DGCA Extends 50% Cap On SpiceJet’s Flights Till October

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday extended the 50 percent restriction on SpiceJet flights till October 29.

“Based on the review of the safety performance of Spicejet, the authority issued Interim Order of even number dated 27 July 2022 whereby restricting the number of departures of Spicejet to 50% of the number of departures approved under Summer Schedule 2022 for a period of eight weeks,” DGCA said in its order.
Whereas the review has indicated that there is an appreciable reduction in the number of safety incidents, it said.

“However, as a matter of abundant caution, the competent authority has decided that the restriction as imposed on July 27 this year shall continue to be in force till the end of the summer schedule on September 29, in accordance with the powers conferred under rule 19A of the Aircraft Rules, 1937,” it further read.

DGCA said that any increase in the number of departures beyond 50% as approved during this period, shall be subject to the airline demonstrating to the satisfaction of DGCA that it has sufficient technical support and financial resource to safely and efficiently undertake such enhanced capacity. During this period, the airline shall be subject to “Enhanced surveillance” by DGCA, it reads.

Earlier on July 27, reviewing the reply of Spicejet on show cause notice, the DGCA had restricted the airline to operating only 50% of flights for eight weeks.

In a letter to Spicejet, the Joint Director General of Civil Aviation mentioned that the reported incidents on aircraft operated by Spicejet from 1st April to 5th July 2022 were reviewed and it was observed that on a number of occasions, the aircraft either turned back to its originating station or continued landing to the destination with degraded safety margins. There is poor internal safety oversight and inadequate maintenance actions, which have resulted in the degradation of the safety margins.

Reacting to DGCA restriction, SpiceJet had stated, “We are in receipt of the DGCA order and will act as per directions of the regulator. Due to the current lean travel season, SpiceJet like other airlines had already rescheduled its flight operations. Hence, there will be absolutely no impact on our flight operations.”

The airline had further added, “We want to reassure our passengers and travel partners that our flights will operate as per schedule in the coming days and weeks. There will be no flight cancellation as a consequence of this order. DGCA’s observation that SpiceJet is taking measures for arresting the trend of incidents is very encouraging and we will continue to work under the close guidance of the regulator.”

A financial assessment carried out by DGCA in September 2021 had revealed that Spicejet was operating on cash and approved vendors were not being paid on regular basis leading to the shortage of spares and frequent invoking of Minimum Equipment Lists (MELS).

Whereas from the above, it was deduced that Spicejet failed to establish a safe, efficient and reliable air transport service under the terms of rule 134 read with Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules, 1937 and accordingly, a show cause notice was issued on July 5, 2022, to the Accountable Manager of M/s Spicejet Ltd. to explain within three weeks of receipt of the notice as to why action should not be taken against the airline.

“On July 25, Spicejet submitted a reply to the show cause notice. The same has been reviewed at an appropriate level and it has been observed that Spicejet is taking measures for arresting the trend of incidents, however, the airline needs to sustain these efforts for safe and reliable air transport service,” the letter had read. Chemical Mixture In Skin Attracts Mosquitoes That Spread Illness

A fragrance from human skin directs mosquitoes that transmit Zika, dengue, and yellow fever toward their victims. Up until this point, the precise makeup of that smell was unknown.

The aroma that prompts a mosquito to identify and land on its victim is produced by the mixture of carbon dioxide and the compounds 2-ketoglutaric and lactic acids, according to research led by UC Riverside. This chemical concoction also promotes probing, which is the practice of piercing mouthpieces to look for blood.
This chemical concoction appears to draw female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, carriers of the Zika, chikungunya, dengue, and yellow fever viruses, in particular. This mosquito was first discovered in Africa, but it has since spread to many tropical and subtropical countries, including the United States.

In the journal Scientific Reports, the team’s new research finding and how it was made are described in detail. “Although others have discovered substances that attract mosquitoes, many of them don’t have a noticeable, immediate impact. This one does, according to entomologist Ring Carde of UCR.

Mosquitoes employ a number of indicators, such as carbon dioxide, sight, temperature, and humidity, to find their prey. Recent studies by Carde, however, indicate that skin scents are much more crucial for identifying a bite location.

We showed that mosquitoes land on visually unclear targets that are infused with these two scents, and these targets are not connected to heat or wetness, according to Carde. Skin odour is now the main determining factor.

Given the importance of smell in mosquitoes’ ability to successfully feed on humans, Carde set out to identify the precise compounds that give humans’ fragrance such power to the insects. Lactic acid, a component of the equation, was recognised as one of the chemical components of the odour cocktail as early as 1968.

Since then, numerous studies have found that human-produced compounds, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide, also draw these insects. Carde, who has spent 26 years studying mosquitoes, concluded that these additional compounds were not potent attractants.

Carde stated, “I had a sneaking suspicion there was some unexplored aspect to the chemistry of smells tempting the yellow fever mosquito. I sought to identify the precise combination.

The 2-ketoglutaric acid could not have been identified using the methods that chemists generally employ, according to Carde. Gas chromatography would not have detected this acid, which separates substances based on their polarity and molecular weight.

Because of the intricacy of the human odour profile and the minute levels of these compounds present in sweat, said scientist Jan Bello, previously of UCR and currently with insect pest control business Provivi, “I suspect that these molecules may not have been detected earlier.”

Carde turned to Bello, who was drawing substances from the sweat on his own foot to use as a mosquito attractant. He put glass beads in his socks and wore them for four hours while walking about to gather odours.

Bello remarked that wearing the beads was similar to “squeezing stress balls full of sand, but with your feet.” They would eventually become unpleasant after doing that for a while because they would get trapped in between your toes, which is the most aggravating aspect.

The expense was worthwhile despite the hassle. Bello purified compounds from the perspiration left on the sock beads and tracked how the chemicals affected the behaviour of mosquitoes. The combo that was the most active was thus revealed.

Future research is intended to ascertain whether the same substance works against other mosquito species and why different people are prone to be bitten differently. Some are more alluring to these mosquitoes than others, but no one has yet determined why, according to Carde.

The research team is optimistic that their discovery can be used to attract, capture, and possibly kill disease-carrying mosquitoes, even though it may not provide information for the creation of new repellents.

In the end, we’re really happy that we discovered these chemicals because we weren’t always confident that we would. Thoughts don’t always pan out, but we had a suspicion they existed, Carde added. (ANI)

India Shines At Samarkand SCO Summit

The 22^nd summit of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) took place in Uzbekistan’s capital Samarkand, last week. The summit was held amid the growing geo-political turmoil set-off by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and China’s aggressive military posturing in the Taiwan Straits.

China which initiated this regional grouping as Shanghai Five in 1996, has transformed the forum into an influential grouping of 8 nations, with many more like Iran to join as a permanent member and diverse countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkiye, Belarus and Mongolia being given Observer status, which shows its transformation into an influential regional forum, besides challenging to other western regional alliances.

In his address at the summit, PM Modi obdurately touched every relevant aspect of the current geo-political situation. He urged SCO to strive to develop reliable, resilient and diversified supply chains in the region. For this, better connectivity will be required, besides giving full rights of transit to each other, he asserted, in a veiled reference to Pakistan. He also batted for making India a regional manufacturing hub. On tackling the challenges of food security, he spoke of India’s efforts to popularise millets as an alternative and cheap option.

In a speech that was otherwise free from references to India’s regional issues on terrorism with Pakistan and on territorial sovereignty with China, Mr. Modi called for greater cooperation in the Eurasian region. He also focused on initiatives on manufacturing that India is willing to pilot in the next year, when India assumes the chair of the SCO and hosts the Summit in mid-2023.

Modi-Xi Jinping meeting

The most important meeting from India’s standpoint was a possible meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Jinping. Everyone wondered whether roadblocks have been cleared and temperaments cooled after the recent success of commander level talks between two countries on the issues of Chinese aggression in Indian Ladakh region in May 2020.

But, officially the MEA mentioned no such meetings. In fact, Samarkand offered the perfect opportunity for two leaders to reset the ties. But there seemed little willingness from the two sides, to compromise. In fact, if the reports are to be believed, the exchange between the two leaders, reminded one of the cold treatment meted out by Mr Modi to former Pakistan’s prime minister, Nawaz Sharif at the 2014 SAARC summit, though it eventually ended with a handshake at the last moment, but nothing such happened in Samarkand. But the moot question here is whether China is in a mood to mend ties with India?

Well, it seems no, not at the moment perhaps. Modi and Xi have met twice earlier but that is not enough to read each other’s thoughts and also make a convincing and principled case, though both the countries stand to gain much economically, if ties are improved.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, when asked about a meeting that never happened said that he did not “think there is anything more to read into that”.

Modi-Putin meeting

PM Modi’s bilateral meeting with Russian President Putin at the summit also received a lot of attention. The two leaders shared the customary diplomatic greetings, with Modi specifically emphasising that the modern era was not a time of war. According to reports, Putin acknowledged India’s position on the Ukrainian conflict and reaffirmed his commitment to a speedy resolution.

India and Chinese leaders expressing their concerns directly with the Russian leader about the war in Ukraine is reflective of global concerns about the effects of its aggression, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last Friday.

The mainstream American media on Friday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that this is “not the time for war” in Ukraine. It was the lead story on the webpages of both The Washington Post and The New York Times, and was widely carried by the mainstream American media.

Modi-Erdogan bonhomie

Among other impromptu meetings was the one important one between PM Modi and Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which was held unannounced on Friday. After the meeting, Modi underlined that the focus was on economic ties between the two countries.

The MEA, in a statement, described the meeting as a review of current India-Turkiye relations. While noting the increase in recent years in economic relations, particularly bilateral trade, it acknowledged the potential for further enhancement of economic and commercial partnerships. Erdogan last visited India in 2017.

While India-Turkiye’s economic and commercial cooperation constitutes an important dimension of the bilateral relationship, diplomatic ties have been adversely impacted over Turkiye’s public criticism of the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the February 2020 riots in north-east Delhi.

Modi-Raisi meeting, looking ahead

Another important meeting at Samarkand was between PM Modi and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. Both the leaders took the opportunity to discuss boosting ties in areas like energy, commerce and connectivity. They also reviewed progress of the Shahid Behesti terminal at Chabahar Port and there are indications that the Iranian president also discussed a new mechanism to supply crude oil to India on rupee payment basis, instead of American dollars. This may bring the two countries closer on the trade and economic fronts.

The manner in which Mr Modi and his diplomatic team carried the business at Samarkand shows the maturity and coming of age of the Indian diplomacy under PM Modi. India will be hosting the next SCO Summit in 2023, and this will offer Mr Modi an opportunity to develop the organisation into a more meaningful and cohesive organisation. A fact evident by the number of countries, which are desirous of joining it, due to its regional potential.

Protests Outside Hindu Temple in UK’s Smethwick

A mob staged a violent demonstration outside the Durga Bhawan temple in United Kingdom’s Smethwick on Tuesday triggering fears of clashes that erupted in the country’s eastern city of Leicester over the past weeks following an India-Pakistan cricket match.

Videos that surfaced on social media showed a large crowd of people marching towards the Durga Bhawan Hindu Centre on Spon Lane. They were also heard raising religious slogans.

Several from the mob were seen climbing the temple’s walls.

Sandwell Police had earlier tweeted, “We’re aware of a planned protest in West Bromwich later today (20 September). We understand this is in relation to concerns around a speaker at the Temple in Spon Lane, but we’re informed the event has been canceled and this person is not staying in the UK. “

This incident comes after recent social media reports about Pakistani organized gangs were seen vandalizing and terrorizing Hindus in the UK’s Leicester City. The incident follows a spate of violence and disorder in the eastern part of the city.

The Indian High Commission in London on Monday condemned the violence perpetrated against the Indian community in Leicester and sought immediate action against those involved in the attacks.

“We strongly condemn the violence perpetrated against the Indian community in Leicester and the vandalization of premises and symbols of Hindu religion.” We have strongly taken up this matter with the UK authorities and have sought immediate action against those involved in these attacks. We call on the authorities to provide protection to the affected people,” the statement read.

The cycle of violence was triggered on August 28 after India won the Asia Cup T20 match against Pakistan. On Sunday, a clash broke out among groups of young men in Leicestershire, according to the police statement. A total of 47 arrests have been made so far, Leicestershire Police said. (ANI)

Protests Erupt After Student Commits Suicide At Private Univ: Punjab

A first-year student studying at a private university in Punjab’s Jalandhar has died by suicide, said the Punjab Police on Wednesday.

The incident took place on September 20 in the evening.
The police have recovered a suicide note from the spot which cited “personal reasons” for the act.

“We received info at around 5:30 pm on September 20 that a first-year student of B. Design at Lovely Professional University died by suicide. We reached the spot and recovered a suicide note which cited personal reasons,” said the Kapurthala Police.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.

The students gathered in large numbers last night inside the university campus to protest over the suicide of the first-year student.

The university issued a statement on the incident which said that it is extending full support to the authorities for further investigation.

“LPU fraternity is saddened by the unfortunate incident. The initial investigation by the Police, and the contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased. The University is providing full support to the authorities for further investigation,” the statement said.

“The University mourns the loss of the student and expresses its condolences to the bereaved family,” it added. (ANI)

Modi Was Right, Time Is Not For War: Macron At UN

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was right when he said that the time is not for war, France President Emmanuel Macron said at the ongoing 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

“Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India was right when he said the time is not for war. It is not for revenge against the West, or for opposing the West against the east. It is the time for a collective time for our sovereign equal states. To cope together with challenges we face,” he said.
This statement came in reference to PM Modi and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin’s conversation where the former said, “Today’s era is not of war and I have spoken to you about it on the call. Today we will get the opportunity to talk about how we can progress on the path of peace. India and Russia have stayed together with each other for several decades.”

Prime Minister spoke this during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s summit in Uzbekistan’s Samarkand.

“We spoke several times on the phone about India-Russia bilateral relations and various issues. We should find ways to address the problems of food, fuel security and fertilizers. I want to thank Russia and Ukraine for helping us to evacuate our students from Ukraine,” PM Modi added.

Responding to PM Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he knows about India’s position on the Ukraine conflict and “we want all of this to end as soon as possible”.

“I know about your position on the Ukraine conflict. I know about your concerns. We want all of this to end as soon as possible,” Putin said.

“But the other party, the leadership of Ukraine has claimed… that they refuse to engage in the negotiation process. They said they want to achieve their objectives, as they say, on the battlefield militarily. We will keep you abreast of everything that is happening over there,” he added.

“The rare reproach showed the 69-year-old Russian strongman coming under extraordinary pressure from all sides,” the Post said.

Putin said that relations between Russia and India are in the nature of a privileged strategic partnership and continue to develop very rapidly.

“We are actively engaging at international platforms. We are in discussion on international issues. Sometimes these issues are something that is not very good news…,” he said. (ANI)

Putin Announces Partial Military Mobilization In Russia

Asserting that the purpose of the West is to weaken, divide, and ultimately destroy Russia, President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday announced that he had signed a decree on partial military mobilization in Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“In order to protect our homeland, its sovereignty, and territorial integrity, to ensure the security of our people and people in the liberated territories, I consider it necessary to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff to conduct partial mobilization in the Russian Federation,” he said during a national address today, CNN reported.
He further said that efforts to begin partial mobilization will begin today.

“I repeat, we are talking only about partial mobilization. That is, only those citizens who are in the reserve and, above all, those who served in the armed forces, have certain military specialties and relevant experience, will be subject to conscription,” Putin said, as per CNN.

After the Kyiv regime actually publicly refused a peaceful solution to the Donbas problem today and, moreover, announced its claim to nuclear weapons, it became absolutely clear that a new next large-scale offensive in the Donbas, as it had already happened twice before, was inevitable,” he added.

At the beginning of his speech to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Western countries are seeking to destroy Russia.

“The purpose of this West is to weaken, divide and ultimately destroy our country. They are already directly saying that in 1991 they were able to split the Soviet Union, and now the time has come for Russia to break up into a multitude of regions and areas which are fatally hostile to each other,” the Russian president said as quoted by CNN.

Referendums on joining Russia will be held in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in eastern Ukraine on September 23-27.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Russian plans to stage referendums in occupied regions in eastern and southern Ukraine as a “noise” and thanked Ukraine’s allies for condemning the votes scheduled to start Friday.

On Tuesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the expected referendums during a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and reiterated the US would not recognize any attempt by Russia to “claim annexation of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.”

The US, along with the G7 nations and European Union (EU), has imposed severe and immediate economic costs on Russia for its “atrocities in Ukraine, including in Bucha”. (ANI)

Raju Leaves Behind Legacy Of Jokes, Joy And Laughter

Comedian-actor Raju Srivastava breathed his last breath at the age of 58, on Wednesday at AIIMS Delhi, after being admitted there following a heart attack on August 10.

Raju, who received widespread recognition after participating in the first season of the stand-up comedy show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2005, was part of the Indian entertainment industry since the late 1980s.
Born Satya Prakash Srivastava on December 25, 1963, to a middle-class family in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, his father, Ramesh Chandra Srivastava was a poet known as Balai Kaka. Since his childhood, Raju was fond of doing mimicry, which is why he wanted to be a comedian.

After completing his early studies in Kanpur, Raju shifted to Mumbai with the dream of becoming a comedian. He started his career by doing small roles in Bollywood films.

The first part he played was in the 1998 film ‘Tezaab’, which was followed by the 1989 Salman Khan starrer ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Baazigar’ in 1993. Apart from these, he also worked in ‘Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa’, ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon’, ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Bombay to Goa’ among several other films.

On July 1, 1993, Raju married Shikha from Lucknow and the duo had two children, Antara and Ayushman.

Raju then decided to venture into stand-up comedy after he took part as a contestant in Star One’s show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ in 2005, where his comedy got a new identity. He bagged the first runner-up place in the show.

During his stint on the show and even after that Raju, who was known most for his acute scrutiny and comical timing about various Indian aspects of life, became very popular for his stage character ‘Gajodhar Bhaiya’.

Subsequently, he also took part in the show’s spin-off, ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge – Champions’, where he won the title of ‘The King of Comedy’.

After gaining popularity as a comedian, he worked in TV shows like ‘Bigg Boss’, ‘Comedy Circus’, ‘Raju Hazir Ho’, ‘Comedy Ka Maha Muqabala’ and ‘Laugh India Laugh’. In 2009, he participated in Colors TV’s dance reality show ‘Nach Baliye’ as a dance couple with his wife Shikha. Raju also appeared on ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’.

After conquering the world of comedy and making a permanent place in his audience’s heart, he also expanded his reigns in politics. For the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the Samajwadi Party fielded him from Kanpur.

However, Raju returned the ticket on March 11, 2014, stating he was not getting enough support from the party’s local units. Following this, on March 19, 2014, he joined the Bhartiya Janta Party, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated him to be part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Since then, through his events in different cities, Raju promoted cleanliness and made various music videos for the cause. He also shot various TV commercials and social service message videos for ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.

The comedian was admitted to the hospital on August 10 after a heart attack. He was experiencing chest pain and collapsed while working out at the gym. Post this, his trainer took him to the hospital.

Reportedly, the 58-year-old was running on the treadmill when he complained about chest pain. He underwent an angioplasty the same day. After staying on the ventilator for several weeks, he finally passed away on September 21.

In a world where people struggle with sorrows and disappointments on a daily basis, Raju Srivastava’s comedy brought that much-needed spark of laughter to the common Indian. Though the ace comedian will never crack a joke again, his legacy of jokes, laughter and joy will continue to live for generations to come. (ANI)

Ebola Outbreak Reported In Uganda

World Health Organisation on Tuesday said that it is in close contact with the Ministry of Health Uganda to provide a rapid response after it confirmed the outbreak of case Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Central Region of the country.

“WHO is in close touch with the Ministry of Health Uganda and is providing support to mount a rapid response and engage communities,” the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted.
Earlier, in the day, the Health Ministry of Uganda said in a series of tweets that a confirmed case of Ebola virus was reported in the Mubende District in the Central Region of Uganda. The patients diagnosed with the symptoms later succumbed, the health ministry said.

“Uganda confirms an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Mubende District, Uganda. The confirmed case is a 24-year-old male a resident Ngabano village of Madudu Sub County in Mubende District presented with EVD symptoms and later succumbed,” the Uganda Health ministry tweeted.

It further said that the patient was found positive for the virus after the test samples were taken. A rapid response team was immediately sent to the Mubende district for case management.

“The clinical team took off samples for testing at UVRI. Results confirmed that the patient was positive for the Ebola-Sudan strain.”

“The Uganda Health Ministry and partners have dispatched a Rapid Response Team to Mubende District to support the teams in surveillance, contact tracing, and case management,” the tweet read.

Ebola is a severe and too often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. Previous Ebola outbreaks and responses have shown that early diagnosis and treatment with optimized supportive care –with fluid and electrolyte repletion and treatment of symptoms–significantly improve survival. (ANI)

On Tuesday, Sonam took to Instagram and explained why they chose the particular name for her son.
“In the spirit of the force that has breathed new meaning into our lives…In the spirit of Hanuman and Bheem who embody immense courage and strength…In the spirit of all that is sacred, life-giving and eternally ours, we seek blessings for our son, Vayu Kapoor Ahuja,” she wrote.

She added, “In Hindu scriptures Vayu is one of the paanch tatvas. He is the deity of breath, the spiritual father of Hanuman, Bheem and Madhav and He is the incredibly powerful lord of wind. Praana is Vayu, a guiding force of life and intelligence in the universe. All the deity’s of Praana, Indra, Shiva and Kali relate to Vayu.

He can breathe life into beings as easily as he can destroy evil. Vayu is said to be heroic, brave and mesmerisingly beautiful.”

Vayu was born on August 20, 2022.

Announcing the birth of the little one, Sonam had shared a note that read, “On 20.08.2022, we welcomed our beautiful baby boy Vayu with bowed heads and hearts.” Thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, friends and family who have supported us on this journey.
