meet basic expenses of the child,” said the report.

The Committee feels that there is a need to enact a single comprehensive law covering guardianship aspects of various categories of persons and applicable to all irrespective of religion, says the report, adding “the Committee is of the view that the Act must facilitate guardianship of elderly persons as there may be circumstances where a senior citizen may reach a stage where the health concerns become overwhelming and they may need a guardian to take care of their health and well being, for instance, an elderly person diagnosed with dementia or lying in a vegetative state or an aged parent abandoned by his children”.

“The Committee also recommends that timelines may be stipulated in the Act for Courts within which the application for Guardianship of the person or/and property of the minor or application for the removal of a guardian is to be disposed of by the Court to ensure speedy disposal of cases,” the official data read.

The Committee is of the considered opinion that if the proposed Law on Guardianship is to cover majors, then it should also provide for what is now known as ‘Supported Decision making’, a system gaining popularity in many countries around the world, it said.

Noting that it is an alternative to guardianship, the report said, “A person using supported decision-making appoints trusted advisors, such as friends, family, or professionals, to serve as supporters. Instead of having a guardian make choices for them, the person takes the help of supporters who help them make their own choices.” (ANI)

The Indian duo warded off the English challenge by 21-15, 21-13.
Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty started off the first game well. The duo dominated over the English duo of Sean Vendy and Ben Lane. The India duo prevailed in the first game by 21-15.

The next game between the duo started on an even note. The things were even at 6-6. The Indians duo continued to build their lead from that point on. They eventually won the second game by 21-13 and sealed the match and gold medal for their country.
